  I have a rather annoying issue with my Windows 7 computer whereby it seems to take ages to delete, move or copy folders, even when they are empty. The problem is intermittent, to make matters worse. It just says "Discovering items..." for anything up to a couple of minutes before eventually doing what its told. Any suggestions on where to look to stop this happening? I have tried disabling antivirus realtime scanning to rule that out as the root cause.

• Icons in windows 8 changed automatically

  The icons of my folders in Windows 8 have changed automatically ! Now it is similar to that of the Unknown File Type icon. My C: drive icon and some icons in the Explorer-Home menu had also changed, but they became normal after a restart. But the folder icons (Medium Size) don't change.   I want to keep icons for shortcuts in thumbnail view. eg: my pics folder is in thumbnail, but I want to easily see my familiar icons for shortcuts to various outside folders I drag the pics into, amongst the hundreds of pics and subfolders within my pics (which display the same as shortcuts at a glance) I had it like this on my last machine but I can't remember what I had to do. • Missing pictures in folder

  I had a folder with some pictures, somehow these pictures are "missing" and I cannot see them anymore. The strange thing is that if I use the "preview" view in Explorer (the one that shows the tiny icons of the folder contents), the folder preview shows these pictures as if they were inside. Once I enter the folder, they are not there anymore. I tried showing hidden files and folders, that doesn't help. Any ideas on how to show or recover those files? I'm using Windows XP.

  Suppose I have two folders, dir1 and dir2, with deveral files in each of them, and all the files in dir1 are named like "ExampleFileName.flac" and all the files in dir2 are named as "ExampleFileName.m4a" - basically their names are the same except the extension. What I need to do is transfer all of the metadata for each of the files somehow - even though their codecs are different. • Is there a way to password protect a windows application on Windows 7 without changing the exe?

  I want to password-protect a few applications (not just files/folders) on Windows 7, such that, there is no change to the protected application's .exe file itself. Since the .exe files can't be changed, "Empathy" and "Protect Exe" can't be used as they change the .exe file. I tried using WinGuard Pro and LockThis! also but they don't work for Microsoft Outlook and some other apps (that I need). Is it possible at all? Please help.

  Hello all-- so, a DLL is similar to a folder, but it allows for multiple programs/executables to access it at once, thus conserving memory (I think). What is Mac's equivalent of a DLL? I was looking through the Google Chrome folders inside ~/Library/Application Support, and instead of the regular Windows Default.dll there was just a folder, "Default" as a regular file, with contents, I assume, would regularly be inside the DLL. Does the Mac equivalent provide the same function?
