• Snort's problems in generating alert from Darpa 1998 intrusion detection dataset.

  Hi. I’m working on DARPA 1998 intrusion detection dataset. When I run snort on this dataset (outside.tcpdump file), snort don’t generate complete list of alerts. It means snort start from last few hours of tcpdump file and generate alerts about this section of file and all of packets in first hours are ignored. Another problem in generatin alert is in time stamp of generated alerts. This means when I run snort on a specific day of dataset, snort insert incorrect time stamp for that alert. • g++ SSE intrinsics dilemma - value from intrinsic "saturates"

  Hi, I wrote a simple program to implement SSE intrinsics for computing the inner product of two large (100000 or more elements) vectors. The program compares the execution time for both, inner product computed the conventional way and using intrinsics. Everything works out fine, until I insert (just for the fun of it) an inner loop before the statement that computes the inner product. However, given that arr1 and arr2 (the two floating point vectors) are loaded with a value 2.5, the length of the array is 100,000, the result in both cases should be 6.25e+10. The results I get are: Results: result_Conventional = 6.25e+10 result_Intrinsics = 5.36871e+08 This is not all. It seems that the value returned from the function that uses intrinsics "saturates" at the value above. I tried putting other values for the elements of the array and different sizes too. But it seems that any value above 1.0 for the array contents and any size above 1000 meets with the same value we see above. Initially, I thought it might be because all operations within SSE are in floating point, but floating point should be able to store a number that is of the order of e+08. I am trying to see where I could be going wrong but cannot seem to figure it out. I am using g++ version: g++ (GCC) 4.4.1 20090725 (Red Hat 4.4.1-2). Any help on this is most welcome. • Save object states in .data or attr - Performance vs CSS?

  In response to my answer yesterday about rotating an Image, Jamund told me to use .data() instead of .attr() First I thought that he is right, but then I thought about a bigger context... Is it always better to use .data() instead of .attr()? I looked in some other posts like what-is-better-data-or-attr or jquery-data-vs-attrdata The answers were not satisfactory for me... So I moved on and edited the example by adding CSS. I thought it might be useful to make a different Style on each image if it rotates. My style was the following: .rp[data-rotate="0"] { border:10px solid #FF0000; } .rp[data-rotate="90"] { border:10px solid #00FF00; } .rp[data-rotate="180"] { border:10px solid #0000FF; } .rp[data-rotate="270"] { border:10px solid #00FF00; } Because design and coding are often separated, it could be a nice feature to handle this in CSS instead of adding this functionality into JavaScript. Also in my case the data-rotate is like a special state which the image currently has. So in my opinion it make sense to represent it within the DOM. I also thought this could be a case where it is much better to save with .attr() then with .data(). Never mentioned before in one of the posts I read. But then i thought about performance. Which function is faster? And now I am confused! This test showed that .data() is slower then .attr() !?!! Why is that so? First I thought it is because of a different jQuery library so I edited it and saved the new one. But the result wasn't changing... So now my questions to you: Why are there some differences in the performance in these two examples? Would you prefer to use data- HTML5 attributes instead of data, if it represents a state? Although it wouldn't be needed at the time of coding? Why - Why not? Now depending on the performance: Would performance be an argument for you using .attr() instead of data, if it shows that .attr() is better? Although data is meant to be used for .data()? UPDATE 1: I did see that without overhead .data() is much faster.   I tried installing a trial version of SAP NetWeaver 7.1 on Windows Vista on my laptop but I couldn't succeed. Then I tried installing SAP Web Application Server 6.20. • Webmin and/or port 10000 not working

  I've recently installed Webmin on a Ubuntu server but I can't get it to work. I asked a recent question about saving iptables but it turns out you don't need to "save" iptables changes. Anyway, I still can't get Webmin working after opening the port up: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 10000 -j ACCEPT It seems that either the command is not opening up port 10000, or there is a separate problem with Webmin. The IP address works fine and we can view web sites on the server, but https://[ip]:10000/ (or http) doesn't work.

I am having a website which as of now do not have any log in facility for the visitors, now we are developing a new application so that the visitors can create account on the website. the best example you can think of is of any telecom service provider, they have their webiste and now is creating a login facility for it's customers so the users can create an account and can subscribe for ebill sort of facilties. Hope the situation is clear now. for this particular application, i intend to have a web server, an application server, a DB server, one SMTP server and one AD server(for authentication of users and for saving the profiles also). My question here starts on AD front, here do i need AD DS or AD LDS here, what i need from AD is 1) provide user authentication, 2) provide role based access. this is my query. hope i'll get the answer very soon.

  Hi all, I've been using Google Voice on my n900 and it works reasonably well, but DTMF tones do not work whatsoever. According to this page, it is fixed and has been for quite some time. https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5505 Has anyone had any luck with SIP on the n900 and DTMF tones? An earlier version of Skype on the n900 didn't support DTMF, but that was fixed. I would have thought this bug would have been fixed for some time now. Thanks, Walter

• Excel 2003 charts not looking right in 2007

  I'm not exactly sure this goes here but I don't know where else to look for help. I have some Excel files containing charts made with Excel 2003. When I open the file in Excel 2007 and save it (non 2007) is messes up the charts. However, when in Excel 2007 and I Save as a .xlsx type the charts don't mess up. Is there any help for me to be able to not have the charts mess up when simply saving the 2003 file with Excel 2007? Hope that's confusing. Thanks.

• ESXi and Windows Server CPU parking

  For those that don't know, CPU parking is a feature in recent Windows Server releases that allows Windows to pretty much drop a CPU core to zero use, and having nothing use it. It's been introduced as a power-saving measure. There's more detail about it here, amongst other places. However what I'm curious about is whether this matter on a virtualised guest - or is CPU parking more of a hindrance than a help, given that the physical CPUs are managed by ESXi, not Windows, and that a parked CPU is less likely to deal with traffic unless the scheduler deems there's enough work to unpark the CPU? I've not found anything about this - I do suspect it will be very much based on a given workload, but I've not seen any discussion (unlike, say, whether hyper-threading has any effect, which seems to be discussed regularly). Whilst I do understand the "test with your workload" I was wondering if there was any advice/guidelines out there that I've missed.

  Is that possible to bind all available public ip addresses on a server to one Postfix instance as its outgoing ip pool and let it choose a random ip or specified ip from the pool each time it sends out an email? If above is not possible, can it be configured to listen on one public ip address per instance and each time it delivers a message, it use the binded one as outgoing ip address.

I'm also trying -i since that seems to be more akin to what a WinXP client would try to do, based on /var/log/messages. • Windows Network Load Balancing on ESX Cluster with Dell PowerConnect stacks

  We recently switched out our Cisco 6500 core switch for a pair of Dell PowerConnect 6248 stacks. Since then, our Network Load Balanced Sharepoint, which runs on two virtual machines on an ESX cluster has been behaving very poorly. The symptoms are that opening and saving documents stored in sharepoint takes a very very long time. There are no errors showing up on the Sharepoint servers or SQL server, just a lot of annoyed users. Initially I thought there was no way NLB could cause this, but as soon as we repointed the DNS records for our intranet to the ip address of one of the web front ends, the problems disappeared. We suspect there is an issue related to multicast in the Dell configs - NLB is configured for multicast, but not IGMP. Has anyone got a similar set up to us and fixed this sort of issue? Sharepoint on VMware ESX, with Dell PowerConnect switches.

• Which process is using my NAS?

  I have a nas connected to my cluster. The NAS holds all our home directories. When I did a set of experiments last week, saving a 1 GB file to the nas took around 30 seconds. If i do the same to a local disk it takes 18 seconds. But when I tried doing the same process today, it takes 150 seconds. I am unsure what is the problem . Can someone help me pointout the issue? Is it possible to find out which process is accessing the NAS or how much NAS bandwidth is getting used ? Thanks for your help. -Sethu

• Natively open .doc or .odt file in LaTex

  I have looked at ways to convert word or open office text files to LaTex format, and those have been addressed on SU here and here. These will work, but I'd rather have a native single-step solution. Does anyone know of any module or add-on for LaTex that will let one open .doc and/or .odt files without the use of third-party conversion tools? It would be ideal if it would allow for editing and saving in the same format. If it makes any difference, I am using LaTex Editor in Windows.

• Windows installer constantly asking for Word CD

  My daughter uses Word and at some point in the past tried to install a feature which needed the install CD. She no longer has the CD, figured she could live without the feature and cancelled the install. However, every time she boots the computer it tries to resume the install and asks for the CD. All you have to do is hit cancel but it seems a bit annoying to me to have to do that each time you boot. How can I get it to permanently abort the install?

  I don't believe this has been asked before, and I'm curious, Is there any way to change the default font in MS Word 2010 beta? Or MS Word 2007? I'm getting really tired of changing fonts every time I write a document. I simply don't like the Calibri font and change it every time... and it's getting annoying. Thanks.

• DNS "recursion not available" using a Cisco AnyConnect VPN connection

  Does anyone have experience with configuring Cisco AnyConnect VPN? We have a problem with client DNS name resolution when connected over VPN. To me, it looks as if the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client intercepts DNS queries from the clients. Can someone confirm that the AnyConnect VPN client in fact does this (intercepts DNS traffic)? Where is this configured on the VPN server?
