• Using 1and1.com Servers, SMTP Mail is Limited - Local XAMPP Server Works As Expected

  I'm starting to not like 1and1.com that much. I've used them for years, but mainly for simple sites without much need for configuration. I know there are better hosting companies out and I may go seeking them. The problem here is that on my Local XAMPP server (sitting on a network with Comcast ISP), I have a PHP script that uses PEAR::Mail to send mail using MIME. The script works find locally with either smtp.1and1.com and corresponding credentials and smtp.gmail.com with corresponding credentials, using appropriate ports, etc. 1and1 tells me that I have to change the MX record on the domain where this script runs in order to make this work. This doesn't make sense to me. Now I'm pretty new to all this, but how is it that this is the case? Why can my local server work just fine, out of the box, but their servers not? I have asked them these questions, but they are very vague and I cannot get any good answers from them. • Excel - "send to Mail recipient" creates 2nd copy of EMail in Inbox

  When sending Excel sheets using the menu item "File" - "Sent To" - "Mail recipient (as attachment)" I get additional copies of the email in the Inbox. When I press "send" then I get 2 copies of the email in Outlook - as expected one in the Outbox (which moves into the Sent folder as soon it is sent off) and an additional one in the Inbox. How do I stop the copy message appearing in the Inbox? System: Excel 2000, Outlook 2000, Windows XP. Antivirus is AVG Free 2011. I know this is a very old system, but it is not my PC and there isn't any chance to get it replaced in the near future yet. SOme further details: The copy in the inbox appears at the same time as the normal copy goes into the Outbox (i.e. as soon I press send). It doesn't contain anything in the From field (i.e. there is no sender, just the recipient of the mail). It has a different icon in Outlook to the other emails - the icon is the one for "saved or unsent message". I tried it with a few different spreadsheets and it happens with all of them. It happens with every recipient, and it only happens if sending from within Excel (i.e. using the Send to menu item). I can delete the attachment before sending and it will still create a copy. If I create a new message in Outlook and then add the Excel document as attachment then I don't get the copy of the message in the inbox, it only happens when using the send to item in Excel. It only started doing this recently. Around that time the Antivirus (AVG Free) was upgraded to the latest version (from the previous version - 2010? - to version 2011), but this might not be related. I thought I know Excel really well but have never seen this happening before, and I can't find any setting in Excel or Outlook that is causing this. Any ideas?

  Hello I'm trying to substitute citadel on my Virtual Private Server with something more simple. I dislike their documentation and the webmail client. I don't need any groupware feature. I need only an MTA with a nice looking web interface, SPAM and VIRUS check. I recently found the lamson project from Zed Shaw. Is that production ready? Do you had any real and good experience with It? On the latest-news page I see that the last release dates december 2009. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm really new to mail servers but I have to find a solution to manage sending and receiving mail on my VPS. I would accept also to build my VPS email server using a linux system like exim, postfix or whatever but I have really small needs and they will not grow in at least a year and i will be the only one user. I'm searching for something that I could build and manage easily, as I'm a novice linux sysadmin. Having also some good documentation or at least a robust step by step guide would be a plus.

• Preferred mail system/server for a company?

  Say you are responsible for setting up an email solution at a company. Which would be your choice? I know of the following options, but many of them not well: Gordano Mail System Exchange Exim Postfix Qmail Zimbra For having used it a little over two years, I really, really like Gordano Mail System. They offer a whole bunch of things, like calendaring, anti-spam, anti-virus, extremely complete and filterable logging options, aliases, a customizable webmail interface... And their software can be installed on both a Windows or Linux OS. In addition, their support is top-notch, their knowledgebase comprehensive (and, I will admit with a touch of pride, I have contributed, with my questions, to the addition of a few articles in there). Of course, they're not free, which can be a problem, but they're not Exchange, and they do offer pretty much everything that Exchange offers -- which is great if you want to stay away from that, but need all the features. Although, if you need a Blackberry Exchange Server, or something similar, I'm not sure what you should go for. So.. What would your choice be? Why? I've never played with a more DIY email solution, but I'm sure many people here have and wouldn't trade their setup for the world :)

• I want my logs sent to my mail with logrotate

  Not strictly a question about programming as such, more of a log handling question. Anyway. My company has multiple clients, and each of these clients have a set of logs that I'd rather much want to get sent to by e-mail to me. Now, another prerequisite is that they're hilighted by simple HTML. All that is very well, I've managed to make a hilighter for the given log types. So, what I do is I use logrotate's prerotate stuff to send the logs as an e-mail message. Example: /var/log/a.log /var/log/b.log { daily missingok copytruncate prerotate /usr/bin/python /home/foo/hilight_logs /var/log/{a,b}.log | /usr/sbin/sendmail -FLog\ mailer [email protected] [email protected] endscript } The problem with this approach is basically that logrotate sucks: it'll run the command for every log file specified in the specifier, and to my knowledge there's no way to know which of the log files is being handled. (Which wouldn't really help anyway.) Short of repeating the exact same logrotate up to 10 times on different machines, the only thing I can do is just to get bogged down with log spam every night. And I grew tired of it today, so I ask.

  I have setup a postfix server and wanted to test the piping of mail to my perl script where i can make use of it and filter the mails.I wrote a test script for that which just logs the information in txt file. but i don't see any changes on sending the mail. • Postfix relay all mail through SES except for one sending domain / address

  I'm thinking this is really really super simple, but I can't figure out what I need to do. I don't mess with Postfix much (Just let it run and do its thing) so I've got no idea where to even start with this. We have postfix currently configured to relay all mail out through SES using the code below. We need to modify this so that emails sent from one of our domains (domain.com) DO NOT go through SES. Everything else should continue to flow out through the SES connection. • Convert raw IMAP server data into local folders, then upload partial dataset to new IMAP server?

  I am transitioning a company with about 30 IMAP accounts, loaded with data (about 77GB total), to a new email host. The majority of the data will be converted into a local archive and distributed to the company computers as a static reference data set. The server side folders the users absolutely cannot do without being on the server will be uploaded back to the new server. I used Mac OS X Mail (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) to download the content. I notice some messages have the name [xxx].partial.emlx, which leads me to believe they have not been downloaded all the way. I have root access to the mail server data and could download the IMAP server data via FTP. I am not sure what utility to use to convert that data to local Mail.app mailboxes. Furthermore, I would appreciate any input on the best way to upload a portion of the data to the new server (GoDaddy), preserving the original dates of the messages. edit OK - forget the raw server data. I found a script that apparently does pretty good archiving IMAP folders to local mbx files. My main quest now is to batch upload a mailbox hierarchy to the new IMAP server without having to start-stop and deal with similar issues. Anyone know of a utility (hopefully for OS X, but if not, I'll fire up my XP virtual system...) that would be capable of this? Thanks, M

  Thunderbird does not delete messages from the POP server. I am a Yahoo Plus user and I can download messages from the inbox in Thunderbird from the Yahoo POP3 server. However, I want to delete read messages directly on the email client rather than go to Yahoo mail. OK, boys and girls, here is the way to do it. Go to Options- Advanced - Config Editor find the Name 'mail . pop3 . deleteFromServerOnMove' Set it to True True: Delete the copy of the message on the POP3 server if you move or delete the message. False(default): Only delete the copy of the message on the POP3 server if you delete the message. That's it, restart Thunderbird. You need to press 'Get Mail' everytime you want to sync with the email server, in order for you to make sure messages in the application is in sync with the email server.**

When I send mail (from OWA, OR Outlook) there is a delay of up to 3 minutes from when i send the message, to when it's received (in my gmail account for example) I've listed the headers below. • Which mailx package should I install for Nagios?

  I'm following the Nagios Ubuntu quickstart instructions. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 and installing Nagios 3.2.3. At the bottom of the docs it says I need to install the mailx and postfix packages. (Postfix is already installed.) But when I try to install mailx, I get asked which of 3 packages to install: $ sudo apt-get install mailx [sudo] password for nagios: Reading package lists... • Thunderbird adds ***UNCHECKED*** to subjects of GPG messages

  Thunderbird seems to consider it a great idea to add the string UNCHECKED in front of the subject of GPG encrypted messages. Well, its not a good idea but rather annoying. At first I thought it would be a mailserver thing, so I checked. No trace of it, anywhere. Same goes for the raw message source. When I look at it the subject appears untouched, therefore I assume its a Thunderbird thing. Does anyone know an option to turn this ill behavior off? Thanks a lot in advance! cu Roman

• sending mail in rails from tutorial - outdated?

  I'm trying to use this tutorial (http://www.tutorialspoint.com/ruby-on-rails-2.1/rails-send-emails.htm) to send mail on rails, but nothing seems to happen. I have ActionMailer::Base.delivery_method = :sendmail in my environment.rb. It's possible the tutorial may be out of date for the more recent version of rails? If so can someone tell me where it goes wrong or a link to another tutorial. I see this in the log. It's a little supsicious that the "to" has subject and stuff appended to it, but I don't know where it went wrong.   Dear people, I've created a Java program with which I can retrieve mail from an Exchange mailserver. Problem is: the mail is in EML format and I need the MSG format! Right now I'm retrieving mail through the web access part of Exchange, using the Apache Slide project... is it possible at all to use java to retrieve msg files from an Exchange server? • Framework or design pattern for mailing all users of a webapp

  My app takes care of user registration (with the option to receive email announcements), and can easily handle the actual template-based rendering of email for a given user. JavaMail provides the mail transport layer. But how should I design the application layer between the business objects (e.g. User) and the mail transport? The straightforward approach would be a simple, synchronous loop: iterate through the users, queue the emails, and be done with it. "Queue" might mean sending them straight to the MTA (mail server), or to an in-memory queue to be consumed by another thread. However, I also plan to implement features like throttling the rate of emails, processing bounced emails (NDRs), and maintaining status across application restarts. My intuition is that a good design would decouple this from both the business layer and the mail transport layer as much as possible. I wondered if others had solved this problem before, but after much searching I haven't found any Java libraries which seem to fit this problem. Standalone mail apps such as James or list servers are too large in scope; packages like Spring's MailSender or Commons Email are too small in scope (being basically drop-in replacements for JavaMail). For other languages I haven't found anything appropriate either. I'm curious about how other developers have gone about adding bulk mailing to their applications.

  Hi, I have written some code in my VB.NET application to send an HTML e-mail (in this case, a lost password reminder). When I test the e-mail, it gets eaten by my spam filter. One of the things that it's scoring badly on is because of the following problem: MIME_QP_LONG_LINE RAW: Quoted-printable line longer than 76 chars I've been through the source of the e-mail, and I've broken each line longer than 76 characters into two lines with a CR+LF in between, but that hasn't fixed the problem. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!
