• javascript - catch SyntaxError and run alternate function

  Hello there, I'm trying to build something on javascript that I can have an input that can be everything like string, xml, javascript and (non-javascript string without quotes) as follows: //strings eval("'hello I am a string'"); /* note the following proper quote marks */ //xml eval(<p>Hello I am a XML doc</p>); //javascript eval("var hello = 2+2;"); So this first 3 are working well since they are simple javascript native formats but when I try use this inside javascript //plain-text without quotes eval("hello I am a plain text without quotes"); //--SyntaxError: missing ; before statement:--// Obviously javascript interprets this as syntax error because it thinks its javascript throwing a SyntaxError. So what I would like to do it to catch this error and perform the adjustment method if this occurs. I've already tried with try catch but it doesn't work since it keeps returning the Syntax error as soon as it tries to execute the code. Any help would be much appreciated Cheers :) Additional Information: Imagine an external file that javascript would read, using spidermonkey, so it's a non-browser stuff(I can't use HttpRequest, DOM, etc...)..not sure if this matters, but there it is. :)

  I have an AdvancedDataGrid with a custom label function whose value can change based on other form status (specifically, there's a drop down to choose the time display format for some columns). The columns that have time formats have formatColumnTime as their labelFunction value, because extracting the seconds in that function and passing it in to the formatters made for a more testable app (IMHO). So, when the timeFormat.selectedItem value changes, I want to force my grid to re-calculate the labels of these colums. What method must I call on it? invalidateProperties() didn't work, so that's out.

• Eclipse - How can I change a 'Project Facet' from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 5.5?

  (Eclipse 3.4, Ganymede) I have an existing Dynamic Web Application project in Eclipse. When I created the project, I specified 'Default configuration for Apache Tomcat v6' under the 'Configuration' drop down. It's a month or 2 down the line, and I would now like to change the configuration to Tomcat 'v5.5'. (This will be the version of Tomcat on the production server.) I have tried the following steps (without success): I selected Targeted Runtimes under the Project Properties The Tomcat v5.5 option was disabled and The UI displayed this message: If the runtime you want to select is not displayed or is disabled you may need to uninstall one or more of the currently installed project facets. I then clicked on the Uninstall Facets... link. Under the Runtimes tab, only Tomcat 6 displayed. For Dynamic Web Module, I selected version 2.4 in place of 2.5. Under the Runtimes tab, Tomcat 5.5 now displayed. However, the UI now displayed this message: Cannot change version of project facet Dynamic Web Module to 2.4. The Finish button was disabled - so I reached a dead-end. I CAN successfully create a NEW Project with a Tomcat v5.5 configuration. For some reason, though, it will not let me downgrade' an existing Project. As a work-around, I created a new Project and copied the source files from the old Project. Nonetheless, the work-around was fairly painful and somewhat clumsy. Can anyone explain how I can 'downgrade' the Project configuration from 'Tomcat 6' to 'Tomcat 5'? Or perhaps shed some light on why this happened? Thanks Pete

• Recommended (remote) backup technique for SQL Compact?

  Hello. Is there a generally recommended approach to backing up an SQL CE/SQLite database over the Internet? The client source is .NET/Windows based, the backup destination runs Ubuntu. I am using a small SQL CE database and have been trying to figure out the most reasonable approach to doing this. The file size (in terms of transfer time/bandwidth) isn't a big deal. I had a look around, and so far the things I've given thought are: Online backup services (Dropbox, Mozy) Opening an FTP/SFTP connection Writing a custom protocol with public/private keys Unsure regarding #1 because I doubt they would like it if somebody transferred gigabytes of data using a POST; and they do not seem to offer native (or .NET) APIs. FTP/SFTP seems risky in terms of security and privileges (as the password/key would need to be stored on the client side). With the right user group/user privileges this may work. Custom protocol seems overkill, which is why I am hoping somebody has already defined a reasonable API for language/platform-independent backups over the Internet. Any hints S.O.?

  I'm getting this error during compilation: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not create the Java virtual machine. Could not reserve enough space for object heap What's worse, the error occurs intermittently. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be dependent on the amount of code in the application. If I get rid of some variables or drop some imported libraries, it will compile. Then when I add more to it, I get the error again. I've included the following sources into the application in the [project_root]/src/ directory: org.apache.httpclient (I've stripped all references to log4j from the sources, so don't need it) org.apache.codec (as a dependency) org.apache.httpcore (dependency of httpclient) and my own activity code consisting of nothing more than an instance of HttpClient. I know this has something to do with the amount of memory necessary during compile time or some compiler options, and I'm not really stressing my system while i'm coding. I've got 2GB of memory on this Core Duo laptop and windows reports only 860MB page file usage (haven't used any other memory tools. I should have plenty of memory and processing power for this... and I'm only compiling some common http libs... total of 406 source files. What gives? I closed some web browser windows and recompiled the same exact code with no edits and it compiled with no issue. this is definitely a compiler issue related to memory usage. • What is the right way to scale a Flex application up to fullscreen?

  Fullscreen mode and I have been battling for a while in this Flex application, and I'm coming up short on Google results to end my woes. I have no problem going into fullscreen mode by doing a Application.application.stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;, but the rest of the content just sits there in the top, left corner at it's original size. All right, says I, I'll just do a stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL and make it figure out how to pull this off. And it looks like it does. Except that when you mouse over the individual checkboxes and buttons and various components, they all fidget slightly. Just a slight jump up or down as they resize...on mouse over. Well, this is frustrating, but bearable. I can always just invoke invalidateSize() explicitly for all of them. But for the comboboxes. The ones at the bottom have their menus go off the bottom of the screen, and when I pop out of fullscreen mode, their drop downs cut off half way. I have no idea how to fix that. Can someone step in here, and put me out of my misery?   I'm triying to compile my iPhone app from ssh. This is for my build tool that run in another machine. The base sdk is iPhone Device 3.0. • Silverlight performance with a large number of Objects Org Chart.

  Hello, I’m working on a org chart project(SL 3) and I’m seeing the UI thread hang when the chart is building around 2,000 nodes and when it renders it takes about a min and then FPS drop to a crawl. Here is the code flow. Page.xaml.cs calls a wcf service that returns a list of AD users. Then we use Linq to build a collection of nodes to bind to the Orgchart.cs OrgChart.cs is a canvas and displays a collection of nodes and connecting lines. Node.cs is a canvas and has user data can contain children nodes. NodeContent.xaml is a user control that has borders so I can set the background, textblocks to display user's data, Events that handle the selected and expaned nodes, and storyboards that resize the nodes when they are selected or expanded.I noticed during hours of debugging , here in the InitializeComponent(); section where it loads the xaml it seems to be where the preformance hit is happening. System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent(this, new System.Uri("/Silverlight.Custom;component/NodeContent.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)); So I guess I have two questions. Can threading help in any way with the UI thread hanging while drawing the nodes? How can I avoid the hit when calling this user control?   Hello, I'm trying to set up a maven web project that runs Jetty. In this project, I need 2 JNDIs... my plan is to configure 2 connection pools using c3p0 in Jetty. • Using R in Processing through rJava/JRI?

  Hi guys, Is it possible to run R in Processing through rJava/JRI? If I deployed a Processing app on the web, would the client need R on their system? I'm looking to create an interactive information dashboard that I can deploy on the web. It seems that Processing is probably my best bet for the interactive/web part of things. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there are many math/stats functions built-in. And there aren't any libraries for plotting data either. I've been using R and gpplot2 for a few months and am thrilled (amazed) at how easily it manipulates and plots data. So I'm wondering now if can get the best of both worlds and run R through a Processing applet. From the JRI website: JRI is a Java/R Interface, which allows to run R inside Java applications as a single thread. Basically it loads R dynamic library into Java and provides a Java API to R functionality. It supports both simple calls to R functions and a full running REPL. In a sense JRI is the inverse of rJava and both can be combined (i.e. you can run R code inside JRI that calls back to the JVM via rJava). The JGR project makes the full use of both JRI and rJava to provide a full Java GUI for R. JRI uses native code, but it supports all platforms where Sun's Java (or compatible) is available, including Windows, Mac OS X, Sun and Linux (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Thanks for the advice :)

• py2app, pyObjc & macports compilation errors

  Hi, I'm currently writing a small python app that embeds cherrypy and django using py2app. It worked well until I tried to include pyobjc in my project, since my app needed a small GUI (which consists of a small icon in the top menu bar + a drop down menu). I can run my python script without any problem (I'm using python 2.6 with macports), but I can't launch the application bundle generated by py2app. A dialog box appears with the following message: ImportError: dlopen(/Users/denis/tlon/standalone/mac/dist/django_cherry.app/Contents/Resources/lib/python2.6/lib-dynload/CoreFoundation/_inlines.so, 2): no suitable image found. Did find: /Users/denis/tlon/standalone/mac/dist/django_cherry.app/Contents/Resources/lib/python2.6/lib-dynload/CoreFoundation/_inlines.so: mach-o, but wrong architecture I did a quick : sudo port -u install py26-pyobjc +universal but for some reason macports tries to build openssl, with which compilation fails each time. It seems the problem is related to zLib - this is what appears in the logs : :info:build ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libz.dylib, file is not of required architecture ...And here is the output of file /opt/local/lib/libz.dylib : /opt/local/lib/libz.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures /opt/local/lib/libz.dylib (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 /opt/local/lib/libz.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 Nothing looks wrong to me. I'm a bit stuck here. I don't even understand what openssl has to do with pyObjc, but it looks like I can't go anywhere if I don't manage to compile it. Macports really suck sometimes :/ EDIT I manage to fix Macports issue, but not py2app one. If I get it right, py2app try to create a 32-bits app, while Core Foundation files on Snow Leopard are for 64 bits architectures. Damn. Either I build this on Leopard, either I have to find a way to create a 64bit app with py2app, but then Snow Leopard only.

• Implementing BindingList<T>

  I am trying to learn more about BindingList because I believe that it will help me with a project that I am working on. Currently, I have an object class (ScannedImage) that is a subtype of a class (HashedImage) that subtypes a native .Net object (Image). There is no reason why I couldn't move the two subtypes together. I am simply subtyping an object that I had previously constructed, but I will now be storing my ScannedImage object in an RDB (well, not technically - only the details and probably the thumbnail). Also, the object class has member types that are my own custom types (Keywords). I am using a custom datagridview to present these objects, but am handling all changes to the ScannedImage object with my own code. As you can probably imagine, I have quite a few events to handle that occur in these base types. So, if I changed my object to implement INotifyPropertyChanged, would the object collection (implementing BindingList) receive notifications of changes to the ScannedImage object? Also, if Keywords were to implement INotifyPropertyChanged, would changes be accessible to the BindingList through the ScannedImage object? Sorry if this seems rather newbish. I only recently discovered the BindingList and not having formal training in C# programming - am having a difficult time moving forward with this. Also, if anyone has any good reference material, I would be thankful for links. Obviously, I have perused the MSDN Library. I have found a few good links on the web, but it seems that a lot of people are now using WPF and ObservableCollection. My project is based on Winforms and .Net3.5 framework. TIA

• How should I write Jquery Mobile app for browsers with and without javascript support?

  Hi, I'm trying to wrap my head around jQuery Mobile. My aim is to build a very fast application with a look and feel as close as possible to a native app (at least for modern devices). I understand there are two ways of navigating between pages: Loading each page as a separate page and linking to other pages with regular html anchors. Putting all (or many) pages on one single web page and navigating between them by means of javascript ($.mobile.changePage (method) and similar api functions. The first approach should work on all browsers, but performs quite poorly since there is a delay between each page transition. The second looks like it should be much faster, so I would definitely prefer this approach. But how would that work for mobile device browsers without javascript support? It certainly seems to violate jQuery Mobile's aim to provide a gracefully degraded experience for C-grade browsers. It looks to me like I need to implement my app twice, once optimized for browsers with javascript support, once for browsers without? Using may be another option, but that looks even more messy. What's the recommended way to approach this dilemma? Is there anything I have not noticed? Thanks, Adrian
