• How do I start a XUL Runner application maximized?

  I've started developing my first app with XUL and I've run into a problem that I can't seem to solve. All I want to do is have my app start maximized. I've set the sizemode attribute to maximized on my top level window element but that has no effect. My prefs.js file has the following line: pref("toolkit.defaultChromeFeatures", "chrome,centerscreen,menubar,resizable,status,toolbar,scrollbars"); This also does not work. My window appears and it only has a close button (X) and does not have a minimize or maximize button. Any ideas???

• Can't correctly stream x264 video to mobile via RTSP

  Hello! I'm trying to stream video compressed with x264 and NeroAAC and hinted with MP4Box. When i'm playing it with VLC player streaming works fine, as expected. When i'm trying to open URL with my HTC Hero, it switches to player mode, then starts "loading video" animation, then after some time it shows "unable to connect to server". Sample movies provided with DSS streamed fine regardless bitrate. I tried few encoding options, but always the same result. I suspect nocabac and level=11 but it didn't changed nothing. Is there some more specific encoding options for such type? Thank You!

• Python namespace in between builtins and global?

  Hello, As I understand it python has the following outermost namespaces: Builtin - This namespace is global across the entire interpreter and all scripts running within an interpreter instance. Globals - This namespace is global across a module, ie across a single file. I am looking for a namespace in between these two, where I can share a few variables declared within the main script to modules called by it. For example, script.py: import Log from Log import foo from foo log = Log() foo() foo.py: def foo(): log.Log('test') # I want this to refer to the callers log object I want to be able to call script.py multiple times and in each case, expose the module level log object to the foo method. Any ideas if this is possible? It won't be too painful to pass down the log object, but I am working with a large chunk of code that has been ported from Javascript. I also understand that this places constraints on the caller of foo to expose its log object. Thanks, Paul

  Dear SOFers, I would like to cut a vector of values ranging 0-70 to x number of categories, and would like the upper limit of each category. So far, I have tried this using cut() and am trying to extract the limits from levels. I have a list of levels, from which I would like to extract the second number from each level. How can I extract the values between space and ] (which is the number I'm interested in)? I have: > levels(bins) [1] "(-0.07,6.94]" "(6.94,14]" "(14,21]" "(21,28]" "(28,35]" [6] "(35,42]" "(42,49]" "(49,56]" "(56,63.1]" "(63.1,70.1]" and would like to get: [1] 6.94 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63.1 70.1 Or is there a better way of calculating the upper bounds of categories?

  im all new to framework. so the structure of code igniter looks like: system system/application the system folder is code igniter's base folder right? so if they in the future releases a new version i just put application in the new system folder and its upgraded right? does this mean that i shouldn't put new files and so on in the system folder? cause some code could be used for other applications and i want to put them under the current application im developing, not inside the application folder. i want my application's classes to extend my base system's classes which in turn extend code igniter's base system class. so there are 3 levels. so how could i accomplish this? where to put the system level between CI and my application?

• C#: Efficiently search a large string for occurences of other strings

  Hi, I'm using C# to continuously search for multiple string "keywords" within large strings, which are = 4kb. This code is constantly looping, and sleeps aren't cutting down CPU usage enough while maintaining a reasonable speed. The bog-down is the keyword matching method. I've found a few possibilities, and all of them give similar efficiency. 1) http://tomasp.net/articles/ahocorasick.aspx -I do not have enough keywords for this to be the most efficient algorithm. 2) Regex. Using an instance level, compiled regex. -Provides more functionality than I require, and not quite enough efficiency. 3) String.IndexOf. -I would need to do a "smart" version of this for it provide enough efficiency. Looping through each keyword and calling IndexOf doesn't cut it. Does anyone know of any algorithms or methods that I can use to attain my goal?

  Hey everyone, I've been working for some time on (Java) Bytecode, however, it had never occurred to me to ask why are some instructions typed? I understand that in an ADD operation, we need to distinguish between an integer addition and a FP addition (that's why we have IADD and FADD). However, why do we need to distinguish between ISTORE and FSTORE? They both involve the exact same operation, which is moving 32 bits from the stack to a local variable position? The only answer I can think of is for type-safety, to prevent this: (ILOAD, ILOAD, FADD). However, I believe that type-safety is already enforced at the Java language level. OK, the Class file format is not directly coupled with Java, so is this a way to enforce type-safety for languages that do not support it? Any thought? Thank you.

• cannot access localhost using ip

  I have done a small web development project using eclipse. It runs well when I try running it on browser with url localhost:8080/myproject/home.html. But if I want to access it on another machine (laptop, mobile, etc. using the same wifi) it is not possible; it is not able to connect. After Googling for a while found out that I have to use the IP address instead of 'localhost'. So I tried 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html, but still does not work. In fact i am unable to open that url on the same machine (where localhost:8080/myproject/home.html works fine). I also added a new Inbound rule in control panel firewall settings, allowing access to all ports for protocol TCP. Still have problem in running application with the url 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html (both on same machine as well as laptop and mobile). • Executing a dynamically bound function in Clojure

  I'd like to pre-store a bunch of function calls in a data structure and later evaluate/execute them from within another function. This works as planned for functions defined at namespace level with defn (even though the function definition comes after my creation of the data structure) but will not work with functions defined by let [name (fn or letfn inside the function. Here's my small self-contained example: (def todoA '(funcA)) (def todoB '(funcB)) (def todoC '(funcC)) (def todoD '(funcD)) ; unused (defn funcA [] (println "hello funcA!")) • MVC (model-view-controller) - can it be explained in simple terms?

  I need to explain to a not-very-technical manager the MVC (model-view-controller) concept and ran into trouble. The problem is that the explanation needs to be on a "your grandma will get it" level - e.g. even the fairly straightforward explanation offered on MVC Wiki page didn't work, at least with my commentary. Does anyone have a reference to a good MVC explanation in simple terms? It would ideally be done with non-techie metaphor examples (e.g. similar to "Decorator pattern is like glasses") - one reason I failed was that all MVC examples I could come up with were development related. I once saw a list of pattern explanations but to the best of my memory MVC was not on it. Thanks!

  Using clojure, I've been able to successfully setup log4j very simply by using this log4j.properties file, and including log4j in my classpath. # BEGIN log4j.properties log4j.appender.STDOUT=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender log4j.appender.STDOUT.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.STDOUT.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{MMdd HHmmss SSS} %5p %c [%t] %m\n log4j.rootLogger=DEBUG, STDOUT Then after :use'ing clojure.contrib.logging, I'm able to print a statement with the desired formatting as expected like so: (info "About to print this") (debug "This is debug-level") My question is how to achieve a consistent formatting for logging statements made from loggers configured in other libraries. I thought I could find existing loggers using org.apache.log4j.LogManager.getCurrentLoggers() and change the PatternLayouts there, but I'm not able to iterate over that enumeration in clojure, as I get the following error: Dont know how to create ISeq from: java.util.Vector$1 I assume this is possible somehow, and probably very simply. • What is the fastest way to learn JPA ?

  I'm looking for the best resources (books, frameworks, tutorials) that will help me get up to speed with JPA. I've been happily using iBatis/JDBC for my persistence needs, so I need resources that will hopefully provide comparable functions on how to do things. e.g. how to I set the isolation level for each transaction ? I know there might be 10 books on the topic, so hopefully, your recommendation could narrow down to the best 2 books. Should I start with OpenJPA or are there other opensource JPA frameworks to use ? P.S. Do suggest if I should learn JPA2 or JPA1 ? My goal ultimately is to be able to write a Google App Engine app (which uses JPA1). Thanks Jacque

• Is it possible to modify ASP.NET to no longer require runat="server"?

  I know why runat="server" is currently required (ASP.NET why runat="server"), but the consensus is that it should not be required if you incorporate a simple default into the design (I agree of course). Would it be possible to modify, extend, decompile and recreate, intercept or otherwise change the behavior of how ASP.NET parses ASPX and ASCX files so that runat="server" would no longer be required? For instance, I assume that a version of Mono could be branched to accomplish this goal.   As per http://help.eclipse.org/helios/topic/org.eclipse.jst.ws.cxf.doc.user/reference/preferences.html The CXF 2.x preferences can be accessed via Window > Preferences... > Web Services > CXF 2.x Preferences from the top level menu. but I dont see the option CXF 2.x Preferences under Web Services, though I have chosen JavaEE perspective. any ideas how to enable this? Sorry for such a simple question. I also cannot do not see CXF as a Project Facet as per http://help.eclipse.org/helios/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.jst.ws.jaxws.doc.user/gettingstarted/requirements.html I know this is something to do with getting Eclipse aware of CXF libraries, but cant find the tutorial for this.

• Headless HTML rendering to image on CentOS 5.4

  Hello, I have a project requirement to render HTML and capture the rendered image as a file on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. My specific requirements are: 1) Input will be a URL to the page to render, output will be an image file containing the rendered image of the page 2) CSS must be supported by the renderer up to CSS level-1 3) Static images in the page must be displayed properly in the rendered image, including any transparent color in .GIF files 4) Must be able to run on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. 5) Solution must not depend on any product or component that is not free for commercial use I do not need to do anything with the page other than get the screen capture and save it to an image. The hard part seems to be doing this in a headless environment. Some of the solutions that I've seen discussed need a display in order to work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jim

  When dealing with random memory overwrites, in MSVC it is possible to validate the state of the heap at various points with a call to _CrtCheckMemory, and know with at least a small level of confidence that the code up until the check was not responsible for any errors that might cause new or malloc to fail later. In XCode, whats the equivalent way to try and box in a memory overwrite? All I have at the moment is a random failure of a call to new, somewhere deep in the bowels of some code with no real idea of how long the code has been running with a corrupt heap up until that point.

• Where are the really high quality and complex Swing components?

  Looking at Swing, I have the feeling that it comes with many useful and reasonable atomic components in its core. And when I look at the Web there are hundrets of quickly plugged together components (among them many date/time pickers, pimped lists and tables), which have in common that I could easily write them on my own, if I needed them. When I build big software and come to the point where I need a domain-specific component which is really big, I mostly come to the point where I have to write it on my own, which, due to the point that they are not just plugged together lists and tables, isn't done qickly. So, the question is, why are there no Swing component galleries which contain more than just customized date/time pickers or lists with added tree support. Where are the components which really raise the level of abstraction, or are in best case domain-specific?

  I am building a web site in C# using MVC.Net How can I secure that no unauthorized persons can access my methods? What I mean is that I want to make sure that only admins can create articles on my page. If I put this logic in the method actually adding this to the database, wouldn't I have business logic in my data layer? Is it a good practise to have a seperate security layer that is always in between of the data layer and the business layer to make? The problem is that if I protect at a higher level I will have to have checks on many places and it is more likely that I miss one place and users can bypass security. Thanks!

  I've seen this answer, and I wonder (I hope) if C++11 has come up with a native better method to concatenate, and possibly format, strings. With "better" I mean actually really one-line, like in pretty much all higher level languages (bonus points if it supports something like python's "formatted string"%(tuple) syntax but I guess that's really hoping for too much). The ideal result should be something like: my_func("bla bla bla" << int(my_int) << "bla bla bla"); The only barely acceptable methods listed in that answer are the fastformat ones, but I wonder if C++11 managed to do better.

Problem I have various audiences for presentations requiring display in MS PowerPoint -- ranging from managers to developers, whose depth of technical knowledge and requirements for knowledge varies. Question I have tried various settings for fonts, colors, and so on, but displaying a diagram with any level of detail (even simple class diagrams). These diagrams are very difficult to fit into a PowerPoint slide and render well when using a projector or a Live Meeting. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

  For the sake of the question, by 'shareware' I mean a software which is relatively small in size (up to few dozens of mb) and available for download and evaluation through a web site. I'm asking this question, because I don't understand something regarding the current state of windows commercial desktop development. It seems to me that: There is no reliable statistic regarding the extent of windows systems with .Net Framework installed. It makes no sense to force the end user to install the 20-60mb .Net for an application which may be smaller. Applications conforms to the term 'shareware' above have a big share on the win os market. Much of them don't need the capabilities of low level languages like c++, and therefore ideally they should be developed with a RAD enviroment. So, One would suppose there will be a blossom of RAD enviroments for native win code. But I know about only one - Delphi, and Delphi is so unpopular. How is that?

• Log RuntimeException thrown from thread created by Spring via the @Async annotation

  I'm having some difficulty logging RuntimeException from a thread. My system is: Java 7 (b118), Spring 3.0.5. The threads are not created by hand, but via Spring's @Async annotation, which creates it's own executor behind the scenes, so I don't really have the option of overriding any methods of the thread, FutureTask or anything low level. So my question is if Spring has any support or if there are any best practices for handling (logging) these type of exceptions? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
