How to: Check which table is the biggest, in SQL Server

The company I work with had it's DB double its size lately, so I needed to find out which tables were the biggest. I found this on the web, and decided it's worth remembering! Frequent Disconnects ubuntu desktop 12.10 x64 intel 82579V e1000e

I'm having frequent disconnects with my new install of Ubuntu 12.10. I tried updating the kernel driver to the latest intel release to no avail. My expertise is spent. It happens anywhere between 1 min and 10 min. SQLBrowser will not start

SQL Server 2005 x64 on Windows Server 2003 x64, with multiple instances (default + 2 named). Engineers moved server to a different domain. Since then, cannot get SQLBrowser to start. Still able to query the default instance, and can access named instances by port (TCP:hostname,port#). When on server, can use SSMS to connect to the instances, all is well from that perspective. No errors in the SQL Server logs. As SQLBrowser is starting, an entry in EventViewer.Application says that one of the named instances has an invalid configuration, but I haven't been able to figure out what is invalid. Startup continues, and next message says "The SQLBrowser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery." Next, it enables instance and connectivity discovery support; next, another message about that same named instance having an invalid configuration; then an event says that SQLBrowser has started; last, an event shows the SQLBrowser service has shutdown. I got SQLBrowser to get past the issue with the first named instance by temporarily renaming a registry entry, and now the second named instance can be accessed by name rather than port. Still, cannot access the first named instance by name. Advice?

Hi, I am trying to complete the picture of how the PC and the OS interacts together. And I am at point, where I am little out of guess when it comes to device drivers. Please, don´t write things like its too complicated, or you don´t need to know when using high programming laguage and winapi functions. I want to know, it´s for study purposes. So, the very basic structure of how OS and PC (by PC I mean of course HW) is how I see it is that all other than direct CPU commands, which can CPU do on itself (arithmetic operation, its registers access and memory access) must pass thru OS. Mainly becouse from ring level 3 you cannot use in and out intructions which are used for acesing other HW. I know that there is MMIO,but it must be set by port comunication first. It was not like this all the time. Even I am bit young to remember MSDOS, I know you could access HW directly, becouse there ws no limitation, no ring mode. So you could to write string to diplay use wheather DOS function, or directly acess video card memory and write it by yourself. But as OS developed, there is no longer this possibility. But it is fine, since OS now handles all the HW comunication, and frankly it more convinient and much more safe (I would say the only option) in multitasking environment. So nowdays you instead of using int instructions to use BIOS mapped function or DOS function you call dll which internally than handles everything you don´t need to know about. I understand this. I also undrstand that device drivers is the piece of code that runs in ring level 0, so it can do all the HW interactions. But what I don´t understand is connection between OS and device driver. Let´s take a example - I want to make a sound card make a sound. So I call windows API to acess sound card, but what happens than? Does windows call device drivers to do so? But if it does call device driver, does it mean, that all device drivers which can be called by winAPI function, must have routines named in some specific way? I mean, when I have new sound card, must its drivers have functions named same as the old one? So Windows can actually call the same function from its perspective? But if Windows have predefined sets of functions requored by device drivers, that it cannot use new drivers that doesent existed before last version of OS came out. Please, help me understand this mess. I am really getting mad. Thanks.

Hello everybody, I just have a quick question about how to generate id's on-the-fly for HTML elements. So far I've tried a few things, I started with a "for" loop, I already know how many elements I have to generate Id's for, in this case I have an "ul" with 6 "li". My "for" loop is as follows: var items = $("ul li").length; for(var i = 0; i <= items; i++){ $("ul li").attr("id", "number" + i); } "number" would be the new id concatenated with "i", so I get a different Id for each "li". As you can probably tell, this does not work, because I end up with the same Id for each "li": in this case I get <li id="number6">... </li> for all the "li" elments in the "ul". I tried a "while" loop and ".each()" with jQuery but I get the exact same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Read Linux-formatted (ext3) EBS volume mounted on Windows Server 2008 instance

I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 instance set up in Amazon EC2. I've also got some Ubuntu instances on the same EC2 account. I'd like to be able to mount the EBS volume from one of the Ubuntu instances onto the Windows instance as an external drive and then access that drive from the Windows instance. I've looked at tools like ext2fsd and ext2 IFS, but these haven't worked (I couldn't get the former to work, and the latter says that it supports Windows 2008 but gives an error when I try to install it, saying that it only supports up to Windows 2003). I know that there are all kinds of tools to view Linux partitions and that there are filesystems that are compatible with both Linux and Windows, but neither of those options works here (I want to be able to attach and detach the Ubuntu volumes on command, rather than have a permanent partition, and Ubuntu EBS volumes are ext3 by default). Anybody know a good tool I should use?

MSSQL instance shuts down

I'm currently developing a new ASP.net project hosted on a Windows Server 2008 RC2 with an MSSQL 2008 Express Database. I have three SQL instances (for different purposes) running which currently all contain a single database. For apprently no reason, these instances tend to shut down after some days, for no apparent reason. There might be low or none traffic to these instances, because there might be some days in a row, where I can't develop. It now occured several times, that one or two of these three instances just shut down, so that I can't access the database, without manually starting the instance. I can't seem to find a event log entry for the shutdown, which is most likely because I just enabled logging (why is the default setting off?) So the questions are: * Why does a SQL instance shut down? (Is there such thing as a "Shut down instance after 3 days of inactivity"? * How can I achieve that the instances are running 24/7?

Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). Can't connect to sql server 2008 named instance

I have sql server 2005 and 2008 running on a server on my local (and very straightforward) network. Using sql management studio 2008 and visual studio 2008, I can connect over the network to the 2005 instance which is the default instance. I can't connect to the 08 instance (named MC08). I can connect to both when logged in to the server. Remote connections have been enabled for MC08 and dynamic ports is turned off (assigned to port 1045). The sql browser service is running as well. This used to work so I'm not sure what has changed. I can't connect using the IP address either. Nothing unusual in the event log either. Any ideas?

Amazon RDS Pros/Cons of Multiple DBs per instance

I run two completely independent websites. I am moving their MySQL databases to Amazon RDS. I'm not going to do Multi A/Z deployment - let's remove that variable from this question. I'm not sure whether to create a single RDS instance with two databases, or two Amazon RDS instances with a single database. Ignore cost for the sake of this question. I will not hit the 1 TB data limit so let's ignore that. However, it is extremely important that crashing one of the websites doesn't impact the other. Based on this document - http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstance.html I'm assuming that if I write terrible code that crashes one of the databases in a given RDS instance, it could possibly take down the entire RDS instance (and thus inadvertantly affect the other database). Is that correct? Thanks

I specify the install dir and data dir to that of a directory within my application's install directory, such as: msiexec /i @@MYSQL_INSTALLER_FILE@@ /qn INSTALLDIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" DATADIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" USERNAME="@@DB_USER@@" PASSWORD="@@DB_PASS@@" (the @@variable@@'s are replace by my installer routine using InstallJammer) Once installed, I use mysqld.exe to install a windows service with a custom service name and defaults file like so: mysqld.exe --install CustomMySQL --defaults-file="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\my.ini" This works fine as long as there is not already another instance of MySQL installed. If there is it silently fails to install MySQL. Running the msi installer manually (double-click) shows an error that a previous version is already installed and just aborts. Is there a way to automate installing MySQL as an isolated instance, regardless of whether another version/instance is already installed?

Problems with connecting to ASM instance

I have Oracle11 with RAC installed on RedHat 5. I have two servers with two instances one on each one. In each server I succeed connect to appropriate instance of database but not to instance of ASM. I connect with user oracle11 and type: export ORACLE_SID=+ASM1 sqlplus "/ as sysdba" It connects but write: Connected to an idle instance and when I try to access to parameters or views I have errors. For know that +ASM1 is the SID I type: ps aux | grep pmon and get: asm_pmon_+ASM1 I tried also with +ASM but it was also unsuccessfully. What is wrong here?

Problems to connect Java visualVM to a EC2-instance

I'm trying to profile a AWS EC2 instance via visualVM. The instance is in a securitygroup which allows all connections and i'm runing jstatd with a grant codebase "file:${java.home}/../lib/tools.jar" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; policy on it. When i try to connect from my local machine with visulVM nothing happens. When i use jps i get the following response $ jps -l -m -v rmi://ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com Error communicating with remote host: Connection refused to host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out But i can ssh into the instance and use jps locally. Has anyone a pointer in which direction i can debug further?

How to rename database without first stopping SQL instance to flush connections

Is there a way to force a database into single user mode so a script can be run to rename databases? I find I have to Restart the instance of SQL (to force off any connections from a web app, etc.) and then I can run this script: USE master go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", true go sp_dboption StagingMDS, "single user", true go sp_renamedb MDS, LastMonthMDS go sp_renamedb StagingMDS, MDS go sp_dboption LastMonthMDS, "single user", false go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", false go After this script runs, I can restart IIS for my web app and it can connect to the new production database. All the above works well and we've been doing this for years but now we've upgraded to SQL 2008 and the SQL2008 instance also hosts other databases that support other web apps. So, rather than using a Restart of the whole SQL instance to enable subsequent single-user mode on 2 databases, is there a less intrusive way of accomplishing this? Thanks.

Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). Any ideas anyone?

Very High Network out in ec2 instance

I launched an ubuntu-14.04-64bit instance in Amazon EC2 two days back. And I started Tomcat 7.0.54 in that instance and deployed my application war files. It has no other software installed other than tomcat and the default ones. In the past 2 days, its shows 858 GB of Data Transfer(Network Out) from that instance. I have attached a graph of Amazon CloudWatch Metric "Network Out" My application does not do any data download/upload. Its a Java Spring application and the front end is in HTML&Javascript. My application traffic was very low (less than 20 hits) in those 2 days. Is there a way to find out why these data transfers happened and also to find what data has been transferred. If you can see in graph, network out was 20gb per minute. Some more info: Network in was negligible CPU Utilization was very high Everything else was low

SQL Server 2005: Rename DB Server Instance Name?

Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.
