• Python multithreading not working on VPS server

  I am running an python multithreaded application with multiple processes which scrapes data from some websites. While running on my localhost It works great, but on the vps server I am using( Centos 5.8, 2.6 GHZ with 4 cores) performs very slow. From the nethogs command I get the network usage too low. I get around 8KBps with 15 threads. On other hand, in my PC I get the usage around 100-120KBPS. I have read about the Python GIL and threading limitations. It seems GIL never releases the lock on the VPS though it should while doing I/0 Is there any configuration in the VPS that I need to change for the threading to work properly?

I have XAMPP installed and when I run 'sudo pecl install imagick', I get this error: checking ImageMagick MagickWand API configuration program... configure: error: not found. • VirtualBox won't use any kind of hardware acceleration

  I see an problem with VirtualBox hardware acceleration functionality... My system configuration: MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) (BIOS: 2.70) Intel Core i5-2400 Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.10 Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.10 I can select the individual acceleration options such as PAE/NX, VT-x/VMD-V or Nested Paging within VM-Settings but if I start the VM the accelerations will be disabled as of the tooltip from CPU (right next to shared folders). Each acceleration is "Disabled". Does this sounds familar to anybody? How can I solve this?

• esxi 5.1 - copy paste host config doesn't work?

  I followed these instructions for esxi 5.1 to enable copy paste from the host config. (search for "To enable this option for all the virtual machines in the ESX/ESXi host:") http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026437 But copy and paste doesn't work for new VMs or existing VMs. Did I do something wrong somewhere? I've rebooted VMs and even rebooted host. I can confirm that if I do a per VM configuration, it works. Just not a central host config. Here is a screenshot of my /etc/vmware/config file

• Designing web-based plugin systems correctly so they don't waste as many resources?

  Many CMS systems which rely on third parties for much of their code often build "plugin" or "hooks" systems to make it easy for developers to modify the codebase's actions without editing the core files. This usually means an Observer or Event design pattern. However, when you look at systems like wordpress you see that on every page they load some kind of bootstrap file from each of the plugin's folders to see if that plugin will need to run that request. Its this poor design that causes systems like wordpress to spend many extra MB's of memory loading and parsing unneeded items each page. Are there alternative ways to do this? I'm looking for ideas in building my own. For example, Is there a way to load all this once and then cache the results so that your system knows how to lazy-load plugins? In other words, the system loads a configuration file that specifies all the events that plugin wishes to tie into and then saves it for future requests? If that also performs poorly, then perhaps there is a special file-structure that could be used to make educated guesses about when certain plugins are unneeded to fullfil the request. Any ideas? • HP Smart Array; Is it possible to convert Raid1 to Raid0 by dropping a failed drive?

  I have a server that was running two 60GB drives as a logical RAID1. At some point the second drive was physically removed and the logical drive has been in "Interim Recovery Mode" for several months now. There's no need for the redundancy of RAID1 on this machine, and I have no intention of replacing the missing drive. If possible I would like to convert the current RAID1 to a single-drive RAID0 by simply dropping the failed drive from the current configuration. I'm only interested in doing this if it can be done in-place. Otherwise I'm perfectly content to leave it in "Interim Recovery Mode" indefinitely.

• Shared mailbox - users cannot create or view subfolders

  I've setup a shared mailbox on our Exchange 2010/SBS2011 server. I've added some users as Full permission-users on this mailbox, and when they open Outlook/login to OWA the mailbox is automatically opened. Great stuff. However, only the Inbox folder is visible, and the alternative to create a folder is grayed out. If they open the mailbox explicitly (for instance in OWA by clicking open other user's mailbox) they can see other folders, as well as create new ones. What configuration is needed to be able to view and create subfolders directly?

But for HTTPS request, I lose the "forwardfor" information. I need to save the client IP address. How can I use HAproxy to load balance across a number of SSL servers, allowing those servers to know the client's IP address?

• Windows replacement for HAProxy

  It does not appear that there is a similar question to this already posted, so I will go ahead and ask. I am working on a project that could benefit from having two - four servers handling incoming requests to a backend webservice. The service does not require SSL but does need to support occassional long running processes (upto 120 secs). This project does not at present have the funding to purchase a hardware load balancing solution. I have previously used HAProxy as a solution for this, and found it very simple and straightforward. Is there a similar product for windows (server 2003 or 2008) which provides similar configuration options and runs as a lightweight service? For reasons outside my control I cannot setup a Linux machine (physical or virtual) and so I am looking for behaviour that can be deployed on a windows machine. I can only find Perlbal which appears to fall into this category. So as not to keep this open indifenitely I will give credit to the only answer.

• Why google return soft 404 when I redirect on signup page?

  Since one month, I've got an increased "soft 404" reported by google webmaster tools but work well for users. I made some fix but can't figure out how to solve it. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 when you click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to : http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) you are redirected with the http status 302 to sign in, and then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect user to the good page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorize the "get" link) To simplify, the question is: how to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "get" and not to be penalized by google with "soft 404". • Configuring vsftpd with nginx on ubuntu

  I have vsftpd installed on Ubuntu 12.04LTS along with nginx, php, and sql on an Amazon ec2 instance. The web server is good to go, but I'm having trouble connecting to the FTP server. I'm not quite sure how to set the privileges or what configuration options I might be missing. By default, the location of the web root is at /usr/share/nginx/www and it is owned by root:root. The web server runs as user www-data in the group www-data. I've opened port 21 and set the passive ports in the ec2 backend and ufw firewall. In vsftpd.conf, I have: ... anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES local_umask=0027 chroot_local_user=YES pasv_enable=YES pas_max_port=12100 pasv_min_port=12000 port_enable=YES ... Now, I'm unsure how to create the FTP user that when I login, displays my web directory with write access. I've tried it a few different ways, but I keep running into errors (either no connection, no write access, or very slow timeouts.)

• Domain name is forwarding to my localhost, no idea why

  On my local development machine, I have a WAMP setup (Windows Vista Home Premium, Apache 2, MySQL and PHP 5). One of my projects is rehash.dustinfineout.com, which may be related to the problem... For some reason, when I try to visit http://www.rehash.com in a browser, it forwards automatically to 127.0.0.1 loopback/localhost. I discovered this entirely accidentally. I have already looked at the http.conf and extra/httpd-vhosts.conf Apache configuration files and these are not causing it. I also checked the windows hosts file but that had no entries in it either (C:/WINDOWS/System32/drivers/etc/hosts - maybe there is another location I need to check). Any ideas? Just to clarify, rehash.com is NOT my domain.

• Should a stack trace be in the error message presented to the user?

  I've got a bit of an argument at my workplace and I'm trying to figure out who is right, and what is the right thing to do. Context: an intranet web application that our customers use for accounting and other ERP stuff. I'm of the opinion that an error message presented to the user (when things crash) should include as much information as possible, including the stack trace. Of course, it has to start with a nice "An Error has occurred, please submit the below information to the developers" in large, friendly letters. My reasoning is that a screenshot of the crashed application will often be the only easily available source of information. Sure, you can try to get a hold of the client's systems administrator(s), attempt to explain where your log files are, etc, but that will probably be slow and painful (talking to the client representatives mostly is). Also, having an immediate and full information is extremely useful in development, where you don't have to go hunting through the log files to find what you need on every exception. (But that could be solved with a configuration switch.) Unfortunately there has been some kind of "Security audit" (no idea how they did that without the sources... but whatever), and they complained about the full exception messages citing them as a security threat. Naturally, the clients (at least one that I know of) has taken this at face value and now demands that the messages be cleaned. I fail to see how a potential attacker could use a stack trace to figure anything out he couldn't have figured out before. Are there any examples, any documented proof of anyone ever doing that? I think that we should fight this foolish idea, but perhaps I'm the fool here, so... Who's right?

• Sharepoint database connection issue after upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2

  I took a backup of all our Sharepoint WSS 3.0 databases and restored them to a new Windows 2008 R2 server. The new SQL server has the same name and IP address as the old one. The only difference between the two is the new one has SQL 2008 R2 and the old one has SQL 2005. When I navigate to the sharepoint url I get this error: Cannot connect to the configuration database. I checked the logs at this location: "%commonprogramfiles%/Microsoft Shared/web server extensions/12/Logs" and found this error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. Any ideas?
