• Setting up a PC for the Kids

  I recently finished building a new PC from scratch; and then I decided to treat myself to a new widescreen monitor. I'm left with a bit of a conundrum with what to do with my old box. I'm considering a few options such as a file server, putting Linux on it, putting it elsewhere in the house or giving it to a member of the family and so on. But to be honest, I don't really think it would get much use. I've started thinking about putting together something for my kids. The oldest is coming up on 4 in a couple of months and he's used my PC and Macbook (supervised!) before for playing jigzaw puzzles, babysmash and so forth. He's also uses the computer at his nursery (Kindergarden for North Americans!). So, its got me thinking about setting something up for him (bonus for his brother who is 2). I was wondering what others had done when trying to put together something for their kids? Some points for consideration: Operating System? Software? Anti-virus Internet (probably blocking?) Hardware (I've seen some keyboards designed with kids in mind)

• Windows 2003 DNS or IIS6 Problem?

  Weird DNS problem... We have an intranet located internally on a windows 2003 / iis6 server - DNS handled internally on another windows 2003 server. The intranet, amongst other functions, hosts a ecommerce store I wrote that sells nike apparel embroidered with our company logo. Up until recently, it would send an email to payroll and the cost would be deducted from the employees paycheck. lets say this store is located at http://mydomain.com (only available internally) Now, we've been told by the accountants that we can no longer auto deduct from payroll and the employee needs to pay with a credit card or cash. So i went to thawte.com and ordered an SSL cert to be on the safe side (even though the CC gateway is secure) and they told me i need to drop the .com from the domain name Not wanting to mess with a system thats perfectly functional, i created another DNS entry that just points to mydomain (no .com) and left the old one in there. so they would go to http://mydomain On my Mac (OS X 10.6) i can hit either one just fine On Windows XP / Windows XP Embedded or Windows 7 (the vast majority of the pc's on our network) http://mydomain - returns nothing http://mydomain.com still works https://mydomain.com works but says the cert is invalid (as it should, it was issued to mydomain - not mydomain.com) my question is: why does it work on my Mac and not on a Windows PC (i get dhcp and dns just like any other pc on the network) and will removing the .com one from the DNS server resolve this? I've done all the usual attempts - ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /renew and release even going so far as to stop and restart DNS client on my Windows 7 box; rebooting and shutting down - adding a regedit entry something along the lines of SecureResponses and rebooting nothing works... I think its the .com and the not conflicting in DNS but i'm not sure - and why not on OS X We're closed on sunday and i'm going to remote in and see what happens if i remove the .com from DNS but any other ideas? -Mario

• BSOD trying to migrate Windows XP from a physical to a virtual machine

  I am attempting to migrate a Windows XP Home installation from a physical machine to a virtual machine. The physical machine has two hard disks; the first is 250GB containing the "C:", the second is 1TB containing "D:". I'd like to create a new virtual machine stored on the D:, which is a copy of the Windows XP Home installation that is currently on the C:. (This will leave the 250GB drive clear for me to install a fresh copy of Windows 7, and still be able to access the old XP installation if necessary.) The first method I tried was to follow the instructions here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows I booted up from an Ubuntu Live CD in order to execute the Linux commands whilst the Windows system wasn't running. With this method the virtual machine would always blue screen on startup with a "STOP 0x0000007B" message. The instructions above say to try a "repair install" using the Windows XP disc. Unfortunately for me my XP disc is scratched and will not boot so I was unable to try a repair install. The second method I tried was to use "VMWare Converter Standalone Client". This tool executed without any errors, but again produced a virtual machine that blue screens on startup with the same "STOP" message. Are there any other methods to move the Windows XP installation into a virtual machine? I think next I will try some more manual process to create the cloned virtual machine. I think I will try installing a fresh copy of Windows XP to a virtual machine, then once that is booting OK I will ntfsclone the source C: partition over the top. Perhaps this will fix the booting problems if the issue is related to the MBR or partition table in some way.

• Upgrading Visio 2000 to Visio 2007

  I have Microsoft Visio 2000 SR 1, and recently purchased Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2007 with the understanding (supported by the product info and some other research) that I'd be able to upgrade. However, when I install 2007, it tells me it can't find a previous install of Visio, but... it's right there! Here's the exact message: "Setup can't find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer. If Office is installed on a disk or network share, click the browse button to select the appropriate disk or share... (etc.)" No matter which directory or drive I pick (various Office installs, the old Visio install, various subdirectories) it gives the following message: "The path you have chosen does not point at a qualifying upgradeable product. Click 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to quit setup." Any ideas? This is a legit copy of Visio 2007 (purchased from Amazon) and the copy of Visio 2000 is legit as well. I'm not sure what exactly the installer is looking for that it would consider a "qualifying upgradeable product". A specific file?

• Installing ubuntu 12.04, installs but does not boot after it asks me to remove the CD

  I'm Trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. It had an old copy of Windows 7 on it I tried to reformat the hard drive for a fresh install of Ubuntu but I think I messed up the partitions in some way that prevents it from fully loading. I'm able to complete the install fine and use guided partitioning so it should be happy but when it gets about 90% through at the part that ejects the cd and restarts the system it fails. After ejecting the CD and restarting it just loads up the bios lenovo splash screen then purple then black. I can hear a sound from my speakers like some notification sound but there is no text on my screen. I've since gone back in under Rescue System to try and reconfigure the partitions hoping that it will fix it and i've tried several combinations. Currently it's SCST1 (0,0,0) (sda) - 500.1 GB ATA WDC WD5000AAkKX-0 #1 100.0 MB K biosgrub #2 494.1 GB B K ext4 / #3 5.9 GB F swap swap 8.2 kb FREE SPACE I'm not sure if I need to set the ext4 to contain the boot flag but if I don't include at least one partition with the boot flag enabled it complains saying that "The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partitionshould be marked for use as an "EFI boot Partition" and should be at least 35 MB in size. Note that this is not hte same as a partition mounted on /boot" Like I said it seems to have installed all of the actual data from the CD it's just not properly booting for some reason

• EFI pxe network boot error

  Asking this on both [serverfault][1] and [superuser][2]. When attempting to network boot RHEL 5.4 on an old ia64 machine I get the following error : ![alt text][3] So I've basically followed the tutorial here : [http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/doc/suse/sles9/adminguide-sles9/ch04s03.html][4] DHCPD,TFTPD etc are already setup and working with standard x86 PXE clients. I've unpacked the boot.img file into /tftpboot/ia64/ and passed the path to the elilo.efi file via DHCP with the filename ""; option. Changing this filename generates a PXE file not found error (see below). So I assume that PXE has found the file... ![alt text][5] The only thing wrong I can find in the logs is : Jan 6 19:49:31 dhcphost in.tftpd[31379]: tftp: client does not accept options Any ideas? • What is the best / latest software to convert DVD recorder disc to YouTube?

  I recorded some Wii gameplay to a DVD-R using a DVD recorder, and tried using Handbrake to convert it to YouTube compatible format. Basically, it needs resizing to 16:9, and selecting 00:03 to 3:10 of the chapter (out of the 7 minutes). It seems Handbrake can't do it for 480p... and if using AutoGK and then VirtualDub to resize and do video time selection, it feels so old school (autogk not updated since 2005)... Windows Movie Maker seems like 15fps video quality... Is there a way to do it nicely? Details if using Handbrake: I can't find a way to convert a DVD recorded video which is 720 x 480 (Wii Gameplay in 16 : 9 ratio) into 852 x 480... It seems that the only possible resize is to shrink but not to expand? It is fine to make it 720 x 406... except YouTube won't be able to show it as 480p... If it can be made 852 x 480, then YouTube can at least show it as 480p (besides 360p and 240p)... is there any way to do it? thanks.

• Network connection to Firebird 2.1 became slow after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04

  We've got a setup that we're using for different clients : a program connecting to a Firebird server on a local network. So far we mostly used 32bit processors running Ubuntu LTS (recently upgraded to 10.04). Now we introduced servers running on 64bit processors, running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. Suddenly some queries run slower than they used to. In short: running the query locally works fine on both 64bit and 32bit servers, but when running the same queries over the network the 64bit server is suddenly much slower. We did a few checks with both local and remote connections to both 64bit and 32bit servers, using identical databases and identical queries, running in Flamerobin. Running the query locally takes a negligible amount of time: 0.008s on the 64bit server, 0.014s on the 32bit servers. So the servers themselves are running fine. Running the queries over the network, the 64bit server suddenly needs up to 0.160s to respond, while the 32bit server responds in 0.055s. So the older servers are twice as fast over the network, in spite of the newer servers being twice as fast if run locally. Apart from that the setup is identical. All servers are running the same installation of Ubuntu 10.04, same version of Firebird and so on, the only difference is that some are 64 and some 32bit. Any idea?? I tried to google it, but I couldn't find any complains that Firebird 64bit is slower than Firebird 32bit, except that the Firebird 2.1 change log mentions that there's a new network API which is twice as fast, as soon as the drivers are updated to use it. So I could imagine that the 64bit driver is still using the old API, but that's a bit of a stretch, I guess. Thanx in advance for any replies! :)

• ASUS P8B WS - Endless Reboots

  I am running a Intel XEON 1245 with 4GBx2 Kingston Memory ECC Unbuffered DDR3 on an ASUS P8B WS motherboard. BIOS Version 0904 x64. This system is a little over a month old. It is running Ubuntu 11.10. This evening I found the machine turned off. When I tried to restart it, it would POST and stop at the GRUB screen. When I selected Ubuntu and hit enter within 2-3 seconds the would shutdown and restart. If I stayed at the GRUB screen and did nothing the system would not cut out. I tried booting off a USB stick and again 2-3 seconds after selecting 'Try Ubuntu without Installing' the machine will cut power and reboot. Things I have tried so far: Resetting the BIOS using the on board jumper Resetting the BIOS settings to default Disconnecting all external hardware - except keyboard & monitor Booting with 1 stick of RAM - I tried different single sticks Ensured that onboard EPU and GPU boost switches are in the off position. I am running a Memtest86 right now and it has been running for 38+ minutes. This is not an OS problem or an overheating issue (I have a CoolerMaster HAF Case with 3 fans besides the CPU fan) I am at a loss as to what to try next. I think the BIOS is mis-configured somehow but I don't know what to look for.

• Getting an error when mounting LVM snapshot

  I have migrated a file based Xen guest to LVM using dd bs=1M if=/dev/zero of=/dev/vg00/vm10 qemu-img convert ~/vm10.qcow2 -O raw /dev/vg00/vm10 and changed the Xen domain file for the VM to use the LV instead of the old file.   This issue has been occupying my work for the last few days and I will be understating when I say its driven me up the blasted walls. Essentially, I can ping and tracert the domain jnrcs.org and the subdomains mail.jnrcs.org and mail.jordanredcrescent.org. All three mentioned point to ip address 212.38.147.97. About 4 days ago, when we registered the domain "jnrcs.org" suddenly all external connection to the mail server from outside was lost. Not just mail, but other http based port-forwarded or natted services (such as camera surveillance and pbx services). • Computer speakers receive radio station signal

  I have a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers where each speaker and the source plug into the subwoofer. I'm using a Griffin Firewave with output from my MacBook Pro, and output from my custom-built desktop with a switch in the middle (built it myself out of an old Belkin A/B parallel switch). Recently, I've noticed that I can hear a local Punjabi radio station being picked up by my speakers, and the volume of this interference increases as I increase the volume of the speakers. I'm fairly sure that this radio station is at the low-end of the FM spectrum, below 90MHz (or it may be at the high end, above 105MHz, my memory isn't infallible). It gets quite annoying as I can't put my audio very loud without the interference. I've tried to put a ferrite core on the input cable just before the 3.5mm jacks plug into the subwoofer. I don't know if putting the same core around all three of the cables (green, black, orange) would negate the effects, but I'm assuming not. There has been no change. Is there any reason why this would be happening? I'm assuming the interference is coming somewhere between the FireWave and the subwoofer, because the noise gets amplified with volume increases. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

  We're having an issue on an apache server where every 15 to 20 minutes it stops serving PHP requests entirely. On occasions it will return a 503 error, other times it will recover enough to serve the page but only after a delay of a minute or more. Static content is still served during that time. • Smart Array P400 battery failure

  The P400 Smart Array controller in my HP DL380G5 is indicating: Battery Status: Failed, Replace Battery 1 in the System Management Homepage. Also the IML indicates: POST Error: 1794-Drive Array - Array Accelerator Battery Charge Low I do have several replacement batteries (actually, several controllers including batteries) lying around at work but never had to actually replace one. I am wondering if the battery replacement (swap) could be done hot or if I need to take down my server to do the battery replacement. I have replaced other spare parts like fans and drives before and all those can be replaced hot. I just don't know about the battery of the P400 Smart Array controller. Any help would be appreciated. EDIT1 For those interested: straight from the horse's mouth: With thanks to Frands Hansen pointing it out here. EDIT2 In the end I did just power down, to be on the safe side and because the manual says so, and replace the battery. Couldn't be easier. Unplugged the old one of the end of the cable (not the end connected to the controller) and reconnected a spare one. The replaced battery is now in the server for about an hour and currently (still) recharging. I'm assuming all will end wel.

  elloo, i have some old php scripts which runs on php-5.2.x and the current server has php-5.3.x. to get around this problem,i have got two options one is to downgrade php-5.3.x or install php-5.2.x and php-5.3.x at the same time where php-5.2.x serve cgi script. i have decided go for the second option i have followed this tutorial and i can get most of it working however except execution of shell script which selects php-cgi version. i cannot get apache to execute this script. how do i get apache to execute #!/bin/sh # you can change the PHP version here. version="5.2.6" # php.ini file location, */php-5.2.6/lib equals */php-5.2.6/lib/php.ini. My experience thus far is this: Set up the Drobo Dashboard software (hereinafter called simply 'Dashboard') on my WinXP machine, which is hard-wired to the network to do the data migration from my NAS-that's-being-replaced (a 250G SimpleShare which works well enough but I was always afraid of losing the one disk). The Dashboard seems to work ok, except that the DroboCopy function doesn't work at all. This is the backup solution, which I can configure, and if I launch it (e.g. to back up from the old NAS to the Drobo) it spins the NAS, seeking the drive all over hell and creation, until finally giving up an hour+ later with zero files copied. Selecting only a subset of the data yields the same effect albeit more quickly. On my Mac I installed the Dashboard software too, since most of my fiddling with the device will be from my couch in the living room. Finder connects to the box just fine, fwiw, but Dashboard just sits there, "waiting for connection." This is considerably more bothersome than the above paragraph, but I figured I'd give whatever information I have. Drobo is insisting that I send them this "Debug Log" file that their software generates. Does anyone know what's in it? It's encrypted and they won't tell me, which spooks me just a bit; not like I'm terribly concerned about privacy but I don't want to be sending personal information out to every clown who says they "need" it in order to help me. thanks a ton, -tom!

• Digital Asset Management, iPhoto / Aperture server... alternative

  Afternoon, Clients, 10 : All Apples running either Leopard or Snow Leopard Server : Snow Leopard server, (and I have a old Dell Poweredge 650 at home running Gentoo 2.6, if anybody as a Linux solution). The situation: I work in small design company with 8 people, at present we are looking to consolidate all our image files onto one location, at present we each use our preferred single user DAM solution, be it, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto/Aperture (some don't bother at all) The filetypes commonly used are .psd, .pdf, .eps, .tiff, .jpg and RAW image files. Ideally what is needed: Centralised on one server, but allows us to search via spotlight (not essential, but would be nice) Include searchable metadata information such as date, location, title Open-source or as low cost as possibly Allow simultaneous users to import files So far, I have looked at a few open source DAM, systems, such as Razuna, Gallery (not strictly DAM), ResourceSpace, Notre-DAM, while these are brilliant and open-source, they don't integrate as smoothly with the Desktop as iPhoto and aperture. For iPhoto and aperture, I have tried creating a Shared library on the server (a tad laggy), and also using a drive with no permissions, put a library and letting each client read from it, however if they want to put images onto the library only, it's only supports one user at a time writing to the library... Any ideas what could fulfill our needs? Or is it time to bite the bullet for FinalCut Server? Thanks in advance.

• How To Remove Bottleneck with Squid Caching Proxy

  I'm more of a LAMP web developer trying to help the sysop. When I joined a project, I inherited some old PHP spaghetti code. Some of that code is that it goes out to a third-party website (let's call it thirdparty.com) and pulls down content with an HTTP-GET request. Unfortunately, the way the code is designed, it needs to do this several times a minute. When we looked at the bottlenecks on the server with 'netstat -a', we saw that connections to thirdparty.com were constantly running when this content would be plenty fine to be gathered once a day. What I need to know is if the Squid Proxy Caching Server is the solution we need? I'm guessing that this might let us have it pretend to be thirdparty.com on the network. If the web server needs to query thirdparty.com, it hits Squid instead. Squid can then determine whether it needs to supply content from cache or if it needs to go to thirdparty.com for fresh content. Is this the solution we need? And second, is this easily configured and only to cache thirdparty.com requests?

• If spaces in filenames are possible, why do some of us still avoid using them?

  Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Non-technical people must look at filenames created by geeks and wonder where we learned English. So, what are the reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant reasons, other than the practice being a vestigial preference? UPDATE: Thanks for all your answers! I'm surprised how popular this was. So, here's a summary: Six Reasons Why Geeks Prefer Filenames Without Spaces In Them It's irritating to put quotes around them when referenced on the command line (or elsewhere.) Some older operating systems didn't used to support them and us old dogs are used to that. Some tools still don't support spaces in filenames at all or very well. (But they should.) It's irritating to escape spaces when used where spaces must be escaped, such as URLs. Certain unenlightened services (e.g. file hosting, webmail) remove or replace spaces anyway! Names without spaces can be shorter, which is sometimes desirable as paths are limited.

• Windows roaming profile when creating a new user profile

  When a particular user is having a lot of problems with Windows XP e.g. applications crashing, unresponsive applications (which used to work), and as a general troubleshooting practice for a domain user, I normally rename that user's old profile and get him/her to logon to create a "fresh" profile (on the same PC). More often than not, this will solve the problem albeit some reconfiguration i.e. Outlook, Excel add-ins etc. As I took over the systems admin role from another administrator, I would like to know what is the easiest way to find out (either through a third party or some Windows administrative tool) what settings are carried over if the profile is a Roaming Profile. I tested creating a new user profile for one of my users and it seems basic Outlook settings such as the user's mailbox and PSTs are carried over automatically when I create a new user profile. I suspect this is done through a batch file loaded as part of the login script. However, my knowledge of scripting is limited and I don't want any corruptions to be carried over to the new profile. Can someone share their experiences on this? Thanks in advance.

• laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

  Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious... • Apache Virtual host not recognized

  I've been using one server, then I reinstalled everything on another server, and the mod_jk stopped working. Here is the situation: apache 2.0 sitting "in front" mod_jk used to connect to the apache to tomcat tomcat 6.0.26 used to server the actual requests I followed this tutorial. The result is: accessing http://mysite.com opens the index.html in /var/www/ accessing http://mysite.com:8080/ works OK the logs at /var/logs/apache2 show everything is OK: [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53.310 2010] [28349:3075389184] [info] init_jk::mod_jk.c (2830): mod_jk/1.2.26 initialized [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [warn] No JkShmFile defined in httpd.conf. Using default /var/log/apache2/jk-runtime-status [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_jk/1.2.26 configured -- resuming normal operations I compared the server.xml, jk.conf, sites-enabled/mysite from the new server to those from the old one and they are identical. The domain name is the same (I updated the DNS record today, and it has refreshed successfully) So the question is, what can go wrong? Is there another place where problems would be logged, if such occur? Update What I can be almost certain of is that the virtual host is not recognized. It is always forwarded to the default virtual host. So, how to make sure the virtual host is recognized and working?

• Acer Aspire One -- strange battery problem, charges only up to ~90%

  I have this strange problem on the acer aspire one d250. It happened already once before, stayed for about two weeks, and then "fixed itself". The problem is as follows: the battery can't seem to get fully charged; ie the indicator is stuck at about 90% (it's probably not a software problem -- I have ArchLinux and Windows 7 installed and both report exactly the same) and it never passes that value, but it still shows the status as "charging" (I tried everything I could think of -- leaving it charging for extremely long amounts of time, doing a few complete charge-recharge cycles, removing/reinserting the battery, cleaning the connectors, even updating the BIOS, etc., and nothing helped). Also, when it is getting charged, it charges pretty fast until about 70% and then progresses extremely slowly. The battery holds the charge that appears on the battery indicator normally. Just can't get the battery to charge fully -- I can't get it past the 90%. At first I thought this would be a simple battery failure (even if the computer is not that old, about 6-7 months), but as I mentioned it happened once before, and then one day it fixed itself. I tried contacting Acer about this, but the support was not helpful, completely stupid, it seemed like they used canned responses, the usual. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

• PXE bootable image for terminal server?

  We have 300 windows xp machines on cruddy old hardware across the company. With extended support for XP ending April next year we're looking into our options. Couple of options: Replace the 300 PC's with full windows 7 PC's (£100k +?) - no use of terminal server (our current model) Replace the 300 PC's with off the shelf thin clients & make use of our terminal server - Cheaper clients but Terminal Server CALS required? Keep the 300 PC's, replace windows XP with linux thin client capable of connecting to our terminal server - no hardware costs, just Terminal Server CALS required? Keep the 300 PC's - remove hard drives and make use of a PXE bootable "thin client" to connect to our terminal server If we were to choose option 4, what our the options out there? Is there any official PXE bootable thin clients for terminal server out there? If so, what are the licence requirements? Is there options we haven’t considered? There must be lots of companies out there in this situation - curious what the current trend is for this problem? Edit: Option 5 - Create a bootable Windows PE image with RDP auto start and use that as a "thin client" for our terminal server - is Windows PE licence free in such a model?
