  • Problem with Nvidia after update

    After adding the most recent set of updates, I can't get into Ubuntu at all. I get a screen saying that I am running in low-graphics mode, 'your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly etc'. I can hit return and then get to the next screen saying 'what would you like to do?' however, i can't choose from the 4 options, the only keystroke that will register is escape, which takes me to a black screen with a login. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7050/nForce 610i and it has caused problems in the past, but I have always got round it by choosing to boot in recovery mode. Now, no matter which version I try to boot into I can't get into Ubuntu at all.

  • Chrome and Firefox not able to find some sites after Ubuntu's recent update?

    Loading of revision3.com in Chrome stops and status saying "waiting for static.inplay.tubemogul.com" grooveshark.com in Chrome never loads But wikipedia.org, google.com works just normal same behavior in Firefox too. I use wired DSL connection in Ubuntu 12.04. I guess this started happening after I upgraded the Chrome browser or Flash plugin few days ago from Ubuntu updates through update-manager. Thanks EDIT: Everything works normal in my WinXP. Problem is only in Ubuntu 12.04.     Hello. I have a batch of MP3 based books. Some of them divide into files according to book's own structure: chapters and so on. Some of them was just divided into equally lengthened parts. So. I've bought an iPhone, and I want to convert them all to M4B format. How could I convert them in a batch? I mean how cold I set up a process once, for each book, and then, after couple of weeks, receive totally converted library. The only able program for such conversion I've found was Audiobook Builder for a Mac. But it is pretty slow and do not support batching in principle. Solutions for any platform, please.

Edit: The thinking is that I have one mac update itself using Software Update, and then somehow share the downloaded updates with other macs.     Hi All, Im trying to set up a batch file to automatically deploy a php app to a web server, and basically what i want is an entirely automated process where i would just give it a revision number from the repository and it would then export the files, upload via ftp and then update deployment info at the repo host (codebase). However, im starting from scratch here, and im wanting to know, how would i set up a batch file to accept a variable when it was run, for example typing myfile.bat /revision 42 would enable me to deploy revision 42 to my server. if anyone can point me in the right direction id be very appreciated.

So here's my question: Does the Windows (from XP at least) have a command line for its embedded zip tool? Otherwise, shall I stick to another third-party util?

  • Task Scheduler : Logon as Batch Job Rights

    I'm trying to set up a scheduled task which will work under the Network Administrators account, whether the account is logged in or not (on a specificed computer) According to the Task Scheduler, I need 'Logon as batch job rights'. Attempting to change this setting in the Local Security Policy window has it the option to add the Administrator account to the groups greyed out. Currently, only LOCAL_SERVICE may Logon as Batch job. Attempting to add administrator to this group hasn't worked. How do I make it able to set this permission so that I can run tasks if I'm logged in or not?

  • Automated method to convert .reg registry file to reg.exe commands

    Occasionally I need to put registry entries into batch files to use in login scripts, unattended installers, etc. While it's pretty easy to add one or two registry commands to a batch file using reg.exe, when there is a large amount of registry data, it becomes tedious. I usually just end up merging an external reg file in those cases, which I would like to avoid, since it ruins the self-contained nature of the batch file. Does anybody know of any tools which can automatically convert a .reg file to a series of REG ADD and REG DELETE commands? This would make life a lot easier! Thanks.

    I have a batch of MP3 based books. Some of them divide into files according to book's own structure: chapters and so on. Some of them was just divided into equally lengthened parts. So. I've bought an iPhone, and I want to convert them all to M4B format. How could I convert them in a batch? I mean how cold I set up a process once, for each book, and then, after couple of weeks, receive totally converted library. The only able program for such conversion I've found was Audiobook Builder for a Mac. But it is pretty slow and do not support batching in principle. Solutions for any platform, please.

  • How to disable the annoying pop-up window after automatic updates are installed

    I'm running Windows XP SP3. After automatic updates are installed, there shows up an annoying pop-up window every 10 minutes that tells me whether I want to restart the machine now or later. This interrupts my work as it pops up in the middle of an important process. I don't want to disable automatic updates. I just want to disable this annoying pop-up window and restart the machine without having to see this warning. Thanks.

    I need to write a batch file to unzip files to their current folder from a given root folder. Folder 0 |----- Folder 1 | |----- File1.zip | |----- File2.zip | |----- File3.zip | |----- Folder 2 | |----- File4.zip | |----- Folder 3 |----- File5.zip |----- FileN.zip So, I wish that my batch file is launched like so: ocd.bat /d="Folder 0" Then, make it iterate from within the batch file through all of the subfolders to unzip the files exactly where the .zip files are located. So here's my question: Does the Windows (from XP at least) have a command line for its embedded zip tool? Otherwise, shall I stick to another third-party util?

  • Building a WSUS server: where to start?

    Rather than having all of my computers go out to the internet and download their Automatic Updates, I am seriously considering building a WSUS server. That is, a Windows Update server. I have read some articles, and they have been helpful, but not complete. The following is what I have gleaned are the steps I need to take: Commission a computer to be the server with Windows 2003 Server. Install the WSUS package(s) and select the type of updates to check for. Configure the rest of my computers to be clients of this server. Set the clients to receive updates from the server. My questions are as follows: Does the server have to run Windows 2003 Server, or will Windows XP Professional work? Where do I download the WSUS packages from? How can I configure my computers to look for updates from my server instead of the internet? Thanks!!

  • Can a non domain server obtain it's updates from a domain WSUS

    Anyone know if it is possible to get a non-domain Server to pick-up it's updates from a domain included WSUS server? Just thinking about Hyper-V host Servers, in a single server environment clearly this cannot be part of the domain because at the time the VM Host boots the Domain Controllers is not available. However is there any way to make this Hyper-V Host collect it's updates from the WSUS server.

    I use a distribution that uses apt for package management and am accustomed to letting apt grab a list of package changes. I generally let it install all the needed security updates. I've been considering migrating to slackware. However, it seems slackware does not have a package management system. How would I learn about new security updates?   • Does aria2 support write small files in batch?

    I'm using aria2 to download 8 million jpg from flickr. Each image is about 100KB. I got a list of urls of these images in a txt file, the format is: http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1070/1151334893_5a8e7f77f4.jpg I'm wondering whether aria2 support writing small files in batch? Say write 100 image to disk when all of them are download in the memory, not just write every single file when the download is finished. Because I think writing in batch will better protect my hard disk. Or do you have other software or opensource code to recommend?

  • What to have in sources.list on an Ubuntu LTS server (production)?

    I have several Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers in production and I'm using apticron to check that my software is up to date, security-wise. However, by default, Ubuntu has the lucid-updates repository enabled. This means lots of low-priority updates (such as this) that I don't need and thus, extra work for me. Is it okay to just remove the lucid-updates line(s) in sources.list? I still get security updates via lucid-security, right?   • Visual Studio 2010: Is it possible to force editor to use ANSI rather than UTF-8?

    I am having issues with some files in automated processes, specifically with batch files and sql files. Visual Studio seems to create these as UTF-8 rather than ansi and adds some kind of special characters to the beginning of the file (I think this is a called a pre-amble) This breaks running batch files and running swl files through osql.exe. I have had issues myself in the past in creating text files using C#, but can get around that through encoding. However its seems a bit strange I cant use Visual studio to create batch files and sql files in a database project for automation.

  • CMD file time not always matching windows explorer file time

    I have a set of file I need to set the created, modified and last access date to exif date taken value, after a copy between 2 folders (might be fat32 on memory card or ntfs on fixed or usb disk). When I copy a file, the date and time switch to the current date. Then I change all 3 dates manually, either with change attributes in windows explorer or far manager on the command line. To make it faster I wrote a batch script getting original file dates (with php and function stat), building a batch script that invoke nircmd setfiletime for each file. Then I apply this batch to the copied version. The operation is relatively fast and reliable. Unfortunately, a bunch of files have last access and created time different in cmd and windows explorer (1H difference). Very strangely, it happens with dates between november and february, which make the operation unreliable. Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?

  • How can I prevent Windows Update from crashing my computer?

    I have Automatic Updates enabled and every now and then I'll get that little pop-up window that nags me to reboot to complete the update process. Usually, I ignore it and after 2 days my computer crashes. It crashes by freezing all the programs, including Windows Explorer, to the point that I can't even use CTRL-Alt-Delete (and my mouse lags). I'm pretty sure it's Windows Updates that is causing this. So, for now, I've disabled Windows Updates.
