• Restricting crawler activity to certain directories with robots.txt

  I would like to use robots.txt to prevent indexing of some parts of my website. I want search engines to index only the / directory and not search inside my controllers. In my robots.txt, I have this: User-Agent: * Disallow: /compagnies/ Disallow: /floors/ Disallow: /spaces/ Disallow: /buildings/ Disallow: /users/ Disallow: / I put this file in /mysite/public. I tested the file with a robots.txt validator and got no errors. However, Google always returns the result of my site. For testing, I added Disallow: /, but again, Google indexed all pages. floors, spaces, buildings, etc. are not physical directories. Is this a bug? How can I work around it?

• DDD and validation of aggregate root

  Suppose an aggregate root : MailConfiguration (wrapping an AddressPart object). The AddressPart object is a simple immutable value object with some fields like senderAdress, recipentAddress (to make example simple). As being an invariant object, AddressPart should logically wrap its own Validator (by the way of external a kind of AddressValidator for respecting Single Responsibility Principle) I read some articles that claimed an aggregateRoot must validate its 'children'. However, if we follow this principle, one could create an AddressPart with an uncohesive/invalid state. What are your opinion? Should I move the collaborator AddressValidator(used in constructor so in order to validate immediately the cohesion of an AddressPart) from AddressPart and assign it to aggregateRoot (MailConfiguration) ?

• Name attribute is obsolete, what is the correct behavior when dealing with anchors?

  Putting some code through the html5 validator, I get this: Warning: The name attribute on the a element is obsolete. Consider putting an id attribute on the nearest container instead. I find that unclear. Is the "nearest container" for an anchor link the a itself, so that the correct code would be <a id='blah'> instead of <a name='blah'>? Or are empty placeholder <a> tags as a whole deprecated, and anchors can simply point to any element with an id instead?

• Site returning 404 header to google, not sure why

  A Drupal site that works fine for regular users returns a 404 not found error when I try to use the W3C validator on it; it is also not being indexed by google at all (which is the main issue but I suspect there is a connection). It is a https:// site with .htaccess rule to redirect any http:// request to the https://. I had had it running in google webmaster tools and thought it was fine, but it turns out I had not added the https domain. After adding the https domain it's also returning the header as HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2012 19:37:43 GMT Server: Apache Expires: Sun, 19 Nov 1978 05:00:00 GMT Cache-Control: no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0 Robots.txt just has User-agent: * Crawl-delay: 10 # Files Disallow: /cron.php How can I check what the issue is here?

• Using ReportViewer 9 control in VS 2010

  Hi, I am writing an ASP.NET app that uses a SQL Server 2005 with SSRS setup. I want to use the ReportViewer control but I get an error when using ReportViewer 10 because it needs SSRS 2008. How can I use ReportViewer 9 within my application. I've added a reference to the Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll version 9 and removed the reference to version 10. • How do you load and save content from a Silverlight 4 RichTextBox control?

  I've been reviewing the features of the RichTextBox control in Silverlight 4. What I've yet to find is any examples of Loading and Saving content in the RichTextBox. Anyone come across any or can shed some light on it? The control has a BlocksCollection in which I guess one could use the XamlReader to load a bunch of markup assuming that markup has a single top level node of type Block. Then add that block to the Blocks collection. Seems a shame that the RichTextBox bothers to have a "collection" in this case, why not simply a top-level Block item? Never-the-less that still leaves saving the content of a RichTextBox, I have no idea where to begin with that one? I'm sure I must be missing the obvious here but unless loading and saving data in to and from RichTextBox is at least possible if not easy I can't see how we can actually put it to use. Edit Thanks to DaveB's answer I found discussion of something called the DocumentPersister. However no reference to this class can be found in the MSDN documentation nor can I find it in the installed dlls via object browser search. Anyone, anyone at all?

• ASP.NET 4.0 UpdatePanel and UserControl with PlaceHolder

  I don't know if this is ASP.NET 4.0 specific but I don't recall having this problem in previous versions. I have very simple user control called "TestModal" that contains a PlaceHolder control which I use to instantiate a template in. When I put an UpdatePanel inside this UserControl on the page the updatepanel only does full postbacks and not partial postbacks. What gives? • JSF 2.0: use Enum values for selectOneMenu

  I'm using JSF 2.0 and want to fill a selectOneMenu with the values of my Enum. A simple example: // Sample Enum public enum Gender { MALE("Male"), FEMALE("Female"); private final String label; private Gender(String label) { this.label = label; } public String getLabel() { return this.label; } } Unfortunately, i can't use Seam for my current project, which had a nice <s:convertEnum/> Tag that did most of the work. In Seam, to use the values of the Enum, i had to write the following markup (and create a factory that provides the #{genderValues}: <!-- the Seam way --> <h:selectOneMenu id="persongender" value="#{person.gender}"> <s:selectItems var="_gender" value="#{genderValues}"" label="#{_gender.label}"/> <s:convertEnum/> </h:selectOneMenu> The result is that i don't have to declare the Enum values explicitely anymore inside the markup. I know that this is not very easy in JSF <2.0, but is there any new in JSF2 to help with this issue? Or does Weld help here somehow? If there is nothing new in JSF2, what's the easiest way to do it in JSF 1.2? Or can i even integrate the Seam JSF tag and the corresponding classes of Seam to get the same feature in a JavaEE6-App (without the Seam container)?

• How can I access the group of a linq group-by query from a nested repeater control?

  I'm using a linq group by query (with two grouping parameters) and would like to use the resulting data in a nested repeater. var dateGroups = from row in data.AsEnumerable() group row by new { StartDate = row["StartDate"], EndDate = row["EndDate"] }; "data" is a DataTable from an SqlDataAdapter-filled DataSet. "dateGroups" is used in the parent repeater, and I can access the group keys using Eval("key.StartDate") and Eval("key.EndDate"). Since dateGroups actually contains all the data rows grouped neatly by Start/End date, I'd like to access those rows to display the data in a child repeater. To what would I set the child repeater's DataSource? I have tried every expression in markup I could think of; I think the problem is that I'm trying to access an anonymous member (and I don't know how.) In case it doesn't turn out to be obvious, what would be the expression to access the elements in each iteration of the child repeater? Is there an expression that would let me set the DataSource in the markup, or will it have to be in the codebehind on some event in the parent repeater?

• MSBuild fails, but building inside Visual Studio works fine

  C#, .NET 2.0 I have an ASP.NET website in a solution, with 2 other projects (used as library references). When I build (debug or release) in Visual Studio, everything works fine. However, building with MSBuild fails. This build had been working (it's actually invoked via a nAnt task). The only thing that has changed is that I have a new user control whose Type I am referencing in my code behind. The offending code is in my ASPX code behind. MessageAlert is the UserControl: MessageAlert userControl = this.LoadControl("~/UserControls/MessageAlert.ascx") as MessageAlert; userControl.UserMessage = message; this.UserMessages.Controls.Add(userControl); In order to get Visual Studio to recognize the type 'MessageAlert' I had to: 1) Set the ClassName="MessageAlert" in the @Control markup at the top of the user control (because using the auto-generated UserControls_MessageAlert wasn't working either) 2) Register the user control in the markup of my ASPX, using an @Register 3) Add a "using ASP" to the top of my code behind After those steps, I could successfully reference the MessageAlert type in my codebehind from visual studio. But from MSBuild I get "The type or namespace name 'MessageAlert' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " The MSBuild execution is very simple - it points the the very same solution file and sets the configuration property to release. It seems, based on the # of steps I had to go through to get Type references to MessageAlert in Visual Studio, that there is something missing in the MSBuild process. But what? Doesn't Visual Studio in fact invoke MSBuild behind the scenes? Is there a better way to reference a UserControl type in the code behind of an ASPX? EDIT: To clarify, the MessageAlert user control is not in the other referenced assemblies/projects. I mentioned them because, together with the website, the compose the Solution file, which is the same sln file being built by MS Build.

  I have a text blob field in a MySQL column that contains HTML. I have to change some of the markup, so I figured I'll do it in a ruby script. Ruby is irrelevant here, but it would be nice to see an answer with it. The markup looks like the following: <h5>foo</h5> <table> <tbody> </tbody> </table> <h5>bar</h5> <table> <tbody> </tbody> </table> <h5>meow</h5> <table> <tbody> </tbody> </table> I need to change just the first <h5>foo</h5> block of each text to <h2>something_else</h2> while leaving the rest of the string alone. Can't seem to get the proper PCRE regex, using Ruby.

• How can I render a list of objects using DisplayFor but from the controller in ASP.NET MVC?

  Here's the scenaio, I have an Employee object and a Company object which has a list of employees. I have Company.aspx which inherits from ViewPage<Company>. In Company.aspx I call Html.DisplayFor(m => m.Employees). I have an Employee.ascx partial view which inherits from ViewUserControl<Employee in my DisplayTemplates folder. Everything works fine and Company.aspx renders the Employee.ascx partial for each employee. Now I have two additional methods on my controller called GetEmployees and GetEmployee(Id). In the GetEmployee(Id) action I want to return the markup to display this one employee, and in GetEmployees() I want to render the markup to display all the employees (these two action methods will be called via AJAX). In the GetEmployee action I call return PartialView("DisplayTemplates\Employee", employee) This works, although I'd prefer something like return PartialViewFor(employee) which would determine the view name by convention. Anwyay, my question is how should I implement the GetEmployees() action? I don't want to create any more views, because frankly, I don't see why I should have to. I've tried the following which fails miserably :) return Content(New HtmlHelper<IList<Of DebtDto>>(null, null).DisplayFor(m => debts)); However if I could create an instance of an HtmlHelper object in my controller, I suppose I could get it to work, but it feels wrong. Any ideas? Have i missed something obvious?

• ASP.NET MVC solution to a forms application?

  Hello, We're building a survey system and utilising ASP.NET MVC and wondered if anyone can offer suggestions on the architecture. Here's the problem we're trying to solve. Essentially an agency sends out several surveys every year. They're very structured and not like SurveyMonkey style of surveys - they're actually applications of feedback. Much like a Visa Application there are lots of things they need to do and sometimes it takes them 2-3 weeks to fill it out. They can upload files (proofs of purchase etc - PDF/JPG) and also multiple "items". Eg. Say for instance they've worked for McDonalds, there could be 20 different franchises, they build a list of locations they've worked. 3 weeks later there could be another 3 new locations and 2 may have closed down. So we need to ensure the forms are able to handle those situations. The forms themselves (markup and data) change every year - I should mention that this for a taxation/finance/budget system. We were thinking of using MVC, using Xml to store the data (temporarily), XSD to validate the data, XSL to transform the data to presentable markup (for them to fill out) and then once they "Submit" an application it gets stored into the DB in relevant areas. When the user starts the application process, they can save the progress so far (we validate whatever they entred and ignore any they havent), save it as an Xml blob and store in the DB. When they're finally ready to submit it, then we do a full validation and upload the files and store them securely (it has their business proofs and accounting statements) and then run some workflows. What I'm really concerned about is how to manage changing forms versions (a year later). How are form/application systems written these days? We have 2 months to pull this off and about 30 forms to deliver. So 30xXML, 30xXSD, 30xXSL.

• cannot get thickbox to open / tb_show function ignored

  I have two links that should open up thickbox's in iframes but only one works (the one with the id of product_photo_zoom_url2). I have the following jquery code that works when this code... All that happens when the first zoom image is clicked is the page goes to the top so it seems that the .click bind is being ignored? How do I get this to work? onload="vZoom.add(this, '/v/vspfiles/photos/70367301P-2.jpg');" / is removed from the markup. The above code loads a picture zoom function. • Automatic multi-page multi-column flowing text with QtWebkit (HTML/CSS/JS -> PDF)

  I have some HTML documents that are converted to PDF, using software that renders using QtWebkit (not sure which version). Currently, the documents have specific tags to split into columns and pages - so whenever the wording changes, it is a manual time-consuming process to move these tags so that the columns and pages fit. Can anyone provide a way to have text auto-wrapped into the next column/page (as appropriate) when it reaches the bottom of the current container? Any HTML, CSS or JS supported by QtWebkit is ok (assuming it works in the PDF converter). (I have tested the webkit-column-* in CSS3 and it appears QtWebkit does not support this.) To make things more exciting, it also needs to: - put a header at the top of each page, with page X of Y numbering; - if an odd number of pages, add a blank page at the end (with no header); - have the ability to say "don't break inside this block" or "don't break after this header" I have put some quick example initial markup and target markup to help explain what I'm trying to do. (The actual documents are far more complicated than that, but I need a simple proof-of-concept before I attack the real ones.) Any suggestions? Update: I've got a partially working solution using Aaron's "filling up" suggestion - I'll post more details in a bit.

  I'm transforming XML to an HTML document. In this document I want to embed XML markup for a node that was just transformed (the HTML document is a technical spec). For example, if my XML was this: <transform-me> <node id="1"> <stuff type="floatsam"> <details>Various bits</details> </stuff> </node> </transform-me> I'd want my XSLT output to look something like this: <h1>Node 1</h1> <h2>Stuff (floatsam)</h2> Various bits <h2>The XML</h2> &lt;stuff type=&quot;floatsam&quot;&gt; &lt;details&gt;Various bits&lt;/details&gt; &lt;/stuff&gt; I'm hoping there is an XSLT function that I can call in my <stuff> template to which I can pass the current node (.) and get back escaped XML markup for <stuff> and all its descendants. • ASP.Net ListBox selections not working in Panel?

  Hi everyone, I'm having trouble processing a listbox after selecting some items from it. In my markup, the listbox is contained within an asp:panel and is populated during page load in the codebehind. That part works fine. It's when I select various items and submit that I have trouble. My handler loops through the listbox items but doesn't see any as being selected. I'm not sure why. Here's the markup: <asp:Panel ID="panEdit" runat="server" Height="180px" Width="400px" CssClass="ModalWindow"> <table width="100%"> <asp:label runat = "server">Choose your items</asp:label> <tr> <td> <asp:ListBox ID="lstFundList" runat="server" SelectionMode="Multiple" OnLoad="lstFundList_LoadData"> </asp:ListBox> </td> </tr> </table> <asp:Button ID="btnUpdate" runat="server" Text="Update" OnClick="btnUpdate_OnClick"/> <asp:Button ID="btnCancel" runat="server" Text="Cancel" OnClientClick="$find('ModalPopupExtender1').hide(); return false;" /> </asp:Panel> In my btnUpdate_OnClick handler I can't see any listbox items that are marked as selected. • What options exist to get text/ list items to appear in columns?

  I have a bunch of HTML markup coming from an external source, and it is mainly h3 elements and ul elements. I want to have the content flow in 3 columns. I know there is something coming in CSS3, but what options do I have to get this content to flow nicely into the 3 columns at the time being? I'm not that concerned about IE6 (as long as it degrades gracefully). Am I stuck using jQuery to parse the markup and chop it up into 3 divs which float? • How to use a VB usercontrol on a C# page?

  Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I've created a usercontrol in VB that handles paging more efficiently than the DataPager (at least for very large datasets). I'd like to use it in a C# project, but I've been having trouble getting it to work. I've tried simply adding PagingControl.ascx to the C# project, but when I do that the markup and VB code behind don't seem to see each other. --Is this a namespace issue? I've tried adding the PagingControl.ascx to its own VB project, then adding that project to the C# project's solution, as well as a reference. --That almost works. I can register the PagingControl usercontrol in the markup. I can access the usercontrol's properties in the code behind, but any property that involves the UI of the usercontrol fails. Its seems as if the usercontrol's form hasn't had a chance to load by the time the C# page's Page_Load event handler fires. --Maybe this is an "order of operations" problem? At what point in the C# page's lifetime should a usercontrol's form be loaded? If anyone has any ideas or insight, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
