• What is the right way to Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10 Dual-Triple Boot Partitioning for Laptop OEM?

  Hi Linux Community, I find my self struggling with the ever slow and buggy windoze OS once again. It's Time to change with the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit as a really faster Operating System. My Hard Disk laptop as a RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partition they are both Primary. I Have the System Recovery DVD for Windows 64bit should anything happen. Here's the layout I used with windows before: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 284,89GB (Primary,Boot,Pagefile,Dump) * HP_TOOLS system partition FAT32 - 99MB (Primary) * (D:) RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) Here's the layout I want to make based on your answers * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 60GB (Primary) (sda1) * (D:) Windows DATA partition (user files) NTFS - 120GB(Primary)(sda2);wanna share with Linux * Linux root Ext4 - 100GB (Primary)(sda3) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux swap swap- RAM size, 3GB (sda4) * Linux root Ext3- 15,9GB (Extended)(sda5) (OpenSuse or Puppy) Here is my New Ubuntu 10.10 64bit layout in use now: * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) (sda1) **Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.(?)** * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 90GB (Primary) (sda2) * (D:) Windows 7 RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) (sda3) * Linux system partition EXTENDED - 195GB (Logical) * Linux root Ext4- 10GB (Extended) (sda5) * Linux home Ext3- 185GB (Extended) (sda6) I didn't know if I could wipe all previous partitions when i installed Ubuntu because of the RECOVERY partition so I just made the space for my extended partition by deleting the HP_TOOLS (Fat32). By doing this I managed to make and successfully install Ubuntu 64 but I couldn't actually make the partition for the swap or a third Linux OS. • ZFS: RAIDZ versus stripe with ditto blocks

  I'm going to build a ZFS file server from FreeBSD. I learned recently that I can't expand a RAIDZ udev once it's part of the pool. That's a problem since I'm a home user and will probably add one disk a year tops. But what if I set copies=3 against my entire pool and just throw individual drives into the pool separated? I've read somewheres that the copies will try and distribute across drives if possible. Is there a guarantee there? I really just want protection from bit rot and drive failure on the cheap. Speed's not an issue since it'll go over a 1Gb network and at MOST stream 720p podcasts. Would my data be guaranteed safe from a single drive failure? Are there things I'm not considering? Any and all input is appreciated.

• How to Shutdown PC by Pressing Power Button

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. What I want is that upon pressing Power Button it should at once start shutdown without asking any more confirmations System details: Win-7 Home Premium 64 bit Intel i3 530 Asus P montherboard EDIT: It is Desktop PC

• Accessing second hard drive

  Hi, So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my computer. I installed it on my 60gb SSD hard drive, and in the installation it never acknowledged the existence of my second hard drive. The hard drive that I keep all my files on, and which I want to make my home folder if I can, is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (WD1002FAEX). I've read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount but honestly cannot work out how to access the hard drive from my Ubuntu installation. I did have Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu. I have backed up all the files on the hard drive, but if I could just access them straight off that would be super cool. Does anyone know how I can use the second hard drive? • Windows 7 stopped connecting to samba share

  I have a problem with Windows 7 Home connecting to samba on linux server. It's worked fine for a year and without any changes in configuration or updates it suddenly stopped working. The strangest thing for me is that it stopped working for no reason that I could think of. After a few minutes after trying to connect I get: \\ip is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Other computers in that network (XP machines) connect to samba without any problem. I've tried adding LmCompatibilityLevel as described here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue , but it didn't help.

• Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • Reloading Resources on Resume

  I'm having a problem with my game. If I press the "Home button" the game is paused... everythings fine, but if I then go back to the game all the resources are reloaded before I can continue the game. And it takes quite a bit. Is this normal, or is there a way to avoid the reloading? I have write following code in onResume and onPause method.   I'm setting up a home NAS device (Synology DS409) that I'm planning to use for Time Machine backups (amongst other things). What are the tradeoffs between using iSCSI or AFP to mount the backup volume? The Synology wiki suggests that iSCSI is better if the Mac will be frequently disconnected from the network or sleeping, from the point of view of the volume automatically remounting. What about filesystem consistency? Given that unplugging a USB drive without properly unmounting it often requires the Time Machine volume to be repaired, would iSCSI have the same issues?

• Backup Dropbox to Amazon Glacier

  i'm using Dropbox for Backup which means i keep all my files in my Dropbox folder (encrypted using encfs but that should not be relevant). I like this solution because it is automatic and keeps copies of my files on several machines at different locations. The only thing i could see go wrong is that Dropbox has some sort of bug that tells all my machines to delete the files. So currently i do a Backup of the Dropbox folder to an external Harddrive. With Amazon Glacier it seems affordable to automate Backup snapshots of my Dropbox. What i am looking for is a tool that will do this for me - the base case scenario would be that files would go from Dropbox (using their API) directly to Amazon as uploading the ~80GB from my home connection would take forever... • Using Remote Desktop, connect to a Windows 7 domain user account without first logging on locally?

  I have a dell laptop (henceforth we'll call this the server) running Windows 7 Enterprise. The server is part of my company's domain. My primary user account is a domain account. When I am at home and not connected to the domain, I prefer to connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection from my MacBook Pro (we'll call this the client). The problem is, that if I do not physically login to the server, I am unable to connect to it using RDC from the client. I have a local administrator account on the server, and connecting to it via RDC works just fine. I had a feeling that the Mac RDC application was not giving me the full story, so I attempted the same procedure from a Windows 7 client. When trying to login, I get this message: So basically, If I logon to the server physically with my domain user and lock the computer, I can then successfully logon from the client. Otherwise, I am unable to connect.

• Easy way to restrict permissions in an elementary school computer lab?

  I'm putting together an elementary school computer lab. I have nine winxp pro machines that are not networked and do not have internet access (no money to do either). I've created separate student and admin accounts, and have the students set as limited users. However, I'm interested in further restricting their permissions. I want to make it such that they cannot: -delete any files, even just from their own profile -rename any files -move around the icons on the desktop -change any display settings -access a usb device without a password (they bring in their own from home which are chock-full of viruses) Oh, one last thing, they still have to be able to save word documents. Is this even possible? I can download software, but, like I said: no internet, no server.

• Properly configuring Linux keyboard on my laptop

  Hey! I have a ps/2 keyboard connected to an Acer Aspire 1694 WLMI via a ps/2 to usb converter. The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.04. The keyboard is a HP model number: SK-250C. I have configured in the 'Keyboard Preferences' the layout to HP SK-250x Multimedia Keyboard. The big problem is when I press certain keys (like for example the arrow keys) I get the 'Save Screenshot' dialog. This is really getting annoying, sometimes I am tying to write an address in browser and just want to go back a few letters and can't. There are other keys that trigger the dialog also (windows key, insert key, home key, page up and page down key, delete key, end key) All works fine If I use the laptop keyboard, but I really want to use the HP keyboard. EDIT: I was testing this and it seems that if I have the 'Num Lock' key turned off the keys work properly. Strange but true!!

• How to set up an inter-OS partition?

  I need a working partition configuration for use and accessibility on both Ubuntu and Windows. I have an 8GB USB flash drive onto which I am installing Ubuntu 11.10 so that I can have a personal bootable OS wherever I go. I've installed Ubuntu several times, but I just can't seem to get this one partition right. This is my own configuration: Partition 1: Primary - 200MB - Beginning - Ext4 - /boot Partition 2: Primary - 1300MB - End - swap area Partition 3: Logical - 5200MB - Beginning - Ext4 - / Partition 4: Logical - 1258MB - Beginning - Ext4 - /home Partition 5: Logical - 42MB - End - FAT32? - /windows? What I want to do is to get partition 5 configured so I can access it on both the installed Ubuntu system and a Windows system (when the USB drive is connected while Windows is booted). Basically, what I want is Ubuntu installed on the USB drive along with a partition that I can access with other operating systems. I'm thinking I just need the technical configuration of "Use as:" and "Mount point:" for my final partition. But I don't know. Any help with this is appreciated. And any other tips are appreciated as well.

It was very fascinating talking to all those JUG Members of last years' (2011) party and hearing about their hopes & expectations.  Especially from members of SouJava and LJC. Hanging out with my friends Best food and one of my colleagues won the raffle prize. My friend Brian won a jacket 3 years ago and my friend Craig won a camera last year. 2010 when I took home 2 awards on behalf of JSRs I'm on. When Patrick & Scott sang 'Light My Fire'! • Can't see any YouTube videos

  I have a problem with watching YouTube videos. It says: "An error occurred, please try again later". I've tried loading different videos and that's what it says to all the videos I try to watch. I've tried using another browser, clearing cache + cookies etc, but none of that really worked out. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, I use Google Chrome as my browser. And the YouTube videos was able to be watched earlier. I suspect that it has something to do with the PC, since I've got YouTube working on my laptop earlier. Not sure if it still works on my laptop though. Hope I've given enough information for you to help me out with this problem. Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know. Anyone who can help me out?

  I am about to get a ton of business cards printed from my new corporation, and I am allowed to have a QR code on it, and I would really like to be able to add a photo to be attached to the vcard. • Detecting damage done by virus

  This morning after I went to college, a virus infected my PC without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagnosed with was "fakespypro" on a fully updated Windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appreciated.

  I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • print jobs are held until the VirtualBox guest OS is reboot

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• How to start a high school Java/Android development club for 13-17 year olds

  My wife is a high school maths teacher, and is considering starting a programming club for 13-17 years olds who show an interest. Their interest seems to be around Apps and Android which I have little experience of. The kids would be (presumably) interested in programming, and have a fairly high level of computing knowledge. We would provide them with resources and some knowledge, but hopefully a lot would be self guided. I'm hoping stack overflow'ers can provide some tips or starting points. Specific things I think I'll need are; A development Environment; Currently I'm looking towards Java and Android, developed in Eclipse, probably installed on donated older hardware Some initial direction; There seem to be a plethora or 'start android' tutorials, so some recommendations for good ones are valuable, as are recommended paper books A Target; Some final project they should be shooting for A Route; This is where I'm most stuck, how to lead them through the required Java concepts and learning they would need Some related questions already out there Language+IDE for teaching high school students? Teaching "web design/development" to high-school home-school group. Good sources? How can I bootstrap a software development community at my school?

• VPN: What should my Gateway remote ID be?

  I have a Netgear ProSafe UTM. I set the Gateway local ID to it's WAN IP. But I'm not sure what to put for it's Remote ID. I want to be able to connect to it from a laptop across the internet. I can chose between: Remote IP FQDN Client FQDN Cert DN Frankly I've tried them messing around with them all but I'm just shooting in the dark, and the help desk docs are worthless. Also, Googling around seems to end up with lots of pages not really related to what I want. A lot of pages on configuring Cisco or Windows home networking or privacy advocates.

• DBD::mysql gives mysql_init not found

  I have to install a non-admin copy of mysql and perl module DBD::mysql in my home directory. I installed mysql in ~/software/db/mysql and this works since I can start and stop the server and go to the mysql prompt. Then, I downloaded the perl module and installed it using perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=~/myperl/ LIB=~/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/ --mysql_config=/my_home/software/db/mysql/bin/mysql_config --libs=/myhome/software/db/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.a make make install I did this to use the statically linked mysql client library. perl -MDBD::mysql -e 1 gives no errors. However, when I actually try to use the module, I get /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /myhome/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so: undefined symbol: mysql_init
