Unable to Create System DSN

Environment: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System Problem: (ODBC Data Source Administrator) Opening Administrative Tools - Data Sources (ODBC) - Click "System DSN" tab. Error: ODBC System DSN Warning You are logged on with non-Administrative privileges. System DSNs could not be created or modified. Failed Troubleshooting so far: Enabled local Administrator account logged in under this account. Navigated to C:\Windows\System32\ right clicked odbcad32.exe Run as Administrator Notes: I am an Administrator on this machine. The 32-bit version runs fine if I open C:\Windows\SysWoW64\odbcad32.exe However, I need the data source to be 64-bit. I am not experiencing this problem on any of my other 64-bit machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Project Navigation and File Nesting in ASP.NET MVC Projects

More and more I’m finding myself getting lost in the files in some of my larger Web projects. There’s so much freaking content to deal with – HTML Views, several derived CSS pages, page level CSS, script libraries, application wide scripts and page specific script files etc. etc. Thankfully I use Resharper and the Ctrl-T Go to Anything which autocompletes you to any file, type, member rapidly. Awesome except when I forget – or when I’m not quite sure of the name of what I’m looking for. Project navigation is still important. Sometimes while working on a project I seem to have 30 or more files open and trying to locate another new file to open in the solution often ends up being a mental exercise – “where did I put that thing?” It’s those little hesitations that tend to get in the way of workflow frequently. To make things worse most NuGet packages for client side frameworks and scripts, dump stuff into folders that I generally don’t use. I’ve never been a fan of the ‘Content’ folder in MVC which is just an empty layer that doesn’t serve much of a purpose. It’s usually the first thing I nuke in every MVC project. To me the project root is where the actual content for a site goes – is there really a need to add another folder to force another path into every resource you use? It’s ugly and also inefficient as it adds additional bytes to every resource link you embed into a page. Alternatives I’ve been playing around with different folder layouts recently and found that moving my cheese around has actually made project navigation much easier. In this post I show a couple of things I’ve found useful and maybe you find some of these useful as well or at least get some ideas what can be changed to provide better project flow. The first thing I’ve been doing is add a root Code folder and putting all server code into that. I’m a big fan of treating the Web project root folder as my Web root folder so all content comes from the root without unneeded nesting like the Content folder. By moving all server code out of the root tree (except for Code) the root tree becomes a lot cleaner immediately as you remove Controllers, App_Start, Models etc. and move them underneath Code. Yes this adds another folder level for server code, but it leaves only code related things in one place that’s easier to jump back and forth in. Additionally I find myself doing a lot less with server side code these days, more with client side code so I want the server code separated from that. The root folder itself then serves as the root content folder. Specifically I have the Views folder below it, as well as the Css and Scripts folders which serve to hold only common libraries and global CSS and Scripts code. These days of building SPA style application, I also tend to have an App folder there where I keep my application specific JavaScript files, as well as HTML View templates for client SPA apps like Angular. Here’s an example of what this looks like in a relatively small project: The goal is to keep things that are related together, so I don’t end up jumping around so much in the solution to get to specific project items. The Code folder may irk some of you and hark back to the days of the App_Code folder in non Web-Application projects, but these days I find myself messing with a lot less server side code and much more with client side files – HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Generally I work on a single controller at a time – once that’s open it’s open that’s typically the only server code I work with regularily. Business logic lives in another project altogether, so other than the controller and maybe ViewModels there’s not a lot of code being accessed in the Code folder. So throwing that off the root and isolating seems like an easy win. Nesting Page specific content In a lot of my existing applications that are pure server side MVC application perhaps with some JavaScript associated with them , I tend to have page level javascript and css files. For these types of pages I actually prefer the local files stored in the same folder as the parent view. So typically I have a .css and .js files with the same name as the view in the same folder. This looks something like this: In order for this to work you have to also make a configuration change inside of the /Views/web.config file, as the Views folder is blocked with the BlockViewHandler that prohibits access to content from that folder. It’s easy to fix by changing the path from * to *.cshtml or *.vbhtml so that view retrieval is blocked:<system.webServer> <handlers> <remove name="BlockViewHandler"/> <add name="BlockViewHandler" path="*.cshtml" verb="*" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.HttpNotFoundHandler" /> </handlers> </system.webServer> With this in place, from inside of your Views you can then reference those same resources like this:<link href="~/Views/Admin/QuizPrognosisItems.css" rel="stylesheet" /> and<script src="~/Views/Admin/QuizPrognosisItems.js"></script> which works fine. JavaScript and CSS files in the Views folder deploy just like the .cshtml files do and can be referenced from this folder as well. Making this happen is not really as straightforward as it should be with just Visual Studio unfortunately, as there’s no easy way to get the file nesting from the VS IDE directly (you have to modify the .csproj file). However, Mads Kristensen has a nice Visual Studio Add-in that provides file nesting via a short cut menu option. Using this you can select each of the ‘child’ files and then nest them under a parent file. In the case above I select the .js and .css files and nest them underneath the .cshtml view. I was even toying with the idea of throwing the controller.cs files into the Views folder, but that’s maybe going a little too far :-) It would work however as Visual Studio doesn’t publish .cs files and the compiler doesn’t care where the files live. There are lots of options and if you think that would make life easier it’s another option to help group related things together. Are there any downside to this? Possibly – if you’re using automated minification/packaging tools like ASP.NET Bundling or Grunt/Gulp with Uglify, it becomes a little harder to group script and css files for minification as you may end up looking in multiple folders instead of a single folder. But – again that’s a one time configuration step that’s easily handled and much less intrusive then constantly having to search for files in your project. Client Side Folders The particular project shown above in the screen shots above is a traditional server side ASP.NET MVC application with most content rendered into server side Razor pages. There’s a fair amount of client side stuff happening on these pages as well – specifically several of these pages are self contained single page Angular applications that deal with 1 or maybe 2 separate views and the layout I’ve shown above really focuses on the server side aspect where there are Razor views with related script and css resources. For applications that are more client centric and have a lot more script and HTML template based content I tend to use the same layout for the server components, but the client side code can often be broken out differently. In SPA type applications I tend to follow the App folder approach where all the application pieces that make the SPA applications end up below the App folder. Here’s what that looks like for me – here this is an AngularJs project: In this case the App folder holds both the application specific js files, and the partial HTML views that get loaded into this single SPA page application. In this particular Angular SPA application that has controllers linked to particular partial views, I prefer to keep the script files that are associated with the views – Angular Js Controllers in this case – with the actual partials. Again I like the proximity of the view with the main code associated with the view, because 90% of the UI application code that gets written is handled between these two files. This approach works well, but only if controllers are fairly closely aligned with the partials. If you have many smaller sub-controllers or lots of directives where the alignment between views and code is more segmented this approach starts falling apart and you’ll probably be better off with separate folders in js folder. Following Angular conventions you’d have controllers/directives/services etc. folders. Please note that I’m not saying any of these ways are right or wrong – this is just what has worked for me and why! Skipping Project Navigation altogether with Resharper I’ve talked a bit about project navigation in the project tree, which is a common way to navigate and which we all use at least some of the time, but if you use a tool like Resharper – which has Ctrl-T to jump to anything, you can quickly navigate with a shortcut key and autocomplete search. Here’s what Resharper’s jump to anything looks like: Resharper’s Goto Anything box lets you type and quick search over files, classes and members of the entire solution which is a very fast and powerful way to find what you’re looking for in your project, by passing the solution explorer altogether. As long as you remember to use (which I sometimes don’t) and you know what you’re looking for it’s by far the quickest way to find things in a project. It’s a shame that this sort of a simple search interface isn’t part of the native Visual Studio IDE. Work how you like to work Ultimately it all comes down to workflow and how you like to work, and what makes *you* more productive. Following pre-defined patterns is great for consistency, as long as they don’t get in the way you work. A lot of the default folder structures in Visual Studio for ASP.NET MVC were defined when things were done differently. These days we’re dealing with a lot more diverse project content than when ASP.NET MVC was originally introduced and project organization definitely is something that can get in the way if it doesn’t fit your workflow. So take a look and see what works well and what might benefit from organizing files differently. As so many things with ASP.NET, as things evolve and tend to get more complex I’ve found that I end up fighting some of the conventions. The good news is that you don’t have to follow the conventions and you have the freedom to do just about anything that works for you. Even though what I’ve shown here diverges from conventions, I don’t think anybody would stumble over these relatively minor changes and not immediately figure out where things live, even in larger projects. But nevertheless think long and hard before breaking those conventions – if there isn’t a good reason to break them or the changes don’t provide improved workflow then it’s not worth it. Break the rules, but only if there’s a quantifiable benefit. Restful Services, oData, and Rest Sharp

After a great presentation by Jason Sheehan at MDC about RestSharp, I decided to implement it. RestSharp is a .Net framework for consuming restful data sources via either Json or XML. My first step was to put together a Restful data source for RestSharp to consume. Staying entirely withing .Net, I decided to use Microsoft's oData implementation, built on System.Data.Services.DataServices. Natively, these support Json, or atom+pub xml. (XML with a few bells and whistles added on) There are three main steps for creating an oData data source: 1) override CreateDSPMetaData This is where the metadata data is returned. The meta data defines the structure of the data to return. The structure contains the relationships between data objects, along with what properties the objects expose. The meta data can and should be somehow cached so that the structure is not rebuild with every data request. 2) override CreateDataSource The context contains the data the data source will publish. The disadvantage is there are now tags strewn about your business layer that need to be updated as the business rules change. 3) Programmatically construct metadata object. This is the object illustrated above in CreateDSPMetaData. This puts all relationship information into one central programmatic location. Here business rules are constructed when the DSPMetaData response object is returned. Once you have your service up and running, RestSharp is designed for XML / Json, along with the native Microsoft library. There are currently some differences between how Jason made RestSharp expect XML with how atom+pub works, so I found better results currently with the Json implementation - modifying the RestSharp XML parser to make an atom+pub parser is fairly trivial though, so use what implementation works best for you. I put together a sample console app which calls the RestSvcImpl.svc service defined above (and assumes it to be running on port 2000). Not Playing Nice Together

One of the things I’ve noticed is that two industry trends are not playing nice together, those trends being multi-core CPUs and massive hard drives. It’s not a problem if you keep your cores busy with compute intensive work, but for software developers the beauty of multi-core CPUs (along with gobs of RAM and a 64 bit OS) is virtualization. But when you have only one hard drive (who needs another when it holds 2 TB of data?) you wind up with a serious hard drive bottleneck. A solid state drive would definitely help, and might even be a complete solution, but the cost is ridiculous. Two TB of solid state storage will set you back around $7,000! A spinning 2 TB drive is only $150. I see a couple of solutions for this. One is the mainframe concept of near and far storage: put the stuff that will be heavily access on a solid state drive and the rest on a spinning drive. Another solution is multiple spinning drives. Instead of a single 2 TB drive, get four 500 GB drives. In total, the four 500 GB drives will cost about $100 more than the single 2 TB drive. You’ll need to be smart about what drive you place things on so that the load is spread evenly. Another option, for better performance, would be four 10,000 RPM 300 GB drives, but that would cost about $800 more than the singe 2 TB drive and would deliver only 1.2 TB of space. I am trying to setup a single server to send out email from a single domain but I'm having trouble identifying the correct values for these Postfix settings. mydomain = example.com myhostname = example.com myorigin = $mydomain mydestination = $example, localhost.$example, localhost relayhost = mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 mailbox_size_limit = 0 recipient_delimiter = + inet_interfaces = all Can someone can explain them so I know what I should be setting them to? Things like $mydomain appear to be added at runtime by the script. This seems to work (emails come from [email protected]) but I am weary of using values for parameters I don't understand.

Safari Mobile Multi-Line <Select> aka GWT Multi-Line ListBox

Hi guys. Working on a webapp here that must run on the iPad (so, Safari Mobile). I have this code that works fine in just about anything except iPad: <select class="gwt-ListBox" size="12" multiple="multiple"> <option value="Bleeding Eyelashes">Bleeding Eyelashes</option> <option value="Smelly Pupils">Smelly Pupils</option> <option value="Bushy Eyebrows">Bushy Eyebrows</option> <option value="Green Vessels">Green Vessels</option> <option value="Sucky Noses">Sucky Noses</option> </select> What it's supposed to look like is a box with 12 lines ans 5 of them filled up. It works fine in FF, IE, Chrome, Safari Win. But, when I open it on iPad, it's just a single line! Styling it with CSS doesn't work. It just makes the single line bigger if I set the height. Is there a way to make it behave the same way as in normal browsers, or do I nave to make a custom component? Thanks.

Newbie, deciding Python or Erlang

Hi Guys, I'm a Administrator (unix, Linux and some windows apps such as Exchange) by experience and have never worked on any programming language besides C# and scripting on Bash and lately on powershell. I'm starting out as a service provider and using multiple network/server monitoring tools based on open source (nagios, opennms etc) in order to monitor them. At this moment, being inspired by a design that I came up with, to do more than what is available with the open source at this time, I would like to start programming and test some of these ideas. The requirement is that a server software that captures a stream of data and store them in a database(CouchDB or MongoDB preferably) and the client side (agent installed on a server) would be sending this stream of data on a schedule of every 10 minutes or so. For these two core ideas, I have been reading about Python and Erlang besides ruby. I do plan to use either Amazon or Rackspace where the server platform would run. This gives me the scalability needed when we have more customers with many servers. For that reason alone, I thought Erlang was a better fit(I could be totally wrong, new to this game) and I understand that Erlang has limited support in some ways compared to Ruby or Python. But also I'm totally new to the programming realm of things and any advise would be appreciated grately. Jo

Metro apps crash on startup, driver or permissions issue?

After installing Win8 x64 RC, Metro apps worked correctly, but desktop OpenGL apps were slow and unresponsive. I installed the latest Win8 nVidia drivers, and the OpenGL apps started working correctly. At the same time, because of annoying permission messages, I changed the C:\ drive and all its files ownerships to my user, and gave it full permission. I restarted my pc after installing the drivers, and now Metro apps only show the splash screen, then crash. I tried installing other versions of the nVidia drivers, with the same result. My GPU is a GeForce GTX275. Is this a known problem with nVidia drivers? Or maybe changing the ownership of C:\ is the real problem? Thank you. More information (after looking in the event viewer) I've managed to find the problem and the error in the Event Viewer. I still cannot solve it. Setting write permissions for folders while creating a package with MSDeploy

I'm using MSDeploy to create an artefact as a build step in NAnt. This particular build step is called on successful compilation. The artefact is then used to for deployment. I want to be able to set specify write access to a couple of folders in the package that is created. Is this possible? I know that there is a setAcl provider for this specific purpose, but can this be used while creating a package?

Is there any (possibly free or open-source) virtual WDM audio driver for Windows, with additional processing plugins, which would add one more layer between windows applications and actual sound card's WDM audio driver, allowing to: Add software DSPs to general audio output. I would like to be able to use custom effects, like compressor, or stereophonic-to-binaural converter for listening online's streaming media on headphones, etc. Connect its output to some custom buffer instead of the sound card. For example, to be able to record audio, or to send audio via wireless connection to some other wireless source? Virtual audio driver was just my idea how to solve these issues - if you know other way, please share your knowledge. I need this for Windows 7 and/or Windows XP.

Overriding destination directory from ROBOCOPY Job file?

I am using Robocopy for backing up my project directories to an external disk, and it works like a charm. Except for one little issue: sometimes, I wish I could override the destination directory which I specify in my Robocopy Job file (myproject.rcj) to send the files somewhere else. So if I have this in my myprojects.rcj: :: Robocopy Job MYPROJECT.RCJ :: Source Directory : /SD:d:\MyProject :: Source Directory. :: Destination Directory : /DD:f:\MyDefaultDestination :: Destination Directory. is there any way I can instruct Robocopy to use a different destination when executing it using a job? So I execute Robocopy like this: robocopy /job:myproject.rcj and I wish I could override the default destination directory by using: robocopy /job:myproject.rcj /DD:X:\OtherDestination but that doesn't seem to work..... ERROR : Invalid Parameter #2 : "/DD:X:\OtherDestination" Any ideas??

Online scoreboard in Python?

So my friend and I are working on an arcade-style game in Python and Pygame. We're beginning to look at the feasibility of an online leaderboard, given our current programming backgrounds. Such a leaderboard would have the following requirements/features; The ability to search through demographics like region, country, platform, game mode, recentness ("best scores this month") and difficulty. (e.g. to make it possible for someone to say "I'm the best player in Italy!" or "I'm the best Linux player in South America!") Our game will not have online multiplayer, so no need to worry about that. We don't expect the game to be a million-dollar hit. We want the scores to be accessible both from in-game and the website. We would like some semblance of security to make sure no one plugs fake scores into the system. This is our present situation; Neither I nor my friend have any network programming background. All I really know is that sockets are low-level, HTTP is high-level. I happen to know that the Google App Engine might be useful for something like this, and I'm really thinking about going with that. We're not sure how we would store all the high score data. Our game will be free and open source (though we might keep the components that submit the high scores closed-source). Aside from all of this, we don't really have any idea where to begin. Any thoughts?

My Optimized Adam & Eve

Today I had a few minutes in the evening to go over my original Adam and Eve code… what I wanted to see tonight was if I could optimize the code any further… which I was pretty sure could be done. Ultimately what I wanted to find from the experiment was a balance between optimized code an reusable code. On the one hand I can put everything into a single function and end up with a totally unusable function that is extremely compressed, which would have big comebacks when making modifications at a later stage. Alternatively I could have many single line functions that are extremely loosely coupled but sparsely spaced and so would almost be to fragmented to grok. Ultimately I found with my current iteration something that I consider readable, yet compressed. I am using php-fpm. I recently recompiled php for including imap functions. tmux combine multiple commands to one vi-copy command or tmux command to yank a line

In tmux, i know we can chain multiple commands to a key by using \; See Here But in vi mode, i want one single key press to go to the beginning of the current line, begin-selection, go to end-of-line, copy-selection. In tmux.conf if i give the following bind-key -t vi-copy 's' start-of-line \; begin-selection \; end-of-line \; copy-selection \; It gives me this : 69: usage: bind-key [-cnr] [-t key-table] key command [arguments] error. Or is there any alternative way to yank the current line in single key.

How to log the actual output in apache?

I am doing LAMP development for a mobile platform. However, the client browser does not allow me to view the source code of visited pages. I consider the source code to be of huge importance for debugging, so I would like to configure my web server so every time a user makes a request, in addition to sending the client a response, that response (the actual contents of the returned page) is also stored in a file with a filename I can cross-relate with access_log (maybe ip-timestamp-filename? or maybe a unique ID in an additional column in access_log?). I've searched quite a bit, but haven't even gotten close to finding what I'm looking for. Has anybody been able to do this?

I have downloaded .Net framework 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012 since it was released to MSDN subscribers on the 15th of August.For people that do not know about that yet please have a look at Jason Zander's excellent blog post .Since then I have been investigating the many new features that have been introduced in this release.In this post I will be looking into new features available in ASP.Net 4.5 and VS 2012.In order to follow along this post you must have Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 installed in your machine.Download and install VS 2012 using this link.My machine runs on Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 works just fine. Please find all my posts regarding VS 2012, here .Well I have not exactly kept my promise for writing short blog posts, so I will try to keep this one short. 1) Launch VS 2012 and create a new Web Forms application by going to File - >New Web Site - > ASP.Net Web Forms Site.2) Choose an appropriate name for your web site.3) Build and run your site (CTRL+F5). Then go to View - > Source to see the HTML markup (Javascript e.t.c) that is rendered through the browser.You will see that the ASP.Net team has done a good job to make the markup cleaner and more readable. The ViewState size is significantly smaller compared to its size to earlier versions.Have a look at the picture below 4) Another thing that you must notice is that the new template makes good use of HTML 5 elements.When you view the application through the browser and then go to View Page Source you will see HTML 5 elements like nav,header,section.Have a look at the picture below 5) In VS 2012 we can browse with multiple browsers. There is a very handy dropdown that shows all the browsers available for viewing the website.Have a look at the picture below When I select the option Browse With... I see another window and I can select any of the installed browsers I want and also set the default browser.
