• Wake-on-lan only works so many times

  I have Wake-on-lan configured on my Windows XP machine so that the computer will wake up from Standby. Waking the computer from Standby via network traffic seems to work a certain number of times, say 4 or 5, then it stops working. If I restart the computer it seems to reset this behavior so that I can use WOL a few more times before it starts working. I use the command "wol" on my other, Linux machine with the appropriate IP address and MAC address of the card. I looked at the network card to see if it had different lights when WOL worked and when it didn't. When it has a solid amber light where the ethernet cable connects, WOL seems to work. When it has a flashing amber light, WOL does not. It seems that the system seems to almost "shut off" the card when it falls to sleep, but I don't know if this is a function of time or number of standby/wakeups. I have a 3Com 3c920 network card. If I look at the properties in Device Manager, I have "Allow this Device to bring the Computer out of Standby" checked. In the Advanced tab I have anything related to RWU (Remote Wake Up) enabled. I also believe I have the appropriate settings in BIOS related to Remote Wake-Up and I have tried both S1 and S3 power configurations in the BIOS. Intuitively, I would think I would uncheck "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power", but doing so disables the "Allow this Device to bring the Computer out of Standby" option. Does anyone know what is happening here or if there is a way to fix it? I have an integrated network card; would getting one that goes into a slot be better? I am running Windows XP on a Dell Optiplex GX240 with a 3Com 3c920 network card.

• Why does the screen resolution of 1440x900 suddenly disappears from Intel GMA Control Panel?

  I'm using a Vostro 1200 laptop with the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset powering its graphics and running Vista 32-bit SP2 . I've been using the Vostro with a Dell SE198WFP LCD Monitor as the external display since day one for about two years without any problems. Recently, I plugged the Vostro into a couple of other monitors. The problem is, now the native resolution for my main monitor's (the SE198WFP) resolution of 1440x900 @ 60 Hz is no longer available. (See below) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers as well as the monitor drivers to no avail. I've Goggled that this problem and it appears that this has happened to other people but all the answers involve people giving up in frustration or reinstalling; both terrible outcomes. Has anybody ever figured why this happens and have a good solution? Thanks. UPDATE: This dude has a complicated solution, which I haven't tried yet. His explanations for the problem was After an exausting search for an answer to the matter of why my brand new 19? widescreen monitor’s native resolution (1440×900) was unavailible (sic) in the display properties, I finally stumbled upon an article a person posted on Intel’s forums that basically explained what shannanigans Intel had been up to with their GMA 950 line of onboard graphic solutions. Not very comforting.

• Parallels 6 - Is It Just Me or Does It Run Really Slowly?

  I've been running Parallels since version 2 with great success. I use it as my .Net development environment and over the last few years have converted so many others to the Parallels/Mac way of doing Windows/.Net development that I feel I should be getting perks/gifts and/or freebies from Parallels Corporation ;-) A month or so ago I upgraded to version 6 and ... immediately wished I hadn't. I'm currently running it on a laptop - a 2009 MacBook Pro (13"/2.53Ghz/4GB) while my MacPros at work and home are still running v5. I have seen nothing in v6 that makes me want to upgrade the install on those. The general problem is performance - upon starting or suspending a vm (always Windows 7 Ultimate), OS X slows down, quite often freezing for a minute or two at a time. The performance of the vms themselves are fine, but for me the point of this set-up is to be able to do web-browsing, email checking etc. on the OS X side of things while doing the stuff that can only be done on Windows (Visual Studio, SQL Server tools) on Windows. I have been using Parallels for a while so at least feel like I know what I'm doing so at the moment I am heading towards forming an opinion that its Parallels thats to blame. I've tweaked and tweaked all the vm configuration properties but to no avail. Support emails to the company have all received replies - there are no documented case of the issue you mention. Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, have you found a fix?

• Prevent Outlook 2010 Insert Picture resizing image

  When I "Insert Picture" a JPEG in Outlook 2010 it automatically resizes the image and, I think, recompresses it too. I realise this would be useful for photographs or for people who try to email 1MB BMPs but I would like to email around an image at the original pixel size without recompression. Is there a way to turn this off, or better still choose settings for each image insert? I found this page in the Office help. It's for Word, PowerPoint and Excel not Outlook but points you at File, Options, Advanced, Image Settings. There's no equivalent section in Outlook. I know Outlook uses Word as its editor so I've looked at Word's settings but there isn't an 'original size' here: there's only 'turn off image recompression' and pick target DPI from 96, 150, 220. I guess Office is finding a DPI value in the JPEG file and scaling it up or down to match this setting. I can't find an equivalent option in Outlook's options menu but there's so many settings and pop-up dialogs I may have missed something. Picture Format, Reset image size resets the image to the rescaled version, not the original. I can't see a way to edit a pixel value into size values in the image properties after insert. Thanks! I realise I can probably achieve this by editing the image metadata in PhotoShop elements or similar but there ought to be a way without editing the file? This is new behaviour in Outlook 2010; 2007 didn't do this.

• Group Policy for DNS Server Addresses

  This question deals strictly with the methodology of using Active Directory to publish DNS settings and controlling the DNS server address order to domain attached clients. This is not asking about if this is the right function, role, or best use of group policy; but rather, how to make it work. I would like to be able to publish in group policy DNS addresses and possibly control the order in which the client consumes the addresses. I have tried following the information from this site without success. I set the following setting within group policy, but the client never shows the settings within the TCP/IP properties. Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/DNS Client/DNS Servers I did list them as a single space separated list. For example, the following: 192.168.0.1 192.168.10.3 192.168.34.2 192.168.2.67 192.168.56.99 192.168.99.23 This would be for Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 clients. I am not sure what I am doing wrong or how to get this to work. Am I missing a setting? Do I need to set something differently?

• Windows File Access Denied

  I seem to have a general problem with "access denied on Windows". It manifests itself every time if e.g: My bat file calls a compiler creates a file on disk My bat file renames a file But I also have files downloaded (FireFox) to Windows desktop where Windows is giving me "access denied" if I try delete the file. Tried disable AVG + make exception in AVG resident shield (I have tried checking with Task Manager + Winternals process explorer that it is not process running still running that should cause the locks.) Windows 7. My user account is an administrator. All files are created by same user account. The problem is recent, but some things I first noticed yesterday (when I started calling .bat files again which I have used for many years) I have tried: Starting e.g. Windows Explorer with "run as administrator", but that makes no difference right-click - properties - security and changes permissions/ownership (I also get "access denied" when trying this so this does not help) Here is a ascreenshot if I try change security of a "locked" file. (The problem here is the locking occurs continously every time the file is created) ! If I click on, it states I am not the owner? Which baffles me as I just created it. (Yes, through a .bat file calling executables that create the file. But all running under my administrator user account. Interestingly after having this dialog open, the file somehow sometimes suddenly seem to allow me delete it)

• How to host multiple FLEX applications in IIS7

  Hello, I manually deploy a FLEX application to my web server (IIS 7). There are two virtual directories, 1.) Default 2.) myFlexApp1. myFlexApp1 is where my working FLEX application resides. I now need to deploy a different FLEX application (let's call it myFlexApp2) to the same web server. I set up a virtual directory for [myFlexApp2] and it complains about the "bindings" using port 80, which is already used by [myFlexApp1]. I have tried to give them separate host names in their bindings properties. For example, myFlexApp1.mydomain.com and myFlexApp2.mydomain.com. I can never get [myFlexApp2] to show from an external browser. I was able to get only one or the other to display, but never could run both. Here is what I need: myFlexApp1.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp1 calendar.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp2 test.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp1 where test.mydomain.com is the default URL. Is this possible? What am I doing wrong? I even tried to edit the hosts file in [C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc] but that didnt work either. How can I serve up two FLEX applications on IIS 7? It shouldn't be this hard!

• Dual-monitor Windows XP, monitors are "identified wrong"

  Trying to use a dual-monitor desktop system with Windows XP.... 1 graphics card... with digital/analog outputs. Picking: Desktop - Properties - Settings - Identify It shows "2" as my left monitor... and "1" as my right. How do I switch them around? Here's what I've tried so far: Switch the cables (I can't. I need the digital cable on the better monitor.) Switch the monitors (I can't. One has a few dead pixels.) Drag the 1+2 graphics around (That doesn't change the IDENTIFY numbers.) Pick "use as primary" or "extend" (That doesn't change the IDENTIFY numbers.) Anything else I can try? What exactly controls/switches the "IDENTIFY numbers" around? I know it can be done. For weeks I ran this exact set-up... with the CORRECT numbers appearing on the monitors.... then just recently... after a few reboots... they now appear "switched around".

• SQL 2008 R2 replication error: The process could not connect to Distributor

  I have two servers running SQL 2008 R2 Standard, each with an instance named "MAIN". I have a small test database on my primary server (one table, 13 rows) that I want to replicate to a second server as a proof-of-concept for some larger databases that I want to replicate. I set up the primary server to be a publisher and distributor, and set the database to do transactional replication. I copied the data to the second server via a backup/restore, not via a snapshot (which I'll have to do with the larger databases due to database size and limited bandwidth). I followed the instructions here: http://gnawgnu.blogspot.com/2009/11/sql-2008-transactional-replication-and.html Now on the subscriber, I go under Replication / Local Subscriptions / Right click / Properties on my subscription to the DB. The status of the last synchronization shows a status of: "The process could not connect to Distributor 'PRIMARYSERVER\MAIN'." Data IS replicating from the primary to the secondary. Any record I add on the primary shows up on the secondary server within seconds. Is the Distributor part of the Snapshot system that I'm not using, or is it part of the transaction replication stuff? • Nokia E75 Mail for Exchange

  Hi, I have a SBS2003 runing Exchange Server 2003 SP2. My OWA has a godaddy certificate valid for 3 years to come installed. HTTPS works fine for OWA. The certificate has also been copied into the Nokia E95 I am trying to syncronize my Nokia E75 via Mail for Exchange to my mail account on the Exchange server. These are the steps i use: Menu Email New Start Select Internet Gateway Than i enter the details: [email protected] I select company email Mail for Exchange In the domain menu i enter : mydomain In the username/password menu i enter : myusername/mypassword In the server menu i enter : mail.mydomain.com (where the DNS resolves into the server's IP address) In the secure access i select : Internet / Secure / 443 NOTE : port 443 has been opened on my SBOX and forwarded to the exchange server. On IIS default website properties directory security secure communications edit the "Require Secure Channel SSL" is enabled. However, when i try to sync my phone i get the following error code: * Mail for Exch permissions illegal. Check permission configuration. * The phone log gives the following information : Username or Password Illegal. Correct Username and/or Password in the profile options. I've tried speaking with the Phone service support but they cannot identify the problem. Any help will be much apreciated.

• Known USB 2.0 devices don't install driver, but must be manually forced

  When a known USB 2.0 device is plugged in and detected, it doesn't install the driver correctly but shows a Code 28 error and lists the device under "Other Devices" in Device Manager. When view properties of this device , it shows the following status; The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver. When updating the driver manually and selecting the appropriate driver Windows doesn't believes it's the correct driver, but you can force the installation and it works! The other condition the driver will auto-install is when the same USB device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Power related issues are not also causing this as I have tried vi a Docking station, USB hub. etc.. Devices tried; Jabra Headset USB-Mass Storage Device (flash disk and ext HD) MS Wireless Keyboard & Mouse USB Ethernet controller (USB-MAC controller) This is on a laptop part of a Domain with Windows 7 Ent 7601, I am logged in as a local administrator. There isn't any Group Policies blocking not signed driver or whitelisted devices on the domain. Any suggestions please feel free

• Why is my hg workbench & Adobe Reader toolbar icon a blank white page?

  On my work's PC (windows 7 32bit) all Adobe Reader and hg Workbench icons on the toolbar (and general shortcuts for hg workbench) are just white pages (with the top left corner folded over). If you right click on the toolbar icon then right click on "TortoiseHg Workbench"(for hg workbench) then "Properties" then the "Change Icon..." button is greyed out (same for "Adobe Reader X"). Also the "Target:" is "TortoiseHg 2.4.0 (x86)" and is greyed out also the "Open File Location" is greyed out. This is the same for both Hg Workbench and Adobe Reader and seems to be the only thing that connects them. I have tried reinstalling to no avail. I also have local admin rights on the PC. I finally I have tried the following following questions without any luck (they aren't quite relevant to my issue but close): Adobe Reader program icon and pdf icons don't appear in Windows 7 Adobe PDF icon disappeared? Encase my description isn't enough to understand the issue here is a screenshot. As you can see the Hg Workbench icon (far left) and a pdf open in Adobe Reader X (second icon to from the left) are both blank and the shortcut is mainly greyed out.

  Dear Serverfault community, After researching a number of distributed file systems for deployment in a production environment with the main purpose of performing both batch and real-time distributed computing I've identified the following list as potential candidates, mainly on maturity, license and support: Ceph Lustre GlusterFS HDFS FhGFS MooseFS XtreemFS The key properties that our system should exhibit: an open source, liberally licensed, yet production ready, e.g. a mature, reliable, community and commercially supported solution; ability to run on commodity hardware, preferably be designed for it; provide high availability of the data with the most focus on reads; high scalability, so operation over multiple data centres, possibly on a global scale; removal of single points of failure with the use of replication and distribution of (meta-)data, e.g. provide fault-tolerance. The sensitivity points that were identified, and resulted in the following questions, are: transparency to the processing layer / application with respect to data locality, e.g. know where data is physically located on a server level, mainly for resource allocation and fast processing, high performance, how can this be accomplished? Do you from experience know what solutions provide this transparency and to what extent? posix compliance, or conformance, is mentioned on the wiki pages of most of the above listed solutions. The question here mainly is, how relevant is support for the posix standard? Hadoop for example isn't posix compliant by design, what are the pro's and con's? what about the difference between synchronous and asynchronous opeartion of a distributed file system. Though a synchronous distributed file system has the preference because of reliability it also imposes certain limitations with respect to scalability. • 4.4.1 Timeout in 10 minute intervals SMTP on batch email jobs

  I am running a job that uses SMTP and it can run in excess of an hour, emailing the entire time. It's not my code but a workflow based app so I just get a form to configure the mail server, subj, msg, etc and can't see it's implementation. I know it is .NET and SmtpClient. I have been seeing 4.4.1 timeouts every 10 minutes being reported by the application as the response from the server. The # of emails in those 10 minute sessions are variable, between 100 and below 150 which leads me to ask about the 10 minute timeout time specifically. I have found there are several exchange properties (though I don't know what version they are running) that set timeout limits. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232205%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx) Would those values for ConnectionInactivityTimeOut and ConnectionTimeout be the controlling the timeouts? and finally I would like to ask if exchange considers the consistent connection(s) it kept receiving from the same source as one continuous connection and cause the timeout each 10 minutes and cause the timeout? I am using a static ip of the mail server. Thanks if anyone can shed any light on my problem. EDIT - It is my belief that the library is just keeping the connections around and isn't wrapped in any cleanup code or using statement. That said, I still haven't made any progress on this issue in the last year and just requeue the failed ones as I see them.

• Disable or remove filter driver for single HID device

  Running Windows XP in a corporate setting here. I have an issue where a filter driver is interfering with the functionality of different USB HIDs. For example graphics tablets do not respond while the filter driver is in place. I've also had the issue with foot pedals used with transcription software. My question is really two fold: A) what makes Windows use a filter driver on one HID but not another? B) when a filter driver is causing conflicts how can I disable it on the affected devices? Background I've previously narrowed down the issue to the filter driver by uninstalling the software (Funk Proxy Host) responsible for the filter driver. The software is a type of RDP we use here at work. (I might have even booted into safe mode and renamed the file, I forget). I believe the filter driver is present to disable or modify the use of the local keyboard and mouse while admin staff are assisting users. Either way I don't have the authority to just go uninstalling this software. As far as I can tell the software versions are the same, however I'm not sure if the device driver definitions are all the same as I don't know where these things would be located. To check for the presence of the filter driver I locate the hardware device in Device Manager, click Properties Driver tab Driver Details.... It shows up as ph32ihid.sys. Even though all machines are meant to have the same SOE and do have Funk Proxy Host installed I don't always have issues with the same HIDs. A few machines here the foot pedals without any issues. I've not had any machines work with the graphics tablet without uninstalling Funk software. Driver details I've just read up a bit more about filter drivers and found the drivers description in the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProxyHostHIDFilter" There it's called "Kernel-mode HID filter driver for the Proxy Host". Presumably I could also disable it here but that would be system wide which is probably not desirable?

• External HDD incorrectly detected as internal - how change to enable hot swap/eject?

  Hi All, I have win 7 x64 Home Prem. The HDD is a seagate barracuda, 7200.7 ST3120827AS. 3.5", Serial: 3ms006n6, Firmware: 3.42 (no further updates) NexStar CX External case (drivers installed). I have three drives: WD320 with OS installed WD750 data storage (internal) seagate 120 (external) - connected via esata board connected to sata on motherboard (MSI p43 neo) Tried uninstalling HDD in device manager to no effect. Also the internal WD750 is detected as an external drive and win taskbar icon allows for it to be ejected (unlike the seagate). All drives are configured - Online, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Active, Primary Partition (except c drive). The seagate was previously used as a primary disk with XP operating system so I deleted the volume and created/reformatted (not quick). HDD is no longer "Active". But did not fix problem. Background Originally, I installed win 7 with the bios set to IDE and forgot to install the chipset drivers. Then I changed win 7 to install the AHCI drivers, changed the bios to AHCI and rebooted. Win 7 loaded drivers but WD HDD gave problems/crashed. I installed chipset drivers and latest intell storage matrix software thingie (in safe mode). Everything worked fine after that except for the problem of not corrrectly detecting the external drive] I have noticed that under the driver properties (and similarly in the registry) the two drives are configured differently (e.g. in driver details property capabilities for the WD the value is set to 0000006, CM_DEVCAP_REMOVABLE & EJECTSUPPORTED - whereas the seagate shows 0000080 & CM_DEVCAP_SURPRISEREMOVALOK). Any easy way to configure things? • Why can't I use my Bluetooth Headset with my laptop?

  I just received a new Plantronics M50 bluetooth headset. It works great with my phone, but I can't get it working with my laptop. What are the things I should be checking? Here's what I've done so far: It pairs successfully: It's not in multipoint mode--it's only paired to my laptop I've installed all available drivers from Plantronics and Dell I have no (!) in Device Manager (though I don't see the headset there either--would I?) I can "configure" the headset by double clicking on it: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked in the Bluetooth radio settings Apps that let me choose the playback/mic device only list my laptop, not the headset [UPDATE] I went into the Bluetooth device's properties and Checked "headset" under the services tab. This was successful but hasn't delivered any functionality as far as I can tell I'd like to use this headset for VOIP conferencing (Goto meeting, Gmail voice chat, G+ hangouts, Skype, etc.) and listening to music (iTunes). Where else should I be digging? Is it possible that this new headset is simply not compatible with computers (i.e. it's only compatible with phones)?

• Menu command stuck on screen

  For some reason, periodically when I select a menu command, the command label gets "stuck" on the screen and won't go away. I can close all open applications, including whichever one I was using when it got stuck, but it still won't go away. In the screenshot below, I opened an new instance of IE just to show how the label stays on top. The label was not created by this instance of IE. Edit with the source: The label that gets stuck is the first menu command I select in IE. If a label is already stuck, a new one does not get stuck (regardless of which instance(s) of IE are involved). Based on this knowledge, I now just open IE on my secondary monitor, carefully open the context menu so the Properties command is in the bottom corner, and click it. This is not a solution... The label never moves and is transparent to mouse input (if I click it, it's as if I clicked the item behind it). The label does not go away if I close all running applications. I haven't tried stopping services or closing system tray items like Live Mesh. The label does go away if I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Any ideas how I can stop this from happening? It's happened a half dozen times since yesterday and it's becoming quite disrupting to my work. Obviously I added the circle in MS Paint. That part isn't stuck. ;)

• IIS virtual location path

  Sorry in advance, for this seems to be a very noobish question and should be easily fixable, yet I can't work it out: I am setting up windows authentication for a website running on IIS 8.5: The Yii framework of the website takes input like http://localhost/mywebsite/index.php/site/loginand processes it, using the "login" action of the "site" Controller. I flipped on URL Rewrite to have nicer URLs, leaving the URL with /mywebsite/site/login. Now I need to set up windows authentication for this location. Very specifically ONLY for this very exact location. Only the /site/login location of mywebsite needs to have authentication. Every other location needs to have anonymous. Since it is a "virtual location", I don't know how to do it. I can set up win-auth for files, directories, virtual directories, etc. but not for virtual locations that do not map to any file but only to a Controller/Action in Yii. The working counterpart in Apache is but i can't "translate this into IIS". I have read that IIS does have the "~" symbol but I just couldn't make it work yet. Could it be used to achieve authentication on a location basis? I have looked around virtual directories as well, which seem to simply be a kind of "symlink" to actual folders on the harddrive. Can they be used differently to "create a virtual folder in a location that doesn't really exist to manage its properties"? Help is much appreciated.

I have website on my iis 7.0 server: www.mysite.com I desided to create virtual directory sales under my site which is pointing to website root directory.Now I need create redirect url for the vdir. The vdir is pointing same virtual root directory as my site root is The big idea is that i can write on browser www.mysite/sales and i will automaticly redirect to url www.mysite.com?productid=200. I tried to make redirect with rewite url for vdir(not website), but I always get this error message : cannot add duplicate colletion entry of type 'rule' with unique key key attribute 'name' set to "test".This happens when i am pointing for virtual vdir and try to add rule. I can add rules to website level,but rules doesn work. I mean url www.mysite/sales gives me follwing error. I know that key is unique I checked it from web.config. This kind of feature was really easy use in IIS 6.0, just point vdir with your mouse and set properties--a redirect to url. Please some one explain what is right way to do it in IIS 7.0

• How to monitor bandwidth use of each device on wifi network

  I have in my home a standard Comcast cable internet connection. I have it going from the wall to a cable modem, and from the modem to a late-series Linksys router, which provides wired and wireless networking. The vast majority of the users are wireless connections. For day-to-day tasks, this connection is fully sufficient for all my needs. However, on regular occassions, we have social gatherings that involve many people bringing laptops and other PCs and using the network and internet simultaneously, frequently for gaming. I have no administrative oversight over these machines; they have been known to be riddled with spyware and/or bloatware or be running torrents, legal or otherwise. The only reason I care is that on a regular basis, one of the machines will flatline my internet bandwith, and consume it all in order to upload/download/spam people/whatever. My question is: Is there a system I can set up whereby I can easily monitor the various systems connected to my wireless connection, see how much bandwith each one is using, and for what ends? That way, at a glance, I can spot the offending machine and kick it from the connection, without having to go from machine to machine, checking each one's "bandwith used" properties manually, and dealing with the owner's indignant protests all the while. I understand this will likely involve 3rd-party software and/or hardware; my issue is I don't even know where to begin.

• Users are getting a temporary profile

  A bit about current setup: It is windows 2008 R2 AD servers (all of them are 2008R2) and couple locations which set as Sites. Each location has DFS on AD server. Roaming profiles are not used nor configured. Users have their home folder configured as mapped S: drive to DFS shared folder. For example: in profile tab user has: Home Folder - connect - S: to \\domain.com\dc\users\%username% We also have redirected Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders to \\domain.com\dc\users. Everything was fine. Suddenly (today), users in most locations lost their local profile (both XP and W7 desktops) and got temporary profiles. Also, it looks like local profile was created today (from folder properties). I checked events at couple machines and there is not errors related to profiles or logon process. I do not see issues in event logs at servers as well. Basically, I run out of ideas what is wrong and why machines lost their local profiles. PS: Laptop users do not have their folders redirected, but lost profiles as well.

• TEMP environment variable occasionally set incorrectly

  Occasionally, I find my TEMP and TMP environment variables set to C:\Windows\TEMP. They should be set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp, and are configured correctly in System Properties. This manifests itself as error messages like the following: ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS2001: Source file 'C:\Windows\TEMP\gb_pz65v.0.cs' could not be found error CS2008: No inputs specified ...which occurs in various .NET applications (in particular Visual Studio 2010 or SQL Server Management Studio). Alternatively, SQL Server Management Studio will report: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: viewInfo (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlStudio.Explorer) If I run PowerShell elevated, then $env:TEMP is set correctly. If I run PowerShell non-elevated, then it's not. I believe that it should be set correctly in both cases. If not, it's the wrong way round. The same is true for CMD.EXE. Rebooting fixes it, temporarily, until something breaks it again. Presumably something loaded into Explorer.exe is messing with its environment variables, but what? The values in the registry are correct, even while this is happening: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment has TEMP = %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp HKCU\Environment has TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp By setting a breakpoint on shell32!RegenerateUserEnvironment, I'm able to trap it when it happens, but I still don't know why explorer.exe is reading the wrong environment variables. I can reproduce it consistently by broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message (I wrote a one-line C++ program to do this). Watching the activity in Process Monitor shows that explorer.exe doesn't even look at HKCU\Environment. What is going on?

• How To Monitor Home Wireless Network Connected Devices Bandwith

I have it going from the wall to a cable modem, and from the modem to a late-series Linksys router, which provides wired and wireless networking. The vast majority of the users are wireless connections. For day-to-day tasks, this connection is fully sufficient for all my needs. However, on regular occassions, we have social gatherings that involve many people bringing laptops and other PCs and using the network and internet simultaneously, frequently for gaming. I have no administrative oversight over these machines; they have been known to be riddled with spyware and/or bloatware or be running torrents, legal or otherwise. The only reason I care is that on a regular basis, one of the machines will flatline my internet bandwith, and consume it all in order to upload/download/spam people/whatever. • Windows Search not searching in files

  I am trying to get Windows Search to work on my Windows Server 2008 SP2 fileserver, so I can search in files for content. I have added the Windows Search Service role to the server, and using the right-click properties in Explorer set some folders to "Index this location". The problem is that neither on the server or remotely can I search in the files. I seem to get some inconsistencies in the GUIs, for example the "Indexing Options" panel shows me just 6 locations indexed, but if I click "Modify" I see nearly everything ticked. For example, the "SeachTest" folder under "infrastructure" has the "index this location" option ticked, but the "Projects" folder does not. I assume this is why some are grey and some not, but they are all ticked. T The "SearchTest" folder contains some files that have nothing but the text PurpleOrange in it, so I should be able to find those. So, to summarise: Which locations are indexed? The ones in the "Index these locations" list, the ones ticked, or the ones not greyed-out in the list? How do I get to the state where I can click in the search box and type PurpleOrange and see the files?
