  I was tasked to conduct my first interview and would like to pose my question to this world for both their feedback on my question and also on their solutions. Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path. Define the desgin consideration and develop a prototype. Note: We are looking more for what design one would use and why rather than code that compiles. If it does then kudos to you and we will give it more weight. @Tim C, I did show the interviewee the file: User1234.txt UserID=1234 ParentPath=\\somewhere\nowehere\everywhere\1234 FileCount=20 File0=something0.ext .. • Excess elements in scalar initializer

  I'm pretty noobish when it comes to C++ STL stuff. After a compiler upgrade, I'm getting: error: Semantic Issue: Excess elements in scalar initializer on the call: Certificate *tempcert; cValType( tempPerson->name, tempcert ); with a typedef of: typedef std::map< string, certificate* >::value_type cValType; I'm not certain what this error is telling me or how to fix it. (Ok, I realize it's telling me excess elements, but it looks like it matches the map prototype to me, so I'm confused.) Suggestions?

• [jquery] return the inserted element

  Hello, i'm pretty new to jquery. I'm trying to insert an element to the DOM, and get that element back in my script. Ex: var elem = $("body").append(""); $(elem).show(); but it seems that .append returns the whole jQuery object.. am i supposed to use an ID for the inserted element and always reference it by it?? i really hope that there is a smarter move here. I'm used to do it like that from Prototype..

• Purpose of boost::checked_delete

  I don't understand the purpose of boost::checked_delete. The documentation says: The C++ Standard allows, in 5.3.5/5, pointers to incomplete class types to be deleted with a delete-expression. When the class has a non-trivial destructor, or a class-specific operator delete, the behavior is undefined. Some compilers issue a warning when an incomplete type is deleted, but unfortunately, not all do, and programmers sometimes ignore or disable warnings. The supplied function and class templates can be used to prevent these problems, as they require a complete type, and cause a compilation error otherwise. So the C++ standard allows you to delete incomplete types, which causes undefined behavior if the type has a non-trivial destructor. What? How can an incomplete type have any destructor at all? Isn't an incomplete type just a prototype?

• What's the easiest way for a Java Swing client to consumer a webservice?

  I have a Java Swing application client that I want to use to consume certain webservices, but I want to make it as painless as possible to code (because really all I want is the info). I do understand that whatever solution is used will need to stub the POJO's too. If you'd like to give a demo, that would be great, or if you can point to a tutorial that would also be really appreciated. I did look at Axis, including the more recent Axis2, but it's a bit more complex than I was hoping (aka. I have to learn something). At least just for some quick prototype testing and not real development, more for the sake of just saying I can, is there something or a tutorial out there?

• Javascript 'class' and singleton problems

Firebug consolle says: "myRequestManager.require is not a function", but i don't understand where the problem is. Is there a better solution for implement this situation?

• Spring & Hibernate SessionFactory - recovery from a down server

  So pre spring, we used version of HibernateUtil that cached the SessionFactory instance if a successful raw JDBC connection was made, and threw SQLException otherwise. This allowed us to recover from initial setup of the SessionFactory being "bad" due to authentication or server connection issues. We moved to Spring and wired things in a more or less classic way with the LocalSessionFactoryBean, the C3P0 datasource, and various dao classes which have the SessionFactory injected. Now, if the SQL server appears to not be up when the web app runs, the web app never recovers. All access to the dao methods blow up because a null sessionfactory gets injected. (once the sessionfactory is made properly, the connection pool mostly handles the up/down status of the sql server fine, so recovery is possible) Now, the dao methods are wired by default to be singletons, and we could change them to prototype. I don't think that will fix the matter though - I believe the LocalSessionFactoryBean is now "stuck" and caches the null reference (I haven't tested this yet, though, I'll shamefully admit). This has to be an issue that concerns people.

  Ok - have been tasked with possibly an impossible (or at least a potentially nightmarish) scenario. Need to come as close as possible to reproducing PowerPoint-like effects via HTML/JavaScript (the spec is large and ugly, so I will spare you the details). Ultimately, I am looking for a solid launching point. I have used both Prototype/Scriptaculous as well as jQuery in many projects, and based on what I am seeing, it appears jQuery has the more plug-in available, so am leaning towards using jQuery. Can anyone point me to some plug-ins, articles, or anything else that would help me in accelerating the research on this so I can define to my client what can and cannot be done. Any other suggestions from you jQuery gurus are welcome of course. Thanks -

• Rapid Prototyping for Embedded Systems

  For doing prototyping on small embedded projects that require physical motion, what hardware prototyping tools are available? For my projects, I tend to spend more time finding parts (i.e. wood, aluminum, etc.) and making the proper cuts, measurements, and connections than writing the software and configuring the electrical hardware. Are there any affordable products that will enable me to create physical hardware that is strong enough to support motion? If not, what techniques or tools are available to help develop the physical hardware more quickly? Currently, I typically build my projects from wood and plastic scraps that I have lying around. What types of materials enable you to prototype more quickly? CLARIFICATION: By motion, I mean something that has to bear stress like a robot arm powered by a servo motor and could handle moving or carrying 1-2 lbs.

  Hi, I'm working on a small academic research about extremely long and complicated functions in the Linux kernel. I'm trying to figure out if there is a good reason to write 600 or 800 lines-long functions. For that purpose, I would like to find a tool that can extract a function from a .c file, so I can run some automated tests on the function. For example, If I have the function cifs_parse_mount_options() within the file connect.c, I'm seeking a solution that would roughly work like: extract /fs/cifs/connect.c cifs_parse_mount_options and return the 523 lines of code(!) of the function, from the opening braces to the closing braces. Of course, any way of manipulating existing software packages like gcc to do that, would be most helpful too.   I'm using for my projects a rather complete UI auto-generation tool from database entities for windows forms and asp.net I wrote. Now I've built a working prototype UI auto-generation tool from domain objects. Right now it is in early stage of development and by reflection it generates user interface for creating and updating domain objects. I searched a bit and I didn't find other opensource projects that have the same goal. Why? This type of tool is not useful? Is this idea fundamentally flawed? Thanks.

• Simple RIA backend

  I'm creating a prototype for a java web application. Frontend is a Swing-based java applet. Backend should be a type of web-service, that is called by applet. Backend should run inside a servlet container and should have its own security (username/password) database. I know, that Tomcat has its own user database (realm), but the app should have own. Web-services, in turn, carrying out app logic and database access (via Hibernate). I'm a newbie for a web development and I'm getting lost in a huge amount of the java web frameworks. Even just reading 'introduction' and 'getting started' documents takes a lot of time. So I need an advice which framework(s) are suitable for the task and not very complex for a quick start. • sql query where parameters null not null

  I am trying to do a sql query and to build the where condition dynamically depending if the parameters are null or no. I have something like this: SELECT tblOrder.ProdOrder, tblOrder.Customer FROM tblOrder CASE WHEN @OrderId IS NOT NULL THEN WHERE tblOrder.OrderId = @OrderId ELSE END CASE WHEN @OrderCustomer IS NOT NULL THEN AND tblOrder.OrderCustomer = @OrderCustomer ELSE END END This doesn't work, but this is just a small prototype how to assemble the query, so if the orderid is not null include in the where clause, or if the ordercustomer is not null include in the where clause. But I see problem here, for example if the ordercustomer is not null but the orderid is null, there will be error because the where keyword is not included. Any advice how I can tackle this problem. • Handling JSON and HTML templates in jQuery

  I have an ajax-enabled site that presents a lot of dynamic content by interpolating JSON values with HTML. This all works fine. BUT it means I have significant amounts of HTML all through my JavaScript. For example: var template = "<div>Foo: {bar}</div><div>Blah: {vtha}</div>"; template.interpolate({bar:"bar",blah:"vtha"}); I have cut this down a fair bit - some of my dynamic elements have quite a lot of HTML and a lot going on.   Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? • Working with three dimensional data in an HTML (ASP.NET) table.

  I am working on the prototype for a scheduling application on an intranet system. The application is for scheduling and tracking promotional workers at various locations on various dates (hence location, date, workers dimensions). Currently, only for prototyping, I am generating a data table of location/date, and from this I iteratively build an HTML table (asp:Table control). On visiting each cell, I query for people working that location-date and populate the cell accordingly. This is very inefficiant, and will at worst be improved by querying cached data for the whole location/date grid. I'm looking around for established patterns and techniques for dealing with scenarios like this in HTML in general, maybe a visualisation library for jQuery or something, and for ASP.NET in particular, maybe a library for implementation on a GridView etc. Am I going in the right direction with this, and if so, what recomendations are there regarding the previous paragraph?

Result ImageController.prototype.getImage = function(req, res) { var realty_id, _this = this; realty_id = req.query.id; if ((realty_id != null) But actually the last line should be: if ((typeof realty_id !== "undefined" && realty_id !== null)) When I comment out "realty_id = req.query.id" it works well. Has anyone a explanation for that?

• How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies
