  I have two machines - one is running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and the other is running Windows 7 Starter Edition (32-bit). The Ubuntu machine is connected to the Internet via the eth0 interface. That machine also has a wireless network interface (wlan0) that is currently functioning as an ad-hoc network. I can connect to the ad-hoc network just fine with the Windows machine but each time I wish to do so, I must manually initiate the connection and enter the password. Is there some way to instruct Windows to automatically connect to this network (an option I have for standard wireless networks but not ad-hoc networks)?

  When I bought a new computer, I reinstalled windows on the larger hard drive it came with, but kept the old hard drive as well. I'm keeping the old Windows installation on the hard drive in case I need saved passwords or other data only accessible after signing in. On the boot screen, it gives me the option to boot into the installation I'm currently using, or the "recovered" installation. Attempting to boot into the second one fails anyway. Is there a way I can automatically boot into this installation while still maintaining the possibility of booting into the old installation?

• Can I make Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx make the file I just opened be the top window automatically?

  When I open an image file in Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx Mountain Lion 10.8.4 via the File Open menu, it does not automatically make that image the top window, requiring that I then find that window via the Window menu. Very jarring UX! Is there a way to modify this behavior so that it behaves like most GUI applications and brings the document just opened to the fore? Is this a bug in Gimp 2.8? Interestingly in my Ubuntu 12.04 with Gimp 2.6.12 this is not a problem. Since I haven't used Gimp much at all until this month, I don't know if this is a new problem or not.

• Automatically download files in Internet Explorer without getting prompted to Save / Cancel?

  I am currently using IE7 with XP SP3. When a webpage download with unknown file type loads, I get a prompt asking me what I want to do with the file. My options are FIND SAVE CANCEL. How do I make it so that I don't get this popup prompt, but Internet explorer automatically downloads the file into a directory I choose without asking? PS. I have already tried Tools Internet Options Security Internet Custom Level Downloads Disable/Enable/Enable, but this doesn't help. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have to use IE. I'm using it in connection with other proprietary software based on IE and its settings. And yes I'm aware it's not a great browser. (This is not for strictly personal use in the browsing sense. )

  I just setup django-sphinx, and it is working beautifully. I am now able to search my model and get amazing results. The one problem is that I have to build the index by hand using the indexer command. That means every time I add new content, I have to manually hit the command line to rebuild the search index. That is just not acceptable. I could make a cron job that automatically runs the indexer command every so often, but that's far from optimal. New data won't be indexed until the cron runs again. In addition, the indexer will run unnecessarily most times as my site doesn't have data being added very often. How do I set it up so that the Sphinx index will automatically rebuild itself whenever data is added to or modified in a searchable django model?

  Hi I have a MacBook connecting to the Internet from behind various routers from time to time (home, office, etc). All of the routers support UPNP. I need to allow a co-worker to SSH into the machine, without configuring each router each time to forward port 22 to the MacBook. Is there any way to get the MacBook to use UPNP (or some other method) to automatically configure any supporting router that it is behind to forward port 22 to itself? That would allow the co-worker to SSH into the MacBook but just knowing its external IP, which is easy.

  I have a batch file that copies files to a network location on WebDAV. The address looks something like this: \\xxxxxxxxx.net@SSL@2078\DavWWWRoot When I restart my computer, the batch file doesn't work and says "Access denied". Before a restart, it works, but it doesn't after the computer restarts. The problem is that it requires me to put in the username and password used to access the server. I have to browse to the server in File Explorer and sign in first. Even if I select the "Remember password" check box, it doesn't work. How can I get it to automatically sign in? I don't want to have to do this every time.

  I remember reading on the ubuntu forums some time ago about a program to automatically check configuration changes into version control for you. It was (of course) not Ubuntu-specific. I'm pretty sure it used git, though it may have been svn, or perhaps even able to work with multiple different VCSs. My Googling has turned up nothing, and I'd rather not roll my own script if someone has already done this well. Of course I could just manually check things in, but there are reasons I'd like it done automatically. (I'm actually planning to use this for my LastSession.plist file for Safari, so when the #@$%^*&! thing crashes, and I don't restore everything, and then Leopard crashes, the fact that it has such lousy session management won't mean I lose the dozens of windows with dozens of tabs I had open.)

  I need to login to an ssh server which doesn't support key based authentication. And I don't want to type the passwords every time. I am using OS X Lion (10.7.2). I have added the passwords to the OS X keychain[1]. Now I can retrieve the password automatically from the keychain using /usr/bin/security, however I can't find a way to send this password to the ssh prompt. I also tried sshpass. However when I try to run it ssh exits with the following error: ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied (publickey,password). • How to stop jucheck from running? Java won't remember "Check for Updates Automatically" setting.

  I've installed Java on Windows Vista, and every day I get a Vista security warning asking me if I want to run "jucheck". Apparently this is the Java automatic updater. Well, I don't want it to run on its own, ever. I cancel it, and quit it. I right-click on the taskbar and unclick "Check for Updates Automatically", and then click "Never Check", and "Apply". And yet, it never remembers this setting. If I come back to the "Java Control Panel" right after clicking "OK", the very same box is checked again, all on its own. Is there some way to kill jucheck once and for all? If I simply delete jucheck.exe, will Java (other than the automatic check) still work, and will manual updates still work, and will it stop even trying to update every morning?

  I normally use a very lightweight Linux setup. No desktop like Gnome or KDE, just Icewm as the windows manager and nothing else that normal users might consider essential. Well, I do need a file manager - I use Thunar. Recently I've been trying Gnome. Whenever I shove a memory stick into a USB port, or connect my digital camera, it can automatically pop up a file manager showing all the goodies on that device. KDE does this too. I like this. Although quick at the command line, I like not having to go sudo to mount the device and all that. If I want to stick with a lightweight setup using Icewm+Thunar, is there something non-huge I can install to make external devices fire up a Thunar window, or otherwise make access to the contents brainlessly easy?

  This question is similar, but kind of the opposite of what I want. I want external USB drives to be mounted automatically at boot, without anyone logged in, to locations like /media/<label>. I don't want to have to enter all the data into fstab, partially because it's tedious and annoying, but mostly because I can't predict what I'll be plugging into it or how the partitions will change in the future. I want the drives to be accessible to things like MPD, and available when I log in with SSH. gnome-mount seems to only mount things when you are locally logged into a Gnome graphical session.

At the moment it works fine with ASCII, UTF-8, and UTF-16 (and possibly others, but I've only tested these three) encoded documents so long as the encoding is specified inside the script (the example code below specifies UTF-16). I would like to automatically add the icons to the "superbar" after installation so the users will be more inclined to use the improved task bar, rather than continuing to use desktop icons. I understand that there is no programmatic access to the task bar to prevent applications from adding themselves to the task bar, filling it with unwanted applications. Is there a way to use MDT, or even GPO to add icons to the task bar, or shall I use a VBS to add the Start menu shortcuts to the task bar?

  Hi when saving to a model, my created and modified fields aren't automatically populated by CakePHP. It was automatically populated when I was using MySQL but now it isn't. I'm not using NOW() back when I was still using MySQL. Why is it? Also when a field's value is not set 'NULL' (with quotes) is inserted causing errors because SQL Server says I can't insert a string to a field of type smallint/date etc. How do I fix this? The problem is that whenever I hook up the laptop to the monitor I have to go to Graphics Properties (Intel Graphics Media Driver for Mobile) and set the display resolution, window position, etc. Note that this screen is different than the built-in one you usually see in WinXP. 1) Is there an app that can save display settings properly so they will come back when I dock again? 2) Barring this, run a script or a macro to automatically set up the display the way I want it. 3) Or, can I write a .Net program that does this for me?   I bought a domain from Dreamhost, but my servers are actually running on Amazon's AWS. I have an Elastic IP, say 1.1.1.1. In the Dreamhost panel, I've added an A record for my domain name, pointing it to 1.1.1.1. My question is, are all subdomains (e.g. www.mydomain.com, a.mydomain.com, etc.) automatically mapped to 1.1.1.1 as well, because the root is? Or do I have to add separate rules for each subdomain?

  I'd like to listen to Spotify while I am video editing. This is just casual listening - nothing to do with the editing work. How can I automatically fade out the volume of Spotify when my video editing program plays audio? I often need to hear the video editing audio without the distraction of Spotify playing over the top, but the video editing playback is too on/off/on/off to switch Spotify audio manually each time. Without background music, I get really sick of the repeated playback of the audio clips with only silence inbetween. I suppose what I needd is an app that monitors sound output from 'App A' and reduces the sound output from all others (Apps B, C, D, etc) when something is played.

  I use Google as my OpenID provider. Once you log into a website with Google's OpenID I am then logged into Google as well. I do not desire this. Can I somehow automatically log off my Google account, or prevent Google from logging in every time I use my Google OpenID? I prefer not to have my personal google account always logged in. Do you have an idea for a mechanism, which will automatically assign default quota values for every new account created (sort as the skel scheme works, but in this area)? Now, I am looking for a generic clean solution, not some ugly cron based scripts, or wrapper scripts for creating users. I would also like to avoid any external, unmaintained stuff (like forgotten pam modules, and such). Anything what could lead to overhead and extra work in future isn't really the solution, nor is checking for new accounts every minute.

I'd be interested to see other people's solutions, but after a few days I'll post my own. In my specific case, I'm running on Windows 7, but I'd be interested in answers for other/older versions of Windows. I realise that one answer is "install a version of Unix find, and then solve as for Unix", but I wanted a more "native" solution. EDIT 2012-07-17: Clarification: by "automatically" I ideally mean something I can run as part of a script, rather than a GUI tool which does all the work at the press of a button, because I'll want to do this unattended.
