I have a toy webframework in cl that creates and manages web pages with instances of classes that represent the html tags and their properties, and as they are supposed to make an html page, they have children in a slot called children. so I was thinking how much a user's session will cost the server if I take this approach.   Ok so I'm trying to access the first element of a JSP list, here's what I've come up with so far without any kind of luck: onclick="alert('<%=list[0]%>');" What's the best approach to access the first element and eventually to pass it to a javascript variable/function ? I've heard that the <% %> tags are deprecated and some are suggesting relaying on JSTL/EL how can one use those without having to iterate the entire list and put a breakpoint for the iterators ?

For database simplicity it uses a where clause on the bag to filter the joining table. this works well until I start to test and I use the hbm file to create a database from the generated schema. The root and user tags columns aren't created. In the hbm file how do I define these two columns so they are generated in the schema?
