  • What influences the kind of RAM a desktop or laptop can support?

    What exactly influences the kind of RAM a desktop or laptop can support? Apart from the clock speed, the maximum amount of RAM the motherboard can handle, the DDR type (1/2/3) and the shape of the module (DIMM for desktops, SO-DIMM for laptops)? I see that in certain cases, such as with the Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9, (and on the Kingston KTD-L3B/4G page) the page displays a set of laptop product numbers. Does the actual model of the laptop also influence the models of RAM it can support? Could, for instance, an Asus K52 work with that particular RAM module, even if it specifies Dell models?

    Hi, I'am runing locally service on port 81 (192.168.1.101) I would like to access server from outside MY.WAN.IP.ADDR:81. Everything is working fine on my local network, However can't access it from outside. Below iptables rules on the router. I am using dd-wrt and asus rt-n16 (everything is setup through standard port range forwarding in dd-wrt ) It might be something obvious, but I don't have any experience with routing.   • Can't boot flash drive on GIGABYTE motherboard

    Situation When I try to boot from my flash drive, my GIGABYTE 970A-UD3 motherboard returns this: Loading Operating System ... Boot error All other motherboards I've tried support booting from that flash drive (and a backup flash drive). The operating systems I tried on both flash drives were created with usb-creator-gtk (Ubuntu USB Startup Disk Creator). I know that the motherboard understands that there is an operating system on the flash drives because when I erase them, it complains in an ALL CAPS RAGE that there isn't an operating system, which is correct. How can I boot a flash drive that's bootable from other motherboards on this motherboard? Qualification This question is not a duplicate of this one because directly writing to the flash drive as an ISO 9660 (dd if=operating_system.iso of=/dev/sdb) still does not have the motherboard recognize the operating system. This question should be a duplicate of this one because I provide more information not provided by that poster. This forum thread has broken links and does not have a solution to my problem. Nobody knows what's going on in this forum thread.

  • Disable click action after letting up a mouse wheel hold scroll in Chrome browser

    I apologize in advance for the confusing title, not sure what the best way to describe this action is. Basically, I am holding down the mouse wheel and then moving the mouse itself up and down to scroll (not actually rotating the mouse wheel forward or backward). This is often the most convenient way to scroll for me. Unfortunately, when I scroll in this way, and then let up the mouse wheel again, it performs a click action, so if the arrow happens to land on a link when I let up the mouse wheel, I end up inadvertently clicking that link. How can I prevent the mouse from performing a click action when I use the mouse wheel to scroll by holding it down and then letting it up when I am done scrolling?     I picked up some adware that adds irrelevant advertisements to Google and Wikipedia. I have scanned with MalwareBytes, Windows Defender (Which is the same as MSE in Windows 8), Ad Aware, Spybot, and McAfee, which found no results. This only occurs in Internet Explorer 10, not in Firefox or Iron. I would like to keep IE10, I think it is a major improvement from previous versions. Any ideas on how to remove the adware?

It is just stalled during the Installing the Upgrades phase - the last commands were "Creating device nodes" Cancel will leave the system in a broken state. What next?

  • Linux, fdisk: change order of partitions

    I have a harddrive with 24 logical partitions on it. Half of them are Linux and half are windows. Current ordering is: 3 Linux partitions; 12 windows partitions; 9 Linux partitions. In this setup, Windows can access any of partition (no limits on partition number), but Linux can't access sda16, sda17 ... Can I change numbering of partitions without moving them on disk? I want to put all Linux partitions to be <16; and windows partitions to be 16, so linux will be able to access all linux partitions. I have fdisk/sfdisk and it sees all partitions.

  • Disable Windows Media Player "media server" network locations

    I'm running Windows 8 and in the Computer menu, I see a huge list of "media server" network locations of many of the PCs in my network (most running Windows 7). Is there a way to either locally disable this so I don't see this list every time, or disable this sharing feature on the other computers? I've tried disabling "Media Streaming options" from the Network and Sharing Center (on my PC), but that had no effect. Another thing I tried was enabling Media Streaming, but then selecting all the found clients and clicking Blocked in the list of found clients. That had no effect in removing the list either. I've also attempted disabling the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, but alas, the list remains. I'm starting to believe there's a magic registry key to unbury and flip to a "1", but all the searching I've done has come up empty.

    I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory.   • Intel D510MO board - 1000Mbit LAN or not?

    The Intel forum seems to be down (signing in fails with connection refused), but perhaps someone here knows the answer. The Intel D510MO product page says that the LAN is 10/100/1000, but when I look at the NM10 chipset it uses, it says it's just 10/100 (and the detailed PDF spec here backs that up pretty definitively). I don't immediately see anything saying the D510MO has a different LAN controller than the NM10's onboard one, and it would seem odd if it did given the purpose of the board (low power, small footprint; integrated). Does this board support 1000Mbit LAN or not? Anyone have direct knowledge of it? Thanks in advance.

  • Vista home basic, "this folder is empty" problem

    When I access my itunes folder in "my music" I see most but not all artist folders, when I access any of them I get "this folder is empty", When in Itunes all music plays and if I right click on a song and click show in folder I can see my full Itunes folder, so far I have done two system restores, scan disk, windows memory scan, defrag and tried ifixit. nothing has worked, I dont understand how I can see two different folders at the same address. Also have checked hidden files settings.

    Why would an external eSata Drive (xSonic with 500Gb notebook Hard Drive) run ok on a Silicon Image based PCI-E to eSata adaptor at about 35MB/s, But then run really slow when plugged into NForce4 Sata socket via cable? I have another version of the problem with Really slow 1MB/s!!! performance on a ASUS P5K Pro Motherboard with E8400 CPU. This time the same card is plugged into a PCI-E socket. The same eSata drive is plugged into the Esata port on the card. All this is running on Windows XP Pro 32bit. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problems??

    Okay, here's a weird problem -- My wife just bought a 2014 Nissan Altima. So, I took her iTunes library and converted the .m4a files to .mp3, since the car audio system only supports .mp3 and .wma. So far so good. Then I copied the files to a DOS FAT-32 formatted USB thumb drive, and connected the drive to the car's USB port, only to find all of the tracks were out of sequence. All tracks begin with a two digit numeric prefix, i.e., 01, 02, 03, etc. So you would think they would be in order. So I called Nissan Connect support and the rep told me that there is a known problem with reading files in the correct order. He said the files are read in the same order they are written. So, I manually copied a few albums with the tracks in a predetermined order, and sure enough he was correct. So I copied about 6 albums for testing, then changed to the top level directory and did a "find . music.txt". Then I passed this file to rsync like this: rsync -av --files-from=music.txt . ../Marys\ Music\ Sequenced/ The files looked like they were copied in order, but when I listed the files in order of modified time, they were in the same sequence as the original files: ../Marys Music Sequenced/Air Supply/Air Supply Greatest Hits ls -1rt 01 Lost In Love.mp3 04 Every Woman In The World.mp3 03 Chances.mp3 02 All Out Of Love.mp3 06 Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You).mp3 05 The One That You Love.mp3 08 I Want To Give It All.mp3 07 Sweet Dreams.mp3 11 Young Love.mp3 So the question is, how can I copy files listed in a file named music.txt, and copy them to a destination, and ensure the modification times are in the same sequence as the files are listed?

  • Why could cause the keypad backlights to spontaneously illuminate on my Palm Treo?

    I have a Palm Treo 680 smart phone. I have noticed recently that when the phone is turned off, the keypad backlights will spontaneously illuminate. This is particularly annoying because it drains the battery life of the Treo -- when I woke up this morning, the battery was completely flat and I had to plug it in to wake it up again. I suspect that this has something to do with the Energy Dimmer application (I have version 2.16 installed). I have disabled this application today to see if it makes the problem go away. Has anyone else had this problem, and do you have any solutions?

  • Stop Cisco AnyConnect from locking down the NIC

    Cisco's VPN crapclients (including the AnyConnect one) have the nasty habit of clobbering all NICs on the system you're using them. The old client had a checkbox in the connection options that allowed you to use other network interfaces while being connected while the AnyConnect client doesn't have any options at all, seemingly. But they both lock down the network interface they are using to connect to the VPN. Since I am forced to use AnyConnect to actually have an internet connection and I like to control a second computer at home via RDP (over the same network interface so far) this doesn't quite work out. With the old client IPv6 still worked just fine, though AnyConnect seems to dislike that as well now. Is there any way to still use the same network interface for LAN access? I actually don't really care about any possible security implications (which might be why Cisco does this) as it's my freaking internet connection and not a secure way of working from home. The trade-off is quite different :-)
