  • SSH Proxy (SOCKS) through remote computer - TCP & DNS

    My problem: Need DNS to be resolved through my remote machine. So I have a REMOTE that I can access from LOCAL via SERVER. This REMOTE can access a host TARGET_HOST. TARGET_HOST is setup in REMOTE's host file like so: 123.123.123.123 TARGET_HOST I want to be able to access (in the browser & my application) TARGET_HOST from LOCAL. I have setup a 'proxy' like so: LOCAL to SERVER: ssh -L 4567:LOCAL:4568 user@SERVER SERVER to REMOTE: ssh -D 4568 user@REMOTE LOCAL's network config is setup to use a proxy on localhost through port 4567. So, everything is great and I can see TARGET_HOST in my browser. The problem I have is that the DNS doesn't resolve from LOCAL and therefore some code I have going on in my application, fails. Can anyone help me? Can anyone suggest a better method?

  • Remote Desktop triggers a loud Beep on local machine - how to shut it up?

    When I remote desktop into a server, I get a loud beep coming out of my local machine whenever certain messageboxes pop up. (An example is to search for something in the Event Log - when the search finds no results, I get a message box accompanied by a loud beep) Annoyingly, the beep still happens even if I have sound turned off locally or the volume right down - it seems to be hooking in to some low level OS-beep mechanism. Any way to turn it off?

    Basically, Every morning at 6:00AM I have to do login to remote desktop, open a program, and click on a few things to make reservations before anyone else does. I want to know if there is any other way that this can be done by simply turning it into some form of a code and executing it instead of manually doing it.     I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

    Where there is VPN to remote server and then access to the database via local network interface, how can one establish a remote link between one's computer (with a programme such as Visual Studio 2010) and SQL Server (e.g. 2008 R2) ? Any attempts to create a direct link to the SQL Server are blocked. Whilst the SQL Server can be configured to allow external access, this provides its own host of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Can I limit remote desktop to a particular network card?

    I have two routers/internet connections connected to my PC. One is a slower connection with a fixed IP that I use for business, the other is a faster connection I use for day to day surfing. I have to use the fixed IP connection to log onto certain servers (due to security) to work but I'm finding that often my PC will try to use my other internet connection to connect which will get rejected (as it doesn't have the fixed IP). Can I limit remote desktop to use a particular network card to get around this problem. Note: I'm running Windows 7

  • Setting up logging for a remote backup script

    So I wrote up a short script that I am planning to run via a cron job daily to package up my site files and send them to a remote location. I also plan to incorporate DB dumps, but I have not gotten that far yet. My issue today however is that Im am uncertain how to log the output of each command for errors, warnings, or other pertinent information the command may output. I would also like to install sometype of fail safe so if something goes horribly wrong the script will stop dead in its tracks and notify me via email or something. Ok the email thing is not as critical, but would be nice. Does anybody have any ideas for that? Here is what I have so far.   • SQL Backup files, distinguish partial and full backup files

    I have scheduled backups running through SQL Agent, with Full Backups nightly, and differential backups hourly. Is there a way to determine which of the backup files is the Full backup, and which is the latest differential? Intuitively, it would seem the largest backup within 24 hours is the full, and the latest smaller backup is the partial. However, this isn't robust. Is there a way to probe the backup file to check the backup type? (Preferably in c#)

  • SAN performance issues storing SQL Server tempdb on a SAN that's being backed up

    I'm afraid I don't know much about SAN's so please forgive my lack of detail or technical terms. As a developer I've just completed and put on an existing production system a new application but it would appear to have tipped the scales regarding the performance of the backups being taken from the SAN. As I understand it there's a mirror of the SAN being taken usually constantly at the block-level. However, there seem to be so many new writes to the disk that the SAN mirroring/backup process can no longer keep up. I believe I've narrowed this down to SQL Servers tempdb which exists on a drive that contributes the largest portion of the problem! In fact I think tempdb has be contributing the largest portion of the issues all along regardless of my application! My question therefore is whether the tempdb should ever be mirrored or backed on the SAN and whether anyone else has gone through this sort of pain already? I'm wondering whether it's a best practise to make sure that tempdb is never mirrored on a SAN simply because any writes to it don't need to be saved. This also raises a slightly connected question - is it better to rely on SQL Servers built-in database backups tools (DB in full-recovery mode with full/differential and transaction log backups) or, as is the case with our application, SQL server is in simple recovery mode and never backed up since the SAN is mirrored and backed up?     Hi folks, i'm using Remote Desktop on Windows 7 RC1, connecting to a Windows 2008 server. Everytime i start a connection, i get the following popup window :- The certificate problem makes sense - it was created from my own server, which is not an offical certificate authority. Sure. So I need to tell my machine that any certificate that comes from my server, can u please accept. So i View the certificate and install it. I let it determine the best place to install it. eg Unfortunately, every time i connect, i still get that popup question. So i tried to manually tell where to install it. I said to install it at eg. but still i get the warning question. So .. does anyone have any suggestions?

  • What are the benefits of full VDI over Remote Desktop Services?

    We're talking about piloting VDI here, but the more research I do, the more it seems like it would make more sense just to upgrade and expand our TS (RDS) environment. I feel like you can pull off more sessions per core on RDS than on any VDI solution I've looked at. Is this the case? Is there a decision matrix anywhere describing the benefits of using full virtualized desktops over using a remote desktop farm? We need good video performance for clinical imaging - will this work better on one infrastructure or the other? (Does this question have a specific enough answer for it to be on SF? Regardless, I feel like having this here will be helpful for someone in the future...)

    It's unclear to me exactly how secure Remote Desktop access from Mac OS X to a Windows Server 2003 machine is. Is the communication encrypted by default? What level of encryption? Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? I found http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html but it's unclear how much of that is still relevant for current versions of RDP and Windows Server. I know I can tunnel RDP over ssh, but is that overkill or redundant?
