• SSL Login in iFrame

  My UI prototype requires me to show the sites login info all the time. Either I should show the usual username and password textbox or "you are logged in as". The last bit don't have to be secure, as it's only info to the user, nothing I will use server side. But the first part should send secure to the server. It seems that I would have to use https for all pages on the site then. I would like to only use ssl for the things that are required to be secure. One way is putting the login information into a https://../login.aspx and show it on my mainpage as an IFrame. One disadvantage I can see is that the user won't know that https is being used, unless they read the IFrame src in the source code. What do you think?

This leads to deeply nested anonymous functions. • Metalanguage like BNF or XML-Schema to validate a tree-instance against a tree-model

  Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. • naive bayesian spam filter question

  Hi guys, I am planning to implement spam filter using Naive Bayesian classification model. Online I see a lot of info on Naive Bayesian classification, but the problem is its a lot of mathematical stuff, than clearly stating how its done. And the problem is I am more of a programmer than a mathematician (yes I had learnt Probability and Bayesian theorem back in school, but out of touch for a long long time, and I don't have luxury of learning it now (Have nearly 3 weeks to come-up with a working prototype)). So if someone can explain or point me to location where its explained for programmers than a mathematician, it would be a great help. Could someone explain what's wrong and help me make this work?

  For my bachelor thesis I want to implement a shopping (price comparison) portal prototype based on XML Data. The main requirement is to get a very clear and customizable HTML template, which should be hosted by the customer on his own webserver. I'm not very sure if XSLT meets this requirements, as it generates a lot of xsl-related code. It is not easy to understand for people with little HTML skills. I have some experience with the PHP templating engine Smarty. The syntax is much better, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to parse the XML data with PHP, as it is very complex. Which language should I choose for a web application with high complexity? XSLT or PHP?

• django app using amazon aws s3 storage in stead of DB?

  new to python here so bear with me ... i'm looking at django for a rapid prototype to a photo sharing app with an amazon aws s3 storage back end. however, as far as i can tell, django is tailored toward the typical database MVC type of pattern. is there a way to for example provide a custom django model implementation that talks to s3 in stead of a DB? a custom DB engine? would either of these be practical, or am i looking in the wrong direction? thanks.

• Stack Overflow-like tag selector for Rails

  I want to use tags for a model in my Rails application, and I'd like to have the same kind of tag selection mechanism that Stack Overflow has when asking a question. I.e. I type in 'rails' and it drops down a list of tags that include 'rails', and I can go on to add more tags from there. Is there a plugin that can do this? I'm comfortable putting together the tag model and migrations myself, that isn't an issue. I just need something to handle the AJAX and javascript. I'm using prototype and Rails 2.3.

• Best way to implement a Parsing/Editable Richtextbox in WPF

  I'm trying to implement (as a prototype initially), a richtextbox control which can be parsed in real time to apply certain formatting options to it. This is being done in WPF so I thought the best way to go about it would be to extend the existing rich text box control. I've run into the issue where it isn't documented well and the examples are quite slow (the ones I found have parse the whole document on every keystroke). The way I've currently decided to go about it is to create a custom Inline element which can hold the formatting tags, and the contents. Hence I only have to parse the current paragraph and the runs in that paragraph for formatting tags. Is there a better way to achieve this? Note this isn't for code/syntax based documents (so AvalonEdit isn't appropriate). Cheers

• How to find the right balance between "quick & dirty" and "nice & general" code?

  This is not a direct programming question, but a little help from the programming community would be appreciated. I am suffering from an overgeneralization disease. I can't stop spending valuable time with making my code most general and abstract. I could also call it the toolkit/library disease. I tend to turn every programming task into a general problem and try to "write a toolkit", that would work for many similar problems. I know it's a good thing in general, if there is enough time, but sometimes I should be writing a quick prototype and just can't seem to write the quick and dirty code that just works for the special case. I often get excited about an idea that makes the code more general and user-configurable and understimate the time it takes to actually implement it that way. Does anyone else have this experience? How can I force myself to find the right balance between "quick hack" and "nice solution"?

  Hello, I'm looking for Javascript code for letting the user draw a line (on an image). Just as the line tool in Photoshop (for example): The user clicks on the image, drags the mouse (while the line between the start point and the mouse point is dynamically drawn on mouse drag). I would also need a callable function to send the page the start and end coordinates. The callback function on successful call would be something like this.   In another question, a user pointed out that the new keyword was dangerous to use and proposed a solution to object creation that did not use new... I didn't believe that was true, mostly because I've used Prototype, Scriptaculous and other excellent JavaScript libraries, and everyone of them used the new keyword... In spite of that, yesterday I was watching Douglas Crockford's talk at YUI theater and he said the exactly same thing, that he didn't use the new keyword anymore in his code. I have tried the unobtrusive date picker plugin but it breaks with the latest release of Rails. calendar date select plugin uses prototype which I have removed from my app and don't want to add back. active calendar plugin - broken with latest Rails and hacked to fix but doesn't fill out the text fields when a model is loaded. • Quickest and easiest way to implement speech to text conversion for a small speech subset.

  Hi, I want to implement a system that receives speech through a microphone on my Mac OS x. I know arbitrary speech recognition is close to impossible without training the system so I'm willing to restrict it to 10 simple sentences. It must recognize with a high degree of accuracy which of these 10 sentences are being spoken, generate the text and add an entry to a remote MySQL database. With these being the architecture of the system I want to implement, could anyone give me an overview of what would be the best way to go about implementing this system? I'm looking for ideas like open source libraries to minimize the coding as this is just a prototype application for a demonstration. Basically I'm looking for a quick and easy solution. Thanks!

• Mixin or Trait implementation in AS3?

  I'm looking for ideas on how to implement a Mixin/Trait style system in AS3. I want to be able to compose a number of classes together into a single object. Of course this is not a language level feature of AS3, but I'm hoping that there is maybe some way to do this using prototype based techniques or maybe some bytecode hacking that I believe AsMock uses to implement it's functionality. An existing Java example is Qi4J where the user define interfaces that the Qi4j framework implements based on metadata tags and coding by convention. Has anyone any ideas on how to get the Mixin/Trait concept working within AS3?
