  • Uploading Files Using ASP.NET Web Forms, Generic Handler and jQuery

    In order to upload files from the client machine to the server ASP.NET developers use FileUpload server control. The FileUpload server control essentially renders an INPUT element with its type set to file and allows you to select one or more files. The actual upload operation is performed only when the form is posted to the server. Instead of making a full page postback you can use jQuery to make an Ajax call to the server and POST the selected files to a generic handler (.ashx). The generic handler can then save the files to a specified folder.   • A record point not working

    I'm trying to do an A record point to transfer the hosting of a domain from one provider to another. I don't want to change the nameservers as this will result in emails going down. The output when I dig for the domain shows the correct IP (78.46.63.87) for the new host. I know A records can take a while to propagate but Its been over 36hrs now and I still keep getting this error(below) when I try to pull the domain through as an addon domain via Cpanel on the new host. Are the old nameservers conflicting with the A record point? here's the error: Using nameservers with the following IPs: 208.80.125.4,208.80.126.4,208.80.124.4,208.94.148.4 Sorry, the domain is already pointed to an IP address that does not appear to use DNS servers associated with this server. Please transfer the domain to this servers nameservers or have your administrator add one of its nameservers to /etc/ips.remotedns and make the proper A entries on that remote nameserver.

  • Looking for full web based booking system

    I've searched around here but could not find any booking system that would suit my need. I hope maybe you can help me out. I've already seen question #11379 over here. Solutions provided there are not helping and scripts not interesting. I'm looking for a booking system that support infinite number of hotels/rooms/pricingschemes. There should be unlimited number of hotel owner/users, who can access control panel and set availability for their hotel. Or create seasonal prices and adjust them. I should be able to have 15% booking fee paid through credit cart. I can work on integration with my system, it just needs to have correct APi/functionality to support this. I love wordpress so if there are some nice plugins for that, I'm open for suggestions. But this is not a must. It should be php/mysql based as I'm not good at anything else :)

  • Recommendations for a quick and easy discussion forum installation

    Hello. I did a couple quick searches on this topic and both Google and this site yielded poor results, but I was wondering what's the quickest way to setup a discussion forum on my website. Preferably one that has a decent Admin dashboard. My website is very static (e.g. it has one index.html, a stylesheet, and a javascript) and it will most likely be hosted on GoDaddy.com. The last time I installed a discussion forum was six years ago and it was phpBB. I'm sure that's still an option, but I'm (hoping) wondering if there are better, free, and as-easy alternatives to phpBB. Thanks for your wisdom!

  • Django - how should I implement generic apps that have dependencies on other generic apps?

    Hi all, I'm using Marty Alchin's Django app that creates historical records (add, change, delete) based on models found in other Django apps (found in chapter 11 of Pro Django). Question: how do I implement this historical_records app into my other generic Django apps while still maintaining loose coupling? For example, I have a generic app (forecast) that manages a Forecast (of any other model). For one project, I'd like to use historical_records so that I can track changes to a Forecast instance. But I don't want to require all future projects that might want to use forecast to also use historical_records. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

  • Best practice for SEO "special characters" in products pages

    Whats a best practice for creating websites do to the fact that i need to enter "ö" within the content/title/meta. Should I spell it without, and just use a "normal" character or do i put in this code everywhere. or do i spell it half the time with and half the time without. whats the best practice for seo? Google takes into account user intent. Which makes things complicated(in my mind). The user will be searching without the "special characters" but because of the whole "user intent" thing, I don't know the best practice for this situation is. Should I use a mix of both spellings? Should I use the special characters in anchortext/headers/title/metadescription?

Is it possible to have a super-fast connection at home to host a high traffic website? What is the generic term for that kind of connection? What's the major drawback of hosting at home? (I have no idea of the price range but it's probably quite expensive) Do you have to be a company to have the right to own such a connection?

  • Blocking path scanning

    I'm seeing in my access log a number of request very suspicious: /i /im /imaa /imag /image /images /images/d /images/di /images/dis They part from a known resource (in the above example /images/disrupt.jpg). All comming from same IP. Requests varies from 1/sec to 10/sec, seems somewhat random. It's obviously they are trying to find something and seems they are using a script. How do I block this kind of behaviour? I though of blocking the IP request, at least for a given time. Keeping in mind that: Request intervals seems legitimate (at least I think so). I don't want to end blocking a search engine bot, which may find 404 urls too (and that's a different problem, I know). ¿Do they use always same IP?

    I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

    We are 3 persons trying to build a large website which will be available in 3 languges. However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. But we studied computer science and we have an idea but we found that this is the best place to ask the question and expect the right answer from you. Should we use ASP.NET for example? or PHP?     I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code.     Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!)     I am having a difficult time understanding Facebook's internal "e-commerce microcosm" and what it allows Facebook App developers to do (and what it restricts them from doing). Two use cases: I'm an e-com retailer selling clothes and coffee mugs (real-world goods) on my website; I want to write a Facebook App that allows Facebook users to buy my real-world goods from inside of Facebook using real money ($ USD) I'm highschool student trying to raise money for my senior class trip and want to build a Facebook App that allows Facebook users to donate to our class using real money ($ USD) Are these two scenarios possible? If not, why (what Facebook policies prohibit me from doing so)? If so, what APIs do I use: Payments or Credits? And how (specifically) would it work? Do Facebook Users have to first buy "credits" (which are mapped to $ USD values under the hood) and pay/donate with credits, or can they whip out their credit card and pay/donate right through my Facebook App? I think that last question really summarizes my confusion: can Facebook users enter their credit card info directly into Facebook Apps, or do you have to go through Payments/Credits APIs as a "middleman"?

  • What kind of hosting do I need?

    I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances.   • 'Buy the app' landing page implementations: redirect or javascript popup?

    My site (using Django) has an app that I'm trying to push - I currently have a piece of middleware that redirects the user to a page advertising the app if they're accessing the page on the iPhone, then setting a cookie so that the user isn't bugged by the message every time they visit the site. This works fine, however checking the page with the mobile Googlebot checker shows that the Googlebot gets stuck in the redirect (since it doesn't store cookies) and therefore won't index the proper content. So, I'm trying to think of an alternative implementation that won't hurt the site's Google ranking and won't have any other adverse effects. I've considered a couple of options: Redirect (the current solution), but don't redirect if the user agent matches the Googlebot's UA string. This would be ideal, however I'm not sure if Google like their bot being treated differently from other users, and I'm afraid the site's ranking may be somehow penalised if I go ahead with this. Use a Javascript popup instead of a redirect. This would make sure the Googlebot finds the content it needs, however I envision this approach causing compatibility issues with the myriad mobile devices/browsers out there, and may affect the page load time. How valid are these options? And is there a better option for implementing this feature out there? I've tried researching this topic but surprisingly can't find any reputable-looking blog posts that explore this topic.

    When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. Using cmd.exe or cygstart.For example, to start default sqlplus.exe to connect to default local instance. $ cmd /c "start sqlplus sys/oracle as sysdba" 2nd example. To start sqlplus in 2nd Oracle home and to connect to non-default local instance. $ ORACLE_SID=orcl cygstart /cygdrive/g/app/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/BIN/sqlplus scott I hope this tip helps reducing your DBA time.

  • Storing data offline with javascript

    My question is about storing data offline and potentially whether I will need to bring in an outside programmer or could this be learned within a few weeks? The website I am working on will have an interface where users will login and go through a series of quizzes in the form of checkbox, drop down menus, and others. Each page/quiz area could have 20-100 total checkboxes in a series of 3-5 rows because of the comprehensive nature of course. This I can do - I know how to code the quiz and return a correct or incorrect answer based on each individual checkbox and present a cumulative score (ie: you got 57% correct). The issue lies in the fact that I would like to save the users results and keep them informed of their progress. When they complete all of the quizzes, I would like to have a visual output of their performance in each area. Storing the output from their results offline is where I think I may run into a problem with my lack of coding experience. I would also like to have a sidebar with their progress of each section (10-15) with a green percentage completion bar or a % correct which would draw from this. I have never had to code something that stores information like this offline - so back to my question - would it be better to learn the language needed or bring in a coder/developer for the back end stuff.

    I really do not want to install Linux at the moment, I would have to borrow a USB key, move files, format it, flash it, format it again, move files back, give it back... What would you recommend that is lightweight, easily and cleanly uninstallable afterwards (will install Linux when I get a new DVD-ROM, which will be in ~2 weeks), that also supports PHP and SQL? To be precise, I want to install a Wordpress blog, a few plugins, etc, and develop a theme. If there is no such thing for Windows (7, x64 if that matters), let me know too, I will borrow the USB key then (even though it's a pain).

  • How much effort is involved in moving a WordPress site to a private server? [on hold]

    I work in tech, but am on the business side. I have a WordPress site that I would like to move to a personal server and associate with a new domain name. I already have a server (actually, a friend is letting me use his) and the domain name. A friend-of-a-friend, who claims to be an IT pro, has agreed to help, but now is asking for what feels like a lot of money for what he says is a pretty time-intensive job. This doesn't sound right to me, so I thought I would ask here: Would it take months or even days to move the content, and why would it have to be moved in stages? The blog currently uses a basic template and has about 1000 posts. How much effort is really involved in moving a WordPress site from one server to another? Can anyone explain the process? Would it just make more sense to point the domain name at the existing WordPress blog, and pay the nominal yearly fee? I appreciate any answers you can provide.

    I am looking at getting a VPS with RackSRV, and they don't sell domain names, but are happy to set it up after I get one elsewhere. Can anyone recommend somewhere I can purchase just the domain, and not have any hassles moving it afterwards? (Or can I just purchase the domain and make it point at the RackSRV ip address, while still using the domain sellers' control panel? I don't really understand that part of it enough! :)) I want the domain name registered in my name, ideally with myself as the technical and administrative contacts for simple transfers.
