• Set up grub2 on cloned Ubuntu installation

  With an Ubuntu Live Disc, I have copied my Ubuntu 10.04 installation to a new harddisk (with the same hardware). However, it doesn't boot, since I think I still need to set up grub for this new installation. How do I set up grub2 for a copied Ubuntu installation? All the tutorials for grub2 didn't really help me... running update-grub on the "original" Ubuntu installation doesn't find the copied Ubuntu installation.

• Why does Microsoft Excel change the characters that I copy into it?

  I live in Spain and I am using the English version of Microsoft Excel installed with wine on Ubuntu. The problem is that I use my laptop at work and when I copy text into excel (text that is Spanish) the characters that are Spanish (such as é,ñ, á...etc) are changed into weird characters. How can I sort this out? For example: Martínez José....appears as "Martínez José" in my spreadsheet and I really cant have it this way or my boss will kill me. :)

  I am trying to build a thin client remix using debootstrap. I have been successful but am wondering about one thing. When I install linux-generic as per linuxlivecdcustomizationfromscratch It asks me where I want to install grub. I know the package grub is needed if you install Ubuntu off the live cd, but why is it trying to configure grub using the drives on my host system in the chroot? Thanks

• Image CDN with API?

  My company uses flickr and picasa web albums as poor man's content delivery networks (CDN) for image hosting, but I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on any other services that might be worth looking into, paid and free? Preferably something that has an API so that it can be integrated discreetly on the backend as a WordPress plugin or for other development frameworks. A CDN such as Amazon is cheap, and it works, but the lack of a photo-centric API is what prevents me from using it for general usage.

  Session 11 is on as I write this – Ami Levin presenting about Primary Keys. It’s a good session. But actually, they’ve all been excellent so far, not just Ami’s. I’ve heard only good things about the content. So if you’re reading this and 24HOP is still on, then tune in and take part. If it’s finished, get yourself over to http://sqlpass.org/24hours and see if the sessions have been made available on-demand. Yes – you should be able to watch the sessions when you want to for a year. Watching live is best, because you can ask questions and have them answered during the session, but if there are ones you just couldn’t make, then watching them on-demand is a good option. Numbers have been “not bad”. At the moment it’s still the middle of the night for most Americans – about 6:30am in New York, and yet we’ve had well over a hundred at all the sessions so far, getting up to well over 300 for some sessions. And when I look through the list of names, I see a bunch of names that suggest we’re reaching people from all around the world. I’m seriously looking forward to seeing the stats about which countries have been represented in the audiences. There have been a few comments about the platform. Everyone seems to consider IBTalk an improvement on LiveMeeting, but the closed captioning has met a mixed reception. Some people are loving it, whereas other people are finding the translations leave quite a bit of space for improvement. I don’t know how many of the sessions I’ll get to watch overnight – but I’m looking forward to seeing how things go as the day progresses. You can download them to your local machine or eBook reader and read them. This is a great start as many important subjects are now covered and converted into an eBook. I personally read through a few of the books and found they are very comprehensive and and detailed. The goal is not to cover complete technology in a single book but rather pick a single topic and discuss it in detail. The source of the book is white paper, Technet wiki as well book online and it is clearly listed right bellow the book title. • 12.0.4.1 Reboot before install

  I'm trying to install 12.04.1 and after I choose install or live, it just goes to a blinking cursor or some text, then reboots the machine. I've tried nomodeset, alternate install, dvd install, and usb. Same problem with all of them. I've also tried unplugging unnecessary devices such as my webcam and 2nd monitor. • Purple/Pink lines on screen after login on Ubuntu Desktop 13.04

  I downloaded Ubuntu 13.04 and I loaded up the live system. It loaded up fine but when I clicked on the Ubuntu logo purple and pink lines appeared on screen and they didn't go away so I thought that if I installed the OS it would be fine so I installed the OS, logged in and lo and behold the purple and pink lines where back. My video card is nVidia N force (I think) Anyone having the same problem???

  I mean real bare bones, bare machine here(no Linux kernel, pre-existing kernel, or any bootloader). I mean honestly write the bootloading software in direct microarchitecture-specific machine opcode, host the operating system, interrupts, I/O, services, and graphical software and all hardware interaction, computation, and design entirely in binary. I know this is quite the leap here, but I was thinking to practice first in x86 assembly (not binary) 16-bit style. Any ideas?

• 2 windows loaders after grub2 repair

  I have recently reinstalled w7 and had ubuntu 12.04 lts installed on it,w7 installation deleted the grub2 loader,after that i found solution to use boot-repair from live-cd session, BUT......now i have 2 windows 7(loader)in grub loader,and only 1 windows 7 installation,how can i remove it?One is on on /dev/sda1(which should be w7 sistem reserved partition) and second is on on /dev/sda2(which is w7 installment partition) it says and both log on same w7.All i need is to remove it without brake the grub2 again and if someone is willing to guide me to add windows on primary selection, cause my girlfriends doesnt get along with linux :D.
