• Java assert nasty side-effect - compiler bug?

  This public class test { public static void main(String[] args) { Object o = null; assert o != null; if(o != null) System.out.println("o != null"); } } prints out "o != null"; both 1.5_22 and 1.6_18. Compiler bug? Commenting out the assert fixes it. • VB.Net variable declaration

  I notice that both of these compile without any compiler warnings or errors, even with Option Strict and Option Explicit both turned on: Dim x As Exception = New Exception("this is a test") Dim y = New Exception("this is another test") My question is, is it more proper to use the first way (see variable x) or the second way (see variable y)? My guess is that VB doesn't need the As clause since the variable is being initialized in place, so the compiler can infer the type. I tend to like the first way as it just "feels" right and is more consistent with other languages like C#, just wondered if there was some good reason for one way over the other. I guess it's really personal choice.

• Making a vertically scrolling parent div which does not cause overflow of children

  I have something as follows: <div style="float: left; height: 20px; overflow-y: scroll"> <div>hello this is a test</div> <div>hello this is another test</div> <div>t1</div> <div>t2</div> <div>t3</div> </div> The parent div grows to the appropriate width to fit the largest child (which is what I want). However, the vertical scrollbar causes the inner width to be smaller, which causes the largest child to wrap. Is there a way to get the parent to grow to the width of the largest child + the width of the scroll bar? I've tried every margin trick I know, but nothing.

  Hello, I'm new to TDD approach so I'm wondering if anyone experienced wit this could enlighten me a little. I would like to get some leads how to use UML and TDD methodology together. I've been used to: Design with UML -- Generate skeleton classes (and then keep it synchronized) - Implement and finally Test. I must admit that testing part was the worst one, so I started to look for something else - TDD. So I have some general knowledge what is it about but before I proceed further, I am interested knowing how it goes together with software design especially UML. So when I first design/create test, how can UML fit in? Would it be possible to design classes first, from them create skeleton classes, from them generate Unit tests which would be "filled" before actual implementation of UML pregenerated classes, would this approach break whole TDD? Or is there any other way that would keep UML and TDD together? Thanks everyone for answer.

  Hi guys, I decided to learn HTML so I installed apache on windows vista. Everything seems to work fine; when I go to http://localhost:8080 the sample webpage installed by apache shows. Apache is configured at port 8080. So far so good. Since my DocumentRoot is c:\pub, I made another folder inside, e.g., c:\pub\test. What I'm trying to figure out is why the page at http://localhost/test:8080 cannot load? It has index.html and apache is working fine. Any ideas?

  Hello, I have some xml: <Test> <thing location="home" status="good"/> <thing location=work" status="bad"/> <thing location="mountains" status="good"/> </Test> The leaves on the TreeView are the values of the status attribute; the nodes will be the value of the location attribute. +--bad ¦.....+--work +--good .......+--home .......+--mountains Currently, I populate the TreeView (or Tab control) manually, iterating through the xml, adding the nodes to the appropriate leaf. Can this be done via databinding? I'm guessing a Converter will be involved... Thanks for any advice.

In short, if the route definition is the first in the route table, then the parameter takes its default value. But the others below don't.

• Junior software developer - How to understand web aplications in depth?

  I am currently a junior developer in web applications and specifically in asp.net mvc technology. My problem is that the c# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read pro asp.net mvc 4. However, most of the examples are about crud and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when i should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developers could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

• Can I set a property on an object that is only declared on the instance type, when I don't know the

  Let me explain. I have a List into which I am adding various ASP.NET controls. I then wish to loop through the list and set a CssClass, however not every Control supports the property CssClass. What I would like to do is test if the underlying instance type supports the CssClass property and set it, but I'm not sure how to do the conversion prior to setting the property since I don't know the type of each Control object. I know that I can use typeof or x.GetType(), but I'm not sure how to use these to convert the controls back to the instance type in order to test for and then set the property. I have the connection string with data source pointing to my machine since the database is stored on my machine temporarily. I do not have access to another machine and wanted to test the application so I remotely connected to the server to test the application and it does not connect to the server. I have TCP/IP enables, port to defaul 1433, and remote connections checked. Is there something I am missing? Please help

• Drupal Imagecache not working

  I created an Imagecache setting that just resizes to 125px wide. First issue is that the preview image is 404. Then I want to print out an image via <?php print theme('imagecache', 'imported_image', $node->picture, 'test', 'test', $attributes); ?> 'imported_image' being the preset and $node-picture is a correct path. The html prints out ok but the path it's trying load the image from does not exist. In sites/default/files/imagecache there is no folder with the name of the preset. Flushing the preset does nothing. The imagecache folder is writeable by everyone. This is on MAMP. Anyone know what the issue could be?

  Hi, I'm trying to send an email merging one document (docx) with a contacts database (via OleDB). Using MSWord2007, it seems easy (it works for easy things: name, address, ...) but I can't find how fill an query-get url string with a merge field inside an hyperlink. An hyperlink like: Click here where here is an hyperlink to http://domain.com/[email protected] where [email protected] is the address of the contact, a merge field. I've tried the special/merge fields: {HYPERLINK "http://domain.com/test.php?contact={MERGEFIELD contactEmail}" \o "Here"} but it doesn't work, sometimes it merge only the first record and then send all the mails with the same address, I got this alternating the view with ALT+F9. This support doc doesn't work for me because I don't have the complete URL in my database for each contact, and I can't change the design of the table or add a view (it's from the CRM), I don't like to do it exporting the table and adding the field.   i'm currently coding a 2D game in Java, and I would like to have some clues on how-to build this system : the screen is moving on a grander map, for instance, the screen represent 800*600 units on a 100K*100K map. When you command your unit to go to another position, the screen move on this map AND when you move your mouse on a side or another of the screen, you move the screen on the map. Not sure that i'm clear, but we can retrieve this system in most RTS games (warcraft/starcraft for example). I'm currently using Slick 2D. Any idea ? Thanks.

  Hi, I have some sort of a design problem with my Django AJAX application. I have a template where I initialize js variable from django context variable like so: var test = "{{ test }}"; This variable is than used in a number of js functions that are needed for interface to work properly. So now I'm trying to reuse some content from this page in another page that loads it dynamically on some user interaction using jQuery.load(..), and I don't see any way how I can initialize that variable, so js functions don't work now. Is there any solution for this or may be I'm doing it wrong? Thanks.

• ASP.NET site freezing up, showing odd text at top of the page while loading, on one server

  I have various servers (dev, 2 x test, 2 x prod) running the same asp.net site. The test and prod servers are in load-balanced pairs. One of these pairs is exhibiting some kind of (super) slowdown or freezing every other page load or so. Sometimes a line of text appears at the very top of the page which looks something like: 00 OK Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 01:50:09 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered_By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727 Cache-Control:private Content-Type:text/html; charset=ut (the beginning and end are "cut off".) • Use adapter pattern for coupled classes

  I need (for unit testing purposes) to create adapters for external library classes.ExchangeService and ContactsFolder are Microsoft's implementations in its' EWS library. So I created my adapters that implement my interfaces, but it seems that contactsFolder has a dependency for ExchangeService in its' constructor. The problem is that I cannot instantiate ContactsFolderAdapter without somehow accessing the actual ExchangeService instance (I see only ExchangeServiceAdapter in scope). Is there a better pattern for this that retains the adapter classes? Or should I "infect" ExchangeServiceAdapter with some kind of GetActualObject method?

• Ant ignores attempt to override the LANG environment variable

  We need to test a java build with the languages set to different values. I can manually (i.e. via export LANG=en_DK.UTF-8 and export LANG=en_DK) test that the unit tests run with the ant build script behaves differently, but I need to set the environment variable from ant. I have tried setting it using these methods (with the shell $LANG set to en_DK.UTF-8): using -D on the command line: ant -DLANG=en_DK using a build.properties file with the line LANG=en_DK in it using the following statements in the build.xml file (sorry for the formatting, I can't get SO to display it otherwise): : <property environment="ANTENV"/> <property name="ANTENV.LANG" value="en_DK"/> Using any of the three possibilities, and when run with -debug, ant reports that: Override ignored for property "LANG" What can I do to set the LANG environment variable from within ant?
