  • The .NET Rocks! Visual Studio 2010 Road Trip

    Carl Franklin and Richard Campbell, the two .NET Rocks radio show hosts, have decided to set off to 15 cities in the US, between April 19th and May 7th, in their DotNetMobile (a 30 foot RV). What for you'll ask me? Well, to drive around the US, meet up with .NET developers, and show off the latest and greatest in Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0! Each evening, they stop in a city and host a three hour event in front of a 100 to 300 crowd of developers, where Carl is showing off media features in Silverlight 4 and their road trip tracking application, whilst Richard is demo-ing the web performance testing features of VS2010 using his portable server rig. But before they take to the stage, they have a special guest brought in - a rock star from the Visual Studio world - whom they interview for an hour as a .NET Rock episode. So far, they've had - amongst others - Phil Haack, a Program Manager with the ASP.NET team working on ASP.NET MVC, Dan Fernandez, an Evangelism Manager in the Developer and Platform Evangelism team at Microsoft, and Beth Massi, Senior Program Manager on the Visual Studio Community Team at Microsoft. I love the fact that the audience gets a chance to participate, ask questions and have a great laugh, as you can hear in the first episode! Along the way, the .NET Rocks guys are giving away great prizes (including .NET Reflector Pro, ANTS Memory Profiler licenses, and "40" LCD TVs!). Even more out of the ordinary, at each stop on the road trip, one lucky attendee (who entered in the Ride Along competition) gets to jump in the RV with Carl and Richard and ride along with them to the next stop on the roadtrip.   • Getting Started with Kinect for Windows.

    Hello folks,      Recently I got involved in a project for building a demo application for one of our customers with Kinect for Windows. Yes, something similar what Tom Cruise did in the movie Minority Report. Waving arms, moving stuff around, swipes, speech recognition, manipulating computer screens without even touching it. Pretty cool!!! The idea in the movie showed us how technology would be after 50 years from that day.   Minority Report Movie clip.           Well, that 50 years of time frame got squeezed and recently on Feb 1st 2012, Microsoft released the official Kinect for Windows SDK. That’s just 10 years from the movie release. Although, the product is in it early stages but with developer creativity and continuously improving hardware, those features shown in the movie are not very far away from becoming a reality. Soon after releasing the SDK, Microsoft again announced in March the release of its new Kinect for Windows SDK version 1.5 which is coming out in sometime May. More history about Kinect. Anyways, so for a newbie with Kinect, where would you start. Here is what I would suggest you can do. Watch the Kinect for Windows Quick start Series by Den Fernandez. Download the Kinect for Windows SDK and start playing around with the demos in it. It also comes with some basic Kinect documentation. Coding4Fun Kinect Projects | Lot many more videos and open sources projects information. Kinect for Windows Session at Techdays NL demo by Jesus Rodriguez. Book: Beginning Kinect Programming with the Microsoft Kinect SDK.  | I did go through few of the chapters in this book and based on that, it does talk deeply about core Kinect concepts but in very easy to understand way. I would definitely suggest this book for any Kinect developers. I liked the way it explained the Gestures recognition in Chapter 6. Buy your Kinect device from either Amazon or NewEgg. You will get it cheaper then buying it from Microsoft Store. Personally, I love Newegg.com as I never had any order related or shipping issues with them. I always hate developing UI application but well, you would need to get your hands dirty with WPF too in order to work with Kinect. So get started with WPF concepts too. I will keep adding stuff to the list once I come across them but so far the above list would definitely get you started building your first Kinect apps. Till then Happy Kinecting…!!!!!   • jQuery autocomplete: taking JSON input and setting multiple fields from single field

    I am trying to get the jQuery autocomplete plugin to take a local JSON variable as input. Once the user has selected one option from the autocomplete list, I want the adjacent address fields to be autopopulated. Here's the JSON variable that declared as a global variable in the of the HTML file: var JSON_address={"1":{"origin":{"nametag":"Home","street":"Easy St","city":"Emerald City","state":"CA","zip":"9xxxx"},"destination":{"nametag":"Work","street":"Factory St","city":"San Francisco","state":"CA","zip":"94104"}},"2":{"origin":{"nametag":"Work","street":"Umpa Loompa St","city":"San Francisco","state":"CA","zip":"94104"},"destination":{"nametag":"Home","street":"Easy St","city":"Emerald City ","state":"CA","zip":"9xxxx"}}}</script> I want the first field to display a list of "origin" nametags: "Home", "Work".     Using V3 of the google maps API, is there any reliable way to format addresses with the line break? If I wanted to, I guess I could look for the proper types (street_number,route, etc) as well. I'd love it if anyone had a better way than what I"m doing here...

So if I inserting "San Francisco", the slug would be "usa-california-san-francisco" public function postXXXXXX($event) { ... $event->getInvoker()->slug = $slug; } The problem is that I'm inserting a new object with no reference to its parent. After it's saved, I insert it to the tree. So I can't change the slug until then. I think a Transaction listener could work, but I'm use there is a better way I'm not seeing right now. thanks!

  • LSI MegaRAID Expected Chip Temperature?

    We recently built a replicating SAN array from 2x Dell R720XD's, we are using LSI 9270-8i MegaRAID cards with CacheCade 2.0, BBU and Write Back cache enabled. Our cards are showing HUGE chip temperatures (97*C+ with NO disk activity!). Our R720's are in auto temp management mode so the max exhaust temp is 50*C. The MegaRAID cards are passively cooled and depend on good airflow to cool them - however is 97*C normal? - I have seen reference to 60*C max ambients but nothing for chip temp.

What is the best and easiest way to move the server to new hardware? It is one complete box, we do not have any SAN's or any complicated setup. We do have a couple of SQL databases running on the server and we also use Exchange. I'm sure there must be some easy way to move everything :-)

Cluster seems OK but the storage become the single point of failure and also I do not have a SAN. Can you please tell me if there are other ways to protect the application?     We have 3x ESX hosts and 2x SANS that we wish to move to a redundant 10G networking infrastructure. We have 4x Dell PowerConnect 8024F's to provide our backbone and are configured as so (only core switches relevant to this question): So the questions are: 1) Do the interconnects between the 4x 8024F's need to be LAG'd or just STP'd 2) As the NICs on the servers are split across 2 switches, does any special configuration need to be done here or on the switches? 3) If a link or switch fails will the switches automatically find a new path to the Server/SAN?

  • Best filesystem choices for NFS storing VMware disk images

    Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages. What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?

  • How to replicate wwwroot over multiple IIS web servers with NLB without NAS?

    We're adding a second server with Windows NLB for a bit of redundancy (ie the power goes on one of the servers - I know its not the best solution). How can we keep the data identical between the servers? Dont want to use a SAN or NAS as thats just something else to go wrong. Customers can upload images with the web app so changes could be made on either server, as well as us uploaded a few changed files. Thanks

  • Printing special / extended characters on web page - Firefox or printer issue?

    My dad brought this to my attention and I'm looking into it, but thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any ideas... He's running Win7, using Firefox and printing to a wireless connected Brother HL-2170W printer. He's got a web page (http://cornandsoybeandigest.com/inputs/fertilizer/applying-nitrogen-after-planting-0512/index.html) that has extended/special characters in it - the funny "a" in Fernandez. The characters show correctly in Firefox on the page. He printed it, and the extended "a" printed as a diamond with a question mark. He says it shows that way in the print preview, too. I pulled up the same page in Ubuntu, Firefox, and it displayed in my print preview and physically printed everything correctly. I just checked on my wife's Win7 PC in Firefox and the print preview looked correct on her system, too. We have a Brother 2040 here. Soooo, my question is, is this possibly a problem in the browser somehow, or the printer driver? I'm leaning towards the printer driver now, but I can't say I've run into this before. Is it a setting somewhere? I just installed this printer for him the other day, using the CD that came with it; I could try updating the driver from Brother's website I guess. Is there anything else I should look at or check? Thanks!

    I have been wanting to experiment with Windows clustering systems in my spare time, so I need a free, preferably open source, iSCSI Target that can support 2k3 and 2k8 fail-over and possibly High availability clustering. I have tried the ubuntu iscsi target package in a vmware environment, but it fails at the 2k8 tests. In simple terms I want to build a "Poor man's San" for windows and have it be able to do more than just be drives.

A client has a lot of business logic coded into their database and I need to find where it is using certain strings of text?   • Is it possible to use Linux as a Fibre Channel Raid Disk Box?

    You probably all know the relatively simple RAID boxes exporting a bunch of SATA disks as one big drive via FC, SAS or iSCSI, like the HP StorageWorks MSA2000, Infortrends EonStore series or many different other models from different manufacturers. Is it possible to create such a device with Linux, a few disks and an FC controller, using the controller in the reverse direction than usual? This would come handy to test some ideas and concepts in an emerging SAN environment.

  • Running a custom VirtualPathProvider with a PreCompiled website

    Hi, currently I have a custom VirtualPathProvider in a Asp.net MVC web application. This VirtualPathProvider checks the Area from the route "/{Area}/{Controller}/..." and uses the NameSpace.{Area}.Main.dll module to return the views that are contained in that assembly as Embedded Resources. This works great and I don't have to deploy any ascx, js, css files. Now my problem is this: I would like to precompile the aspx and ascx files in the assembly and instead of having the views as embedded resources I would have the view class with all the Response.Write and dings and dongs. I can precompile the views using the aspnet_compiler but I keep getting an error when ever the ViewEngine tries to find the view and fails. My main goal is to have a way for the first time usage of a certain view/usercontrol would be faster and don't wait for the compilation to happen. This is a requirement since the application could be grouped into plugins and this plugins be deployed into the Bin directory. Any thoughts? With best regards Carlos Sobrinho

  • Cocoa - How to copy files to /usr/share?

I'm developing an "installation" like cocoa application wich needs to take care of some http request, some file system reading, copying files to /usr/share, set up cron (not launchd) and ask some information to user. I discarded PackageMaker since I need more flexibility. Currently everything is going well, but on my last installation step, I need to: Delete my previously installed application folder (if exists). It's always the same path: /usr/share/MY_APP Create again the application folder at: /usr/share/MY_APP Copy application files to /usr/share/MY_APP Update a cron job It's very important that /usr/share/MY_APP keeps protected with administrative privileges, so a regular shouldn't delete it.
