• iPhone application not running with Distribution Certificate

  I have a problem regarding running my application with a Distribution certificate. The application will work fine with a Development certificate on my iPod Touch. Once I change the Code Signing Identity to a Distribution certificate and specify an Entitlements file, the application crashes on launch. Is there anything I can do to correct this? • Best way to sign data in web form with user certificate

  We have a C# web app where users will connect using a digital certificate stored in their browsers. From the examples that we have seen, verifying their identity will be easy once we enable SSL, as we can access the fields in the certificate, using Request.ClientCertificate, to check the user's name. We have also been requested, however, to sign the data sent by the user (a few simple fields and a binary file) so that we can prove, without doubt, which user entered each record in our database. Our first thought was creating a small text signature including the fields (and, if possible, the md5 of the file) and encrypt it with the private key of the certificate, but... As far as I know we can't access the private key of the certificate to sign the data, and I don't know if there is any way to sign the fields in the browser, or we have no other option than using a Java applet. And if it's the latter, how we would do it (Is there any open source applet we can use? Would it be better if we create one ourselves?) Of course, it would be better if there was any way to "sign" the fields received in the server, using the data that we can access from the user's certificate. But if not, any info on the best way to solve the problem would be appreciated.

• Accessing current user personal certificate store within windows service

  I am working on an application which accesses a x.509 certificate from the current user store. This works fine when the application is run as an executable. However, when I try running the app as a windows service, it fails to find the certificate. I tried changing the LogOn property for the windowsservice console to set the right user, but that did not help. Is there any way I can access the particular user's (Administrator) certificate store? I am bound to use the certificate in the user store - else I can easily use the local machine store. Any help will be appreciated.

• Free hosting solution for a very low-traffic website [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 4 answers I run a very low-traffic website (about 40 users, basically all of which are daily active on the site). I don't see it changing anytime soon either, as there is no way to sign up on the site right now. Until now I have just been using a sub-directory on a friend's host (shared), to host the web site. But in only a few weeks from now, his subscription will end, and he has no plans on renewing it. So of course this means I'll have to move on to something else. But I don't think I'll find someone who'd be willing to share a... shared host with me again. And besides, the software used on that server is ancient (PHP 4.4.9 + MySQL 4.1.22). There's one obvious solution that comes to mind, I guess: choose a better host and pay for it myself. The problem here is that I have no real fixed income, as I'm only a student. So even if the pricing is dirt cheap, I just can't be certain I will be able to afford it, every single month, for... at least 2 years maybe? So I've looked at free hosting solutions instead. The least requirement I had was that it was completely free of ads. But no matter where I look, I always find something in a corner or two ("what can you expect from a free host?" - yeah I know, but I guess it was worth a shot). For example, on Byethost (one of the free hosts I tried), if you trigger a PHP error while error reporting is set to E_ALL, you will spawn some hidden ad... Besides Byethost, I've tried 000Webhost, x10Hosting, 2Freehosting/1Freehosting, Wink.ws, and they are only worse. Okay, I'm running low on ideas. But! What if I just hosted the site myself, on my own computer? That could work. I actually do have my computer on practically 24/7. But not really. Sometimes I need to reboot it, and sometimes we even have power outages. And what if the hardware needs an upgrade? It's not such a big deal for me if the site went down, because I know what's going on; but what about the users? If I do decide to host it myself, is there some way to show users an alternate page instead of them just seeing a generic "server not found" page in the browser when the site is not accessible? Or is there something I have been missing out on? Is there a different kind of "web hosting" solution out there that I haven't heard of? Here is what I'm really looking for: Free (as in, no costs) NO ads Bandwidth enough for a low-traffic forum with roughly 40 users (Semi-)Up-to-date PHP and MySQL (at least not older than a year) No standard (non-extension) PHP functions turned off - such as sleep() The mbstring extension is enabled Disk space: at least 5 MB At least one MySQL database Some bonus points would be: Max execution time of PHP scripts can be set Remote access to MySQL database What would be the best solution for me? • Virtual SMTP not sending mails

  Hi I have been googling for the better part of the last two hours without finding any conclusion. My mails are not being sent from the production webserver. If I stop/start the Virtual SMTP I get this in the event log: No usable TLS server certificate for SMTP virtual server instance '1' could be found. TLS will be disabled for this virtual-server. We recently updated the webapplication running and I assume something went amiss during that. Googling the message straight up gave me a list that just as well could have been in greek. I found a security certificate on the server, installing that gave no change. I basicly played russian roulette with the certificate file (.cer), though I was somewhat certain it would not have a negative effect. (Russian roulette with a 6 chamber gun and 2 bullets.) I found a .pfx in our local documentation folder, though I'm far from certain that to have a positive effect. (6 chambers and 5 bullets). I found a site describing how the Virtual SMTP - Properties - Access - should have a button saying Certificates. I have a text saying "Did not find any TLS certificates" and a grayed out tick box saying "Require TLS certificate". I found the TLS being SSL ver3.1+ (3.1-3.3). So question goes - How do I enable the SMTP to once again send emails, like before.

  The software I've created is hosted on what you could call a "bad" website. It's hard to explain, so I'll just provide an example. I've made a free password generator. This, along with most of my other FREE software, is available on this website. This is their description of my software: Platform: 7/7 x64/Windows 2K/XP/2003/Vista Size: 61.6 Mb License: Trial File Type: .7z Last Updated: June 4th, 2011, 15:38 UTC Avarage Download Speed: 6226 Kb/s Last Week Downloads: 476 Toatal Downloads: 24908 Not only is the size completely skewed, it is not trial software, it's free software. The thing is that it's not the description I'm worried about--it's the download links. The website is a scam website. They apparently link to "cracks" and "keygens", but not only is that in itself illegal, they actually link to fake download websites that give you viruses and charge your credit card. Just to list things that are wrong with this website: they claim all software is paid software then offer downloads for keygens and cracks; they fake all details about the program and any program reviews and ratings; they and the downloads site they link to are probably run by the same person, so they make money off of these lies. I'm only a teenager with no means to pursue legal action. This means that, unfortunately, I can't do anything that will actually get results. I'd like my software to only be downloaded off my personal website. I have links to four legitimate locations to download my software and that's it. Essentially, is there anything I can do about this? As I said above, I can't pursue legal action, but is there some way I can discourage traffic to that website by blacklisting it or something? Can I make a claim on MY website to only download my software from the links I provide? Or should I just pay no mind? Because, honestly, it's a bit of a ways back in Google results. • Why do I have untrusted certificates for Google, Yahoo, Mozilla and others?

  In the HTTPS/SSL section of chrome://chrome/settings, I see the following: What does this mean, and is there something wrong? I have a basic understanding of SSL/TLS - I'm not claiming to be completely familiar, but I'm fairly confident I know my way around it - but I don't understand why I have certificates installed on my machine specifically for these sites. From my understanding, I should have the certificates for Certificate Authorities, and any site I visit and use SSL/TLS should have a certificate signed by one of these trusted CAs for me to trust the site. My worry is that if someone has maliciously installed a certificate for these sites on my machine, they could perform a DNS spoofing attack (or a number of other attacks) to hijack my connection to my email account without me knowing, and as they've got the private counterpart to the certificate on my machine, decrypt the communication. NB: I'm also aware that CA certificates aren't just within Chromium and are used system wide as part of libssl - they're stored in /etc/ssl/certs. What I'd like to know is: Is this correct? - The big red boxes make me think no Is this malicious or benign? What can I do to resolve this problem? (If indeed it is a problem) Thanks :)

• Default program for opening .pro Qt project files

  I would like to set Qt Creator (the one which is in the Nokia Qt SDK, not the one in Canonical PPAs) as the default program to open .pro Qt project files. But it appears that my Ubuntu install (12.04 while I am writing the question) recognizes .pro files as plain text files instead of Qt project files. I know that I could fix the problem by setting Qt Creator as the default program for opening plain text files but I want to keep on opening plain text files with the program I currently use for this (gedit). So my question is : how can I do for making my Ubuntu install recognizing .pro files as Qt project files instead of plain text files ? NB : I have already looked at Ubuntu Tweak to associate Qt project files with Qt Creator but I did not find anything relevant (perhaps I missed it too). • How to stop Thunar being default file browser

  On a relatively new 11.04 installation Thunar has become the default file browser simply by using it! Whilst I can open Nautilus easily enough, I'd rather it remained as the default, especially when I choose to view files in dual pane. The only action that I can pinpoint that might have given over my files and folders to Thunar is making Nautilus into Nautilus-Elementary (oh and Unity carked it so I reverted rather unwillingly to Classic, glad I did it is so much more stable and this is my production machine and Unity acts as if it is early alpha as far as I can tell!)

The option I am looking for affects everything in general, so if I change, for example, the default video player to VLC, all movies will be watched with VLC. I am using Unity.

• SSL setup: UCC or wildcard certificates?

  I've scoured the web for a clear and concise answer to my SSL question, but to no avail. So here goes: I have a web-service requiring SSL support for authentication pages. The root-level domain does not have the "www" - i.e., secure://domain.com - but localized pages use "language-code.domain.com", i.e. secure://ja.domain.com So I need at least a wildcard SSL certificate that supports secure://*.domain.com However, we also have a public sandbox environment at sandbox.domain.com, which we also need to support under localized domains - so secure://ja.sandbox.domain.com needs to also work. The previous admin managed to purchase a wildcard SSL certificate for .domain.com, but with a Subject Alternative Name for "domain.com". So, I'm thinking of trying to get a wildcard certificate with SANs defined as "domain.com" and ".*.domain.com". But now I'm getting confused because there seem to be separate SAN certificates, also called UCC certificates. Can someone clarify whether it's possible to get a wildcard certificate with additional SAN fields, and ultimately what the best way is to support: secure://domain.com secure://.domain.com secure://.*.domain.com with the fewest (and cheapest!) number of SSL certificates? • Windows XP seemingly out of resources but plenty of free RAM and swap available

  This one has been bothering me for years and so far I couldn't find an adequate solution. The problem occurs on pretty much every XP install I've done. After opening a variety of programs or the system running existing programs for a while, Windows seemingly runs out of resources, without telling me. There's ALWAYS free RAM. For example, it just happened to me and I had over a gig of free RAM. There are no viruses, spyware, or other nonsense - it is a Windows resource problem, but the question is which resource is it running out of, how does one pinpoint it, and how does one prevent it? Sometimes, this happens after running specific programs - for example, today it happened when I started Photoshop CS4 and Flash CS4 at the same time. I also noticed that restarting The Bat (email client by Ritlabs) seems to get rid of this problem for a while but again, this happens on machines that don't even have The Bat installed. So what does exactly happen? The symptoms are: pressing alt-tab doesn't bring up the list anymore - it just jumps to the next window instantly, very similar to the way Alt-Esc works, however in this case, it's due to not having enough resources to bring up the alt-tab menu random programs would randomly crash, citing random errors, out of memory errors, system resources, inabilities to do system calls, etc. random programs would start missing random parts - for example, Firefox top menus might disappear, pull up partial selections, or not pull up anymore altogether. IE might lose a few of its toolbars. Some programs might fail to redraw or would just plain go gray where the UI used to be. Windows itself never complains about running out of RAM, virtual memory, or anything at all, yet it's running out of something. The only clue I was able to find and apply the fix today was this Desktop Heap Limitation. I haven't confirmed the fix working as not enough time passed. In the meantime, what are everyone's thoughts?

  I would like to add miro to the default application GUI in system settings/default applications.I added ;miro.desktopnext to all rhythmbox.desktop entries eventually discovering if it was not added to audio/x-vorbis+ogg=rhythmbox.desktop as audio/x-vorbis+ogg=rhythmbox.desktop;miro.desktop it would not appear in the system settings/default applications drop down list for audio. I can find default.list in either /etc/gnome/defaults.list or /usr/share/applications/defaults.list modifying either gives me the same results.What is the difference and which is the correct list to modify?

• Setting different default applications for different Desktop Environment

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with default Unity interface. I installed later the KDE desktop, XFCE, LXDE, gnome-shell and Cinnamon. The KDE comes with different default applications than Unity, such as kwrite for text editing, konsole as virtual terminal, kfontview for font viewing and installing, dolphin as File browser etc. Other DE come with some other default applications. The problem arises when you want to open a file such as a text file, with which can both be opened by gedit and kwrite, I want to use kwrite on KDE and gedit on Unity or Gnome. But, there is no way to set like this. I can set default application for text file by changing respective settings in both KDE and Unity, but It become default for both DE. For example, If I set kfontviewer as default font viewing application in KDE, it also opens fonts when I am in Unity or Gnome and vice versa. This is a problem because, loading other DE's program takes long time than the default one for the used DE. My question is: Can I use different default applications for different DE? How?

• Why is Rhythmbox becoming the default (again)?

  So, it seems with 12.04, they're switching back to Rhythmbox, after switching from Rhythmbox a year ago. I don't get why. They say that it's because of a blocking bug in GTK3# (if I understand that correctly), but that's just one bug, and in the same breath they say RB is not well maintained. It seems Ubuntu guys were dissatisfied with Banshee in some way, but apparently the Banshee guys were never notified of any problems. Also, it can't be to save disc space by dropping mono, because at the same day it was announced that the install disc will be enlarged by 50MB. Also, isn't it a bit shortsighted to push Banshee for default inclusion, and then drop it again a year later? How is that a sustainable use of dev resources, or consistent? Apparently there was quite some heavy effort by banshee devs - David Nielsen used the term "bending over backwards for Ubuntu" iirc. In summary: Can anyone shed more light on this? • Java Not Recognized As Default Application

  I just installed java according to this article, and 'java -version' displays java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) 'update-alternatives --config java' returns this: There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java). I tried to install java this way, and on the update-alternatives part of the command returned me: /etc/alternatives/[java,javac,javaws] is dangling, it will be updated with best choice I just confirmed that I can use java, as 'java -jar file.jar' does work. Just figured that I'd mention it, don't know why I didn't before, but when I right click on a .jar file, java 7 run-time isn't even listed there, it seems that the file-manager isn't recognizing it as a program, but it is there, and it does work...

• Can Subject Alternative Name accommodate multiple virtual mail domains?

  I am currently running a postfix server with self signed certificates serving one mail domain, mycompany.com, the mail server is mail.mycompany.com and so is the CN of the certificate. Now, I need to add a new domain to it. The new domain name is mycompany.net to the same server. Since the users already have the root of the old certificate, I'd like to reuse that. However, I'd like to issue a new certificate so users using the SMTP from Outlook/Thunderbird of mail.mycompany.net do not get warnings. If I understand correctly, if I issue a new certificate with CN=mail.mycompany.com and a subjectAltName=DNS:mail.mydomain.net and have postfix serve this, the client will not complain either way about the cn not matching the target host name. Am I correct in this assumption or am I misunderstanding the concept of Subject Alternative Name? Just to avoid conversation, I do not want to have users on mycompany.net addresses use the mycompany.com server because I might (not a technical issue) have to split up into two different locations, and I want to produce an easily migrateable setup.

• Google Calendar as Default Handler of iCal/ICS files

  I would like for Google Calendar to open ICS files when I open them. In a way analogous to how Gmail can be set to be the default handler for mailto: links. More specifically, I would like for Google Calendar to import them to my primary calendar, which can manually be achieved by, when on Google Calendar, clicking the small arrow next to Other Calendars, then choosing Import Calendar, picking the appropriate file and choosing Import. I don't know if this is possible, but I'm hoping somebody will have a great idea.

• Setting up self signed cert and CA [plesk / linux]

  I'm about ready to give up and do a clean wipe of this machine and start over with ISPConfig or some other variant. I installed Plesk on this machine to help with some of the handiwork. It is the free version (single domain); I don't need it for much. It's nice, though, to use to set up db's email, etc. Anyway, I would like to set it up as a CA (which I can add to users' trusted root servers to alleviate those warnings). It seems like Plesk does all it can to obfuscate where things are. Despite trying to find the conf files, and crt/pem/key etc. I am (5 hours later) now left with a machine that won't even get to the ssl page. The browser will sit there, until a 'connection reset' error comes up. In error_log, I get messages saying CN doesn't match server name -- which it does. ssl_error_log: [Thu May 13 16:02:14 2010] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?) [Thu May 13 16:12:19 2010] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?) not very helpful. If anyone has any experience, and/or recommendations (including other software), I'd be much obliged. NB RHEL5; 1 domain, 3 subdomains; everything local only. Thanks.

• How to list user installed applications (not packages)?

  Not packages and not all applications. Just the applications user installed by himself from whatever source (Software Center, manually added PPA, etc.). If the above is not possible - a list of all installed applications or at least a GUI which lists the applications so I can take screenshots of it. I've read a dozen of similar questions and people posting answers usually don't even get close to OP question merit. Please note that my question includes 'user installed'. Answer: It is not currently possible in Ubuntu Linux. (choosing tijybba's answer as the closest one though)
