Polygonal Divs -- Making content overflow in a specific shape?

Here is the site I'm currently working on: http://willcrichton.net/ If you click on the arrows on each side of the hexagon in the middle, you can see that it transitions left and right using jQuery + jQuery Cycle + jQuery Easing. However, you can also see that it is rather ugly -- because I'm using hexagons and not squares and because divs are square shaped, the content hexagon overlaps with with the background in an unpleasant way. So, my question is: how would I essentially hack a div into a hexagon? That hexagon should be the same size/shape of the content div, and when content is outside the area of the hexagon it should be invisible.

Gallery has too much padding in IE7

My Flickr gallery looks good in all browsers except IE 7. What else do I need to put in my CSS code for it to not look so lopsided in IE 7. What happens to an instance of ServerSocket blocked inside accept(), when I drop all references to i

In a multithreaded Java application, I just tracked down a strange-looking bug, realizing that what seemed to be happening was this: one of my objects was storing a reference to an instance of ServerSocket on startup, one thread would, in its main loop in run(), call accept() on the socket while the socket was still waiting for a connection, another thread would try to restart the component under some conditions, the restart process missed the cleanup sequence before it reached the initialization sequence as a result, the reference to the socket was overwritten with a new instance, which then wasn't able to bind() anymore the socket which was blocking inside the accept() wasn't accessible anymore, leaving a complete shutdown and restart of the application as the only way to get rid of it. Which leaves me wondering: with no references left to the ServerSocket instance, what would free the socket for a new connection? At what point would the ServerSocket become garbage collected? In general, what are good practices I can follow to avoid this type of bug?

jQuery changing css on navigation when div # scrolls into view

I'm looking to recreate the effect used on this site: http://www.brizk.com/ The site uses one large page that scrolls down. As you scroll down and pass different sections the menu navigation on the left changes css class to "current" as the corresponding div comes into view. I presume this can be done with jQuery using $(window).height(); I'm fairly new to jQuery and what I want to write is something like this (in laymans terms): Get height of browser window – if div#content1 is 100px from top and/or 200px from bottom change menu a#link1 to '.current' – else remove .current from all menu a links ... and repeat for 4 different content divs. Can anyone point me in the right direction..? Edit Mode Delete Spinner Icon for Specific TableView Rows

I have a grouped tableview. Each section has three rows. I need to be able to delete one section at a time. Using the standard edit mode, I can make it work. However, the delete icon shows up to the left of each cell, not just the first row in each section. Is there a way to suppress the little spinner icon for all rows except the first? I am hoping there is an easy way to do this without subclassing. Thanks for your help. I have a mouseleave event on my list. jQuery(".list").live("mouseleave", function(event) { alert("Boom"); }); But at the same time I have a tooltip displayed over it. This tooltip doesn't belong to this list, it is in other div. Now, when i move mouse over that div, i get an alert - i left the list. IntelliJ Split Window Navigation

If I split the editor window (horizontal or vertical) into N tab groups, how do I switch/toggle from one tab group to another via the keyboard? If all of the tabs are in the same group you can switch from each tab easily (CTRL + right/left arrow), but when they're in separate tab groups I can't. I've searched through the key mappings and have not found one that seems to accomplish this. I know I can use the mouse, but I'm trying to find ways to avoid the mouse and stay with the keyboard. TIA for any help on this.

Command line tool (PDF Workflow) in OSX that detects if key is down

Hello! I'm writing a OSX PDF Workflow in ObjC and C. A single executable ("UNIX Tool" as named in the Apple reference), that reads in the spooled PDF file, does some parsing. I'd like to give more functionality by enabling a key-down event handling, meaning - when user opens print dialog in an application - and chooses to left-mouse-click on the custom made pdf workflow to run it - depending on if a keyboard key is down (i.e. option key, but "any key down" would be enough for me) when running that workflow - a decision is made in the code. I have read NSEvent and Carbon Event Manager reference and it seems that in this case (a plain unix executable + not run as root) it's not possible. Or is it? Many thanks in advance, Kroko

I wonder how they achieve this. Originally i think it's some sort of image-only pop-up window but then pop-up window seems to update the entire view. Extjs 3.4 - Button Icon does not show or does not center

I want to fill a button with an icon I created but whatever I have tried just seems to put the icon either half cut off and way left, or it doesn't show at all. I've been trying different combinations of CSS and the icon, iconcls, cls button options. I was following the Ext 3 buttons example page but that doesn't seem to display anything for me... How can the domain of the user be found from Active Directory programatically. One method thought of is : 1)Get the distinguished name of user from Active Directory. 2)Parse the distinguished name. 3)Get the substring that starts the first instance of "DC=". 4)Strip off the "DC=" at the beginning. 5)Replace all instances of ",DC=" with a "." 6)What is left is the DNS domain name of the user. My problem is, I need a background image, a sprite(with animation) on left edge, another sprite(with animation) at other edge, a number count animation 1-2-3 at middle. I got all these when I wrote all in same file.(like [self addChild:label], [self addChild:sprite].., But in this it needs touch enables for both sprites separately, and touchDisabled to the remaining screen. So thought of writing in different files. But now it is not working. I kept one sprite, background image, numbercount in one file and another spritr in other file. Either I am getting the second sprite or the (sprite+background+numberCount) is displayed. This is my problem. plz give me solution. Thank You

In a grid I have a date/time field where I would like the user to be able to type in short-hand formats for dates and times. For example, if they type in "435p" and then focus off of the cell they get the message "The value you entered isn't valid for this field.". Instead, I want to trap a pre-validationevent and change it to "4:35pm" for them. What event can I use? I've tried: LostFocus & BeforeUpdate: too late (validation fires before event) Dirty & OnChange: too early (they haven't left the cell yet) Or is there a way to turn off the native validation rule that is checking for date formats?

Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

Java multidimensional array and scanner novice Q

I'm new to Java and trying to in essence implement a grid with a character, and if the user inputs 'w' 'a' 's' or 'd' the character moves up/down/left/right within the plane. I created a multidimensional array sized 10x10 public static String[][] grid = new String[10][10]; And then just used a for loop to print "*"s in a 10x10 grid, except for grid[a][b] which is equal to character "A" i.e. my thing to be moved around. That seemed to work alright, then I needed to detect the 'wasd' input from the user so I set up a: Scanner in = new Scanner (System.in); while (in.hasNext()) And I had then: String s = in.next(); char ch = s.charAt(0); switch (ch) but I couldn't make this work, and it wasn't because I didn't complete the "switch" statement, I did, I just see it void copying and pasting the entire thing. I'm sure its incredibly easy slight thing I am missing, can you please point it out for me?
