• What's wrong with my MAC address?

  I have a D-Link DSL-2650U router, and exactly one computer on the network. For reasons of port forwarding I want to give my computer a static internal IP address, so that I don't take the chance of losing my NAT settings every time the computer reboots. So here's a screen shot that summarizes the entire problem: WTH is wrong with my MAC address? It's copied and pasted from the command prompt window! I tried editing out the dashes, but it still doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a bug in the D-Link firmware?

• HDMI connection does not support HDCP

  Hi, My problem: error message when playing blu-ray movies stating that the HDCP encryption could not be established. My setup: A new projector (EPSON EMP TW700) with a HDCP-compliant HDMI port a PC with a brand-new graphics adapter (Sapphire HD 4350 512MB DDR2) supporting HDCP Connection made with a DVI cable (it's installed in my wall) and a DVI-HDMI adapter to connect the projector Latest drivers and software My questions: What can I do to establish the HDCP connection? Would it help to use the HDMI output of the graphics adapter instead of the DVI (could it be that the HDCP chip is only supported on HDMI?) Any other ideas? I am very thankful for any hint.

• Has anyone had luck getting an external hard drive working with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

• Cable installed - now my hub has no connection the router/modem - what do I need to buy?

The cable company provided 2 wireless N USB adapters. What do I need to buy to plug into where in order to restore the network to its previous state? PC1 dual boots Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12. • FTP error when doing file transfer

  I'm running vsftpd version 3.0.2 over FTPeS, and I'm having a bit of trouble with file transfers. It seems to work fine when I'm on the LAN, but not from an external IP address. I have the control port and data ports open on my server's software firewall and my router's firewall. When I'm using the service from an external IP address, it seems like sometimes a file transfer will complete, but it times out and I always get the client error: "426 Failure writing network stream". I've tried several clients. I'm thinking there is some sort of data sabotage either at the router or some server policy; maybe because I'm using passive ftp? Suggestions?

The user id is use by an application to access the database. However, this account does not exits on this server.   We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

  I've started a headless virtualbox instance with this command: VBoxManage startvm "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" --type headless Waiting for VM "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" to power on... VM "Ensembl67VirtualMachine" has been successfully started. It is set up with Remote Desktop Server Port:5555 with Authentication Method: Null and Extended Features: Allow Multiple Connections and it's now running, but I don't know how to connect to it from the same laptop where it's running. I would like to be able to have it running on a terminal. I tried this but nothing happens: rdesktop localhost:5555 ERROR: localhost: unable to connect rdesktop 192.168.1.1:5555 Any ideas?

• rdesktop + seamlessrdp + virtualbox slow on Windows

  I'm trying to get VirtualBox seamless mode to work on all of my monitors at once. I was directed to this link, so I followed the instructions, using the windows port of rdesktop 1.6 found here, and using Xming as an X server. I eventually finally got it to work! However, it's really slow. While VirtualBox's regular seamless mode is as performant as if I was running apps on my host machine, with rdesktop it takes 1-2 seconds to register any user input. Dragging windows around is laggy and buggy (pieces of the desktop behind the window show through). I'm simply connecting to localhost, so network bandwidth/latency shouldn't be an issue... anyone have any idea why it's so slow and what I can do to make it more performant?

• How to write a ProxyPass rule to go from HTTPS to HTTP in IIRF

  I have a server which is running a web app that self serves HTTP. I'm wanting to use IIS6 (on the same server) to provide a HTTPS layer to this web app. From what I can tell doing a reverse proxy will allow me to do this. IIRF seems like the tool to do this job. There are no domain names involved.... its all ip numbers. So I think I want :- https:<ipnumber>:5001 to send all its requests to the same server but on a different port and use HTTP ( not exposed to the net ) http:<ipnumber>:5000 but not sure how to go about it with IIRF, I'm not entirely sure how to write the rules? I think I need to make a virtual web app on 5001 using HTTPS? then add a rules file.

  I have a linksys WRT54GL router with a DD-WRT installed and I want to setup some advanced filtering that seem to not be available through "Access restrictions" web gui option. I guess I would be using IPTABLES then. I have ssh access to router and can run iptables, but I'm not so experienced with iptables. So here are my needs: my policy would be deny all first and then allow exceptions allow all http (port 80) access to WAN through wireless allow all other traffic only to PCs with specific MAC addresses allow internet access to PC with specific MAC address according to schedule (let's say everyday between 18:00-21:00) is this possible to setup with IPtables? could somebody help me a bit with it? or should go and RTFM?

• HP Media Smart remote access

  I just purchased this box for home backups for my pc's and mac's. Everything works great accept for the remote access part. I can RD into the machine locally but I can't get to it from outside of my network. I've enabled port forwarding on my router but it doesn't seem to matter. I checked with Qwest and they don't block these ports so I'm at a loss. I do have Vonage in front of my router but I've taken it out and it didn't make a difference. I suspect I've made an error with my router setup. I'm a programmer and I'm playing in the world of the unknown here. I'm lost. Any suggestions?

• Using video ports 'backwards'

  If I want to connect my laptop, which has a VGA output, to a monitor, I plug a VGA cable into both ends. The output being my laptop, and the input the monitor VGA output sockets are the same as VGA input sockets however, so what if I want to use my laptop as the monitor, with the video being outputted from somewhere else? As I said, VGA's output is the same as input, so in theory, I have the hardware in my laptop to do this. But presumably I need some software. So can I use the VGA port on a laptop as a video input? (And also, can this be done with HDMI?)

  I am completely out of ideas. I have 2.5inch HDD from my old laptop, I have tried with 2 different HDD enclosures but my desktop does not recognize it. Not even showing in the disk management or BIOS. The HDD works fine if I use in a 3.5 inch enclosure with external power. I have tried 3 different Y USB cables. I have also got a 7 port self powered 2A USB hub. I have updated my chipset drivers as well. The problem is with my desktop , the enclosures work fine with my new laptop. • How to connect with MySQL server if it won't connect via the socket?

  I have an account on a shared server. I have jailshell access and also PhpMyAdmin. I want to run mysql commands via SSH but I'm getting an error: $ mysql -u mySqlUser -p mySqlPw Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' I can connect with PHP and phpMyAdmin, so would it be possible to call mysql from the shell and have it connect via an ip and port instead of the socket? The file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock does not exist - maybe that is intentional, and the only thing in /etc/my.cnf is [mysqld] skip-innodb More Info I don't have access to change system settings. I did a search in /var for mysql.sock but found nothing. However, phpMyAdmin might be connecting via a socket somehow: Really it would just be great if I could connect via IP.   I set up multiple isolated vlans in dd-wrt. Now I need to forward a port to vlan2. I isolated the vlans using: iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o vlan2 -j DROP iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o vlan3 -j DROP iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o vlan4 -j DROP Now I need to block a clients on each vlan from accessing the router. This doesn't work: iptables -I INPUT -i br0 -o vlan2 --dport telnet -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset I'm new it iptables... am I missing something?

• Trouble opening my router to my web server

  Here's the story. I have a webs server created and connected to my router. The website works great when I'm connected to the router, but when I'm off the network I can't access the website. I got the IP for my router by googling "what is my ip." I have opened ports 80 to 10080 to link to the server in the router. One odd thing that I don't understand. When I am in network if I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:80 I can access the web page no problem. If I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:81 (or any other port) I get the error "Cannot access server." Any idea what the problem could be? Could it be my ISP?

• Chrome - Why am I automatically authenticated to a web app even after clearing browser cookies?

  I am accessing a web application using Chrome. If I sign out of the app and clear all Chrome history/cookies/etc (even Flash cookies which are now handled by Chrome in the same Clear History area) and then re-access the site, I am automatically logged in without being prompted for credentials. I then launched Chrome in Incognito mode and was able to reproduce the same behavior. However, the I was prompted upon the first logon while in Incognito mode. The web application behaves as expected in Internet Explorer 10. Some info about the application: It's a Sharepoint site using NTLM authentication The credentials are Active Directory-based, as the username is domain\username My connection is over the Internet and there is no AD relationship between my local Windows account, my Windows PC. In other words I (meaning my locally logged on user and my PC) are not in any way part of their AD domain. The site is running SSL on port 443 Why might Chrome be automatically authenticating me?

I then ran the command lsusb which yielded the screenshot below. • How to allow an internal server accept remote connections not through RD Gateway

  So, I help administrate a collection of servers running various windows server environments. We have a RD Gateway server, properly configured, to gatekeep for us. It does not have the other servers listed in it's server farm category, though. I just added a refurbished server for a non-profit development environment that is sharing the rack space and port. I would like this server to be accessible via remote connection, but not require RD gateway certification (I cannot add the users for this development server to our gateway since they do not work for the organization hosting the rack.) Is there any way for me to add this dev. server as an exception to which servers should require RD Gateway clearance, or otherwise let users bypass RD gateway credentials for this one machine? Thanks, and let me know if I am misinformed on how RD gateway works or anything. I am still learning.

  I've got a dedicated server running Debian 6. I've set up a windows 7 virtual machine using KVM. Now I'm trying to get Remote desktop working. I'm guessing i have to do some port forwarding. The virtual machine is in a NAT. Remote desktop is already set up on it (another virtual machine can connect). I've tried using the iptables and countless of virsh commands of which I'm not even sure what they did. Anyone knows how to get this working?

  I have some VHSs and vinyl records which I'd like to convert to DVDs and CDs, respectively. I have a couple of questions about how to hook the devices up to the computer. I've seen some RCA-to-USB cables on the Internet like this one. Will those work for connecting the VCR to the computer? And what program would I use to take that and save it as a video file? Can I connect the phonograph directly to the Line In port in my PC or do I need some amplifier or something in the middle? I'm using Windows 7 x64, if it matters.

• Keyboard doesn't work after Windows resume from sleep (S3) -- how to fix?

  I have a weird issue with my keyboard after resuming from S3 sleep: I can type perfectly for maybe 5 seconds, but afterwards the keyboard ceases to work until I hibernate or restart (or sleep again -- see below.) The rest of my system runs just fine -- just the keyboard apparently "freezes" up. Some closer observations: The keyboard will work for 5 seconds (and freeze again) every time I resume from sleep, even if it was frozen from a previous sleep The caps lock light will work fine within the 5 seconds. But after the keyboard "freezes", the light will remain on, but I'll be unable to turn it off. Perhaps this means power wasn't cut off from the keyboard, but it's just some software freezing up the port??? Given this info, would this indicate a problem with Windows itself? Drivers, maybe? Can I rule out the BIOS as the culprit? Finally, any ideas on how to fix? Thanks! Specs: Windows 7 x64 HP tx1000 laptop
