• vhost.conf with plesk makes infinite loop

  So I'm trying to make rewrite rules for my just migrated site and now we're using PLESK (unfortunately in my opinion). So, in order to make those rewrites I'm using the vhost.conf file in mydomain/conf folderm and I execute: /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -u --vhost-name=mydomain.org so that includes my file into the httpd configuration. However, no matter what I write in my vhost.conf file, it will make my site go in an infinite loop whenever I try to load an URL that's not just the domain. Example: mydomain.org Works just fine. mydomain.org/event/nameofevent Will try endlessly to load and eventually my browser will detect that infinite loop. I though I was writing something incorrectly in my vhost.conf file but I even tried it with the file empty (not a single line). It will still try to load endlessly. Anybody can hint me if I'm skipping a step before (like any activation that should be done beorehand or something). Thanks in advance.

  I'm redoing my firewall configuration with more restrictive policies and I would like to determine the provenance (and/or destination) of some outgoing connections. I have an issue because they come from svchost.exe and go to web content/application delivery providers - or similar: 5 IP in range: 82.96.58.0 - 82.96.58.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 3 IP in range: 93.150.110.0 - 93.158.111.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 2 IP in range: 87.248.194.0 - 87.248.223.255 --> LLNW Europe 2 llnw.net 205.234.175.175 --> CacheNetworks, Inc. cachefly.net 188.121.36.239 --> Go Daddy Netherlands B.V. secureserver.net So is it possible to know which service does a particular connection? • The downsides of using nginx as a primary web server?

  Hello. I've seen millions of websites using nginx as a proxifying webserver working together with Apache. But I've seen very few servers running nginx only as their default webserver. What are the main downsides of such config? I can see some: Inability to use per-directory config files like .htaccess so every configuration change should be done to main server config file and requires server reload. But pecl htscanner can compensate them for php settings Unavailability of mod_php for nginx, which can be compensated by php-fpm for example. What are others? Why don't people just drop Apache and move to nginx or any other lightweight solution? May be, there are some special reasons?

• Why does waking a PC up with a timer act differently than with the power button?

  I have a Windows 7 machine set up as a server. It has no monitor and is only accessed through remote desktop. I set up two scheduled tasks, one to put the computer to sleep at night and another to wake it up in the morning. When it's woken up from sleep via a timer, it stays awake for only a couple minutes before going back to sleep. When woken up by pushing the power button, however, it stays awake all the way until the sleep timer. Why does my PC behave differently in these two scenarios? I have set the PC not to prompt for a user's password on wake, since I worried that the login screen might follow different power rules. I tried SmartPower Configuration but had the same problems. I can provide more details if questions are asked in the comments, but I'm not sure what's relevant.

• Disabling at application level a nic (network interface) on Windows

  How can I disable at application level a network interface? The main question is this: If I disable the nic trough wmic (win7) or devcon (XP), the "plug and play" of a wired nic doesn't work any more. For example, if the user put the cable on a disabled nic, the OS doesn't know about it. So I need to persist the enable condition but disabling the networking like a disable nic. There's some API, network configuration (routing, changing ip, changing gateway, any), .NET Framework resource (Only NetFramework 2.0) or do you can think in any workaround to do this? Suggest and ideas also will be treated as a solution. Thanks and kind regards.

• File access with hostname or ip only - no domain?

  It seems likely that this is an obvious question, but I'm having trouble tracking down any useful information. Normally when accessing files in a particular directory on a server, I'm able to create a virtual host, assign a domain, root directory location, etc -- however am in a situation where I have server space and need to access files with only a hostname. Is this possible? For example, let's say the hostname is 123hostname.com, and the file I want access to is in /home/sub-directory/filename.php. How do I get at it via a browser? I've tried: http://123hostname.com/home/sub-directory/filename.php ...and some other variations on that theme (that I can't post because new users are restricted to one link in messages). But generally stuck. Any help -- even if it's just to let me know that this isn't possible without some additional configuration -- would be great. Thank you!

• How do I enable mutual SSL in IIS7 with a self-signed certificate?

  I've created a self-signed certificate in IIS7. Then I exported this certificate to a .pfx and then installed it on the client machine's IE browser. Then I set "Require Client Certificate" on the server's IIS configuration. When I try to visit the site with IE, a dialog box comes up for me to choose a certificate, however, there are no certs in that dialog box. When I click "OK" without choosing any certs, I get a 403 forbidden error. How can I make this work? Appreciate the help in advance.

• How can we control the device driver load order in Windows XP ?

  We are trying to install both an HP scanner and a Kodak scanner on an XP machine and the problem is that that HP's scanner driver always places itself into the first and default scanner device position. We are using an automation software on that machine which must use the Kodak scanner as the default scanner. The HP flatbed isn't needed to be the default scanner on that machine. It will always be used manually and through its own software. Our developers did some research 2 years ago couldn't find a solution. Nowadays we are preparing to expand our user base and this problem did surface again on machines with the same configuration. I did a more aggresive search pn the net and found some tips like this one : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115486 I couldn't realize how to suit this solution to my scenario. Could someone please point me to the right direction ?

• Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed.   going to try my best to explain: our exchange 2003 was migrated to exchange 2007 (was not here for the migration). Looking in active directory sites and services - services - Microsoft exchange - company - address list container - recipient update services i have two recipient update services 1) recipient update service (enterprise configuration) 2) recipient update service (my-domain) my guess is one of these is left from the old exchange 2003. (im guessing this because the migration was not done properly, the exchange server was never actually uninstall, it was just taken offline, and then later disposed of). could having two of these cause me issues, and if so, how do i know which one i could get rid of ? Im asking because i honestly have no idea. it might even be nothing. thanks

• How do you manage Labeled and All-Mail unread mails in Thunderbird with a GMail IMAP accounnt?

  I use Thunderbird with gmail via imap and do so with multiple accounts. On the gmail side I have filters that will automatically assign labels to incoming mail and archive it moving it out of the inbox. On the Thunderbird side it will see the new mail appear in the corresponding folder and the all mail folder -- that's fine but my problem is that they're both marked as unread. Since I have many accounts I use the unread mail view in Thunderbird's folder panel and what I see is both folders highlighted as unread. When I read the message in one folder the other only get marked as read I click on it and Thunderbird does another imap transaction. Is there a configuration that will recognize the same mail in two different folders automatically?

• ISA - Why do i suddenly need to specify settings on the client machines?

  Have been pulling my hair out over this one for hours, and wondering if someone can help. I have a server with two network interfaces that was running isa 2004 and humming until i installed sbs service pack + isa 2004 service pack 3. Grrrrrrrrrr I can get the client machines to connect to the internet but only by installing the ISA Client on each machine or setting proxy settings etc in the internet settings. Ideally i want the client machines to just work with no configuration or proxy server settings as they were before. Where do i start, and what other information do you need from me if any to find out what im doing wrong Thanks!

  I have a BSOD on windows 7 with SSD during boot after improper shutdown (while windows animation logo is moving). The computer restart imediatly after BSOD, and windows proposes to launch startup repair (if i do it, it takes +-5min and fixes the problem : computer starts normally). However, after any new improper shutdown, i got the same problem. Remarks: If i unplug, re-plug the SSD whyle system is shutdown, i have the same problem. If i reproduce the situation with old HDD, i havn't the problem Previously, i had a different problem: BSOD when waking up after sleep, which was fixed by installing drivers (ethernet, usb, graphic card) I have made ram chech and ssd check and found no problems Starting with safe mode after improper shutdown causes a BSOD at loading of classpnp.sys Configuration: System: HP compaq 8510p SSD: OCZ vertex-2 2.5 Boot options: SATA native mode - Enable, HDD transalation mode - LBA-assisted

• What packages are neccessary to have sound output from java applets?

  I've got a very minimalistic setup of ubuntu precise, created using debootstrap. So please don't assume that any packages are installed just because they usually are. On that system, I'd like to play some sounds from a java applet. However, this always fails with the following error message: javax.sound.midi.MidiUnavailableException: Can not open line at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1132) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1036) ... Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: No line matching interface SourceDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 44100.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, 4 bytes/frame, little-endian is supported. at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getLine(AudioSystem.java:476) at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getSourceDataLine(AudioSystem.java:604) at com.sun.media.sound.SoftSynthesizer.open(SoftSynthesizer.java:1066) ... 35 more As the messages mention a soft synthesizer, and pcm lines, I expect that the lack of some midi daemon is not the issue here. • Send one invalid email response to sender

  I discovered that my postfix/dovecot configuration isn't rejecting emails. If a person sends an email to an invalid email-address, it just drops it. I am fine with this behavior since I think it discourages spammers from mining emails (I have had some success). Recently a person I did not want to talk to emailed an address I cut off and didn't receive a response back. It would have saved me some problems if they knew to call me instead of sending 50+ emails. How would I configure Dovecot/postfix to send a message back to a sender of an email address and then limit this 1 per domain or unique email.   I am currently configuring RAID 10 (first time doing RAID ever) for a server at work. In the Configuration Utility. I am given the option of either span 2 or span 4. Having never done this before, I was curious if someone could tell me the pros and cons of for each span? Thanks The server is a Poweredge r620 with a PERC H710 mini (Security Capable) RAID controller. I have 8 600GB hard drives. I am creating this server as a network storage drive. I have SQL server historian database whose 1TB storage filled up and after 5 years of logging data.

• Synergy client drops and reconnects at UAC dialog

  I've been using Synergy for a while at work to connect my XP machine (the host) to my Win 7 laptop (the client). I previously was having issues with using Synergy and the UAC prompt, as described in this question, and have had no issues since, until recently. I upgraded to Synergy 1.4.10 and now am seeing odd behavior whenever a UAC prompt appears on my laptop. When the UAC prompt appears on my laptop, Synergy momentarily drops its connection to my laptop, causing my mouse and keyboard focus to revert to my host machine (the XP machine). After about a second or so, though, the connection gets re-established and I am able to type and use the mouse buttons in the UAC prompt. Once the prompt clears, the connection drops again for a second, and then gets re-established again. Is this something to do with configuration or perhaps should I just chalk it up to a change in behavior in version 1.4.10?

  I just bought this notebook and I've already installed in a new partition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 6gb of swap memory. My mouse is blocked, the UI is blocked, ALT+F1 to kill something or to restart is blocked, I can't really do anything... I've also tried and it freezes with: Ubuntu 3D Ubuntu 2D Gnome Shell and it freezes both with low and high load. I can only press on power button (physically) and restart my laptop (and this is not the correct way to do things). I'm using this laptop for work, so I need a stable OS without this freeze. Someone knows how to solve this problem? UPDATE: /var/log/messages is empty /var/log/kernel.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220182/ /var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220186/ I just installed propetary driver from ATI, it crash anyway. This morning I started laptop, I enabled wireless, opened dropbox and chrome - freeze. When it freeze I cannot: Do ctrl+alt+f1 to get console access AltF2 + r to reload session Alt+Print + RESUB to restart I totally freezed.

• apt-get doesnt download files from NFS location

  I have switched to unix from last 3 months and trying to understand install process and in particular apt-get. I am able to successfully install and download the packages when I configure my repository on http location in /etc/apt/sources.list file. e.g. deb http://web.myspqce.com/u/eng/rose/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free This command will download(/var/cache/apt/archive) and install the package when i use apt-get install When I change the source location to file instead of http(nfs mount point), the package is getting installed but NOT getting downloaded in /var/cache/apt/archive. deb file:/deb_repository/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free Please let me know if there is any configuration or settings that i have to make to let apt-get to both download and install package when i use (nfs)file:/ instead of http:/ in sources.list. To achieve this, I can use apt-get --downlaod-only and then use apt-get install for both download and install in two separate calls, but I want to know why package is not getting downloaded with apt-get install but only getting installed when used with file:/ in sources.list

  I have SQL2008 installed on my Win2008 server, and its been working fine - I have sites running using SQL databases etc.. I thought I would install SQL2008 SP1, but after install I cannot connect to SQL via Management Studio, and in configuration manager I cannot start SQL? • Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.
