• Geocoding service for a startup?

  I'm working on an idea for a service that uses geocoded data (lat/lng) form a US address. Google maps API v3 has been awesome, until I read the terms of service and acceptable uses a little closer. The problem is that the terms seem to prohibit use of the maps API for any commercial use where the site is not freely accessibly to the public, such as a subscription based service. The alternative offered is Google Maps API Premier, but at $10,000 per year minimum, it's just not possible at this time. Same goes for services offered by Yahoo! and MS - initial fees are small for enterprises, but for a very early stage startup (not even a finished prototype yet!) it's just not doable. Geocoding process needs to be real-time and volume would be very small - user would enter address at setup time and only update it if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Using different versions of jQuery on the same page

  Users of my service includes a JS in their pages that I provide. I am hosting the script they are including. My script does some manipulation on their content. I am sick of writing my own DOM manipulators/selectors and wasting hours for jobs that can be done with 1 line of code if I can use jQuery. Some of the users of my service already uses jQuery (or Prototype etc.) on their pages, so if I include jQuery there will be a conflict. Because there will be version differences, I don't want to use their jQuery selectors, methods either in case jQuery exists. Keeping in mind that I have no control over their pages, how can I include jQuery and avoid conflict?

• Navigating from VB.NET code to C# code problem

  Hi, There seemes to be a consistent problem with the following situation: Say you have a VS2008 solution, consisting of a (say console) application written in vb.net, and a class library written in c#. The application references the class library project. This, of course, complies and works well. However, when you right-click (in the vb.net application code) a function prototype/object type defined in the class library, and select "Go to definition", the object browser opens providing you with the the list of methods available for the class the class library consists of. BAD. However, if you try to do the same when both the application and cl are in c#, this works just fine and you navigate driectly to the relevant function/class.GOOD. Known issue? Solvable?

• How can I try a new language or framework without installing it?

  With so many languages and frameworks that exist, and with new ones appearing all the time, I don't have the time to download, install, and configure each one to evaluate it. In the past I've run across webapps that allow one to write or paste code into a window, and see the results in realtime in the browser, usually in a tutorial setting. What are your favorite sandbox sites for a given technology? Edit: @fretj provided the link to the excellent Google Code Playground (+1 upvote), but I thought that it was just for experimenting with Google's own apps (Search, Maps, Earth, Language, etc). But it turns out that it contains a few hidden gems: In addition to their apps, you can try out the many Javascript libraries that they host including jQuery, jQuery UI, MooTools, Dojo, and Prototype Scriptaculous. They're all hidden under the Libraries category in the "Pick an API" box. I overlooked the category because I thought it was for an app called Google Libraries. There's also a Javascript category for Javascript itself.

I am currently doing a project that applies personalisation and customisation and wanted to implement something similar. my prototype is based on an institution, so i want to display a list of probably the last 5 viewed programmes or courses on the home page. I am using php and so far i have thought of using $_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"], but basically returns the last url..Which is not what i want. Does any one have any suggestions that could probably help with this. thanks.

• "digg" button and encoded url :S

  Hi! I wrote a php site (it's still a prototype) and i placed a "Digg" button. Placing the button was easy but.... Official manual says "url has to be encoded". I did that with urlencode(). After urlencode, my url looks like this: http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mysite.com%2Fen%2Fredirect.php%3Fl%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.othersite.rs%2FNews%2FWorld%2F227040%2FRusia-Airplane-crashed%26N%3DRusia%3A+Airplane+crashed So far, so good but when i want to submit that url to digg, it is recognized as invalid url: http://www.mysite.com/en/redirect.php?l=http://www.othersite.rs/News/World/227040/Rusia-Airplane-crashed&N=Rusia:+Airplane crashed If i place a "+" between "Airplane" and "crashed" (mere end of a link), then digg recognize it without any problems! Please help, this bizare problem is killing my braincells! P.S. for purpose of this answer urls are changed (nonexisting) because, in original, non-english sites are involved P.S.S. • C# StringBuilder question

  in a C# file i have a class Archiver { [DllImport("Archiver.dll")] public static extern void archive(string data, StringBuilder response); } string data is an input, and StringBuilder response is where the function writes something the archive function prototype (written in C) looks like this: void archive(char * dataChr, char * outChr); and it receives a string in dataChr, and then does a strcpy(outChr,"some big text"); from C# i call it something like this: string message = "some text here"; StringBuilder response = new StringBuilder(10000); Archiver.archive(message,response); this works, but the problem, as you might see is that i give a value to the StringBuilder size, but the archive function might give back a (way) larger text than the size i've given to my StringBuilder. any way to fix this?

• Strange CSS Positioning issue with a fader on a responsive site

  I'm developing a prototype responsive wordpress theme version of my homepage. I'm running into issues with the fader on the homepage. http://dev.epicwebdesign.ca/epicblog/ When the image switches, it uses position:absolute to overlay the pictures, then goes back to position:relative. I need to make the absolute be relative to the bottom left corner of the menu instead of the top left corner of #wrap so it doesn't overlap. I tried putting it in a container div like this: http://wiki.orbeon.com/forms/doc/contributor-guide/browser#TOC-Absolutely-positioned-box-inside-a-box-with-overflow:-auto-or-hidden but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? There are major CSS compatibility issues in IE, try it in chrome. It should look similar to http://epicwebdesign.ca. When the browser window is shrunk horizontially, the whole theme compensates.

• How necessary is using PHP filters?

  I'm a relatively newbie to PHP and just making my way through the W3Schools tut. The tut makes a big point of saying you must always filter external data (i.e. cookies, form data etc). I'm writing a fairly simple system that talks with a third party Joomla extension. It's at a prototype stage where I'm just wanting to demonstrate the functionality in a minimum viable product. Basically, I'd like to know... what's the worst that could happen in I don't filter content. Are we talking 'I might get a bunch of spam', or 'a good hacker could get root server access'? Have hunted around online, but would love any of your experience / insight on the matter!

• spidermonkey using JS_CallFunction for static function

  JS_CallFunctionName can call a method of an object by name: JSObject* obj; JS_CallFunctionName(cx, obj, "doSomething", argc, vp, retVal); The code above works fine if the "doSomething" is a function declared in the prototype of the "obj". What I want to know is if there is a way to call a function that is a "class function". I tried: if(JS_HasProperty(getGlobalContext(), getGlobalObject(), "ClassToGet", &b)) { print("OK"); } and the output is "OK". But when tried: JS_GetProperty(getGlobalContext(), getGlobalObject(), "ClassToGet", &jsOwner); if (jsOwner != JSVAL_VOID) { } the jsOwner is a JSVAL_VOID. Maybe there is a function in SpiderMonkey can execute function in a JSClass ? Any suggestion will be appreciated, thanks :)

• c++ : list(vector) definition with array

  I have Class Email, there is parameter "bcc" in her construktor. Its actually list of emails for copies. There is no fixed number of these emails and later i have to have possibility to extend this list. //construktor prototype Email::Email(vector<string> bcc) So i want to use type vector or list for that and function push_back(). How can i make a new instance with bcc emails? I need actually declaration with definition for my list. I've found this definition with iterator for integer type: int myints[] = {16,2,77,29}; Email myEmail(vector<int> (myints, myints + sizeof(myints) / sizeof(int) )); , but its not very user friend and i need it with strings. Is there something like this? Email myEmail(vector<string> ("first","second","third"));

• How to create a "dependency graph" for IT assets

  One of my customers is trying to create an interactive "matrix" of interdependencies for the various applications used in their company (it's a travel&leisure company with around 2500 employees). The idea (still at the prototype stage) is to create a sort of Map, based on Visio or similar tool, which traces the communication and interdependencies between all the IT assets in the company, so that when someone asks for a change they can get an overview of the impacts. This was mentioned in a casual setting and it will not be my responsability to directly work on this, but I did contribute the little I know already in terms of vaguely related methodologies (Zachman Framework). I'd like to hear from the people in here if they know of methodologies, or tools, that may help this kind of effort, and if they have any specific experience to contribute. I'll digest the answers and send the result back to my customer, hoping this may be of some help with their task (which I consider a bit visionary and prone to all the pitfalls of any documentation project, but still well worth pursuing).

• building objects from xml file at runtime and intializing, in one pass?

  I have to parse the XML file and build objects representation based on that, now once I get all these data I create entries in various database for these data objects. I have to do second pass over that for value as in the first pass all I could do is build the assets in various databases. and in second pass I get the values for all the data and put it in the database. I have a feeling that this can be done in a single pass but I just want to see what are your opinions. As I am just a student who started with professional work, experienced ppl please help. Can someone who have ideas or done similar work, please provide some light on the topic so that I can think over the possibility of the work and get the prototype going based on your suggestion. • Practical Python-based visual programming environment?

  I am looking for a practical visual programming environment based on Python. My primary application is algorithm development for processing remote-sensing imagery. I was initially inspired by LabVIEW from National Instruments, but that is more geared towards laboratory measurements and simulations. I write a lot of prototype code in Python and do a lot of interactive analysis with IPython. Does there exist a visual framework where a "program" is represented by connected nodes which each read data, do some work, and output data to the next node? I would like to use Python to write the code residing in each node. So far the best I've seen is Orange http://www.ailab.si/orange/, but it does not have the ability to start/stop individual nodes.

• Efficient multiple services exposed over c# .NET remoting using more channels or end points?

  I am using remoting over TCP for a prototype distributed server application where I want to have varying multiple services exposed from each remoting server process. In some cases I want the services running from the same process but I don't want whatever is using the service to care about that. I am wondering is it more efficient to have multiple services in the same process going over the same remoting channel distinguished by endpoint URI/URL or should I be creating new channels on different ports for each service in the same process? Using up ports isn't so much of a problem as the number of services will be low and the network and machine configuration is completely controlled. Also its not clear to me if remoting sends the URI string for every single message or just at connection time, and whether if the remoting framework is intelligent enough to reduce work if calls are made on the same machine and even the same process?   Relating to this question i was wondering if .NET has any libs (or a function) i can use to detect if one point collides with another. I am not sure what angles i should use but is there some function like this func(point src, rect target, angle, distanceOfVision, listPointOrRectOfWalls) Pretty unlikely but i dont know a formula or how to start. Its a quick and dirty prototype. I am thinking of writing the func about but dropping angle and just make line of sight a rectangle and check if any points is between src and target.

  I have added a UITableView prototype Cell into a UIView for an iPad application using StoryBoard in Xcode (targeting iOS6). The problem I'm having is that the labels are not being recognized in my viewController when I try to reference them. In my implementation, I have: - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"dashboardMessage"; UITableViewCell *cell = [_tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; } int row = [indexPath row]; cell.messageSender.text = [_matches valueForKey:@"from"]; } The last line is causing an error: Property 'messageSender' Not Found on Object of type UITableViewCell In the cell's header file I have: @interface DashboardMessageCell : UITableViewCell @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *messageSender; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *messageDescr; and the header file is imported into the viewController. I'm lost as to what can be causing the issue, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• [jquery] return the inserted element

  Hello, i'm pretty new to jquery. I'm trying to insert an element to the DOM, and get that element back in my script. Ex: var elem = $("body").append(""); $(elem).show(); but it seems that .append returns the whole jQuery object.. am i supposed to use an ID for the inserted element and always reference it by it?? i really hope that there is a smarter move here. I'm used to do it like that from Prototype..
