• "Verifying DMI Pool" hang caused by raid array..

  Hi Experts, I have a problem, I obtained a new server with 4 hard drives (2 500 gig, 2 two TB), and an adeptec RAID card. I arranged them in two arrays with RAID 1 (500 gigs together as primary and the 2 TB drives for lots of data). When both arrays are configured, the server hangs while booting at message "Verifying DMI Pool", however if I remove the second array from the configuration the server boots fine. I have checked they are both on different channels, I have disabled all other peripherals from the boot menu and ensured the hard drive is #1. I have booted into the linux rescue mode and checked that it is reading both arrays fine. What else could be causing these problems? Thanks

• How do I burn Xubuntu Live CD

  I downloaded the 600+ MB Xubunto ISO. Burnt it to a DVD using Nero Burning Rom, as a Bootable DVD. My bootup sequence won't detect XUbuntu and still only detects windows on my Hard Drive even after I set my BIOS to boot from the CDROM first. How do I burn the Live CD with Nero? I'm thinking maybe I should extract the contents and then burn the folder as data to my DVD. P.S: I only have DVDs lying around.

• 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

  Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient. Let me know if you think I missed something thing please.

• Can I grant permissions on files in windows 7 using a security identifier from another machine

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). • How to go about scheduling a task in windows 7 to change wireless connection

  This may or not be something that can be done. I cannot find anything on the wireless connection manager built into windows 7 let alone methods for passing params into it. Problem is as follows: I have 2 wireless routers. One provides internet access, the other provides sole access to the local network. Every day at 4am the main system creates a backup in 2 locations. One is a External usb drive, the other is a location on the network. This is all cool if it is remembered to change over to the local network router before leaving. But if it is forgotten the roof will collapse, the walls will burn, and I will be... well you get the idea. Solution: there is already a custom event that fires a automated backup program at 4am everyday. I need someway to force the wireless network to use the correct connection at say 3:58am everyday. Any ideas????

• What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

  Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?) • Way to auto resize photos before uploaded to cloud service?

  I love using auto syncing services to have my photos taken with my smartphone stored on a cloud storage service. One problem though is that the photos are uploaded in high resolution and takes up a lot of space on the drive. I wonder if any one knows of a service/strategy to have the auto uploaded photo resized to have it occupy less space when auto stored? That is, without me having to take the photos with lesser quality, I still want photos taken with the highest quality since I may take a photo I really like.

• Can't double click files to open them in inDesign (CS5)

  I cannot open a file unless I open inDesign (the program) and then do File-Open If I double click, it starts to open, then just hangs forever. AFTER I close it, and look in the directory where they're saved, I see a (temporary?) "lock" file. Now I can double click the original file and it opens just fine. However, now when I close iD it deletes the file and the whole process starts again... I have tried updating the software, uninstalled COMPLETELY and reinstalled, tried a brand new Win7 install. These files are all saved on a network drive, the computer is a new quad-core Dell with 12GB of RAM and a fresh x64 Win7 install on the SSD. Does not happen with other programs.

• Thunderbird gives " Not enough disk space " alert, after trying to download more emails ( Win 7, 64 bit )

  So, today I have installed Mozilla Thunderbird 24.2.0 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. It was downloading emails, until it hit an error. An alert showed up saying : "There is not enough disk space to download new messages. Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and compacting your mail folders, and then try again." Now, disk space is not a problem, there is enough free space left ( almost 50 % of the drive ). How to stop the alert and continue downloading ?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Virtual Machine as a web server. I've mounted the W:/ drive in Win 7 to my /www folder in Ubuntu. I can read the files, but I'm not able to write to the files. In Samba, I have created the following user: <www-data> = "<www-data>" And given guest ok for the www folder: [www] comment = Ubuntu WWW area path = /var/www browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 ;directory mask = 0775 force user = www-data force group = www-data I've also run sudo chmod -R 755 www to make ensure correct rw access. What am I missing in order to get write access to my ubuntu files from Windows?

• Write permission when mounting Windows shares from Ubuntu

  I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents, but when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file). What gives?

• Intel Rapid Storage Technology service always crashes

  I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a system based on an Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard; the storage is configured for RAID mode; there is a single SSD drive for the O.S. and two 4-TB disks in a RAID 1 setup for the data. I've installed the latest version of Intel's Rapid Storage Technology drivers, 12.8.0.1016. The program complains about its service not being running, and the service is actually stopped; if I try to start it, it crashes. I've already tried reinstalling the package, but nothing changed. All the disks work correctly, but the RST program is unusable. How can I fix this?

• Netgear WNR1000 WiFi speed

  I have Netgear WNR1000 150N, Macbook Pro 13" with Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0, Network connection 60mbps When I connect through the cable I easily get around 60mbps. When I go through the WiFi it's capable to get only 32mbps at tops. Any ideas why is that? Is that my router limitation or maybe my WiFi card? If it is routers fault what router would you suggest.   Hello. I have a dedicated server, and will be installing SQL Server. However, my hosting company said they can connect an external CD ROM drive and give me KVM over IP to install SQL Server. My question is, what is IPKVM, and how does it work? Do I need special hardware or software on my side to use it....or do I just connect via remote desktop? Also, why can't I remote into my server through remote desktop instead of using KVM over IP?

• Clicking hyperlinks in Email messages becomes painfully slow

  Running Windows 7 (RC, 64 bit). Suddenly, today, after months without a problem, clicking on links has become extremely slow. I've noticed this in two places. (1) clicking hyperlinks in Outlook email messages, which launches Firefox, takes around a minute. Launching Firefox by itself is instantaneous - I have an SSD drive and a very fast CPU. (2) opening Word documents attached to Outlook email messages also takes a surprisingly long time. The only thing these two might have in common is that they use the DDE mechanism, if I'm not mistaken, to send a DDE open command to the application. Under Windows XP this problem could sometimes be fixed by unchecking the "Use DDE" checkbox in the file type mapping, however, I can't find any equivalent under Windows 7. • Changing the partition icon for Boot Camp

  Hey guys, I've installed Windows 7 for a dual-boot setup on my new Core i7 MacBook Pro. Now, just for the looks, I'd like to change the volume icon. The partition is in NTFS format. I remember that in the past (with Leopard), you just had to add a .VolumeIcon.icns file at the root of a volume to set its icon. It seems this trick wore off with Snow Leopard. It apparently still works with CDs and DVDs, but hard drives keep that old, boring drive icon, no matter how lovely the .VolumeIcon.icns file I've put at the root. How can I change that?

  I'm looking for freeware, or preferably open source CD/DVD cataloging applications. Right now I'm testing http://www.gentibus.com/us/Download.htm, anyone got any other suggestions? I'd like the software to be actively maintained and not released and left behind. I'm looking for software which allows me to catalog, sort, search my DVDs/CDs into databases. Like I've 1 group of 10 dvds only with Fonts etc. I want to read the content into a Database called "Fonts'". Another group of 5 DVD's with Stockimages, and I want to read all 5 DVDs into the Database "Stock Images". Then I want this software to be able to open Database "Stock Images", I want to be able to browse DVD 1 - 5 and to see DVD 1 - 5's contents without having the DVD's in the optical drive.

I'm backing up to a local NAS and I'm getting this error: Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options Check your backup Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could be because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400 MB of free space and try again. Backup time: 2009-09-07 14:48 Backup location: \VANGELIS\Shared\Backup\lennon\ Error code: 0x81000015 My local hard disk has 290GB free and my NAS has 200GB free. Any ideas what might be wrong?

• Why does the EFI shell not detect my Windows DVD?

  I'm currently looking into (U)EFI for the first time and am already really confused. I insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise disc into the DVD-ROM and boot into the EFI shell. The shell will automatically list all detected devices, which are: blk0 :CDRom - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master)/CDROM(Entry0) blk1 :BlockDevice - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master) To my understanding, it should have already detected the filesystem on blk0 and should have mounted it as fs0. Why is that not happening? If I insert a USB drive, it gets mounted just fine. The board is an Intel S5520HC in case that makes a difference.

• Acer Aspire 5719 with Windows XP does not boot

  Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5710 which came pre-loaded with Windows Vista. O/S has been changed to Win SXP SP2 and was working fine till today. The laptop starts up and then hangs (does not reach till the Windows screen). Have tried the following Repair with XP CD. Re-install with XP CD (In both cases the error "No hard disk" is displayed.) Tried F5/F8 to boot with other options. Guess the hard-disk is not being recognised. The 160 Gb SATA disk is shown as IDE0 in the Phoenix Bios. There is no floppy drive. Any suggestions. • How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard server on any virtual machine with DMG?

  I'm trying to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server on VirtualBox. I know this is duplicated question, however another questions have no fine answer. I'm trying to install on VirtualBox on iMac. So this is pretty legal. But the problem is I want to install with DMG image. Because installing DVD drive is too slow, and I have to install Mac OS X many times. And taking DVD disc from box is annoying too. But VirtualBox fails installing. It couldn't load kernel. It installs well with DVDs. Is there any way to do this? I'm considering using other VM solutions like Parallels or VMWare if they can support install from DMG images well. If you know about them certainly, please let me know.

• Get songs off of Windows iPod and onto a Mac

  I have been using iTunes on a Dell running Windows XP to sync about 60 gigs of songs with my old school iPod. Well, the Dell's hard drive died the other day, and the only place that I have my music is on the iPod (I do have the CDs, but really don't want to have to re-rip 60 gigs of music). So, now I have a shiny new MacBook Pro. Is there a way to get my songs off of my iPod and onto the MacBook? I googled, and found Senuti. But, I'm leery of accidentally formating the iPod and losing my songs, and I can't tell if it is Snow Leopard compatible yet. Has anyone recently gone through this process? Please provide suggestions for copying songs from an iPod formated to work with Windows onto a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. Thanks!

• Lost contact with my NAS after changing its IP

  I did some brain-dead reconfiguring of my D-Link DNS-323 NAS some days ago. I have a home network where each computer gets a dynamically allocated IP address starting at 192.168.1.100. The irritating point (for me at least) was that the NAS changed IP if the power went down or I turned off the router. I then had to remap a drive-letter to point to the new IP address of the NAS. To remedy that I configured the NAS to have a static IP, 192.168.0.10. I had no good reason to choose that IP, other than I found it in a user manual for the NAS. After I changed the IP and rebooted the NAS it disappeared from the network and was never to be found again. Now I have a black brick standing in my home, looking good, but "dead". Could anyone point me in a direction which helps me solve this problem? I have about 100gb worth of pic of my children on this brick so I really want it back :-) Sincerely,

  (1) Is it true that the new GUID Partition Table scheme allows a user to partition a drive however he/she like, outside of the traditional MBR "4 primaries or 3 primaries + 1 extension" paradigm? If so, are there any limitations to the GPT? If my assumption is wrong, what are its advantages over the MBR model? (2) I'm getting a new laptop this week and will be installing Ubuntu (and, more generally, Linux) for the first time ever. Does Ubunutu come pre-configured with MBR as a default? If so, how do I get Ubuntu w/ GPT? If not, how do I specify GPT over MBR? Thanks!

  My computer specs: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Socket: LGA775 CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (2M Cache, 1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) After I bought new hard drive (Western Digital 250GB, 7200rpm, 32MB, Sata III, Caviar Blue, WD2500AAKX) I saw that my processor temperature started to raise to higher value then before. Now while surfing internet it goes to 70°C. Cleaned my motherboard - nothing; cleaned fan - nothing; replaced thermal paste - nothing; replaced thermal paste with care - still nothing. So I went to friend just to check if he doesn't have any spear fan, and he did. But with fan he had another processor that he didn't need and he wanted to give it to me, but I told him that I will think about this. So my CPU, he's CPU (Intel® Pentium® D Processor 820 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)). Question: which proccesor is better for gaming and for recording games?
