• How do you manage Labeled and All-Mail unread mails in Thunderbird with a GMail IMAP accounnt?

  I use Thunderbird with gmail via imap and do so with multiple accounts. On the gmail side I have filters that will automatically assign labels to incoming mail and archive it moving it out of the inbox. On the Thunderbird side it will see the new mail appear in the corresponding folder and the all mail folder -- that's fine but my problem is that they're both marked as unread. Since I have many accounts I use the unread mail view in Thunderbird's folder panel and what I see is both folders highlighted as unread. When I read the message in one folder the other only get marked as read I click on it and Thunderbird does another imap transaction. Is there a configuration that will recognize the same mail in two different folders automatically?

• Convert RAID-0 to RAID-1 on HP ML350G6 with P410i zero memory

  I have an HP ML350 G6 with a P410i zero memory RAID controller. As far as I can understand that means I can't expand a current single drive "RAID-0" configuration to a RAID-1 using the HP Offline ACU without installing memory and BBWC. Is that correct? What makes me think about this is the fact that expanding RAID-0 to RAID-1 should be pretty similar to replacing a failed drive in an already existing RAID-1? So then why can't I expand without memory and BBWC? Is my best option otherwise to (i) use Ghost to capture the disk, create a new RAID-1 with the existing drive and a new one or (ii) buy memory+BBWC and do it online? Thanks

• Send Ctrl+Alt+Del over VNC with Vista and UAC off?

  I'm trying to set up a machine here with Ultra VNC on Vista with UAC off. Problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the Vista machine and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Any workaround or solution?

• Apache 2.4.2 with PHP 5.4.4 crashes as soon as phpinfo() script is opened

  As soon as i open a phpinfo() script called version.php apache stops working. Here is the error.log file. My configuration (my local development machine): Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 with latest updates Apache 2.4.2 win32 from Apache Lounge PHP 5.4.4 VC9 x86 TS from PHP For Windows php5apache2_4.dll (PHP 5.4.4) taken from Apache Lounge php5apache2_4.dll-php-5.4-win32.zip PATH environment variable is PATH=C:\WAMP\Apache\bin;C:\WAMP\PHP and installation folders (unzipping) are: C:/WAMP/Apache C:/WAMP/PHP Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86/x64 installed and updated. • Remote Desktop Services In A Virtual VMWare Environment

  I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

• Silent and scripted install of CPAN and Perl modules?

  I need to install CPAN and some Perl modules automatically in a Scientific Linux (RHEL) installation script. Unfortunately the specific modules I want (at least one of them) cannot be found as RPM:s as far as I've seen. So I need to install CPAN, configure it automatically (or with a config file) and then install the wanted modules (including dependencies) automatically as well. This doesn't seem like a very unusual requirement, but I haven't seen any really good documentation on this. The problem is that whenever CPAN is launched for the first time an interactive configuration runs. Can this be skipped somehow? And how do I launch module installations directly from the command line?

  I'm redoing my firewall configuration with more restrictive policies and I would like to determine the provenance (and/or destination) of some outgoing connections. I have an issue because they come from svchost.exe and go to web content/application delivery providers - or similar: 5 IP in range: 82.96.58.0 - 82.96.58.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 3 IP in range: 93.150.110.0 - 93.158.111.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 2 IP in range: 87.248.194.0 - 87.248.223.255 --> LLNW Europe 2 llnw.net 205.234.175.175 --> CacheNetworks, Inc. cachefly.net 188.121.36.239 --> Go Daddy Netherlands B.V. secureserver.net So is it possible to know which service does a particular connection? • Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. • nginx is not using gzip to talk to backend servers

  Our web servers are running IIS 7 and are configured to compress dynamic and static content. When I hit these servers directly, gzip compression works. I recently placed nginx in front of them, and gzip compression has stopped. I was able to work around this by explicitly enabling gzip compression on nginx itself, but that seems a little inefficient considering I have half a dozen backends and only one active nginx box. It appears that nginx is stripping out the Accept-Encoding header. Does anyone have any advice for how to 'correct' this behavior? • why is iometer performance slower after first run?

  I'm doing some benchmarking with IOMeter, and I'm seeing a consistent and susbtantial drop-off in performance after running the first test. These drop-offs are about the same on the three systems I've tested on, which makes me think it's a configuration setting, or just a fact of life about using IOMeter. For example, one system (local RAID 10) went from 388 I/Os per second the first run, to about 211 I/Os per second on every run after that. Everything else about the test was identical, and I also bounced the machine in between runs. So, is this expected behavior, or am I missing something?

  Both servers in a 2 server cluster are reporting event 4412 20,000 times per day. If I sit in the conflictAndDetected folder I can observe files appearing and disappearing. Users report that their files saved by peers at the same location are overriding each other. The configuration began with a single server, then DFS-R was set up using the 2008 R2 wizard that set up the share on the second server. DFSN was set up independently. Windows users have drives mapped using domain based namespace (\domain.com\share). Mac users are pointed directly to the new server share created by DFS-R. It is PC users indicating most of the lost files, but there has been 2 reports by Mac users about files reverting.

  How can I disable at application level a network interface? The main question is this: If I disable the nic trough wmic (win7) or devcon (XP), the "plug and play" of a wired nic doesn't work any more. For example, if the user put the cable on a disabled nic, the OS doesn't know about it. So I need to persist the enable condition but disabling the networking like a disable nic. There's some API, network configuration (routing, changing ip, changing gateway, any), .NET Framework resource (Only NetFramework 2.0) or do you can think in any workaround to do this? • Accept incoming L2TP connections on Windows 7

  Windows 2003 can be configured as a VPN server that uses L2TP with a preshared key. Windows 7 can be configured to accept incoming VPN connections, presumably using PPTP. Is there a way to configure Windows 7 to accept incoming L2TP connections? The configuration settings for incoming connections is extremely sparse; I don't see any place to enter a preshared key or specify the protocol to use. Perhaps it is beyond the capabilities of Win 7, but I hold out hope that I'm overlooking some Group Policy settings or registry edits that allow it.

  basically i want to ask question about configurable addressing scheme for LAN interface hardware. i have read about it from a book, some main points are given by a configurable addressing scheme provides a mechanism that a customer can use to set a physical address.The mechanism can be manual (the switches that must be set when the interface is first installed).or an electronic memory such as an EPROM that can be downloded from the computer(what does this means). Most hardware needs to be configured only once- configuration is usually done when the hardware is first installed. Question:Suppose a network administrator configures the LAN interface hardware (assigns the address) when he installs it. Now later on if he needs to change the physical address of the device can he change it? Or in this addressing scheme the hardware can only be configured once and we can not reconfigure it later on.

• Synergy client drops and reconnects at UAC dialog

  I've been using Synergy for a while at work to connect my XP machine (the host) to my Win 7 laptop (the client). I previously was having issues with using Synergy and the UAC prompt, as described in this question, and have had no issues since, until recently. I upgraded to Synergy 1.4.10 and now am seeing odd behavior whenever a UAC prompt appears on my laptop. When the UAC prompt appears on my laptop, Synergy momentarily drops its connection to my laptop, causing my mouse and keyboard focus to revert to my host machine (the XP machine). After about a second or so, though, the connection gets re-established and I am able to type and use the mouse buttons in the UAC prompt. Once the prompt clears, the connection drops again for a second, and then gets re-established again. Is this something to do with configuration or perhaps should I just chalk it up to a change in behavior in version 1.4.10?

  I have a BSOD on windows 7 with SSD during boot after improper shutdown (while windows animation logo is moving). The computer restart imediatly after BSOD, and windows proposes to launch startup repair (if i do it, it takes +-5min and fixes the problem : computer starts normally). However, after any new improper shutdown, i got the same problem. Remarks: If i unplug, re-plug the SSD whyle system is shutdown, i have the same problem. If i reproduce the situation with old HDD, i havn't the problem Previously, i had a different problem: BSOD when waking up after sleep, which was fixed by installing drivers (ethernet, usb, graphic card) I have made ram chech and ssd check and found no problems Starting with safe mode after improper shutdown causes a BSOD at loading of classpnp.sys Configuration: System: HP compaq 8510p SSD: OCZ vertex-2 2.5 Boot options: SATA native mode - Enable, HDD transalation mode - LBA-assisted

• Monitor not detected after booting without monitor attached (12.04)

  I had a stable 12.04 machine running perfectly. The machine was booted without the monitor connected - since then the system always boots to low graphics mode. Onboard graphics (from lspci): VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Monitor: AOC e2450Swh Display widget shows monitor as laptop(!?) and system details shows graphics as Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) X-server log appears to show correct monitor detected. When I boot from a live CD I get full 3d graphics I've tried the monitor on a different machine - all OK. I've tried a different monitor on this machine - same problem. Between having a working system and a broken one there have been no updates and I have made no configuration changes... EDIT: I have come to the conclusion that the problem is caused by a known issue with lightDM hanging on battery check. I've managed to get 3D graphic working by switching to using GDM - not a solution but acceptable workaround. I would still like to know what is causing the problem and how I managed to get my system into this state!

• Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

• MySQL port 3306 blocked in csf yet can still telnet to port 3306 from external host

  We have a Centos 6 VPS that was recently migrated to a new machine within the same web hosting company. It's running WHM/cPanel and has csf/lfd installed. csf is set up with mostly vanilla config. I'm no iptables expert, csf has not let me down before. If a port isn't in the TCP_IN list, it should be blocked on the firewall by iptables. My problem is that I can telnet to port 3306 from an external host, yet I think iptables ought to be blocking 3306 because of csf's rules. We are now failing a security check because of this open port. (this output is obfuscated to protect the innocent: www.ourhost.com is the host with the firewall problem) [root@nickfenwick log]# telnet www.ourhost.com 3306 Trying 158.255.45.107... Connected to www.ourhost.com. Escape character is '^]'. HHost 'nickfenwick.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL serverConnection closed by foreign host. So the connection is established, and MySQL refuses the connection due to its configuration. I need the network connection to be refused at the firewall level, before it reaches MySQL. Using WHM's csf web UI I can see 'Firewall Configuration' includes a fairly sensible TCP_IN line: TCP_IN: 20,21,22,25,53,80,110,143,222,443,465,587,993,995,2077,2078,2082,2083,2086,2087,2095,2096,8080 (lets ignore that I could trim that a little for now, my concern is that 3306 is not listed in that list) When csf is restarted it logs the usual slew of output as it sets up iptables rules, for example what looks like it blocking all traffic and then allowing specific ports like SSH on 22: [cut] DROP all opt -- in * out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 [cut] ACCEPT tcp opt -- in !lo out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:22 [cut] I can see that iptables is running, service iptables status returns a long list of firewall rules. Here is my Chain INPUT section from service iptables status, hopefully that's enough to show how the firewall is configured. • ASP.NET, PostgreSQL, Mono, Ubuntu, Apache: Good idea?

  I am a long-time Microsoft .NET developer. ASP.NET/MSSQL/IIS has been my bread & butter over the past 6 years. Now, I'm getting fond of the "lightweightness" of Ubuntu 10.xx server. I'm also loving SSH-ing it from my Windows 7 PC and installing apps using the awesome "apt-get" command. I've also been using HeidiSQL with MySQL now and loving it. It feels like Management Studio. However, i've read that PostgreSQL "may" be better than MySQL, and I did experience some MySQL overloads in my Moodle box (but this can be just a poor tweaking in my part). My question is, would it be a good idea to run this configuration? ASP.NET 4.0 PostgreSQL (the latest one I can apt-get!) Ubuntu 10.10 with Mono running on Apache Also, I assume I would be using Npgsql for Mono as my connector from ASP.NET to PostgreSQL?

• How to recover from terminal custom setup

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 and I added "Terminal" to the launcher bar, the default size of the terminal is a bit small, after some googling here is how I made the disaster change: At HUD menu, type "preference" and I see the option of Edit > preference, this is as I expected After I clicked the option, I forget the exact steps, but somehow I came to some configuration panel and there is a checkbox for terminal "custom" and I checked it now an input box is enabled and I type gnome-terminal --geometry 160x50 Now the problem comes, whenever I click the terminal button at the launcher bar, new terminal windows pops up endlessly from everywhere, I cannot do anything any more except logout or shutdown. The weird thing is, after I come back, I cannot get that Edit > preference any more when I type "preference" in HUD, I tried "Edit", "preference". To be clear, I still can use the computer as long as I do not click that terminal button, but I really want to use terminal to run commands. Help is appreciated greatly! Update - OK, figured out. Go to /home/jibin/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default and open that xml file, I can see the options I changed at the GUI, remove them and terminal runs good. The preference HUD is back also, it is actually Profile Preference and it is only available when terminal is open. Continue my ubuntu-ing...
