• "Breadcrumbs" for series of hostnames?

  Does anyone know of a shell that would show a series of breadcrumbs as I navigate into/out of various servers, like this: Home > Build Machine > Vagrant > Docker-base Hopefully it could auto-detect logging in and out of various boxes and display the hostnames. Perhaps with a simple "no circular links", one could just try and monitor the hostname, but I don't know if there is a shell that can easily act as a 'parent' to the other shells on these various systems so that it can query hostname and/or other item. Any thoughts?

• Overhead of Perfmon -> direct to SQL Database

  HI All, First up, I'm a total newb at Performance Monitoring. I'm looking to set up central performance monitoring of some boxes. 2K3 TS ( Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) 2K8 R2 ( XenApp 6 = Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) File Server ( Standard File I/O ) My ultimate aim is to get as many counters/information, without impacting the clients session experience at all. Including counters specific to their sessions. I was thinking it logging directly to a SQL on another server, instead of a two part process of blg file then relog to sql. Would that work ok? Does anyone know the overhead of going straight to SQL from the client? I've searched around a bit, but havent found so much information it can be overwhelming. thanks

• HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 does not install

  I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services. When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid". • Is there a way to unlock PDF documents?

  I realize most PDF documents are locked for a reason, but I spend several hours a week editing datasheets provided directly from my vendors to be sent to customers. Obviously it's very annoying and somewhat of a show-stopper when I download a datasheet in PDF format, then I am not able to draw boxes, add comments, or draw arrows to the supplied product. One of our vendors told us the way around that was to print a physical copy, then scan it in as a PDF - not the most technological or aesthetically pleasing solution I have found. I at least would like to be able to print the PDF to another PDF so that the new copy is unlocked for editing. Is there any way around this?

• Public IP Routing over Private GRE tunnel

  I have a GRE tunnel configured between two linux boxes. The tunnel works fine. I can ping from each host the other private ip. Head privateip: 10.0.0.1 publicip: 8.8.8.8 Tail privateip: 10.0.0.2 publicip: 7.7.7.7 The public IP on Tail has the network block 9.9.9.0/23 statically routed over the 7.7.7.7 interface. The idea is to make the 9.9.9.0/23 ips work on servers on the 8.8.8.8 network. I configure the tail host to route the /23 block. I mounted a 9.9 IP on the head server. I can ping the 9.9 ip from the tail to the head. I can't ping the 9.9 ip from the public internet. I think I need to add some other routes because of gateway issues, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around it (not a router guy, just beating my way through something that I have never done before and vaguely understand) --danks

• Looking for Inneroffice Access Tool, Workstation to Workstation

  This may be a simple question to answer, and I apologize if it's a duplicate. I looked through the suggestions and nothing jumped out at me as the right answer, so here goes: My office has several workstations, Macs and Windows boxes. We do have a firewall and a VPN solution, so getting in to the network from outside is easy. Likewise, we use GoToMeeting for demos and when we help our customers with their issues. But we have one workstation that has certain testing tools on it, and instead of walking across the office to this machine, I'd like to access it from my desk (and monitor it). I will need to open a command line and run commands. I could start a GoToMeeting and do it this way, but that seems overkill and clunky. Is there a simpler tool that allows pseudo-remote access within the same office/network for this kind of access?

• Linux halts every few seconds

  We're having an issue where one our Linux boxes (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, running on EC2 with a quadruple-large size, 68GB of RAM and 8 virtual cores with 3.25GHz each) freezes up every few seconds. Typing in an ssh session will freeze, and running strace on one of the Postgresql processes that's running usually shows: 02:37:41.567990 semop(7831581, {{3, -1, 0}}, 1 for a few seconds before it proceeds (it always gets stuck at that semop). OProfile shows that most of the time is spent in the kernel (60%) versus 37% in Postgresql. The result of these halts (which began suddenly a day ago) is that load on the box has gone from 0.7 to 10+, and causes our entire stack to slow done. Any ideas on how to track down what's going on? iostat doesn't show the disks being particularly slow or overloaded, and top shows user cpu % spike from 8% to about 40% whenever these back-ups happen.

• Cause of flapping UNKNOWN Nagios status?

  We run some Nagios service checks via OpsView, and one of our hosts is getting a strange response for SSH: "UNKNOWN: Service results are stale" It happens regularly, but seems to go away as the system retries a 2nd and 3rd time. It started after a patch and reboot of the server in question last week. The system itself responds to SSH from boxes I've tested with (which doesn't include the monitoring system I am not given access to). /var/log/secure is full of lines ala: sshd[15628]: Did not receive identification string from xxx.xxx.226.20 Time stamps are reliably every five minutes, which is pretty obviously the monitoring script disconnecting once it gets a login prompt. Anyone know what might be causing this, or how to fix it? It's really frustrating to see this pop on and off the status page.

• How can I tell what user account is being used by a service to access a network share on a Windows 2008 server?

  I've got a third-party app/service running on a Windows 2003 SP2 server that is trying to fetch something from a network share on Windows 2008 box. Both boxes are members of an AD domain. For some reason, the app is complaining about having insufficient permissions to read/write to the store. The app itself doesn't have any special options for acting on the authority of another user account. It just asks for a UNC path. The service is running with a "log on as" setting of Local System account. I'd like to confirm what account it's using when trying to communicate with the network share. Conversely, I'd also like more details on if/why it's being rejected by the Windows 2008 network share. Are there server-side logs on 2008 that could tell me exactly why a connection attempt to a share was rejected?

• NRPE and the $USER1$ variable

  I have NRPE daemons running on all of my remote Linux boxes. I have a couple configurations in place and I'm trying to standardize the paths in my nrpe.cfg. The changes are deployed via Puppet. I would like to use the following syntax: command[mycommand]=$USER1$/check_tcp .. etc. The $USER1$ variable is not available in my NRPE setup. I could write Puppet templates for all the variants but I would much prefer to manage this through a native method. Is there anything available to do so? If not does anyone have a sample Puppet config that will address this?

• SBS 2003 no network connection and acting strangely a bunch of Event ID 13568

  I've got an SBS 2003 Standard server and it was running fine until earlier today when it was rebooted, after the reboot it has no network connection, I can't seem to right click on a lot of stuff and get dialog boxes, I can't launch IE, it's acting extremely strange. We are dead in the water at this point. I checked the event logs and noticed we're getting a ton of Event ID's 13568. I thought it was a Journal Wrap error, and while I was going to try to fix it using this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762 I can't even do that because after I set the D4 value, then went to restart NTFRS from command prompt and I got the following: System Error 1059 has occurred. Circular service dependency was specified. That is where I'm at and haven't been able to figure anything else out. • How can you make a Windows USB HDD Modify All for All Users

  Hi, I use a USB HDD a lot between lots of different Windows Boxes. What I find after a while is that there get to be lots of different Permission on the files in some cases stopping me looking at files or removing them. They want Admin rights or even sometimes you need to put the disk back into the original machine with the original user. This is a right pain. Is there away of making the disk have Modify All for All Users and making this the default for all files on the disk. Thanks

• Server vendor that allows 3rd party disks

  As noted here, Dell is no longer allowing 3rd party disks to be used with their latest servers. As in, they don't work period. Which means that if you buy one of these boxes and want to upgrade the storage later, you have buy disks from Dell at significant premiums. Dell has just given me a very strong reason to take my server business elsewhere. My company buys (instead of leasing) our servers, and typically uses them for 5 years. I need to be able to upgrade/repurpose storage periodically, and do not want to be locked in to whatever Dell might have in stock, at inflated prices to boot. As you will see in the comments of the above link, it seems HP is doing the same thing. I am looking for a server vendor that offers 3-5 year warranty with same day/next day onsite service, and allows me to use 3rd party disks. Suggestions?

• Redhat with a reverse proxy, a specific configuration

  The setup I am trying to put together consists on a server connected to the internet (a redhat box) and 2 Apache Tomcat boxes not connected to the internet. Let's call the server Server and the two Apache Tomcats, Apache1 and Apache2. So, assuming my external IP is 102.1.1.1, Apache1 is 10.1.1.1 and Apache2 is 10.1.1.2, what I'm trying to configure is a reverse proxy so that if the request goes into http://102.1.1.1/mywebserver1/ it will be directed to Apache1 and if the request goes into http://102.1.1.1/mywebserver2/ it will be forwarded to Apache2. Now, I don't need a cache on the proxy since there is application sitting in those tomcats and each request needs to get a fresh answer. I searched for a while and I tried building this with Squid but i can't get it to work the way I need it. Anyone knows how to do this? What software do I need? How do I configure the reverse proxy? We currently have one dedicated server with Rackspace in the UK of the following spec: HPDL385_G2_PrevGen HP Single Dual Core Opteron 2214 (2.2Ghz) 4GB RAM 2x 10,000 SCSI Drives in RAID 1 Our traffic is up to 550,000 UVs per month. The site runs off a PHP and MySQL setup. The database gets an absolute hammering, we have many complex queries joining multilpe tables. We are using APC for PHP caching. I'm getting to the stage where I've done as much DB and query optimisation as I can and wonder what the next step should be...... I've looked at memcache, but I've got the impression that his requires a large amount of RAM and ideally a dedicated box.... So is the next step to have two boxes; one for database, one for Apache? Or is there a step I've overlooked. Our load is usually around the 2 mark, but right now it's up at 20!

• Trouble with cross network permissions for an image through iis7 in an asp.net virtual directory

  I have load balanced web servers My web application has a function that allows the user to upload their company logo to display in the application header obviously, when they upload the logo image file, it needs to be in a central location or otherwise, the file will not be accessible to the other server on the load balancer. in order to be able to upload the image through the application other on one of either servers and then display it on both servers I need a virtual directory in IIS on both servers that point to a third "file server" (this is the "AcctData" directory shown below with a sub folder "images") the problem is that no matter what I do, I run into a permissioning issue If I use pass-through authentication I get a 401 error. If I use a specific user that's set up on both boxes, I get a 500 error. The "Default" application under "CP" (shown in the image below) uses an AppPool that is a Domain Account that has admin permissions on all the servers. I've also tried sticking a Web.config file in the "AcctData" directory allowing anonymous access. Nothing is working though.

• SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 crash when disk is full?

  One of our SQL boxes ran itself out of disk space last night. This particular server has both the database engine and analysis services on it. Database engine was not happy about having no disk space on the volume where all the data files are, but analysis services just plain died. At least, the only thing I have to blame is the full volume. Has anyone experienced a SSAS that they've been able to directly tie to no disk space? I've got nothing else in the SQL or event logs to blame...

• Unable to map to web folder using WebDAV client on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a client running Windows Server 2008 R2 on several servers. One of the servers is also running SharePoint 3.0 and my client has created a web folder to map to. I can map to the web folder from all Server 2008 R2 boxes that have the WebDAV client (part of Desktop Experience feature) installed, except for the server the folder resides on. When I attempt to map to the web folder on the server which the folder resides, I am repeatedly prompted to enter my credentials. I am using the same account that I used to map the web folder on the other servers. I have also tried mapping from the command line and receive 'Access Denied' What may be causing the problem? I would think that if I can map to the drive from one server, I should be able to map the drive from the rest as long as the WebDAV client is installed, especially on the server where the folder is located.   I'm going mad over figuring out what the problem could be with one of our storage boxes. With a simple fio script I'm testing random writes using bs=1M and direct=1. The SSD is a Samsung 840pro attached to an LSI HBA (3Gbit/s ports). This is the result I'm getting under FreeBSD 9.1: WRITE: io=13169MB, aggrb=224743KB/s, minb=224743KB/s, maxb=224743KB/s, mint=60002msec, maxt=60002msec This is regardless of sync being set to 0 or 1. On linux, this is the result with sync=0: WRITE: io=14828MB, aggrb=253060KB/s, minb=253060KB/s, maxb=253060KB/s, mint=60001msec, maxt=60001msec and with sync=1: WRITE: io=6360.0MB, aggrb=108542KB/s, minb=108542KB/s, maxb=108542KB/s, mint=60001msec, maxt=60001msec My understanding is that since I'm operating on the raw block device, O_SYNC should not make any difference - there's no filesystem, any barrier, anything between the writes and the drive itself. Especially with O_DIRECT|O_SYNC set. Any ideas? • iWork '09 Keynote: is there is straightforward way to 'dim' and 'highlight' each item in a bullet li

  I have a bullet list on a slide: first item second item third item What I want to do is show those three bulleted items in a sequence like this: first bullet appears first bullet dims second bullet appears second bullet dims third bullet appears third bullet dims In other words, only one bullet is shown at a time (the one i am current discussing) to reduce audience distraction by what comes next or what i just finished discussing (the prior bullet). This is such a common thing to do, there's got to be a simple, reliable way to do it. The only way I know of is to configure the items individually (using "Build In" and "Action" on each bullet item, which is not only slow but doesn't work well). Another way i've found--which, again is very slow--is to create my bullet list not by selecting a bullet list, but to build the list manually with text boxes (one bullet item per text box) then line them up as a list. This way it's easier to manipulate them independently--again though, takes way too long to do one slide this way.

• Cisco WebVPN RDP Plugin and NLA

  I'm having trouble finding anything in Cisco's docs or with Google searches, so I'm hoping someone out in ServerFault land might know. We've recently enabled NLA domain-wide to protect against some of the recent RDP vulnerabilities. However, we can no longer use the Cisco WebVPN on our ASA to connect to these boxes (Connection Failure). I assume this is because the RDP2 plugin (as of Apr 27 2012) doesn't support NLA? Is there another version of the plugin that does? Thanks!

• What is the best way to clone Win7 machines?

  I'm looking to buy 5 new Win7 boxes and would like to ease deployment by cloning the OS. What I would like to do is install a fresh OS (Dell doesn't seem to sell machines without preinstalled crapware anymore) and then install a few apps on the first one. Once it is just right, I want to clone the OS and install the image on the other four machines and just change the machine name. Is this possible to do without any extra third party software? What I am thinking of doing is backing up the disk image of the first machine to a network share, and then booting the others to the windows install DVD and restoring the same image on each machine. Has anyone had any luck with this technique?
