• What tasks should an Architect NOT do or limit to be effective?

  There are plenty of questions/answers about what an architect does, but what should someone in an Architect role NOT do? What are the boundaries/limits to maintain to be an effective Architect? I'm thinking here of Architect vs Developer and Architect vs Project Manager For example, I'm finding myself in a role where my title is Architect but I am also the coding/development lead and project manager on multiple small enterprise projects. I'm struggling with all the task switching and now I want to limit task switching. Trying to wear every hat just isn't working. What tasks should an Architect not do at all? What tasks should an Architect limit? I do think an Architect needs to keep coding, but how to define an appropriate limit for coding work?

• Multicast image restoration with adaptive speed

  I'm curious to know if there are any tools for restoring disk images (or even transferring files) via multicast -- for any platform, especially if the project has source available -- where the multicast rate adjusts itself on the fly. On the Mac, all multicast solutions I am aware of (such as Deploy Studio, and NetRestore before it) make use of multicast ASR (apple software restore), which has one glaring deficiency -- you have to set the multicast speed before you start sending a disk image over the network, and that speed is locked in. Either your clients can keep up and restore, or they can't*. It seems to me that it must be possible for the multicast server to adjust the data rate, so you basically say "start sending this image", clients connect, and, if they can't keep up, they tell the server so it slows down. (Likewise, I'd expect the server to try speeding up if no client is having difficulties keeping up, and I'd expect to be able to cap that maximum throughput so that other network activities can go on without being resource starved.) So, what sort of tools are out there? For Linux? Windows? Is there something for the Mac I've overlooked. [It just kills me that it is true that, by the time you get multicast up and going at a good speed to restore a lab, you could've unicasted the data to all the computers and be done.] * There is a little leeway involved. I think individual clients can say, "I missed a little bit of data" and get it, and they can opt to listen in the next time the image is sent over the network, but on the whole, if they missed it the first go round, you have to image the machine again, and there is no time savings.

• Ubuntu server or Debian server (to run C++ apps developed on Ubuntu)

  I have written a number of C++ server side daemons for my website, using my Ubuntu 9.10 dev machine. The C++ apps I mentioned above are "GUI-less" daemons (and libraries used by the daemons). I am now about to host my website and need to decide whether to go with Debian server or Ubuntu server. In a nutshell, here is the situation: I developed on Ubuntu desktop because I preferred the more friendly GUI I would like to deploy on Debian Server because of the (perceived?) robustness of the Debian server over Ubuntu server (I may be totally wrong here - and in fact, this is really what this question is all about) If Debian server is indeed more robust than Ubuntu server, then I have no choice but to go with Debian server - BUT, will my Ubuntu developed C++ apps run on the server? (or do I need to recompile them on the server? (I'd HATE to have to do this, because I want to keep the server machine clean and light - no GUI, no dev tools etc). This last question is really about binary compatability between Ubuntu and Debian. I want the server to be robust, secure and stable, and simply act as a server (i.e. LAMP and very little else - no GUI etc). Given that requirement, and the fact that I need to run my C++ apps (developed on Ubuntu 9.10), I need advice on which OS to choose for the server. Ideally, any advice will be backed with a reason. I am particularly interested in hearing from people who have been in an identical situation, or done something similar.

• Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and docking station

  Developer in me woke up this morning and asked me to fix this before Christmas. (As his Christmas gift). So, if I power on the laptop after docking it, everything works fine. But if I am working on it standalone and then try to dock it, I cannot get the display. Same way, if I undock it while working, I loose the display. Basically, I need to reboot for any docking/undocking dance to work. Questions: 1) What kind of information should I be looking for to understand the problem? 2) Where to find that information. After this, I can go and try to figure out what is going wrong.

• does eCryptfs support multiple users?

  I'm new to ecryptfs and I need some clarification on how it works. Suppose there are two root users userA and userB, If I mount some folder under userA: [userA@Dev] $ mount ecryptfs real img now I can visit the img folder to access decrypted data. My questions is: While userA is still in log in state. Can userB login and access the decrypted data? This is currently what I observed on my local machine, but I'm not sure if it was cause by my misconfiguration. If it is the case, how can I avoid other users from accessing the decrypted data while userA is in login state?

• Synchronization between game logic thread and rendering thread

  How does one separate game logic and rendering? I know there seem to already be questions on here asking exactly that but the answers are not satisfactory to me. From what I understand so far the point of separating them into different threads is so that game logic can start running for the next tick immediately instead of waiting for the next vsync where rendering finally returns from the swapbuffer call its been blocking on. But specifically what data structures are used to prevent race conditions between the game logic thread and the rendering thread. Presumably the rendering thread needs access to various variables to figure out what to draw, but game logic could be updating these same variables. Is there a de facto standard technique for handling this problem. Maybe like copy the data needed by the rendering thread after every execution of the game logic. Whatever the solution is will the overhead of synchronization or whatever be less than just running everything single threaded?

• I Made Wordpress Multisite. And Now Everything Doesn't Display Properly

  I installed Ubuntu 10.4 then I installed Bitnami LAMP stack then I installed bitnami wordpress module then I tried to make the site into a multisite by following these instructions: http://wiki.bitnami.org/Applications/BitNami_WordPress_Multisite#How_to_add_several_WordPress_Multisite_blogs_with_different_domains.3f AND http://wiki.bitnami.org/Applications/BitNami_WordPress_Multisite I can elaborate if needed: I enabled multisite in my wp-config.php file. Then I created a network using the wordpress dashboard. I was given two blocks of text to copy and paste 1 block into my wp-config.php file and one into my .htaccess file. I did that and now I get this: When I go to my mywebsite.com I get this (this was there before I switched to multisite): If I go to mywebsite.com/wordpress I get this (this used to be a functioning wordpress theme): If I click on "My Blog" it redirects to 1mywebsite.com (where the "1" came from I have no idea) If I try to login by going to mywebsite.com/wordpress/wp-login I get this: and if I enter my user and password it redirects me to mywebsite.com/wp-login.php and gives me "Not Found" The requested URL /wp-login.php was not found on this server. • Windows Virtual Machines will not run

  I'm trying to setup a few virtual machines to use for testing websites in the various old versions of IE. I had Microsoft Virtual PC working on an older machine using XP mode and 2 other VHD's from Microsoft that allowed me to test in IE6-IE8. I've recently gotten a new work machine and am trying to set up the VMs again for testing, however nothing seems to be working. Both the old and the new system run Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate with AMD processors. I downloaded Virtual PC & XP mode from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx and go through the installation process. XP mode is installed, but when I try to run it it goes through the initial setup process only to fail when it is almost complete with the error "Cannot Complete Setup". (After googling I see that this might be a conflict with my processor) I download other VHD's from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx in order to get the other versions of IE and try to set those up in Virtual PC as well. I click on them to start the machine and both Windows 7 with IE8 and Windows Vista with IE7 just hang at a black screen. I try to use Virtual Box instead, and I get Windows XP with IE6 running, but I have no internet connection in the VM. I try all different settings and try to google the correct settings but nothing seems to work. When I load the VM, XP shows that its found new hardware but it needs the drivers. One of these pieces of hardware is the network adapter, but I can't connect to the internet to download the driver in the guest OS. VirtualBox tells me I need to install extensions in order for things to function properly. I go through the installation process in the guest OS and restart the VM, however now XP is asking for validation and I can't access the VM. I try installing the other 2 OS (Vista & 7) but I get a BSOD right after the startup screen appears and the VM restarts itself. I'm getting so frustrated trying to make this work, I would really appreciate any assistance on getting the VMs up and running or any alternatives for testing websites in Internet Explorer.

  I have a matrix-style table in excel where B1:Z1 are column headings and A2:A99 are row headings. I would like to convert this table to a 3 column table (column heading, row heading, cell value). It does not matter in what order the new table is.   When users enter my website example.com, their "preferred" language is detected and they are redirected (using a 301 Moved Permanently redirection) to example.com/en/ (for english), example.com/it/ (for italian), etc. It works perfectly, but when I analized my website with the Google Page Speed tool it gave me the following advice. Many pages, especially mobile pages, redirect users to a different URL, for instance from www.example.com to m.example.com. Making this redirect cacheable by the user's browser can speed up page load times for repeat visitors to a site. And later it says We recommend using a 302 redirect with a cache lifetime of one day. The redirect should include a Vary: User-Agent header as well as a Cache-Control: private header. So my questions are, how can I do a "cacheable" redirection in PHP? • Can I have damaged a CPU ?

  Hey guys, This is a question I asked on Anantech forums, but I just discovered this community and think this question would fit right in. Here goes: I built a PC around a Q9550 1 1/2 years ago (MoBo is an Asus P5Q deluxe). Specs give 2.83GHz, OC'ed it to 3.40 GHZ without any problem (or so I thought) till 2 months ago. Cooling is provided by stock Intel Fan... 2 Months ago, I began to see random crashes, bios saying CPU overheat error... PC would reboot at OC'ed speed without any problem. Since last saturday and a few more crashes, PC won't reboot at 3.40 GHz, and even at stock speed (2.83 GHz), I got core temperatures of (60 C idle, 95 C under load) on the first two cores. This is the 4 core temperatures I am talking about, not the T-CPU which obvioulsy is lower. Fan is running at a steady 2000 RPM. Questions for you : 1. Is 2000 RPM the normal speed of the Intel fan or is my fan somehow broken (which could explain the overheating). In this case, any recommendation for a good fan for OCing ? 2. Hypothesis I fear is the right one: can the CPU have been slowly damaged over time by this OCing, meaning there is nothing much to do except waiting for it to die ? (As a side note, I am surprised that the 9550 is still around 300 $CDN here... Thought it would have been cheaper with all those i3/i5/i7 around). Any help or advice would be more than welcome...

  There are two questions which I get every single day multiple times. In my gmail, I have created standard canned reply for them. Let us see the questions here. I want to delete from multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? I want to update multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? The answer is – No, You cannot and you should not. SQL Server does not support deleting or updating from two tables in a single update. If you want to delete or update two different tables – you may want to write two different delete or update statements for it. This method has many issues – from the consistency of the data to SQL syntax. Now here is the real reason for this blog post – yesterday I was asked this question again and I replied my canned answer saying it is not possible and it should not be any way implemented that day. In the response to my reply I was pointed out to my own blog post where user suggested that I had previously mentioned this is possible and with demo example. Let us go over my conversation – you may find it interesting. Let us call the user DJ. DJ: Pinal, can we delete multiple table in a single statement or with single delete statement? Pinal: No, you cannot and you should not. DJ: Oh okey, if that is the case, why do you suggest to do that? Pinal: (baffled) I am not suggesting that. I am rather suggesting that it is not possible and it should not be possible. DJ: Hmm… but in that case why did you blog about it earlier? Pinal: (What?) No, I did not. I am pretty confident. This is all together different concept than deleting multiple values in a single statement. When I hear that someone wants to delete or update multiple table in a single statement what I assume is something very similar to following. DELETE/UPDATE Table 1 (cols) Table 2 (cols) VALUES … which is not valid statement/syntax as well it is not ASNI standards as well. And begun to wonder from a game making perspective: I saw the example in the first link, are there any additional advantages in performance when using HaXe instead of AS3 for games development (for the web)?
