• Is there a canonical book for learning Java as an experienced developer?

  I have been a .NET developer now for about the past 5/6 years give or take. I have never done any professional Java development and the last time I really touched it was probably back in college. I have been toying with the Scala language a little bit but nothing serious. Recently, I've been offered an opportunity to do some pretty cool work, but using Java instead of .NET. I think I can get by alright with my current skill set, meaning I already know how to program well and am familiar with languages such as C# and C++, etc. So, the syntax and all that language stuff are really not a problem. What I need is a really good reference book and a book about how to think in Java. Each language/Framework/Stack tries to address things a certain way and I'm sure Java is no different. What are some great Java books that you simply can't live without? Are there any books that talk about the most important parts of Java that must be understood before all else? As a side note, I will be doing mostly Java web development. Not really 100% on what types of stuff they are using for persistence, framework, server, etc.

• South Florida .Net Code Camp - February 12th, 2011

  Later this week, I will be heading to our annual South Florida .Net Code Camp, an all-day free “Geek Fest” taking place on February 12th, 2011.This year’s code camp will be conveniently taking place at Nova Southeastern University in Ft Lauderdale.   With more than 700 already registered, this year’s event is bound to exceed last year’s registration and attendance. We are also fortunate to have secured the backing of a large number of our kind sponsors, supporters and volunteers, with our efforts led by our chief organizer, Fladotnet founder and Microsoft MVP, Dave Noderer.   As a member of the volunteer organizing team, I have gotten a good exposure on what it takes to run a code camp and gotten to appreciate the tremendous amount of work such a large event takes to put together to handle logistics such as venue, food, speaker registration and scheduling, website updates; that of course in addition to the essential outreach efforts necessary to secure sponsorships.   As Dave puts it, Code Camp is a great venue for those who want to gain exposure and experience as technical speakers to try it out just as much as it being a forum for experienced speakers to share the latest on their topics of interest. So far, 65 speakers are already scheduled to speak, bringing us an array of diverse topics.   I will be speaking on ASP.Net MVC3, the Razor view engine and present a brief introduction to NUGet. • How do I encrypt but share a number of folders?

  I want to achieve the following functionality. Is it possible? Boot up computer (possibly via WakeOnLan or WakeOnPlan). Either be automatically logged in, or log in via login screen, or log in remotely. I change this behavior occasionally, so full disk encryption wouldn't work for me because it requires a password on bootup (which would it would prevent the remote bootup options, and the automatic login option). I am only interested in encrypting data, not the entire harddrive. Once logged in either: a launcher/tray icon is available to launch encryption app (preferred) run encryption app from the dash Prompted to unlock encrypted folder(s) individually. Unlocked folders are available to: me, apps I am running (e.g. editors, SpiderOak) Ideally, folders that I share with bindfs can be locked/unlocked by other users too. A key point is that once I have unlocked an encrypted folder, I don't want to have to think about it again. I currently achieve this via TrueCrypt (except for the last part). Unfortunately TrueCrypt isn't well integrated with Ubuntu (licensing issues prevent Debian from including it in their repo, the interface isn't quite integrated with Unity, setting it as a startup app doesn't quite work, sharing encrypted folders isn't really part of its design). Is there an alternative to TrueCrypt that is better integrated with the Ubuntu GUI and would suit this workflow?

• How to get both PIPESTATUS and output in bash script

  I'm trying to get last modification date of a file with this command TM_LOCAL=`ls -l --time-style=long-iso ~/.vimrc | awk '{ print $6" "$7 }'` TM_LOCAL has value like "2012-05-16 23:18" after execution of this line I'd also like to check PIPESTATUS to see if there was an error. For example if file does not exists, ls returns 2. But $? has value 0 as it has the return value of awk. If I run this command alone, I can check the return value of ls by looking at ${PIPESTATUS[0]} ls -l --time-style=long-iso ~/.vimrc | awk '{ print $6" "$7 }' But $PIPESTATUS does not work as I've expected if I assign the output to a variable as in the first example. In this case, $PIPESTATUS array has only 1 element which is same as $? So, the question is, how can I get both $PIPESTATUS and assign the output to a variable at the same time?

• VPN using Zywall

  I've played around with a certificate based VPN (normally I don't do hardware) we've manged to setup the connection and the tunnel between the routers is working correctly. We now need the last step. There's no connection to the computers on the other end. What could we have forgotten? (we're testing with two standard configured Win7 machines) EDIT: Just to clarify the tunnel is working I can ping the router on the other end. I can't access the computers on the other side of that router and vice versa. (It's also possible to access the remotemangement console of the remote router on the LAN IP)

• SQL SERVER 2008 – 2011 – Declare and Assign Variable in Single Statement

  Many of us are tend to overlook simple things even if we are capable of doing complex work. In SQL Server 2008, inline variable assignment is available. This feature exists from last 3 years, but I hardly see its utilization. One of the common arguments was that as the project migrated from the earlier version, the feature disappears. I totally accept this argument and acknowledge it. However, my point is that this new feature should be used in all the new coding – what is your opinion? The code which we used in SQL Server 2005 and the earlier version is as follows: DECLARE @iVariable INT, @vVariable VARCHAR(100), @dDateTime DATETIME SET @iVariable = 1 SET @vVariable = 'myvar' SET @dDateTime = GETDATE() SELECT @iVariable iVar, @vVariable vVar, @dDateTime dDT GO The same should be re-written as following: DECLARE @iVariable INT = 1, @vVariable VARCHAR(100) = 'myvar', @dDateTime DATETIME = GETDATE() SELECT @iVariable iVar, @vVariable vVar, @dDateTime dDT GO I have started to use this new method to assign variables as I personally find it very easy to read as well write. • Frequent change of file-system to read-only

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on my relatively new laptop. Initial few days, everything worked fine, but then suddenly I started getting a strange problem. After every 2-3 days, the file-system was becoming read-only. I was unable to save/download anything in the installation drive and the system hanged if I attempted to do so, after which I needed to force restart. I had to run fsck in the repair mode to get it fixed (temporarily). There I used to get the following messages: "Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found. UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN FSCK MANUALLY. fsck / [886] terminated with status 4. Filesystem has errors: /" Then it stopped here and I had to restart again, after which it asked whether I want to repair or not, then the system ran properly. After a day or 2, again I used to face exactly the same problem. The problem become more frequent in the last few days, and even after running the fsck and restarting, was not solving the problem. I re-installed the OS a couple of days back, but even after that, the problem exists. Though it is not that frequent now, but still at times, the file-system becomes read-only and the system stops behaving normally, and I have to run fsck in the repair mode, which makes the whole thing normal. Yes I keep my laptop switched on for long hours and it does get heated up. Please help. Thanks, Anuj

• Visual Studio Continued Excitement

  As you know Visual Studio 2012 RTM’d and then became available in August (Soma’s blog posts told you that here and here), and the VS2012 launch was earlier this month (Soma also told you that here). Every time a release of Visual Studio takes place I am very excited, since this has been my development tool of choice for almost my entire career (from many years before I joined Microsoft). I am doubly excited with this release since it is the second version of Visual Studio that I have worked on and contributed major features to, now that I’ve been in the developer division (DevDiv) for over 4 years. Additionally, I am very excited about the new era that VS2012 starts with VSUpdate for continued customer value: instead of waiting for the next major version of VS to get new features, there is new infrastructure to enable friction-free updates. The first update will ship before the end of this year, and you can read more about it at Brian’s blog post. I also noticed that a CTP of the first quarterly update is available to download here. In the last two months, the VS2012 family of products we all worked on in DevDiv shipped, coinciding with the end of the Microsoft financial/review year, and naturally followed by a couple of organizational changes (e.g. see Jason’s blog post)… On a personal level, this meant that I was very lucky to have an opportunity present itself to me that I simply could not turn down, so I grabbed it! I’ll still be working on Visual Studio, but not in the Parallel Computing part of the C++ team; instead I will be PM-leading the VS Diagnostics team… Stay tuned for details of what is coming in that space, in the VS updates and in the next major VS release, as I am able to share them… Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.

  In the last post, I have showed you how to create a simple site definition. In this post, I will continue with adding more features and customization to the site definition. Create a Top Nav bar for the home page. You need to modify the Onet.xml file by adding NavBar Child into NavBars element. (1002 is the magic number for top nav) and then adding NavBarPage under the File element as highlighted below in the picture. Next, I will include all the site and web features for all the list template and other features that are available in team site. Open OOB team site template by going to 14àTemplate àSiteTemplatesàstsàxmlàONET.XML Copy the web features and site features from the file we just opened to your site definition ONET.XML file. Finally I will include all the document template , copy document templates element from the file we just opened to your own ONET.XML Redeploy your solution and you will see all the document template and list template in your custom site.(Remember to delete all the sites using previous version of the custom definition before deploying and recreation the site.) • Google Glasses–A new world in front of your eyes

  Google is getting into a whole new business that would help us to see the world in a new dimension and free us from all gadgets we carry we today. Google Glasses is a wearable tiny computer that brings information in front of your eyes and lets you interact with it using voice commands. It’s a kind of glasses(spectacles) that you can wear to see and interact with the world in a new way.  With Google Glasses, for example you can look at a beautiful location and through voice you can instruct it to capture a photograph and share it to your friends. You don’t need a camera to capture the beautiful scene, you don’t need an App to upload and share it.  All you need is just Google Glasses By the way these glasses are not heavy head mountable stuff, they are very tiny one and look beautiful too. Check out the embedded video demo released by Google to see them in action and for sure you are going to be amazed.   Last year December 9 to 5 Google posted details about this secret project and NY Times says that these glasses would be available to everyone at affordable cost, anywhere between $250 and $600. • Should root ever own files in my (linux) home directory?

  This question started off asking why my history file wasn't working properly. Then I noticed it was -rw------- 1 root root and hadn't been updated since 2012-09-11. I changed the ownership, problem fixed. But now I see some other files are owned by root: .gitconfig .pearrc .viminfo Can I safely change them to be owned by my normal user, not root? I'm scratching my head trying to work out if there is a downside, or a security consequence. Losing seven weeks history is actually quite painful, because I lean on it a lot (e.g. to remind how I last did an archive). Would it be reasonable to set up a cron job to email me if it finds any files in my home directory owned by anyone else but me? Rephrased: is there ever a good reason for root to own a file in my home directory?

• Ranking hit after WP site migration

  I migrated my site from its old domain over a month ago. I followed WMT completely, including 301 redirects from every existing URL to the new domain, and then submitting a change of address. Traffic continued as normal, but then a few days after submitting the change of address traffic plummeted to about 20-30% of what it was previously. Most of my traffic come from organic search, and I can see that for the keywords I had targeted before and performed well with and am now ranking much much lower for. In some cases for low competition keywords I've only lost a few places, for higher competition terms I have really suffered. This has started to pick up a bit (one of my keywords I have risen from 195 to 100 in the last week), but it seems to be a very slow process. How seamless is this process normally? I was under the impression that this would not affect my rankings too severely, but it has now been a month since the move and recovery seems to be very slow, if at all. Is it likely that I've missed something? The only change is that I have moved what was the home page to be more of a sub-page, and now in its place is a magazine-style home page. I understand that links to the old site will now be pointing to the latter which means that rankings for some keywords attributed to the old home page will take a hit, but even on other pages that seem to fit in exactly the same page structure as the previous site I have seen a drop in rankings. • Carriers Holding Your OS Updates Hostage

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/10/10/carriers-holding-your-os-updates-hostage.aspx Just a small rant here.  Today the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update finally became available for Nokia handset users.  Now I’m not sure that it is AT&T fault entirely that Samsung and HTC users got their updates two months ago and we are just finally seeing it.  It may have something to do with the Nokia Amber update.  But every Windows Phone update on AT&T from 7.1 on seems to have been delayed.  How is it that the premiere Windows Phone carrier is always the last one to release updates? Smart phone ecosystems are a partnership between the OS provider, the hardware manufacturer and the carriers.  If any one of those partners does not hold up its responsibilities then everyone gets a black eye.  The goal for all involved should be to release updates as early as possible with reasonable assurance of stability.  This ensures the satisfaction of consumers and increases the likelihood of future sales. From what I have seen so far AT&T has been the one breaking the consumer’s trust in the Windows Phone ecosystem.  Aside from voicing our dissatisfaction we may need to start voting with our feet until they realize that they being a poor citizen has consequences. • Informing Googlebot for deprecated pages

  I publish timetables in my website. For example last year I published Number 2 bus Summer 2013 timetable. I has pretty good ranking on Google SERPs for number 2 bus timetable But this year I added a new page with the name "Number 2 bus Summer 2014 timetable". When users search number 2 bus timetable in Google, they find 2013 timetable in first page of SERPs. But I want them to find 2014 timetable. Thy can reach 2014 page with the keywords number 2 bus timetable 2014. But most of the users doesn't write year name. So what's the proper way to say Googlebot that 2013 page is deprecated and newer version is 2014 page ? I created a link from 2013 page to 2013 page and added a deprecation alert for visitors. But I still see 2013 timetable in first page of Google SERPs. Of course it is possible to 301 redirect, 2013 page to 2014 page. But I want users to reach old pages to compare the differences between years. (As you would guess I have many pages like this.) Edit: Why I don't put timetables on same page and show different years' timetables with sorting. Because my old pages has good pagerank scores or SERPs. Removing these old page will remove them.

  Whatever bugs you My wife and I used to take some of our summer vacation I a cabin on the shore of Lake Atsion in NJ. I t is a delightful place in the Wharton forest with Brown yet fresh water, where we would canoe, swim and enjoy true rest. Alas, in the last few years, yellow flies also discovered the area’s pastoral delights and came in hoards to bug us. So much so that we had to give up. As a computer programmer I abhor bugs. The bugs that bug me – except the pesky yellow flies – are program bugs , a specific variety of computer bugs. Unlike their IBM brethren, the Burroughs used a 96 column card. The cards were much smaller than the 80 column IBM cards. We wrote our programs on coding sheets and then a key-punch operator transcribed them into punched cards. These were fed into a card reader and compiled. The compiler would notify us of compiler errors or bugs, but it was not always easy to get the meaning of the message. My friend Mark Wildt, also a Burroughs veteran, gave me an old punched card from one of his programs. Obviously a bug!! Here It Is!! That’s All Folks!

• Why is it taking longer to log into windows7?

  I installed windows 7 and it was file for weeks. Recently i created a 2nd user account, installed important updates, installed 1 game and AFAIK that is it. What did it? All three of theses doesnt seem they would cause logging in to take longer (maybe important updates did it?). It takes 90+ seconds to get a fully loaded desktop when it use to take ~30 second. Looking at msconfig and starup i see vmware, dtools, launchy and live messenger (msn). I know i had three of these and maybe all 4 during the last install how can i find out what made loggin in slow? -edit- i also installed visual studios rc1 team instead of beta2 and msvs 2008. But i hardly doubt msvs rc1 did it.

• .NET Demon 1.0 Released

  Today we're officially releasing version 1.0 of .NET Demon, the Visual Studio Extension Alex Davies and I have been working on for the last 6 months. There have been beta versions available for a while, but we have now released the first "official" version and made it available to purchase. If you haven't yet tried the tool, it's all about reducing the time between when you write a line of code and when you are able to try it out so you don't have to wait: Continuous compilation We use spare CPU cycles on your machine to compile your code in the background when you make changes, so assemblies are up to date whenever you want to run them. Some clever logic means we only recompile code which may have been affected by your changes. Continuous save .NET Demon can perform background saving, so you don't lose any work in case of crashes or power failures, and are less likely to forget to commit changed files. Continuous testing (Experimental) The testing tool in .NET Demon watches which code you change in your solution, and automatically reruns tests which are impacted, so you learn about any breaking changes as quickly as possible. It also gives you inline test coverage information inside Visual Studio. Continuous testing is still experimental - it will work fine in many cases, but we know it's not yet perfect. Releasing version 1.0 doesn't mean we're pausing development or pushing out improvements. • LameUser trying - apache2 webserver authentication - IP range to access without pass prompt others with it

  I have (maybe silly) question regarding the apache2 webserver and security - I am trying to archieve this: Users connecting from 192.168.1.24 not to be prompted for password and allowed Others asked for username and password if correct then connect. I am trying to do this for the whole directory /var/www No matter whether I put the code into .htaccess file or in httpd.conf it doesn't work for me. Order deny,allow Deny from all AuthName "PassRequest" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /var/.htpasswd Require valid-user Allow from 192.168.1.24 Satisfy Any If I try to connect to the page I am allowed from both the allowed IP or any other, If I remove the satisfy any line then I am prompted for password, if I remove the password too and try to connect from different IP I am NOT REFUSED ... is there some module that needs to be activated or why is the IP directive skipped ? It needs to be put in every folder or /var/www/.htaccess is enough ? can I just put it in httpd.conf instead or not ?? I spend last 4 hours trying to google up why it is acting like that, Any help will be highly appreciated :-))

• Big AdventureWorks2012

  Last week I launched AdventureWorks on Azure, an initiative to make SQL Azure accessible to anyone, in my blog post AdventureWorks2012 now available for all on SQL Azure. Since then I think its fair to say that the reaction has been lukewarm with 31 insertions into the [dbo].[SqlFamily] table and only 8 donations via PayPal to support it; on the other hand those 8 donators have been incredibly generous and we nearly have enough in the bank to cover a full year’s worth of availability. It was always my intention to try and make this offering more appealing and to that end I have used an adapted version of Adam Machanic’s make_big_adventure.sql script to massively increase the amount of data in the database and give the community more scope to really push SQL Azure and see what it is capable of. There are now two new tables in the database: [dbo].[bigProduct] with 25200 rows [dbo].[bigTransactionHistory] with 7827579 rows The credentials to login and use AdventureWorks on Azure are as they were before: Server mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net Database AdventureWorks2012 User sqlfamily Password sqlf@m1ly Remember, if you want to support AdventureWorks on Azure simply click here to launch a pre-populated PayPal Send Money form - all you have to do is login, fill in an amount, and click Send. • Does concurrency inherently introduce "randomness" into a game?

  When a game is implemented with concurrency (as most games are), does this necessarily, by its very nature, introduce an element of randomness into the game that is outside of the players' control? Note that when I use the word "random", I'm not meaning to launch into a philosophical debate about the deterministic nature of the system. I understand that concurrency is deterministic in the sense that the operating system decides which processes to allow time on the CPU and in what order (or the JVM controls which Thread's turn it is to execute, etc). But my understanding of this is that there is no way to control or predict whether one thread's next command will execute before or after another. The reason I'm asking is because this seems like a fundamental difficulty for game development where a game is supposedly designed around a player's skill. Consider a game like League of Legends. Assume that two players are battling it out. It's a very close contest between the two and it's coming down to the wire -- so much so that whoever gets their last attack off will be the one to kill the other and win the game for their team. If the players are implemented using concurrency and the situation really was like this, is it essentially out of the players' hands at this point? Is the outcome of this match all up to whatever system is arbitrarily deciding which player's thread/process will execute next? If not, what am I misunderstanding about concurrency? If so, is there any way around this problem so that a game of skill can always be a game of skill, especially in those most crucial moments?

• IOMEGA 500GB hard disk data reccovery

  Last year by November I bought an IOMEGA 500GB Prestige hard disk. Yesterday, unfortunately the hard disk fell down from my table. After that incident, when I connect my disk, Windows asks me to format the disk to use, but I didn't format it yet. Actually, on that hard disk I have about 320GB of data. I tried all my possible ways to access my disk. I tried using DOS. It shows "data error (Cyclic redundancy check)". I have a 3 year warranty. Will I be covered under warranty if I report this issue to IOMEGA? Can I get my data back?

• Too sell or give for free

  Hello everyone! I am currently making a game that I was originally planning to sell. It is a simple 2D arcade style game for the PC. I've seen many indie games become popular and generate revenue from advertisements, but the game itself remains free. I need some advice on whether or not I should sell my game, release it for free with advertisements, or ask for donations and keep the game free. I feel that my game is fun, but of course the graphics aren't tip top because I am a programmer, not an artist. I just take screenshots of 3D models I get from Turbosquid and crop around it to make a sprite. Also, and I could be very wrong about this, it seems that there are more legal issues surrounding selling a game than making it free and generating revenue from advertisement, or asking for donations. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. Also, I am very interested in generating some revenue for my work, but that isn't at the very top of my list. I am in my last year of high school, soon to be going to college, and I am going to major in computer science/software engineering. So I am trying to gain some preliminary experience at home by coding stuff every day. One way of getting this experience is by making this game. So what do you think? What route should I take? What has worked well with other indie games? Thanks in advance.
