• How can I create my own private RSS feed of selected podcasts?

  I would like to be able to browse the Internet and "drag" available MP3 files of various podcast episodes into my own private RSS feed. I would like to then subscribe to this RSS feed with iTunes. Do you know of any applications or services that would do this? (I subscribe to IT Conversations and they have a private RSS feed that you can create of their episodes. I like this feature very much. If only I had such a feature that would work more generally). One of the reasons I am looking for this, that my iPod Touch has problems handling podcast playlists that span multiple RSS feeds.

• USB ports not recognizing devices (vista)

  I'm trying to fix a problem on a Vista machine where all the USB ports seem to have power but they don't recognize devices plugged into them. It seemed to start after I plugged my mp3 player (sansa clip) into it and disconnect it. So it sounds similar to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900 but that was for XP. And I did try all the fixes (including the registry entry) but they did not help. It also sounds similar to this SU question 50110 but I don't think it is the mother board. I have see other places that suggest reinstalling the OS...but that seems like a last resort type of thing. I have also seen a suggestion of doing a system restore but not sure if that will help. Any ideas of what I can try?

• OSX: iTunes won't play .ogg files over shared library

  I have an OSX 10.5 box that is sharing its iTunes library and another 10.6 box connecting to that library through iTunes. It works as expected except for ogg files. Those ogg files are visible and selectable in the shared library but will not play through the share on the client machine. If I move the ogg files to the client machine they play locally just fine. They also play locally on the host machine. They just won't play through the iTunes share. Is this a bug or some other known issue? Is there a fix, short of converting all ogg files to mp3?

• How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

  Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

  When I made this batch file, when typing y and n for the first time it works fine, but as soon as I choose n, every single time I try inputting something, it opens up the 7000 songs wpl list then closes it and replaces it with Rick Astley... • Web-based interface is mangled

  Linksys WRT54 - over the last couple days i've been in and out of network configuration screens of my DSL modem and the router (and the commandline for that matter) as I've installed the DynDNS service. (thankx to subsonic and DynDNS.com i'm now able to stream my workstations MP3 catalog over my wife's Droid - making me her tech hero all over again) Somewhere after getting all the net ducks lined up - ports forwarded and firewalls configured - the web-interface for the router ceased rendering the full page - it's only rendering parts, i can F5/refresh and it re-renders and displays some of the cells (table-based webpage) but omits others that _had rendered before the refresh. Happens for both IE and FF. And continues after a reboot. Probably need to re-cycle the router itself but is this known behavior or should i look deeper for a cause? thx

• Free Video Editing Software for windows with storyboard mode

  My dad's currently using windows movie maker to try to make a video out of a series of JPEG images and some MP3s. He's not very happy with it, since Windows movie maker seems to downsample the source images he's used, and not very efficently - despite them being the same resolution as the output WMM is supposed to make, and the replaygain based audio level normalisation on the tracks don't work. So, i'd want a free programme that has storyboard mode (else i'd use visualdub) that'll not try to change the resolution of images used to make a video (assuming all images are the same resolution), and preferably accept the normalised mp3 files we're using. WMM isn't a option, since Its what i'm trying to find a replacement for.

My parents want me to fix this computer for my 5-year-old sister to use. I decided to use Linux Mint as the OS because everything (flash, mp3, etc.) is already configured. How do I create a user account in Linux Mint with limited access for my sister, so that it won't mess up the entire system?   I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• What program is making this sound and how can I make it stop

  Some program is intermittently making this weird "chook ... chick" sound, no more than every 5 minutes, but sometimes hours or days between making it. There seems to be no pattern as to when it happens, but the sound is definitely coming from the speakers, and is always the same, so I'm pretty confident some piece of software I'm running is playing the sound. Today, I managed to record it, and I've posted it here: http://tristanhavelick.com/chook-chick.mp3 Short of closing my programs one by one, and seeing if the sound continues, are there any tricks for tracking down a problem like this? Is there any software that can trace what sounds come from what programs (something like tcpview with waveforms)? I am running windows xp.

• foobar2000 truncate media library

  Hi, I want to start using the media library feature of foobar2000 v1.0 and added one music folder, which contains a couple of subfolders with music of different albums. I restricted the filetypes to *.mp3;*.flac. Now my problem is that I don't want all albums/folders in my media library. But I can't seem to find an option to remove a particular album from the library. Do you have an idea what I can do? I thought about adding just the appropriate folders, but that would take a ages because one can only add one folder at a time :( Thanks -Martin

• Empty track in Windows Media Player 12 that can't be deleted

  Right after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, I synced with my DropBox account that contains all of my music and added the directory to Windows Media Player 12. I now have a strange track that really isn't a track at all. It's grouped under "Unknown Artist" and has absolutely no text. The only reason I know it's there is because it highlights on mouse-over. Double-clicking on it does nothing. When the song before it ends, Windows Media Player stops playing altogether until I choose a different song (it should continue to play the next song on its own). When I try to delete this mysterious track, nothing happens. I've cleared my library and re-imported everything, but this empty track keeps appearing. I have also checked my Music directory and there is no empty MP3. What is going on here?

• Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • Is it possible to store playlists in music file metadata?

  I have been trying to think of a way to store my playlists completely independently from any one music player, and I think that one way to do this would be to use each song's tags to store the list of playlists in which that song belongs. For example, if song1.mp3 and song2.flac both belong in the "Cool Songs" playlist, then I would add to each of them a tag called "Playlist" with a value of "Cool Songs". To access the "Cool Songs" playlist in my music player, I simply search for songs where the "Playlist" tag has a value of "Cool Songs". Obviously, I would need a music player that allows me to manipulate arbitrary tags on any music format, including multiple instances of the same tag (so that songs can be in multiple playlists). Instead of creating playlists, I create "saved searches" or whatever the music player calls them, that search for the appropriate playlist tag. Is this scheme possible, and how many music player programs would support such a scheme?

• Playing sound on server using php

  I want to play a sound file on my server using PHP. The PHP script is called by Apache and runs under the user 'nobody', which has by default no access to the speakers. So I created a new user soundoutput which is allowed do play sound and has read permissions for the sound files he should play. If I'm logged in as root, I can play a sound file using echo password | sudo -Su soundoutput mpg321 '/path/to/sound.mp3'. The problem is, that it doesn't work when I'm executing this command using PHP's system_exec. I guess that user nobody isn't allowed to run sudo, but what can I do that he is allowed to do that? Any help appreciated.

• Setting up podcasting for a non-tech user

  I have a user who wants to start making podcasts, but they only have basic skills when it comes to technology. So, I was trying to get a process together that would be easy for them to follow. To upload files (the mp3's and rss feed files), I have an explorer shortcut for their FTP space. To record the podcast, I was going to either use audacity or PodProducer. For the RSS feed, I was looking for a podcast RSS generator of some sort. In my search for this, I've come across a lot of dead links and a lot of paid tools, so I haven't come up with anything too useful. Is there a free, reliable webservice or windows-based tool available that folks like to use?

• Wine not finding some files

  I'm having strange issues with Wine : If I look a C:\windows\system32\drivers\ in wine explorer, the directory looks empty, while the directory ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers is not. Plus, having the H: drive mapped to my home directory, I can look at H:\.wine\drive_c\windows\system32\drivers and it is not empty, the files are here ! Thus it seems Wine has the rights to access these files. So why don't they appear on the C: drive ? Some of my programs need them. • Choosing Truecrypt volume names and keyfile names

  Any recommendations on what to name Truecrypt volumes (container files) and where to locate them? Certainly a name like "this is a truecrypt volume.tc" isn't a good idea. Any recommended storage locations? Same question for keyfiles that are generated with Truecrypt. Finally, lets say you choose an existing file, ymca.mp3, as your keyfile. Given that that file is innocuous and normal looking, isn't it easy to forget that's your key file so when you get sick of the Village People and delete the song you're hosed?

• Files turned into folders on external hard drive

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much! An example of what the folders are named: "Highschool Graduation.avi", "Birthday party.avi", "Somesong.mp3" The HDD is connected to a Linksys E4200 router (Firmware Version: 2.0.37). • Getting iTunes to play third party AAC files

  I have a library filled with some old MP3 files and I'm in the process of changing them all to AAC for the better sound quality. Obviously I can't just create AAC versions of the files I already have because they would sound worse (lossy compression to converted to more lossy compression), so I'm going to their source and downloading them in a lossless form and using a third party to make them into AAC. Apparently iTunes will not handle AAC files that aren't made with iTunes. Is there a way around this? I've looked at third party programs and would be willing to use them, but since they all require the iTunes/iPod/iEverything driver, I don't know if they would still prevent my files or not. Also before you jump on my back about pirating, these files are from old CDs that I lost years ago. I paid for them. Thanks.

• Has anyone had luck getting an external hard drive working with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

• Unable to see some Russian id3 tags in ncmpc

  I'm running urxvt with the current env: $ env | grep LC LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 The problem is either with ncurses or ncmpc and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what the problem might be. This could also be an issue with the ID3 tags and any advice on working with broken or misconfigured encoding settings in meta tags in mp3 files is also welcome. I have been ignoring this matter for years and it has finally gotten to me. The bizarre thing is that some filenames or tags work, while others do not. What I have tried the following: setting LC_ALL to these values (whatever is before the space) ru_RU.KOI8-R KOI8-R ru_RU.UTF-8 UTF-8 ru_RU ISO-8859-5 rebuilding the MPD database with id3v1_encoding "ISO-8859-1" or id3v1_encoding "UTF-8" I can demonstrate the problem with two screen shots, as it's the easiest way to do so: Expected output (mpc works well): Broken encoding (ncmpc):

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances. • Block by file type, but just file extension using MDaemon

  I've had users sending copyrighted files (songs, videos) to each other over email. I blocked the file extensions .mp3 etc. What some users have done is to rename files to .doc etc. I cant block .doc etc filetypes because they are needed for day-to-day work. I'm using MDaemon 12 mailserver, Does anyone know how to make it block these attachments? I've been working on some content scanning for filetype code, but was wondering if there is a already made solution?
