• ASP.net error message when using REST starter kit

  Hi all, I've written some code using the REST starter kit and it works fine on my development machine. However, when I upload it to our server the page gives me the following error message... CS1684: Warning as Error: Reference to type 'System.Runtime.Serialization.Json.DataContractJsonSerializer' claims it is defined in 'c:\WINNT\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.ServiceModel.Web\3.5.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35\System.ServiceModel.Web.dll', but it could not be found I've removed code line by line and it appears that the following line of code is triggering the error... HttpContent newOrganizationContent = HttpContentExtensions.CreateXmlSerializable(newOrganizationXml); Really haven't got a clue how to fix it. I assumed it might be because it needs a newer version of the framework to run, but looking in IIS it says it's running version 2.0.50727 which I think is the lates version because it says that even when we're using framework 3.5 Very confused, any ideas?   This is kind of a follow on from a previous question I posted but I've not been able to get it to work.. I'm trying to use multiple sets of tabs (jQuery) on one page. • Create fulltext index on a VIEW

  Is it possible to create a full text index on a VIEW? If so, given two columns column1 and column2 on a VIEW, what is the SQL to get this done? The reason I'd like to do this is I have two very large tables, where I need to do a FULLTEXT search of a single column on each table and combine the results. The results need to be ordered as a single unit. Suggestions? EDIT: This was my attempt at creating a UNION and ordering by each statements scoring. I have 2 tables Members and Managers Members has: memberID, Name, Address Managers has: memberID, EditRights, DeleteRights EditRights and DeleteRights are of type bit. Mangers have a relationship with Members, because they are members themselves. I want to select all members id's, name and adress and for the members that are managers show if they have editrights and/or deleterights. • Passing Derived Class Instances as void* to Generic Callbacks in C++

  This is a bit of an involved problem, so I'll do the best I can to explain what's going on. If I miss something, please tell me so I can clarify. We have a callback system where on one side a module or application provides a "Service" and clients can perform actions with this Service (A very rudimentary IPC, basically). For future reference let's say we have some definitions like so: typedef int (*callback)(void*); // This is NOT in our code, but makes explaining easier. installCallback(string serviceName, callback cb); // Really handled by a proper management system sendMessage(string serviceName, void* arg); // arg = value to pass to callback This works fine for basic types such as structs or builtins. We have an MI structure a bit like this: Device <- Disk <- MyDiskProvider class Disk : public virtual Device class MyDiskProvider : public Disk The provider may be anything from a hardware driver to a bit of glue that handles disk images. The point is that classes inherit Disk. We have a "service" which is to be notified of all new Disks in the system, and this is where things unravel: void diskHandler(void *p) { Disk *pDisk = reinterpret_cast<Disk*>(p); // Uh oh! // Remainder is not important } SomeDiskProvider::initialise() { // Probe hardware, whatever... // Tell the disk system we're here! sendMessage("disk-handler", reinterpret_cast<void*>(this)); // Uh oh! } The problem is, SomeDiskProvider inherits Disk, but the callback handler can't receive that type (as the callback function pointer must be generic). Could RTTI and templates help here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• MVC: Submit one form from a page with multiple forms

  I'm working in an ASP.NET 3.5 MVC application where i've got a view with multiple forms in it. Form 1 contains information about products and will form a shoppingcart with a remove button. When i use the submit button on the second form everything seems to be submitted and the action in the controller for the first form is trying to handle the request. That is where the error occurce because the information in the viewmodel isn't corresponding to what is being expected.   This question of mine (currently unanswered), drove me toward finding a better solution to what I'm attempting. My requirements: chunks of code which can be arbitrarily added into a document, without an identifier: [div class="thing"] [elements... /] [/div] the objects are scanned for and found by an external script: var things = yd.getElementsBy(function(el){ return yd.hasClass('thing'); },null,document ); the objects must be individually configurable, what I have currently is identifier-based: [div class="thing" id="thing0"] [elements... /] [script type="text/javascript"] new Thing().init({ id:'thing0'; }); [/script] [/div] So I need to ditch the identifier (id="thing0") so there are no duplicates when more than one chunk of the same code is added to a page I still need to be able to config these objects individually, without an identifier SO! All of that said, I wondered about creating a dynamic global variable within the script block of each added chunk of code, within its script tag. As each 'thing' is found, I figure it would be legit to grab the innerHTML of the script tag and somehow convert that text into a useable JS object. Discuss.   I would like to use Google Website Optimizer (GWO)'s multivariate tests to test some different versions of a web page. I can change from version to version just by varying some class tags on a div, i.e. the different versions are of this form: <div id="testing" class="foo1 bar1">content</div> <div id="testing" class="foo1 bar2">content</div> <div id="testing" class="foo2 bar1">content</div> <div id="testing" class="foo2 bar2">content</div> In the ideal, I would be able to use GWO section code in place of each class, and google would just swap in the appropriate tags (foo1 or foo2, bar1 or bar2). However, naively doing this results in horribly malformed code because I would be trying to put <script> tags inside the div's class attribute: <div id="testing" class=" <script>utmx_section("foo-class")</script>foo1</noscript> <script>utmx_section("bar-class")</script>bar1</noscript> "> content </div> And indeed, the browser chokes all over it. My current best approach is just to use a different div for each variable in the test, as follows: <script>utmx_section("foo-class-div")</script> <div class="foo1"> </noscript> <script>utmx_section("bar-class-div")</script> <div class="bar1"> </noscript> content </div> </div> So testing multiple variables requires layer of div-nesting per variable, and it all seems rather awkward. • Supporting more than one codebase in ANSI-C

  I am working on a project, with an associated Ansi-C code base. (let me call this the 'main' codebase). I now am confronted with a typical problem (stated below), which I believe I would be able to solve much easily if I had an object-oriented language at hand. The problem is this: I will have to start more than one codebases; i.e. I will have to start supporting a parallel codebase (even maybe more in the future). The initial codebases for all the new (i.e. parallel) codebases will initially be identical as the old (i.e. 'main') codebase. As we are talking about the 'C' language, I have till now been thinking of adding '#ifdef' statements to code, and writing the branch-spacific code inside those 'ifdef' blocks. Hoping that I made the problem clear (enough!), I would like to hear thoughts on clever patterns that would help me handle this problem elegantly in Ansi C. Cheers

• Multiple on-screen view controllers in iPhone apps

  I'm creating a lot of custom views and controllers in a lot of my apps and so far I've mostly set them up programmatically, with adjustments and instantiations being controlled from plists. However, now I'm transitioning to using Interface Builder as much as possible (wish I had done that before, was always on my back-list). Apple is recommending against having many view controllers being simultaneously active in iPhone apps, with a couple of well-known exceptions. I've never fully understood why it should be bad to have different parts of the interface belong to different controllers, if they have no interdependent functionality at all. Does having multiple controllers risk messing up the responder chain, or is there some other reason that it's not recommended, except for the fact that it's usually not needed? What I want to be able to do is design reusable views and controls in IB, but since a nib is not associated with a view, but with a view controller, it seems I'd have to have different parts of the screen be connected to different controllers. I know it's possible to have other objects than view controllers being instantiated from nibs. Should I look into how to create my own alternative more light-weight controllers (that could be sub-controllers of a UIViewController) which could be instantiated from nibs?

• Qt MOC Filename Collisions using multiple .pri files

  In order to keep my Qt project somewhat organized (using Qt Creator), I've got one .pro file and multiple .pri files. Just recently I added a class to one of my .pri files that has the same filename as a class that already existed in a separate .pri file. The file structure and makefiles generated by qmake appear to be oblivious to the filename collision that ensues. The generated moc_* files all get thrown into the same subdirectory (either release or debug, depending) and one ends up overwriting the other. When I try to make the project, I get several warnings that look like this: Makefile.Release:318: warning: overriding commands for target `release/moc_file.cpp` And the project fails to link. Here is a simple example of what I'm talking about. Directory structure: + project_dir | + subdir1 | | - file.h | | - file.cpp | + subdir2 | | - file.h | | - file.cpp | - main.cpp | - project.pro | - subdir1.pri | - subdir2.pri Contents of project.pro: TARGET = project TEMPLATE = app include(subdir1.pri) include(subdir2.pri) SOURCES += main.cpp Contents of subdir1.pri: HEADERS += subdir1/file.h SOURCES += subdir1/file.cpp Contents of subdir2.pri: HEADERS += subdir2/file.h SOURCES += subdir2/file.cpp Is there a way to tell qmake to generate a system that puts the moc_* files from separate .pri files into separate subdirectories?

• Jetty 6: Unknown Error 99

  The system I'm developing is comprised of a jetty server (v6.1.2rc4) and a php frontend that sends http requests to jetty via curl_exec. The server and the client are on the same machine. The requests I send can be both POSTs and GETs, I get the same error for either which is: Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1: Unknown error 99 This is rather cryptic. It seems that after the first problematic request, some of the following (unrelated) requests also get corrupted. It looks like jetty is simply refusing the connection, but I can't read more than that into the error message. I thought it was a problem with the server's configuration, so I tried changing jetty's maxIdleTimeMs, but without success. Any idea about what to do is welcome thanks, Silvio

• What is the preferred way to update database schemas in multiple production environments

  I am about to install some 20 servers with the same web application in multiple locations connected to their own local database. I will be updating the web applications remotely (perhaps using debian's package manager) and I'm sure will eventually need to update the database schemas. Since each server could be eventually be using a different release of the web application, I need a way to apply the incremental changes to the servers. I'm thinking something like this. Let's start with database.schema.1 as the original release of the database and assume this number increases with each new version of the schema. I eventually could end up with database.schema.17 as the current release. For a new installation this would be the schema to install. It seems to me that I would need consecutive translations like database.translation.1.2 which would convert database.schema.1 into database.schema.2, database.translation.2.3 to convert from 2 to 3 and so on until 17. It seems that whenever I change a schema I need to alter the database but perhaps I need to run some script to update the data which might be done with SQL but might require an external non sql script. What is the appropriate way to organize all these files? What is the automatic way to apply those upgrades to the schema? Where do I store the current version number of the schema?

• Silverlight RIA Services - Showing columns from multiple tables

  Hello, I have been evaluating Silverlight and .NET RIA Services for my company. I am trying to decide if it is right for us. For the most part, I like it. But, I see one item that I am surprised that I cannot do easily. Because of this, I'm guessing I'm doing some thing wrong. To demonstrate, I have two database tables: Order ----- ID CustomerID OrderDate OrderNumber Customer -------- ID FirstName LastName Address When I create my Domain Service class, I select both of these tables. On the Silverlight application, I drag-and-drop the Order entity from the Data Sources page to my Silverlight page. When I do this, a DataGrid is added with all of the properties in the Order entity. In reality though, I would like the DataGrid to show: Order.OrderNumber Order.OrderDate Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Because this information is spread across multiple tables, I'm not sure how to use RIA Services to show them in my Silverlight application. What is the recommended way to do this? Should I add a view in my database? Can I do it without touching the database? Thank you,

Is it possible that I am trying to access the data to rapidly? I have this function call in a loop, so something like for i in hugelist: #try to get a value from the berkdb #do something with it I am running this with multiple datasets and this error only occurs with one of them, the largest one, not the others.

  Hi all, How do I get line numbers to be reported with my errors when testing. Here is what I get back on a typical error: josh@josh-laptop:~/d/test$ ruby unit/line_test.rb -n test_update Loaded suite unit/line_test Started E Finished in 0.066663 seconds. 1) Error: test_update(LineTest): NameError: undefined local variable or method `sdf' for #<LineTest:0xb6e61304> 1 tests, 0 assertions, 0 failures, 1 errors It is tough to debug without a line number and filename. From the code samples I've seen, people generally get back a more verbose error reports. How do I enable this? Thanks!

Where did I go wrong?

  So I want to prepare a query something like: SELECT id FROM users WHERE (branch, cid) IN $1; But I then need to bind a variable length list of arrays like (('a','b'),('c','d')) to it. How do I go about doing this? I've tried using ANY but can't seem to get the syntax right. Cheers, Alec Edit: After some fiddling around, this is valid syntactically: SELECT id FROM users WHERE (branch, cid) = ANY ($1::text[][]); and then binding the string '{{a,b},{c,d}}' to $1 but throws the error "operator does not exist: record = text". Changing 'text' to 'record' then throws "input of anonymous composite types is not implemented". Any ideas?

You might have expected an instance of Array.   Can you cast an object to one that implements an interface? Right now, I'm building a GUI, and I don't want to rewrite the Confirm/Cancel code (A confirmation pop-up) over and over again. So, what I'm trying to do is write a class that gets passed the class it's used in and tells the class whether or not the user pressed Confirm or Cancel. The class always implements a certain interface. Code: class ConfirmFrame extends JFrame implements ActionListener { JButton confirm = new JButton("Confirm"); JButton cancel = new JButton("Cancel"); Object o; public ConfirmFrame(Object o) { // Irrelevant code here add(confirm); add(cancel); this.o = (/*What goes here?*/)o; } public void actionPerformed( ActionEvent evt) { o.actionPerformed(evt); } } I realize that I'm probably over-complicating things, but now that I've run across this, I really want to know if you can cast an object to another object that implements a certain interface.
