• First Time Architecturing?

  I was recently given the task of rebuilding an existing RIA. The new RIA that I've designed is based on Silverlight, with a WCF service to connect to MS SQL Server. This is my first time doing something like this, so I'm not sure how to design the entire thing. Basically, the client can look through graphs of "stocks" (allowing the client to choose different time periods, settings, etc). I've written the whole application essentially, but I'm not sure how to put it together. The graphs are supposed to be directly based on the database, and to create the datapoints on the graph, some calculations need to be done (not very expensive ones). The problem I'm having is to decide where to put the calculations (client or serverside? Or half and half?) What factors should I look for to help me decide where the calculations should be done? And how can I go about optimizing this (caching, etc)? Obviously this is a very broad subject, so I'm not expecting an immediate answer, but any help/pointing in the right direction/resources would be appreciated.

• Radio buttons change variable in JavaScript

  I have two fields which calculate a total, but I have a radio button pair that determines a variable within the equation. The setFrom() and setTo() are functions that are called based on user selection via the GUI widget. The root of my problem is that 'from' and 'to' are variables. In my compute member function I need to pick a type (A, B, etc.) based on the values of 'from' and 'to'. The only way I know how to do what I need to do is to use switch statements, but that's extremely tedious in my case and I would like to avoid. Is there anyway to convert the error line to a constant-expression?

• Euro character messed up during FTP transfer

  My customer is using a very outdated ecommerce management system on my hosting service. For that product, no support is being provided anymore by the vendor. Brief explanation: the shop website, that claims to run under LAMP stack, is built by an old Visual Basic Windows application running on MS Access. The user constructs the shop, defines the HTML template, adds products and categories, etc. Then the VB exe builds the PHP pages (one for each template page) and the SQL script to run on MySQL. It also uploads everything via FTP and runs the installation/upgrade script on its own. The problem Browsing the website, many products' descriptions are cut before the euro sign. For example, what was supposed to be "Product price €1000" becomes "Product price" The analysis MySQL contains a cutted description until the € sign, so it's not PHP fault The Access databases contain full description with € sign, so it's not fault of the webmaster writing bad description or eDisplay cutting them The SQL that will run once the site gets uploaded, stored on my local machine before upload, contains the € sign The same script, after being FTPed by eDisplay and opened with nano from SSH, shows the € sign messed up like this: ^À vsftpd log reports (obfuscated for privacy) Sat Dec 15 11:16:57 2012 22 xxx.xxx.128.13 1112727 /srv/www/domains/xxxxxx.it/htdocs/db.sql b _ i r xxxxxxx ftp 0 * c which seems to be a binary transfer (and also a huge security vulnerability because you can download the whole database from unauthenticated HTTP) The eDisplay internal FTP client provides no option for ascii/binary transfer modes [Add] Trying to manually upload the SQL file via SFTP shows messing up euro [Add2] Trying to manually upload using Xftp client with explicit ASCII mode doesn't fix too It looks like the file gets uploaded as binary. • Need help/suggestions for creating fantasy sports scoring databases and queries

  I'm trying to create a website for my friends and I to keep track of fantasy sports scoring. So far, I've been doing the calculations and storage in Excel, which is very tedious. I'm trying to make it more simplified and automated through a SQL database that I can then wrap a web app around to enter daily stat updates. It's premised on our participation in another commercial site where we trade virtual shares of athletes, and thus acquire an "ownership percentage" in each athlete. For instance, if there are 100 shares of AROD, and I own 10 shares, then I own 10%. It then applies this to traditional baseball rotisserie scoring. So, for instance, if AROD has 1 HR today, then his adjusted HR stat would be 1.10. If he also has 2 RBI's, then his adjusted RBI stat today would be 2.20, based on (2 x 1.10)(1 to normalize the stat, and the .10 to represent the ownership percentage). All the stats for my team would then be summed each day and added to my stat history to come to an aggregated total. After that, points are allocated based on the ranking of each participant in each category at the end of the day. E.g. if there are 10 participants, and I have the highest total aggregate number of Adjusted HR's, then I get 10 pts. The points are then summed across the different stat categories to come up with a total point ranking for that day. An added difficulty is that ownership %'s can change on a daily basis. So far, in playing around with different schema, I don't know that having a separate table for each athlete's stats and each player's ownership %'s is the wisest choice. It seems to me that simply having two tables, one that contains the daily stat information for each athlete, and another that shows the ownership % of each player. My friend suggested using a start and end date for each ownership % to represent the potential daily changes in this category. I'm admittedly new to database development, so any suggestions on query code would be appreciated.

  Hi, i have declared an entity the following way: public class MyEntity { @PrimaryKey @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY) private Long id; @Persistent private String text; //getters and setters } Now I want to retrieve the objects using the id. I tried to manage it from the Google Appengine Data Viewer with "SELECT * FROM MyEntity Where id = 382005" or via a query in a servlet. I get no results returned. But i know for sure that the object with the id exists (i made a jsp which queries all objects in the db and displays them in the db). So what is wrong in my query? Am I querying the wrong field? The Google Appengine Data Viewer names the field "ID/name" and it has the value "id=382005". Do I have to query with this names? I've tried but it didn't work out :(

• How to limit TCP writes to particular size and then block untlil the data is read

  {Qt 4.7.0 , VS 2010} I have a Server written in Qt and a 3rd party client executable. Qt based server uses QTcpServer and QTcpSocket facilities (non-blocking). Going through the articles on TCP I understand the following: the original implementation of TCP mentioned the negotiable window size to be a 16-bit value, thus maximum being 65535 bytes. But implementations often used the RFC window-scale-extension that allows the sliding window size to be scalable by bit-shifting to yield a maximum of 1 gigabyte. This is implementation defined. This could have resulted in majorly different window sizes on receiver and sender end as the server uses Qt facilities without hardcoding any window size limit. Client 1st asks for all information it can based on the previous messages from the server before handling the new (accumulating) incoming messages. So at some point Server receives a lot of messages each asking for data of several MB's. This the server processes and puts it into the sender buffer. Client however is unable to handle the messages at the same pace and it seems that client’s receiver buffer is far smaller (65535 bytes maybe) than sender’s transmit window size. The messages thus get accumulated at sender’s end until the sender’s buffer is full too after which the TCP writes on sender would block. This however does not happen as sender buffer is much larger. Hence this manifests as increase in memory consumption on the sender’s end. To prevent this from happening, I used Qt’s socket’s waitForBytesWritten() with timeout set to -1 for infinite waiting period. This as I see from the behaviour blocks the thread writing TCP data until the data has actually been sensed by the receiver’s window (which will happen when earlier messages have been processed by the client at application level). This has caused memory consumption at Server end to be almost negligible. is there a better alternative to this (in Qt) if i want to restrict the memory consumption at server end to say x MB's? Also please point out if any of my understandings is incorrect.

• iPhone -trouble with a loading data from webservice into a tableview

  I am using a Window based application and then loading up my initial navigationview based controller. After loading it if the user is not registered/ does not have a credentials present then it takes the user to a login view controller . loginViewController *sampleView = [[loginViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"loginViewController" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController presentModalViewController:sampleView animated:YES]; [sampleView release]; then right after that i try to load the table with data that i get from a webservice using asiHTTP .. for this question lets say it takes 3 seconds time to get the data and then deserialize it . now... my question is it works out okey in the later runs as I store the username and password in a seure location... but in the first instance.... i am not able to get the data to laod to the tableview... I have tried a lot of things... 1. Initially the data fetch methods was in a diffrent methods.. so i thought that might be the problem as then moved it the same place as the tbleviewController(navigationController) 2. I event put in the Reload data at the end of the functionality for the data parsing and deserialization... nothing happens. 3. i did not understand the concept of @property and alll.... 4. The screen is black screen with nothing displayed on it for a good 5 seconds in the consecutive launches of the app.... so could we have something like a MBPorgressHUD implemented for the same. could any one please help for these scenarios and guidance as to what paths to take from here...

• Signed_request lost in ASP.NET session, confusing my website

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 3 website which is available both from a specific public url, and I'm also making be available as a Facebook App. Inside my website logic, in some places I have to determine whether the current request is from the Facebook-app, or from the public website, because I want to display content based on this environment. So, for eg. if the user is using my site as a facebook-app, then I want to display a picture, and if the user is using my site normally, then I don't wanna display a picture. To determine whether I'm from a Facebook app, I check the "signed_request" in the HttpContext.Request, and store it in the HttpSession to be available for my other actions, not just for that action (url) which is defined for my Facebook app. So when a child-action is executed, I can determine based on the Session, that the website is used as a FB-app or not. The problem happens, when the Session times out, because then althought the logic is still running inside Facebook, my logic thinks it's not inside Facebook. Any advice?

• smart phone UI limitations

  I would like to know, what limitations there are for how far one can go in terms of replacing UI components of current touch screen smart phones, in particular iPhone, Blackberry and android based phones. What I would like to do is create a custom UI for dialing out and incoming calls. I have some experience with Blackberry development. The theme builder for it, can be used to customize certain items on the incoming call screen, but it doesn't look like that you can increase the size of answer button. I know Blackberry also gives you access to all the phone APIs, but I'm not sure that you can create your own UI that can gain preference over the Blackberry incoming call screen. And if you try to customize the incoming call screen by adding any buttons to it, they would be rendered as pictures. I could possibly design a complete UI for android, since different manufactures have different UI for android based phones. Can I do what I want to do using iPhone, Blackberry or android? Or any other phone for that matter? I am guessing may be for Nokia phones using Qt, but I prefer the 3 platforms I listed. Thanks for all your help.

• UINavigationController from scratch?

  I have a view based app that works well. (In other words, I'm not going to start over with a Navigation-Based App template.) It's an immersive app of sorts and I'm trying to add a Table View that loads in a new view when a button is pressed. The loading the nib part works, but I can't seem to be able to add a navigation controller to the new view. I want to see a navigation bar on top with a done button and an edit button. Also, I want to the Table View entries to be empty. I added a new file like so: File-> New File -> UINavigationController subclass. I checked the UITableViewController Subclass and With XIB for user interface. All I see when the view is pulled up is a blank Table View. I am able to customize things in the view controller. What can I do to make the table show a navigation bar and be editable? I need some direction here please. EDIT: I'm working with the latest Public SDK. (XCode 3.2.2)

• Random select is not always returning a single row.

  The intention of following (simplified) code fragment is to return one random row. Unfortunatly, when we run this fragment in the query analyzer, it returns between zero and three results. As our input table consists of exactly 5 rows with unique ID's and as we perform a select on this table where ID equals a random number, we are stumped that there would ever be more than one row returned. Note: among other things, we already tried casting the checksum result to an integer with no avail. • How to eliminate authentication on my MVC app that is called from asp.net forms app

  Curious what recommendations anyone has. I have an existing asp.net forms application that does a Forms Authentication and has identity impersonate turned on. The application has a link to a questionnaire that I would like to develop separately in an asp.net MVC application, but I don't want the users to click on the link and be prompted for a username and password, I would like them to be able seamless start filling out the questionnaire. Is there a way to somehow transfer authentication from one .net app to another? I would like to be able to pass stuff like UserRole. What's the best way to do this?

• Accessing vars from another clojure namespace?

  In my main namespace, I have a top level var named "settings" which is initialized as an empty {}. My -main fn sets the contents of settings using def and conj based on some command line args (different database hosts for production/development, etc). I'm trying to access the contents of this map from another namespace to pull out some of the settings. When I try to compile with lein into an uberjar, I get a traceback saying "No such var: lb/settings". What am I missing? Is there a more idiomatic way to handle app wide settings such as these? Is it safe to use "def" inside of -main like I am, or should I be use an atom or ref to make this threadsafe? Thanks! (ns main (:use ...) • What kind of data do I pass into a Django Model.save() method?

  Lets say that we are getting POSTed a form like this in Django: rate=10 items= [23,12,31,52,83,34] The items are primary keys of an Item model. I have a bunch of business logic that will run and create more items based on this data, the results of some db lookups, and some business logic. I want to put that logic into a save signal or an overridden Model.save() method of another model (let's call it Inventory). The business logic will run when I create a new Inventory object using this form data. Inventory will look like this: class Inventory(models.Model): picked_items = models.ManyToManyField(Item, related_name="items_picked_set") calculated_items = models.ManyToManyField(Item, related_name="items_calculated_set") rate = models.DecimalField() ... other fields here ... New calculated_items will be created based on the passed in items which will be stored as picked_items. My question is this: is it better for the save() method on this model to accept: the request object (I don't really like this coupling) the form data as arguments or kwargs (a list of primary keys and the other form fields) a list of Items (The caller form or view will lookup the list of Items and create a list as well as pass in the other form fields) some other approach? I know this is a bit subjective, but I was wondering what the general idea is. I've looked through a lot of code but I'm having a hard time finding a pattern I like.

  I have two entities(actually more but it doenst matter) Exam and Exam_Normals Its a oneToMany relationship... The problem is that i need a primary key for Exams_Normals PK (Exam_ID Item) Item should be 1 2 3 4 5 etc.... But cant achieve it getting errors An alternative would be to: I cound use an IDENTITY and a ManyToOne relationship at Exam_Normals but that should be like PK(Exam_Normals_ID) and a reference to Exam and an extra collumn Item to keep an order.. SO 3 collumns But to avoid the alternative tried I tried with @IdClass and got errors Tried @EmbeddedID everything nothing works Any idea??

• Dynamically adjust padding on an image?

  What I'm basically attempting to do is dynamically change a padding value for a scrubber image based on player position data provided by an app. I have been able to leverage the provided number to dynamically increase the width of a progress overlay image and create a progress bar, but I would like a scrubber diamond at the leading edge of the progress bar. To do this, I have positioned the scrubber diamond at the same starting point as the progress overlay and would like to increase the padding on the diamond at the same rate as the width is increasing for the progress overlay, allowing them to pace each other with the scrubber diamond moving as the song plays. Any help with the script necessary to manipulate padding-left dynamically would be very much appreciated. var progress = Ecoute.playerPosition(); var width = 142.5 / length * progress + 1.63; EcouteSel('Progression').width = width.toString(); EcouteSel('Scrubber').style('padding-left', 'width'); We define progress as the player position, width as a function of the progress and then apply that function to the ID applied to the progress over lay image. But how do I accomplish that for padding-left? style.paddingLeft ...based functions have broken the controller outright. I'm at a loss and any help would be appreciated.

Given the table above, I would like to duplicate a record (but give it a different id), in a way that new fields added to the DB and the Linq dbml file at a later date will still get duplicated with out having to change that code that duplicates the record. ie I don't want to write newRecord.Foo = currentRecord.Foo; for all of the fields on the table.

  Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise. I am wondering why even a single delete statement of this store procedure will cause deadlock if executed by multiple threads at the same time? For the delete statement, Param1 is a column of table FooTable, Param1 is a foreign key of another table (refers to another primary key clustered index column of the other table). There is no index on Param1 itself for table FooTable. • Serving .docx files through Php

  Hi, I'm having issues when attempting to serve a .docx file using Php. When uploading the file I detect the file mime type and upload the file using the file with the correct extension based on the mime type; e.g. below: application/msword - doc application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document - docx When attempting to serve the files for download, I do the reverse in detecting the extension and serving based on the mime type e.g. public static function fileMimeType($extention) { if(!is_null($extention)) { switch($extention) { case 'txt': return 'text/plain'; break; case 'odt': return 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text'; break; case 'doc': return 'application/msword'; break; case 'docx': return 'application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document'; break; case ('jpg' || 'jpeg'): return 'image/jpeg'; break; case 'png': return 'image/png'; break; case 'pdf': return 'application/pdf'; break; default: break; } } } All files appear to download correctly and open fine but when attempting to open a docx file, Word (on multiple files) throws a error stating the file is corrupt. So each comment may have a parent comment etc. Given table "Comments": CommentId - int - identity autoincrement PostId - int ParentId - int Comment - string Is there a way to get a list of comments for a given article ordered by CreateDate and ParentId? Or maybe there is a better table design you may suggest. What is the best design when inserting Post comments like this? I'm using Entity framework. thanks
