  Hey guys I had a question regarding scalability for my RoR application. We have been optimizing our application over the last few days and after running blitz.io, notice that our application times out after maybe 1000 hits in 30 seconds we experienced massive timeouts. In the 1 minute test apparently 74% of users would have timed out. Look at the performance of my website: http://blitz.io/report/1c8eb2f395a5eadeabd62fd831ada9e5 Not saying that our website will in any way experience this now, but I wish to design the infrastructure to handle this. What is normally done in this situation? Currently we have one web server and one database server. Would load balancing be the route to go?

• OCS 2007: Issues with /LiveServer/MCUFactory

  I'm not really an Office Communications Server expert, but just trying to resolve some seemingly minor issues with a new install... The following error is occurring in the OCS event log, and when I try to visit https://servername:444/LiveServer/MCUFactory in Internet Explorer to test the address, I just get a "page cannot be displayed" error. I can telnet to port 444 on the server and verify that the port is open and listening. Any ideas? • Routing based on source address in Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hi, I'm implementing a direct routing load balanced solution using Windows Server 2008 R2 as back-end server. I've configured a loopback interface with the external IP address. This works, I am receiving packets with the external IP address and respond to them appropriately. However our infrastructure requires that traffic which is being load-balanced should go through a different gateway then any other traffic originating from the server, ie. updates etc. So basicly I need to route packets based on source address (external IP) to another gateway. The built-in Windows 'route' command allows routing based on destination address only. I've tried setting a default gateway on the loopback interface and mangled with weak/strong host send/receive parameters on the interfaces, however this didn't work. Is there any way around this, possibly using third party tools?

  Here is our problem: We have several webservers, which should be reached from public. The database servers that store the data for the web apps on those webservers though shall not have a public IP. So, since I want to be able to connect to the SQL servers using ssh for example, and those servers need to talk with each other, I had this idea: Internet | ------------------ | | Webserver 1 Webserver 2 Database Server | | | -------------- vLAN -------------- | PPTP | Workstation (my PC) My idea was that I can connect to the vLAN using PPTP so that I have access to all servers in that LAN, but the database server remains unvisible to the public. • Speedup vmware esx guest hdd access

  Hello, we run several windows servers and windows clients on our vmware esx. One of the Windows 2003 Servers is a build-server with major HDD-reads/writes. as it is our build server. This machine was a hardware before and was virtualized to the ESX. Is there any way to increase the HDD-Performance? Perhaps there are special windows (guest) drivers? The files are stored on a Raid6 base. Performance graph of vmware infrastructure client shows reads up to 650 KBps and writes up to 4000 KBps. Thank you. Regards, Uwe

• HP DL160 vs DL360 for virtualization

  Hi, We're planning to consolidate our infrastructure (a dozen servers). We'll buy two or three identical new servers who will be setup as a XenServer pool. Load balancing and HA tools will monitor the pool and vMotion VMs in case of failure/overload. I know that the DL100 series of HP servers is cheaper than the DL300 serie (in every sense of the word). As we don't need local storage (we have a SAN) and can live with a temporary down server (provided that Xen Server HA tools work as advertized), what are the downsides going with the DL100 serie ? • Microsoft ISA 2006 Log Extraction Issues

  Hi, We have a client running ISA2006 with logs going to MSDE. The MSDE database gets rotated. We have NO control over the client infrastructure. We need to get the logs out to a TEXT file on the server itself which will be forwarded to a remote server by other software we already have in place. My first thought was doing it via Stored Procs. Another option is vbscript? The actual table holding the logs has no primary key or other identifier so I think the dump should be done once a day for the previous day, but ideally it should run several times a day. Any ideas?

• Cannot Access Web Interface on HP 2510G

  I am currently setting up a new infrastructure with HP 2510s as edge switches and an HP E5406 as the main switch. I also have a DHCP and DNS server running on the same network. When i first set up one of my 2510 switches, I gave it a static IP through the console and then went to the web interface to continue my configuration. Later, I realized that I assigned it the wrong IP address, so i went through the web interface and changed the IP address to the correct one. Now, I can't access the web interface. I can telnet to the switch on the new IP address, but the web interface will not load. If I switch from static IP to DHCP, it loads the web interface. Any ideas on what could be causing the web server in the 2510 not to load with the new static IP address?

  I have been requested to investigate how I can reduce the downtime of our website upgrades. We maintain a DNN site with both public facing pages and member only pages. The member only pages are directly linked to our core application database while the public pages are not. Our current process is to redirect website users as soon as the upgrade process begins, which includes Backup of the Prod DB Update Prod DB Update Executables (Application) Upgrade Website Application (If this requires an update) Install Dependencies Upgrade sub systems like communication engine and payment broker Update various configuration files Perform testing of systems Restart all services Allow access to site This process can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on upgrade required, scripts to be run, size of database and number or portals. My initial thoughts are to restrict users to read only pages and any update pages would be unavailable. Could anyone please offer suggestions as to the best practices for what I would think to be a common problem so that we can reduce this down time and if we need infrastructure changes, I can put this to our technical department.

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone. • Can I use the Office 2007 Proofing Tools with Office 2010 RTM?

  Hi, I have just downloaded and installed Office 2010 RTM. Overall, it is very nice, but I miss having proofing tools available for my native language, Danish. I have installed the 2007 Proofing Tools, but they do not work with 2010: For this release we have made significant changes in the proofing infrastructure, therefore the Language Packs from previous Office versions including Office 2007 are not compatible with Office 2010. • PCs using certain IP addresses cannot ping out

  I'm having a very strange problem which I just can't get past. The way our network is set up, we have 2 locations. The main office with all our PCs, and servers/ We are then joined to a local ISP via microwave link and they provide our internet gateway and house an additional storage server for us. All of the network infrastructure is within our office The problem is... When some PCs (and servers) are assigned IP addresses, they cannot ping the gateway or remote server however the remote server can ping the PC. Most of our internal IP addresses work fine but specific ones (e.g. .29) has this problem all the time. There is nothing else using the ip address and no other network problems. When we switch the IP on the PC, it works fine. Please help, I'm going mad. Thanks, Steve

• What are the benefits of full VDI over Remote Desktop Services?

  We're talking about piloting VDI here, but the more research I do, the more it seems like it would make more sense just to upgrade and expand our TS (RDS) environment. I feel like you can pull off more sessions per core on RDS than on any VDI solution I've looked at. Is this the case? Is there a decision matrix anywhere describing the benefits of using full virtualized desktops over using a remote desktop farm? We need good video performance for clinical imaging - will this work better on one infrastructure or the other? (Does this question have a specific enough answer for it to be on SF? Regardless, I feel like having this here will be helpful for someone in the future...)

  I have a couple APC UPS - Smart-UPS RT 6000 RM XL Smart-UPS RT 5000 RM XL Unfortunately the power in my office likes to go out (out of my control) and hence the equipment powered by these UPS shuts down. They power a VMware infrastructure environment (VMware Lab Manager) and what I'd like to do is detect when one is on battery (say has been for x amount of time or has x percentage left) and run a script on this event.   My organization is about to implement 802.1X on our enterprise, but we currently use PXE-based OS deployment sequences in SCCM. I'm looking for a way to continue using PXE in an 802.1X environment. Our infrastructure uses Cisco network gear running at 12.2 (or newer). We are an all Windows network and all clients support 802.1X. All new workstations have Intel AMT available (but not factory configured). In a worst case scenario, we'll use a guest vlan for OSD, but I'd rather have the OSD occur in an authenticated session. I've seen white papers that describe using AMT to act as a supplicant for PXE boot, but can't find any implementation details...

Before I do so, I will need to speak to my manager on how to properly prepare and secure it since this is the first Mac that will be regularly used on the network in the office and company intranet.   I am building a small service where users will be assigned a subdomain such as: myusername.myservice.com anotheruser.myservice.com I know that I can set up a wildcard vhost and using some configuration regex, serve the files like so: myusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/myusername anotherusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/anotherusername The problem is that I would like to allow users to alias their own domain names to their service. I understand that for the webserver, once the user adds the domain via my web interface, I can easily create a vhost for the domain in nginx and then refresh the webserver. The problem is that I would prefer to NOT let the users add an A record of my webserver's IP address as I would prefer to keep things flexible (when we upgrade our infrastructure to something more complex to scale). What is the best way to achieve this?

• Getting FC11 to run under VMware Server, converted from physical machine

  I have a FC11 installation that I have converted to a VMware disk image to run om my VMware Server. I converted it with qemu-img, as the VMware Converter software apparently only converts Linux hosts to VMware Infrastructure servers. The disk image boots fine (grub is loaded and boots the kernel) but it seems like the disk is not found by the kernel, and the boot process stalls. Hotplugging USB devices work (the kernel prints debug information) and I'm able to press keys (Ctrl-Alt-Delete for instance). The VMware guest OS is set to RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (32 bit), and I have tried both the LSI Logic, LSI Logic SAS and VMware Accelerated SCSI SCSI controllers, to no avail. I'm able to boot an installer disk and get into rescue mode and mount the filesystem, so my question is, what do I need to do to the guest kernel / initrd image to make it recognize the virtual disk?

• Export SharePoint Wiki to PDF from the Command Line

  We use a SharePoint wiki* at the office to serve as a knowledgebase for our IT operations. Recently we went through a disaster recovery exercise where we realized we had a key hole in our plans: how do you restore the services if your instruction manual is down because some services are offline? Anyhow, we did realize that the wiki angle was definitely something we wanted to keep, but rather that we should explore a way to create offline backups of the wiki which could be easily read using common software we should be able to setup without any knowledge from the wiki. So, does anyone know of a good utility that can take a SharePoint wiki and dump it to PDF/Word/RTF/[INSERT HUMAN FRIENDLY FORMAT] easily from the command line? *-Yes, there are better solutions out there. But this was easy and used existing infrastructure and generally does what we need it to do.

• Splitting CA component off puppet master

  We are scaling our puppet infrastructure and would like to split off the CA component from the puppet master server to another server. Part of the change involves a servername change for the puppetmaster too. I'm no puppet expert but i'm at a point where I -think- we need to create a SAN cert with both the old and new names in it (to be safe), and then re-sign all the agent nodes all over again which is going to be a royal PITA. Is there a quicker/smarter way to do this? We already have hundreds of agent nodes out there and individually re-signing them will be an arduous task.

• Cloud Computing - Multiple Physical Computers, One Logical Computer

  I know that you can set up multiple virtual machines per physical computer. I'm wondering if it's possible to make multiple physical computers behave as one logical unit? Fundamentally the way I imagine it working is that you can throw 10 computers into a facility one day. You've got one client that requires the equivalent of two computers worth, and 100 others that eat up the remaining 8. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.

  I know that you can set up multiple virtual machines per physical computer. I'm wondering if it's possible to make multiple physical computers behave as one logical unit? Fundamentally the way I imagine it working is that you can throw 10 computers into a facility one day. You've got one client that requires the equivalent of two computers worth, and 100 others that eat up the remaining 8. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like hand partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's supporting infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.
