• How to create a bookmark under "computer" in the Sidebar of the nautilus file manager in 12.04?

  Somehow, I removed the Downloads bookmark in the Sidebar under "Computer". Is there any way I can make a new one? Possibly with the same icon? I still have my Downloads directory. I just don't have the bookmark under "Computer" anymore, and it has the ordinary folder icon. I know it's not the most significant question, but it's a question nonetheless. Also, I'm not sure, but it may be important to note that I'm using unity 2d.

• How to connect Ethernet via a Huawei Smart AXMT880s modem (with auto-detection)?

  It's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with Ethernet, and the exact same problem : no internet, even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. I'm a total beginner with Ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to explain my issue. English is not my mother tongue. For 2 weeks, I've been doing reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few, but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files. E.g.: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm concerned that I might put figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1? I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number?) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

  I have a small home network and I'm trying to balance the need for security versus convenience. The safest way to secure internal web servers is to only connect using VPNs but this seems overkill to protect a DVRs remote web interface (for example). As a compromise, would it be better to use very large ports numbers? (eg. five digits up to 65531) I've read that port scanners typically only scan the first 10,000 ports so using very high port numbers is a bit more secure. Is this true? Are there better ways to protect web servers? (ie. web guis for applications)

• After a domain change, what can I do to recover lost traffic, rankings, impressions etc? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How do I rename a domain and preserve PageRank? 3 answers I moved my site to a legacy exact-match domain I purchased about a couple of months ago. I have seen significant reduction in traffic, impressions, and rankings. I did all the right steps/best practices: change of address in GWT, map old site hierarchy and match to new site for 301 redirects etc. Indexation has gone through the Google process: old site has all but dissappeared from he index and new site is indexed, albeit with some 404 errors which I am addressing. Does anyone else who has gone through eh domain change process have any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

• Most efficient way to store this collection of moduli and remainders?

  I have a huge collection of different moduli and associated with each modulus a fairly large list of remainders. I want to store these values so that I can efficiently determine whether an integer is equivalent to any one of the remainders with respect to any of the moduli (it doesn't matter which, I just want a true/false return). I thought about storing these values as a linked-list of balanced binary trees, but I was wondering if there is a better way? EDIT Perhaps a little more detail would be helpful. As for the size of this structure, it will be holding about 10s of thousands of (prime-1) moduli and associated to each modulus will be a variable amount of remainders. Most moduli will only have one or two remainders associated to it, but a very rare few will have a couple hundred associated to it. This is part of a larger program which handles numbers with a couple thousand (decimal) digits. This program will benefit more from this table being as large as possible and being able to be searched quickly.   I know some of you have been waiting patiently, so I'm pleased to announce that the JET bundle is now available for download on the Oracle Technology Network. I've migrated most of the content from the old Sun wiki site, and got the download in a single handy location on OTN. Download JET now.  The version available is the current latest, which is 4.9.4. This version contains a number of updates, the most significant of which is the ability to specify slot locations instead of the traditional cXtYdZsN nomenclature. This is pretty useful when trying to Jumpstart multiple servers with SAS2.0 based HBAs, as they will have the WWN embedded in the cXtYdZsN name, and it's pretty difficult to guess what that will be until you've booted the server. • wireless printer - entering WPA - is there a quicker way?

  I have a wireless printer (Brother DCP-585CW). The wireless setup instruction says I should enter the WPA key to the printer. The key is entered using up and down buttons on the printer. So, I am supposed to enter 64 characters using up and down buttons. To enter 1 character, it takes on average (24+10)/2 = 17 times pressing the button (digits start after 24 letters). So 17*64 = 1088 times. Is there a quicker way to setup a wireless printer? Maybe there is a Windows program that discovers printers connected to computer through USB or Ethernet (my printer has both sockets) and allows to pre-configure it for wireless usage (enter the long WPA key)? Update There is BRAdmin program and it allows to set up almost all wireless settings... almost - all except WPA :(

• How do developers find the time to stay on top of latest technologies?

  I was a freelance web developer until circa 2004 when I started going down the management route but have decided to try to get back into development again (specifically JavaScript and HTML5 web/mobile web apps) and I really get the impression to be truly good at these and similar fast moving technologies a constant amount of time is required to be set aside to invest in getting better at existing skills in addition to learning new skills. I understand right now since I am getting back into things there is a pretty steep learning curve, but seeing how good many guys are out there - the only way I see of getting up there is putting in a serious amount of time. For those working as fulltime developers, what I am trying to understand is this - on most days, how much time in the office is spent actually grinding out code compared to learning/research. I could easily spend 2-4 hours daily getting on top of the best ways to go about doing things. Do most good developers who are employed full time invest significant hours outside of work sharpening their skills? Or maybe I'm looking at all of this completely wrong?

  Sometime ago I wrote a predicate equality comparer to be used with LINQ’s Distinct operator. The Distinct operator uses an instance of an internal Set class to maintain the collection of distinct elements in the source collection which in turn checks the hash code of each element (by calling the GetHashCode method of the equality comparer) and only if there’s already an element with the same hash code in the collection calls the Equals method of the comparer to disambiguate. At the time I provided only the possibility to specify the comparison predicate, but, in some cases, comparing a hash code instead of calling the provided comparer predicate can be a significant performance improvement, I’ve added the possibility to had a hash function to the predicate equality comparer. • Is there any Google Adsense revenue if a visitor rolls over (hovers) on an ad unit?

  I have noticed an increase in interactive flash animations especilly on 300px wide adsense ads. Many of them ask the visitor to rollover to either reveal what the ad is about, show a clip, etc. So I wonder: the visitor is giving attention to this ad, is viewing its message -- without clicking on it. In essence, the ad agency's objective is accomplished without a click, which would be a significant money saver if PPC is considered. This seems very ingenious on their part, and I wonder how this is handled by Google. Shouldn't there be a fee for a publisher if visitors interact with ads, regardless of clicks? CTR becomes irrelevant in this context. Are you aware of anything being discussed in this respect?

  I was trying to see the effect of time slicing. And how it can consume significant amount of time. Actually, I was trying to divide a certain work into number of threads and see the effect. I have a two core processor. So two threads can run in parallel. I was trying to see if I have a work w that is done by 2 threads, and if I have the same work done by t threads with each thread doing w/t of the work. • What is the preferred/recommend way of running two version of ubuntu side by side

  I am running 14.04, but I need to run some corporate software/scripts that have been specifically designed for 12.04. I am aware of virtual box/vmware for full virtualization but I am looking for something more lightweight (on my windows machine both come at a significant cost in battery life) closer to os virtualization level. Ideally, I would like something like windows 7/8 compatibility mode: the ability to run a program as if I were on 12.04. Does Ubuntu/Linux have such mechanism? What is the preferred way of running programs/scripts designed for an older version of Ubuntu?

• where do you track team Decisions

  I have been on many development teams and as the team matures decisions about direction are made. These decisions often come back up over and over. Like why don't we fill in this field why didn't we use memcache over a custom solutions. These decisions add up over time and become a significant part of style guides coding standards and unit tests. My question is I have never run into a good way of tracking these decisions or the discovery that went into making them. Does anyone have a best practice.
