• Locale number formatting issue windows 2008

  On a project we have multiple servers running windows 2008. The servers are using the Russian locale. We have several programs that use floating point numbers but the fractional part of the number on SOME servers is getting truncated. Through the regional settings each machine has: Locale: Russian Current Location: United States Decimal Symbol: . (period) I've tried distributing the changes through "Copy Settings" and even though the procedure works it seems like the settings aren't actually being propagated. So next I went into the registry. There is a key called "sDecimal" and in all cases on all servers the value in the key is '.' There is no difference that I can find between the servers that DO have correct decimal formatting and DO NOT. Any advice on where I can look for a problem like this?

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Location-Based redirection and duplication in sub-directories affecting SEO

  I currently own the website www.xyz.com. The website has a sub-directory for each of the 3 target countries: .../en-US/ (United States), .../es-MX/ (Mexico), and .../es-DO/ (Dominican Republic). I have two main questions about this setup: Currently, the main domain/root (xyz.com) contains a blank index.php file, but I would like for a user to be redirected to one of the sub-directories based on their regional location. What is the best way to accomplish this? I have looked at using browser language-based redirection, but how would I know whether to direct a user to the MX or DO site if the browser language is set to spanish? Is there a way to detect a user's geographic location? Also, the 3 websites are practically identical except they all have 3 unique color schemes and the US site is in english while the MX and DO sites are in spanish. My problem is that I believe GoogleBot is penalizing/banning my site because the spanish text on the MX and DO pages are nearly identical and are thus marked as duplicates/spam. Is there a way to avoid this?

• Determining if a visitor left your server

  We have an Apache server running a PHP website. The site is an e-commerce shop. We currently use Barclays as the payment provider but are seeing a lot of customers drop out at the point at which we transfer them to the payment gateway (hosted with Barclays) I can see specific instances in the shop where orders have been created but not paid/failed but I need to ascertain if the user has definitely left our server (or just failed to reach Barclays). Is there anything in any of the server/access logs that states when a user transferred to a different domain?

• How to tweak the appearance of desktop icons in Lubuntu?

  In Ubuntu 11.10 with Nautilus it was possible to tweak the appearance of desktop icons by editing nautilus.css as I had posted in How can I change the text colour on my desktop icons?. In Xubuntu the same can be done by adding a few lines to one's .gtkrc-2.0 as described in How to highlight items on Desktop using xfce?. In both cases, it is possible to assign colors to the various icon states (such as normal, selected and active). My question is this: is it possible to do the same in Lubuntu? PCManFM seems to be responsible but I can't find any GUI or files to edit for the purpose. The default ~/.config/pcmanfm/lubuntu/pcmanfm.conf doesn't have any relevant settings.

Slowly but surely I get the impression Blend in itself is to technical for the designer in question.   There was a recent weather event in the United States that seriously impacted our power grid and our physical well being. Lots of businesses found that they couldn’t get to their building or that their building was gone. Many of them got to do a full test of their disaster recovery processes. A big part of DR is having the ability to get yourself back online in a different location. Now, most of us are not going to be paying for multiple sites, but, we need the ability to move to one if needed. The best thing you can to start to set this up is have an off-site backup. Want an easy way to automate that? I mean, yeah, you can go to tape or to a portable drive (much more likely these days) and then carry that home, but we’ve all got access to offsite storage these days, SkyDrive, DropBox, S3, etc. How about just backing up to there?   we recently changed our plesk server's main URL from siteold.com to sitenew.com. many websites had their NS set to ns1.siteold.com - does plesk automatically update that to need ns1.sitenew.com? should I change the godaddy settings? attempting to change them states "Nameserver Not Registered" - is this simply the delay required? lastly, when adding a new domain to plesk, one would simply need to adjust the nameserver for that site in godaddy to ns1.sitenew.com or ns1.newdomain.com? (does plesk have a centralized name server, or does each site acquire its own?)

  I was thinking about developing a sidescrolling platformer very similar to an old Mario and Luigi game for NES. To start out I was thinking about taking the images from a site like this: http://www.mariouniverse.com/sprites/nes/smb3 Which clearly states a copyright. I was wondering how far I am allowed to take these images. I figure I'm probably allowed to use it for personal development, but what if I publish the game as an exe file and send it to some friends? I figured a definite no-no would be selling the game with the copyrighted images included.   I was always wondering about two things I tend to do in my little projects. Sometimes I will have this design: class FooClass ... self.foo = "it's a bar" self._do_some_stuff(self) def _do_some_stuff(self): print(self.foo) And sometimes this one: class FooClass2 ... self.do_some_stuff(foo="it's a bar") def do_some_stuff(self, foo): print(foo) Although I roughly understand the differences between functional and class approaches, I struggle with the design. For example, in FooClass the self.foo is always accessible as an attribute. If there are numerous calls to it, is that faster than making foo a local variable that is passed from method to method (like in FooClass2)? What happens in memory in both cases? If FooClass2 is preferred (ie. I don't need to access foo) and other attributes inside do not change their states (the class is executed once only and returns the result), should the code then be written as a series of functions in a module?

• Disabling eth0 Module on a Macbook Aluminum

  The Ubuntu page for my device states the following at the bottom (Known Issues) PowerTOP reports that the module for the 10/100/1000 interface wakes the processor 100+x/sec, accounting for 50% of wakeups on an idle system. This dramatically shortens battery life. One potential solution is to unload this module if you only use wireless. I only use wireless, but I could not find instructions to "unload the module". I have a feeling if I try something related to this, but not the same, battery life will not improve and my eth0 won't work. Anyone have a good guide on this?

  I'm going on vacation to Paris, France for 10 days. Actually, it's my girlfriend's wish to go there but I'm not very interested in visiting, sightseeing, etc. Recently, I came up with an idea of trying to do something like programming tourism. :) I'd like to do something related to programming in a startup-like company. I do not want a salary or any kind of compensation. I want to overview process, social aspects, environment and "what it feels like" to development software in another country. I'm from Russia. I've been a software developer since 2003. I prefer C#4 but I'm ready to use anything Turing-complete. I have some MS certifications and am familiar with all .NETs since 1.1. Currently I'm finishing PhD in CS. I'm interested in multidimensional indexing and I can turn any piece of data and code to OLAP system. :) But it'd take too much time. What can I do? I have no more than one week. I want a totally complete project in a short amount of time. Implement some features in well-tested project Do a code review Debug memory, performance and concurrency issues Do unit testing So, about the questions: Is it legal? I'm ready to sign NDA if it's necessary. I'll have tourist visa. Is it possible? I'm really sure that bureaucratic companies with lots of HRs and PMs will not allow such experiments. But small companies can afford it. I'm ready to guarantee support on my code after leaving home :) P.S. I still havn't started learning French :) I hope it will not take too much time :) P.P.S. Yes, it's girlfriend-approved. What's in it for me? It's fun. It's fun to see new systems and people who created them. It's fun to complete meaningful things. Quickly. What's in it for them? Feature, debug, review or test. If my short-term colleagues will like this style of working I can invite them to make same trip into my company :) I think in Russia it's even more exciting :)

• Ubuntu not mounted?

  In Live CD i went in the terminal and when i do 'sudo update-grub' it responds /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). Here's the breakdown of my drive: sda1 - vfat - Windows 7: FAT32 sda2 - sda3 - nfs - Windows Vista/7: NTFS - Windows 7 sda3/Wubi: - sda4 - Grub2 sda5 - Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS sda6 - sda7 - sda8 - BIOS Boot Partition Also at the top of the page it states : = No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda Any and all help is appreciated and welcomed. When my computer boots, it goes into GRUB and has the options for Windows 7 and Windows Memory Test but no option for Ubuntu. I want to run a dual-boot through it.

• Ubutnu 12.04 mdadm inactive

  For a while now, my RAID 5 has ceased to work. Everytime I tried "madm --detail /dev/md127", its states all the drive and drive info, but that two of the drives have been removed. After some restarts, doing the same thing, i am getting /dev/md127 does not appear to be active. When I go into DiskUtil, I can see all 6 Hard Drives healthy and present, and i can see the Raid 5 at the bottom under Multi-disk Devices. However, the Raid says 0.0kb, and is not active. Please help and let me know how to proceed from here. I would really like to avoid rebuilding the RAID, especially because all 6 drives seem to be healthy and present. Thanks so much.

• Triggering State Changes with Health Counter

  I'm developing a game where the player changes states as their health decreases. Below 50, it should trigger animation1. Below 30, it should trigger animation2. The problem is, I only want to trigger animation1 once. But my game timer is checking every "frame", so it's triggering animation1 every cycle below 50. I only want it to trigger once, then not again until it's gone over 50 and then naturally decreased back to below 50. Are there any tried and true strategies for triggering state changes as a timer counts down (without the over-triggering problem)? I thought I could say: if (health == 50) animation1.play(); but sometimes, health never equals exactly 50, so it will skip right past that statement.

• Is it possible/likely to be paid fairly without a college degree? [closed]

  Some back story, and then my question: I took a "break" from getting a university education last year to work full time as back end developer on a GIS application at $10.50 an hour. Later that year I was hired on by a fairly prestigious organization on their GIS application for a meager salary + rockin' benefits (not that I need them). I agreed to work on this project through Summer 2012. I don't feel like I'm being fairly compensated for my time. Other team members make between 3-5 times as much as I do, and their work isn't 3-5 times as good as mine, nor do they have 3-5 times as much output. I don't think this is a rectifiable situation within this institution. They've got a set of personnel charts and the way it gets computed, I make less money than any of the janitors (who are very good, and very nice people to boot, and I'm glad they get paid so well. I wish everyone got livable wages). I'm pretty bright, but school's a drag. I don't want mega bucks, I just want $40k/yr (localized to the southeast united states) so I can save enough money to travel, or maybe "finish [my] education". My question is this: Are people without degrees ever compensated commensurate with other people who have degrees? As a someone who never "finished their education", how badly do you think this as hurt you? How do you navigate the job seeking and hiring process? As someone who hires programmers, do you pay more for diplomas? Is that an institutional necessity, or based on your own value judgement?
