• Wipe, Delete, and Securely Destroy Your Hard Drive’s Data the Easy Way

- by The Geek
Giving a computer to somebody else? Maybe you’re putting it out on Craigslist to sell to a stranger—either way, you’ll want to make sure that your drive is completely wiped, scrubbed, and clean of any personal data. Here’s the easy way to do it. If you only have access to an Ubuntu Live CD or thumb drive, you can actually use that instead if you prefer, and we’ve got you covered with a full guide to securely wiping your PC’s hard drive. Otherwise, keep reading. Wipe the Drive with DBAN Darik’s Boot and Nuke CD is the easiest way to permanently and totally destroy every bit of personal information on that drive—nobody is going to recover a thing once this is done. The first thing you’ll need to do is download a copy of the ISO image, and then burn it to a blank CD with something really useful like Imgburn. Just choose Burn image to Disc at the start screen, select the little file icon, grab the downloaded ISO, and then go. If you need a little more help, we’ve got you covered with a beginner’s guide to burning an ISO image. Once you’re done, stick the disc into the drive, start the PC up, and then once you boot to the DBAN prompt you’ll see a menu. You can pretty much ignore everything on here, and just type… autonuke And there you are, your disk is now being securely wiped. Once it’s all done, you can remove the CD, and then either pack the PC up to sell, or re-install Windows on there if you feel like it. More Advanced Method If you’re really paranoid, want to run a different type of wipe, or just like fiddling with the options, you can choose F3 or hit Enter at the prompt to head to the advanced selection screen. Here you can choose exactly which drive to wipe, or hit the M key to change the method. You’ll be able to choose between a bunch of different wipe options. The Quick Erase is all you really need though. So there you are, easy PC wiping in one package. What about you? Do you make sure to wipe your old PCs before giving them away? Personally I’ve always just yanked out the hard drives before I got rid of an old PC, but that’s just me. • Beginner Geek: How to Burn an ISO Image to a Disc

- by Mysticgeek
There may be a time when you have an ISO image that you need to burn to a CD or DVD for use in a computer or other device. Today we show you how to do it using ImgBurn, ISO Recorder, and Windows Disc Image Burner in Windows 7. You might need to burn an ISO of an operating system, software app, CD, DVD…etc. It doesn’t matter what the ISO image is, burning an image is a fairly straight-forward process and here we’ll take a look at three free options to accomplish it. Using ImgBurn ImgBurn is an awesome free utility that will create ISO images, allow out burn almost anything, and a lot more. Although there are a lot advanced features available, burning an ISO to disc is easy. Download and install ImgBurn (link below) taking the defaults in the install wizard. The main thing to watch for and uncheck during installation is when it offers the worthless Ask Toolbar. The easiest way to use ImgBurn is to burn an image to disc is pop in a blank disc to the CD/DVD drive, right-click on the ISO file, and select Burn using ImgBurn. ImgBurn opens up with the source and destination fields already filled in. You can leave the default settings, then click the Write button. You’ll notice that the ImgBurn Log screen opens, this is by default and is meant to show error messages you may receive during the writing process. A successful burn! That is all there is to it…click Ok and close out of ImgBurn. Use ISO Recorder ISO Recorder (link below) is another great utility for burning ISO images to disc. They have a version for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (32 & 64-bit Versions). Pop your blank disc into your CD/DVD drive and right-click on the ISO image file and select Copy image to CD from the Context Menu. In the next screen the image file path is in the Source Image file field. Under Recorder select the drive with your blank disc, select a recording speed and click Next. You’ll see a progress screen while the data is written to the disc and finalizing… That’s it! Your disc will pop out and you can click Finish to close out of ISO Recorder. Use Windows 7 If You’re using Windows 7, use the built in Windows Disc Image Burner feature to burn ISO images to disc. The process is very straight-forward, and for a full walkthrough on this, check out our article on how to burn an ISO image in Windows 7. Conclusion You don’t need an expensive commercial application to burn an ISO image to disc. Using any one of these free utilities will get the job done quite nicely. • How to install PySide v0.3.1 on Mac OS X?

- by ivo
I'm trying to install PySide v0.3.1 in Mac OS X, for Qt development in python. As a pre-requisite, I have installed CMake and the Qt SDK. I have gone through the documentation and come up with the following installation script: export PYSIDE_BASE_DIR="<my_dir>" export APIEXTRACTOR_DIR="$PYSIDE_BASE_DIR/apiextractor-0.5.1" export GENERATORRUNNER_DIR="$PYSIDE_BASE_DIR/generatorrunner-0.4.2" export SHIBOKEN_DIR="$PYSIDE_BASE_DIR/shiboken-0.3.1" export PYSIDE_DIR="$PYSIDE_BASE_DIR/pyside-qt4.6+0.3.1" export PYSIDE_TOOLS_DIR="$PYSIDE_BASE_DIR/pyside-tools-0.1.3" pushd . cd $APIEXTRACTOR_DIR cmake . cd $GENERATORRUNNER_DIR cmake -DApiExtractor_DIR=$APIEXTRACTOR_DIR . cd $SHIBOKEN_DIR cmake -DApiExtractor_DIR=$APIEXTRACTOR_DIR -DGeneratorRunner_DIR=$GENERATORRUNNER_DIR . cd $PYSIDE_DIR cmake -DShiboken_DIR=$SHIBOKEN_DIR/libshiboken -DGENERATOR=$GENERATORRUNNER_DIR . cd $PYSIDE_TOOLS_DIR cmake . popd Now, I don't know if this installation script is ok, but apparently everything works fine. Each component (apiextractor, generatorrunner, shiboken, pyside-qt and pyside-tools) gets compiled into its own directory. The problem is that I don't quite understand how PySide gets into the system's python environment. In fact, when I start a python shell, I cannot import PySide: >>> import PySide Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named PySide Note: I am aware of the Installing PySide - OSX question, but that question is not relevant anymore, because it is about a specific a dependency on the Boost libraries, but with version 0.3.0 PySide moved from a Boost based source code to a CPython one.

• UTF-8 to Unicode conversion

- by sandeep
Hi, I am having problems with converting UTF-8 to Unicode. Below is the code: int charset_convert( char * string, char * to_string,char* charset_from, char* charset_to) { char *from_buf, *to_buf, *pointer; size_t inbytesleft, outbytesleft, ret; size_t TotalLen; iconv_t cd; if (!charset_from || !charset_to || !string) /* sanity check */ return -1; if (strlen(string) < 1) return 0; /* we are done, nothing to convert */ cd = iconv_open(charset_to, charset_from); /* Did I succeed in getting a conversion descriptor ? */ if (cd == (iconv_t)(-1)) { /* I guess not */ printf("Failed to convert string from %s to %s ", charset_from, charset_to); return -1; } from_buf = string; inbytesleft = strlen(string); /* allocate max sized buffer, assuming target encoding may be 4 byte unicode */ outbytesleft = inbytesleft *4 ; pointer = to_buf = (char *)malloc(outbytesleft); memset(to_buf,0,outbytesleft); memset(pointer,0,outbytesleft); ret = iconv(cd, &from_buf, &inbytesleft, &pointer, &outbytesleft);ing memcpy(to_string,to_buf,(pointer-to_buf); } main(): int main() { char UTF []= {'A', 'B'}; char Unicode[1024]= {0}; char* ptr; int x=0; iconv_t cd; charset_convert(UTF,Unicode,"UTF-8","UNICODE"); ptr = Unicode; while(*ptr != '\0') { printf("Unicode %x \n",*ptr); ptr++; } return 0; } It should give A and B but i am getting: ffffffff fffffffe 41 Thanks, Sandeep

• Installing Windows on HP Proliant Servers without SmartStart

- by Fitzroy
I have a PXE server for deploying Windows XP and Windows 7 to workstations. The process is as follows: Boot the workstation from the NIC. Workstation sends a DHCP request. DHCP server responds with an IP address and the location of the PXE server. Workstation downloads WinPE image file from PXE server via TFTP Workstation stores WinPE image file in memory and executes it. Once booted into WinPE, I connect to a network share to gain access to either the Windows XP or Windows 7 installation files. A custom script is launched to guide you through the process of formatting and partitioning the hard drive(s) (using DISKPART and FORMAT). Another custom script asks for details such as the hostname to assign to the workstation. The answers provided are used to build an unattended answer file (SIF [Setup Information File] for WinXP and XML for Win7). The Windows setup EXE is launched, passing the unattended answer file to it as a parameter. The Windows XP and Windows 7 installation sources have been customised to include the drivers for our Dell workstations. They also run a number of scripts upon first booting up to install software packages. This process works very well for our workstations and I would now like to use it for building our servers too. The vast majority of our servers are HP Proliant DL360 G6, DL380 G5 and DL380 G6. They’re running Windows Server 2003 (various editions) or 2008 (various editions). To date, we have always built the HP Proliant servers using the SmartStart CD provided. SmartStart does three useful things for us: Setup RAID with HP Array Configuration Utility (ACU). Installs and configures SNMP Installs various HP Tools for Windows (HP Array Configuration Utility, HP Array Diagnostic Utility, HP Proliant Integrated Management Log Viewer, etc) Using SmartStart I have never had to manually download and install Windows drivers for network, sound, video, etc. I'm not sure if this is because SmartStart copies drivers from the CD during setup, or whether Windows just has the drivers natively in its driver CAB. If I abandon the SmartStart CD in favour of my PXE server I would have to do the following: As I wont have access to ACU, I'll configure the RAID (before booting to the PXE server) by pressing F8 (during the boot process) to access Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA). Installation of SNMP and the HP Tools will have to be installed once the Windows installation is complete using the Proliant Support Pack. Is this method OK? Is there anything that the SmartStart CD does that I'll be unable to do by other means? Are there any disadvantages to not using the SmartStart CD? Many thanks. UPDATE 05/01/12 I’ve been reading through the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit documentation. The scripting toolkit contains command line tools which work within WinPE and can such things as configure BIOS settings, configure an array and setup ILO. I’m personally not too bothered about configuring BIOS settings as I rarely deviate from the defaults (unless the server is to be a Hyper-V host). I’m not too fussed about being able to configure the array from within WinPE, as I’m happy to just press F8 and use Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA). Although, if it’s easy enough to do, I will explore this further, as it saves time if everything can be configured from within WinPE. One of the nice features all the tools possess is that you can pass input files to them. EG. Configure one server to your requirements, capture its configuration to a file (using the appropriate tool), you can then use the tool on other servers passing the input file with the captured configuration. Array controller drivers appear to be included with the toolkit along with example of how to incorporate them within a WinPE build. I suppose WinPE won’t be able to see logical volumes (I.E 2x physical disks in a RAID 1 configuration) without the array controller drivers? I mentioned in my post that SmartStart normally installs a bunch of Windows HP tools for you. I’ve had a look today, and if you run the SmartStart CD from within Windows all the tools can be installed. Therefore I can do this after the Windows installation is complete. The SmartStart CD appears to contain a lot Windows drivers. I can customise my Windows 2008 source to incorporate these drivers. However, I understand that incorporating an array controller driver is a little different to most drivers. I believe that you have to provide the driver during the very early stages of the Windows setup. I’m working through the Scripting Toolkit documentation to try and work this out...

• How to format a dos path to a unix path on cygwin command line

- by Jennette
When using Cygwin, I frequently copy a Windows path and manually edit all of the slashes to Unix format. For example, if I am using Cygwin and need to change directory I enter: cd C:\windows\path then edit this to cd C:/windows/path (Typically, the path is much longer than that). Is there a way to use sed, or something else to do this automatically? For example, I tried: echo C:\windows\path|sed 's|\|g' but got the following error sed: -e expression #1, char 7: unterminated `s' command My goal is to reduce the typing, so maybe I could write a program which I could call. Ideally I would type: conversionScript cd C:/windows/path and this would be equivalent to typing: cd C:\windows\path

• How to store a linked list in a struct in C

- by LuckySlevin
typedef struct child_list {int count; char vo[100]; child_list*next;} child_list; typedef struct parent_list { char vo[100]; child_list * head; int count; parent_list * next; } parent_list; As you can see there are two structures. child_list is used to create a linked list. And this list will be stored in a linked list of parent list. My problem is to display the child list which in the parent_list. My desire to get while displaying the linked list of parent_list: This lists work with this logic. I already made append and other stuff. For example if i enter ab cd ab ja cd ab Word Count List ab 3 cd->ja cd 2 ab->ab ja 1 cd The problematic part is displaying child_list which is in the parent_list nodes(List column of output). I don't know my question is clear please ask for further info.

• Is there a way to find a specific file and then change into the directory containing it in one go?

- by bergyman
I'm looking for a way to find what I know will be a unique file, and then change into the directory containing that file. Something along the lines of: find . -name 'Subscription.java' | xargs cd Or: find . -name 'Subscription.java' -exec cd {} \; I know this won't work because it's both trying to cd supplying the entire absolute path, which contains the file, and also because xargs can't do any built in shell commands...but you get the point of what I want to accomplish.

• Rip and Convert DVD’s to an ISO Image

- by Mysticgeek
If you own a lot of DVD’s, you might want to convert them to an ISO image for backup and easily playing them on your media center. Today we take a look at ripping your discs using DVDFab, then using ImgBurn to create an ISO image of the ripped DVD files. Rip DVD with DVDFab6 DVDFab will remove copy protection and rip the DVD files for free. Other components in the suite require you to purchase a license after the 30 day trial, but you’ll still be able to rip DVD’s after the trial. Install DVDFab by accepting the defaults (link below)…a system restart is required to complete the install process. The first time you run it, a welcome screen is displayed. If you don’t want to see it again check the box Do not show again, then Start DVDFab. Pop the DVD in your drive and click Next. Now select your region and check Do not show again, then OK. It will then open the DVD and begin to scan it. Under DVD to DVD you can select either Full Disc or Main Movie depending on what you want to rip. If you want to burn the DVD to a disc after it’s created select the Full Disc option. Now click the Start button to begin the ripping process. After the ripping process has completed, you’ll get a message telling you it’s waiting for you to put in a blank DVD. Since we aren’t burning the disc, just cancel the message. Click Finish and close out of DVDFab or just minimize it if you’re going to keep using it to rip another DVD. By default the temporary directory is in My Documents \ DVDFab \ Temp…however you can change it in settings. If you go to the Temp directory you’ll see the DVD files listed there… Convert Files to ISO with ImgBurn Now that we have the files ripped from the DVD, we need to convert them to an ISO image using ImgBurn (link below). Open it up and from the main menu click on Create image file from files/folders. Click on the folder icon to browse to the location of the ripped DVD files. Browse to the DVDFab temp directory and the VIDEO_TS folder for the source and click Ok. Then choose a destination directory, give the ISO a name, and click Save. In this case we ripped the Unbreakable DVD, so named it that. So now in ImgBurn you have the source being the ripped DVD files, and the destination for the ISO…then click the Build button. If you don’t create a volume label, ImgBurn is kind enough to create on for you. If everything looks correct, click Ok. Now wait while ImgBurn goes through the process of converting the ripped DVD files to an ISO image. The process has successfully completed. The ISO image of the DVD will be in the output directory you selected earlier. Now you can burn the ISO image to a blank DVD or store it on an external hard drive for safe keeping. When you’re done, you’ll probably want to go into the temp DVDFab folder and delete the VOB and other files in the Video_TS folder as they will take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Conclusion Although this method requires two programs to make an ISO out of a DVD, it’s extremely quick. When burning DVD’s of various lengths, it took less than 30 minutes to get the final ISO. Now, you’ll have your DVD movies backed up in case something were to happen to the discs and are no longer playable. If you use Windows Media Center to watch your movies, check out our article on how to automatically mount and view ISO files in Windows 7 Media Center. • unexpected EOF and end of document

- by WASasquatch
I have been fiddling with this code for a few days. Mind you I am a beginner. I just want to get my script to be able to download a remote file, and scan MineCraft plugins. I got the scan plugins to work, but I'm having two other issues. One, I can't get the mc_addplugin to work correctly, and I get a Unexpected EOF and unexpected end of document when running any other command besides mc_scanplugins or mc_start bash: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"' bash: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file Help would be so much appreciated! Thanks in advance. #!/bin/bash # /etc/init.d/craftbukkit # version 0.9.1 2012-07-06 (YYYY-MM-DD) ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: craftbukkit # Required-Start: $local_fs $remote_fs # Required-Stop: $local_fs $remote_fs # Should-Start: $network # Should-Stop: $network # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6 # Short-Description: Starts craftbukkit server # Description: Starts and controls the craftbukkit server ### END INIT INFO # SETTINGS SERVICE='craftbukkit-1.2.5-R1.0.jar' OPTIONS='nogui' USERNAME='smith' # LIST ALL THE WORLDS IN YOUR CRAFTBUKKIT SERVER FOLDER WORLDS[1]='world' WORLDS[2]='world_nether' WORLDS[3]='world_the_end' WORLDS[4]='flat_world' MCPATH='/var/www/servers/Foundation' PLUGINSPATH='/var/www/servers/Foundation/plugins' TEMPPLUGINS='/var/www/servers/Foundationplugins/temp_plugins' BACKUPPATH='/var/www/servers/Foundation/backup' CPU_COUNT=2 INVOCATION="java -Xmx2024M -Xms2024M -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=$CPU_COUNT -XX:+AggressiveOpts -jar $SERVICE $OPTIONS" ME=`whoami` as_user() { if [ $ME == $USERNAME ] ; then bash -c "$1" else su - $USERNAME -c "$1" fi } mc_start() { if pgrep -u $USERNAME -f $SERVICE > /dev/null then echo "$SERVICE is already running!" else echo "Starting $SERVICE..." cd $MCPATH as_user "cd $MCPATH && screen -dmS craftbukkit $INVOCATION" sleep 7 if pgrep -u $USERNAME -f $SERVICE > /dev/null then echo "$SERVICE is now running." else echo "Error! • ./kernelupdates 100% cpu usage

- by Vaibhav Panmand
I have a CENTOS6 server running with some wordpress & tomcat websites. In the last two days it has been crashing continuously. After investigation we found that kernelupdates binary consuming 100% cpu on server. Process is mentioned below. ./kernelupdates -B -o stratum+tcp://hk2.wemineltc.com:80 -u spdrman.9 -p passxxx But this process seems invalid kernel update. Might be server is compromised and this process is installed by hacker, So I've killed this process & removed apache user's cron entries. But somehow this process started again after couple of hours & cron entries also restored, I am searching for the thing which is modifying cron jobs. Does this process belong to a mining process? How can we stop cronjob modification and clean the source of this process? • Easy Install Resets Hardware Settings

- by bob5972
I think there's a problem with the Easy Install setup. I selected "Installer disc image," and it came up and said that it would use "Easy Install," I think I hit next, and then I went back changed my mind, and selected "I will install the operating system later." After finishing the wizard, I think it still went and ran Easy Install, because it auto-installed VMware tools and I never got to select anything for my windows setup. Then, when it was finished, all the hardware changes I had made were lost. The RAM was changed from 2 GB back to the default of 1 GB, my CD ROM drive was set back to "Use a Physical Drive" and "Connect at Power On", and the Floppy Drive was also set to "Connect at Power On", after I disabled them. I was trying to install Windows 7, and I wasn't sure if I could change the RAM settings after installation without needing to reactivate it, so I deleted the VM and tried to start over. This time, the "Installer disc image" had my Win7 image pre-selected, so I clicked "I will install it myself later," set my hardware again, and tried to boot off my CD. Again,it did an Easy Install, and reset my RAM and my drive settings. So I deleted it again and the third time it still had the Win7 image pre-selected, but this time I unplugged all the drives and let it try to boot off the empty harddrive and fail, and made sure it kept all my hardware settings. Then, I powered it off, put my Win7 image in the guest CD ROM, and powered it on. This time it finally let me run the installer and pick my language, and type a user name. This time when I powered it off it kept my hardware settings. I can duplicate the error by doing exactly the steps above. Creating a new VM, selecting my "Installer Image," hitting next, going back, selecting "I will Install it myself," and then finish the wizard, and customizing my hardware right before the end, setting the CD Rom drive to the same installer media, and setting "Connect on Power On." (If I start it without the CD ROM in the first time, it doesn't do it). When I power on, I'm not prompted for any install information (like language and user name), and when it runs the first timemy hardware choices are reset (like the RAM back to 1 GB). If it helps, I'm running VMware Workstation 7.0.1 build-227600 on Gentoo Linux

• WebLogic Scripting Tool Tip – relax the syntax with the easy button

- by james.bayer
I stumbled on to this feature in WLST tonight called easeSyntax. Apparently it’s a hidden feature that one of the WebLogic support engineers blogged about that allows you to simplify the commands in the interactive mode to have fewer parentheses and quotes. For example, see how some of the commands instead of typing “ls()” I can type '”ls” or “cd(“/somepath”)” can become “cd /somepath”. It’s not going to save the world, but it will help cut down on some extra typing. The example I was researching when stumbling into this was for how to print the runtime status of deployed application named “hello” on the “AdminServer”. See the below output. wls:/base_domain/domainConfig> easeSyntax() You have chosen to ease syntax for some WLST commands. However, the easy syntax should be strictly used in interactive mode. Easy syntax will not function properly in script mode and when used in loops. You can still use the regular jython syntax although you have opted for easy syntax. Use easeSyntax to turn this off. Use help(easeSyntax) for commands that support easy syntax wls:/base_domain/domainConfig> domainRuntime wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime> ls dr-- AppRuntimeStateRuntime dr-- CoherenceServerLifeCycleRuntimes dr-- ConsoleRuntime dr-- DeployerRuntime dr-- DeploymentManager dr-- DomainServices dr-- LogRuntime dr-- MessageDrivenControlEJBRuntime dr-- MigratableServiceCoordinatorRuntime dr-- MigrationDataRuntimes dr-- PolicySubjectManagerRuntime dr-- SNMPAgentRuntime dr-- ServerLifeCycleRuntimes dr-- ServerRuntimes dr-- ServerServices dr-- ServiceMigrationDataRuntimes -r-- ActivationTime Wed Dec 15 22:37:02 PST 2010 -r-- MessageDrivenControlEJBRuntime null -r-- MigrationDataRuntimes null -r-- Name base_domain -rw- Parent null -r-- ServiceMigrationDataRuntimes null -r-- Type DomainRuntime -r-x preDeregister Void : -r-x restartSystemResource Void : WebLogicMBean(weblogic.management.configuration.SystemResourceMBean) wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime> cd AppRuntimeStateRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime> ls -r-- ApplicationIds java.lang.String[active-cache#[email protected], coherence-web-spi#[email protected], coherence#3. -r-- Name AppRuntimeStateRuntime -r-- Type AppRuntimeStateRuntime -r-x getCurrentState String : String(appid),String(moduleid),String(subModuleId),String(target) -r-x getCurrentState String : String(appid),String(moduleid),String(target) -r-x getCurrentState String : String(appid),String(target) -r-x getIntendedState String : String(appid) -r-x getIntendedState String : String(appid),String(target) -r-x getModuleIds String[] : String(appid) -r-x getModuleTargets String[] : String(appid),String(moduleid) -r-x getModuleTargets String[] : String(appid),String(moduleid),String(subModuleId) -r-x getModuleType String : String(appid),String(moduleid) -r-x getRetireTimeMillis Long : String(appid) -r-x getRetireTimeoutSeconds Integer : String(appid) -r-x getSubmoduleIds String[] : String(appid),String(moduleid) -r-x isActiveVersion Boolean : String(appid) -r-x isAdminMode Boolean : String(appid),String(java.lang.String) -r-x preDeregister Void : wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime> cmo.getCurrentState('hello','AdminServer') 'STATE_ACTIVE' wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime/AppRuntimeStateRuntime> cd / wls:/base_domain/domainRuntime>
