• What software can I use to pinpoint why Windows Server 2003 takes 15 seconds for any operation?

  Ram is about 1/2 in use, four CPUs are all but idle. I tried "Microsoft Server Performance Advisor" with no luck. No entries in the Event Log for hardware failures, etc. And yet I can click on the start menu and wait 15 seconds for any new attempt. Launching software takes 30 seconds to respond. The server has an 8 drive WD RE 250 gig each Dell Perc 6 Sata raid array with Intel gigabit network cards. Anyone have any software titles that could analyze what is going wrong with this server?

• Are Plesk server backups useful?

  I'm working for a startup now, and I'm the programmer. Because of our small team size, I'm also handling the server management for now (until we get a dedicated server administrator.) I've never used Plesk before, and the server we're using (a Media Temple Dedicated Virtual server) had it installed when I got here. One of my first jobs was to set up backups: Plesk was already running it's nightly server-wide backups. I created a small script to dump the web app, it's DBs and any assets, tar them, store them, and then copy them to another small server we have (to backup the backups.) But, we're constantly running into hard drive space issues because of the Plesk backups. And I'm wondering, are they useful? If I have the web app and all of it's assets, I could easily enough get another server up and running. Do we need to keep running Plesk's backups? Thoughts?

• Prevent Win7 boot loader from taking over the WinXP boot loader

  My setup: 1 physical hard drive (500gb divided equally into 2 partitions) Windows XP Partition (Current OS) Empty Partition where I will be installing Windows 7 My question is how do I prevent the Windows7 boot loader from taking over my WindowsXP boot loader when installing the new OS ? The reason I am asking is because I already have a ghosted backup of my WinXP partition and if I ever need to restore my xp partition using that backup, would it not overwrite the Windows7 boot loader that was placed in the XP partition with the one from the backup, thus making windows 7 unable to boot. Also what would happen if I decided to delete the Windows XP partition altogether somewhere down the road and along with it the Win7 boot loader that was placed there, wouldn't that cause the system not to boot at all.. To avoid these issues, I simply want to make sure that BOTH the Win7 and WinXP boot loaders are available on their respective partitions and they do not interfere with each other in any way. • Clicking hyperlinks in Email messages becomes painfully slow

  Running Windows 7 (RC, 64 bit). Suddenly, today, after months without a problem, clicking on links has become extremely slow. I've noticed this in two places. (1) clicking hyperlinks in Outlook email messages, which launches Firefox, takes around a minute. Launching Firefox by itself is instantaneous - I have an SSD drive and a very fast CPU. (2) opening Word documents attached to Outlook email messages also takes a surprisingly long time. The only thing these two might have in common is that they use the DDE mechanism, if I'm not mistaken, to send a DDE open command to the application. Under Windows XP this problem could sometimes be fixed by unchecking the "Use DDE" checkbox in the file type mapping, however, I can't find any equivalent under Windows 7. • database on SSD: data only or the DBM program too?

  I plan on moving the data I use for statistical analysis (100-ish Gb) onto an SSD. The data is either sqlite single-file db's, or postgresql-managed data. The SSD is 240 Gb, 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Should I reserve that space for the data only, or would it be a good idea to install the operating system (Mac OS X) and the application directory (Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and the like) on the SSD too? And would it make a substantial speed difference whether I also install the postgresql binaries on the SSD? I have plenty of other space (another 300Gb hard-drive, and a 1Tb one). Don't know the features of the non-SSD drives, though they're our standard equipment on all Macs, and they're definitely OK. Thanks.

• Optimising bare-metal hypervisor installation

  what is the best way to install a bare metal hypervisor (i.e. to host multiple VM's)? I spoke to a friend and he is using a HP server to host all his VMs with VMware ESXi, but he installed the VMWARE esxi software on a flash card. He can then use his full hard disk capacity from each drive for the VMs. Is this a pretty standard setup when configuring a bare-metal hypervisor? How do you guys do it, and what is best?

• Ubuntu + latest samba version, symlinks no longer work on share mounted in windows

  I just apt-getted (apt-got?) the latest software for my Ubuntu 9.10 linux box, and I noticed that samba was the included in the update. After the install, the symlinks in my home directory no longer work when mounted as a drive in my linux box. They worked literally seconds before I did the update. All my normal directories work just fine. Viewing the directory listing on the command line, all the files, dirs & links have the exact same permissions, yet this is the error I get: Location is not available L:\LinkDir is not accessible. Access is denied. I looked on the forums, and i saw this option for the smb.conf follow symlinks = yes wide symlinks = yes unix extensions = no I put those in, but they had no effect. Has anyone had this problem yet?

• How do I make more available space on a Time Machine hard disk?

  I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard, and made some other changes that have caused my next Time Machine backup to be quite large. Previous to the upgrade my backup drive had filled up, so Time Machine was deleting old backups to make room for new ones. When Time Machine started the first backup after the upgrade, it displayed a message that it was freeing up space. But it wasn't able to free up enough: (The disk has 320 GB capacity.) How can I free up more space on the disk (without reformatting or deleting all the existing backups)? I don't want to recklessly delete files and take the risk of confusing Time Machine.

• Sql Server differential backup : Simple vs Full recovery model

  I need to better understand the backup process under SQL Server 2008. Since drive space is a kind of matter for us and we want to have a better disaster recovery solution, I decided that we will implement differential backups throughout the day (every hour). Am I right to think that if I keep the recovery model of my databases to Simple, the differential backup will be almost the same size as Full Backup (too big to make one every hour) ? I already tried to switch to Full recovery and it seemed to have fixed the issue (differential backups were way smaller). I heard that the recovery model must be set to Full to use Log backups (to the minute recovery etc., but we don't need that) but never about differential backups. So, is the recovery model really having an impact on differential backups or am I missing something ? Thank you

• How to keep Windows 7 from sleeping while scanning the PC.

  So, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials lately. And it usually takes a couple hours or more for it to full scan my hard drive. Because of that, I commonly leave it scanning while I go do something else. Problem is: 10 minutes later, windows 7 goes to sleep, and the scan is (obviously) paused. That's What I'd like to stop happening. So far, the only way I've been able to avoid it was to create a power plan, and switch to it while away, to keep the PC from sleeping. Problem is that I have to keep switching power plans and I'd like the PC to be able to go to sleep in case MSE finishes scanning and I'm still not back. Maybe I'm just asking for too much, but I've been surprised by the users here plenty of times already. So let me know if you know how to keep the PC from sleeping while MSE is scanning. Thanks

• Picasa v.3.6.2 for Mac is suddenly very slow - what are the implications of rebuilding my database?

  Recently Picasa v3.6.2 for Mac has become very sluggish - mainly noticable for any (non destructive) changes made to photos such as starring an image. This action used to be nearly immediate, but recently I've found it can take 1-3 seconds for Picasa to register the change, and become responsive again. I'm considering rebuilding my Picasa database as per these instructions - however I'm concerned I may lose any pre-existing non-destructive (unsaved) edits, along with Picasa albums that I have created. Curious if anyone has experienced Picasa sluggishness with the latest version and/or what their results have been from rebuilding their database. My last resort is to SuperDuper my drive and then rebuild the database, so I can always restore it if I lose critical data.

• How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

• Why does some of the songs in my iTunes library stop prematurely and go to the next song?

  For the couple of weeks a whole bunch of the songs from my iTunes library stop early and skip to the next song (just as if it was at the end of the song). Although the point where it skips varies for each song (for one song it is 2:32, another is 2:46), it will always skip at the same point for each song. A while back I ran BPMer and, although it crashed half way through, it did not appear to corrupt my music the way it is now. A few days ago I backed up my iTunes library and reformatted my hard drive (for a completely unrelated issue) and reinstalled OS X from scratch. The problem was happening before and after the reinstall. This problem also persists when the music is synced across to my iPod touch running 3.0. Listening to the same troublesome songs in my iPod causes them to end prematurely. However, I can listen to the whole song using Quicklook, so the problem must be with my iTunes library or something.

  I think the steps are something like: Install DD-WRT on a router with an external hard-drive Install Optware to get Samba Upgrade to Samba 3.6 (the link shows Samba 3.5, but using the NSLU2 optware packages, you can get 3.6 with built-in SMB2.0) ...then a miracle occurs... Then you can use SMB2.0 to connect to your share What is step 4? I can't find it on forums, etc. Am using Microsoft Network monitor to check for SMB2.0 connection, I'm on Windows 7 and have tried network connections on wireless and gigabit wired to the router. No joy. I doubt it matters, but to get ahead of the questions: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/26/10) big (SVN revision 15508M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko) on Cisco/Linksys E3000

• Can't use sudo on ubuntu

  After update and reboot I get 'user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.' when trying to call sudo. The problem is that I don't have a GRUB with revovery option. I try to boot from live cd but I'm not able to access the system partition, only the partition with grub. Can I somehow enable the recovery mode in GRUB? Or boot throw the live CD from first hard drive with some option for that?

• Lenovo B460e laptop Unknown filesystem

  I got a Lenovo B460e laptop yesterday (given by the TN Govt). It has WINDOWS 7 Pro Set it up the way I liked it... all software drivers and all. I wanted extra drives, so I entered the WINDOWS diskadmin and changed my partition setup, by splitting and I did the partition setup in the installing proces, so I split my harddisk into 4 parts. So far so good. When I rebooted, I entered GRUB RESCUE MODE. In this mode I know the only command “ls”. Which gives like (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1). This Lap does not have a CD drive, otherwise I could have formatted the OS and installed a new OS using WINDOWS 7 CD. Now I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Any idea on how to fix this?

  I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. • Need help solving "Disk Error Press any key to restart" after blue screen in XP.

  I have had a couple of BSOD's lately and after the last one I got the disk error message. The disk shows up during the BIOS portion of the boot. It is in a Dell Precision 690 so the F12 key gives me a boot menu. I can boot from the utility partition, and if I specifically select the hard drive from the boot menu it will boot fine. Any ideas why if I just try to do an unattended boot, it give the error listed in the title?

• Supermicro SmartOS setup issue with HDDs

  I'm trying to setup SmartOS on my new Supermicro server (SYS-6027R-N3RF4+). I have 8 HDDs + 2 SSDs installed in the hot-swappable drive bays. I have not configured the Intel RAID controller on the machine (it shows no RAID configured, and lists all 8 HDDs). When I boot SmartOS from my USB key for the first time and get to the initial zpool creation I only see 2 disks listed. How can I tell which two drives are being referenced? How can I get SmartOS to recognize all 8+2 drives? Is there a BIOS setting I need to adjust?

  I just turned on Bitlocker on my development laptop for the first time (Windows 8.1) and encrypted both SSDs. When I started SQL Server Enterprise Manager, it could not connect to the default instance on the local machine. Does this not work? I have been googling for an hour and only found anecdotal evidence, but no solid information. Just to clarify - I am not interested in encrypting a database.   I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work? • Increase backup speed, Backup Exec 2010 - QNAP TS419U+ NAS

  We have a QNAP NAS and the network shares are being backed up by Backup Exec 2010 over SMB. We can't install the remote agent on the NAS as it has an ARM processor and, as far as I am aware, there is no compatible agent. Do you have any suggestions on any faster method of backing up these shares as opposed to the current scenario? Currently the network bandwidth is not the issue, it seems that this access method is just not able to go any quicker. We've also added the NAS shares to the start of the selection list, but we're still running into 18 hours total backup time (total amount of data on the NAS is roughly 650GB). Any comments and/or suggestions welcome. EDIT: Data is being pulled from the NAS by Backup Exec to a LTO4 tape drive

I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? I know that this is not a shopping site - but before any moderator rushes to close this question - please note that I am not asking "where do I buy this laptop" - merely what laptop fits this specs.
