However, these applications are typically expensive or unreliable.  Plus, if you have a laptop or lack a secondary computer to put the hard drive into – how on earth do you wipe it quickly and easily while still conforming to a 7 pass rule (this means that every possible bit on the hard drive is set to 0 and then to 1 seven times in a row)?  Yes, one pass should be enough – as turning every bit from a 1 to a zero will wipe the data from existence.  But, we’re dealing with tinfoil hat wearing types here people.  DOD standards dictate at least 3 passes, and typically 7 is the preferred amount.  I’m not going to argue about data recovery.  I have been told to use 7 passes, and so I will.  So say we all! Quite some time ago I used to make a BartPE XP-based boot cd for the original purpose of securely wiping data.  I loved BartPE and integrated so many plugins into my builds that I could do pretty much anything directly from CD.  Reset passwords, uninstall security updates, wipe drives, chkdsk, remove spyware, install Windows, etc.  However, with the newer multi-core systems and new chipsets coming out from vendors, I found that BartPE was rather difficult to keep up to date.  I have since switched to WinPE 3.0 (Windows Preinstallation Environment). http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748933(WS.10).aspx  It is fairly simple to create your own CD, and I have made a few helpful scripts to easily integrate drivers and rebuild the ISO file for you.  I’ll cover making your own boot CD utilizing WinPE 3.0 in a later post – I can talk about WinPE forever and need to collect my thoughts!!  My wife loves talking about WinPE almost as much as talking about Doctor Who.  Wait, did I say loves?  Hmmmm, I may have meant loathes. The topic at hand?  Right. Wiping a drive! I must have drunk too much coffee this morning.  I like to use a simple batch script that calls a combination of diskpart.exe from Microsoft® and Sdelete.exe created by our friend Mark Russinovich. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897443.aspx All of the following files are located within the same directory on my WinPE boot CD. Here are the contents of wipe_me.bat, script.txt and sdelete.reg. Wipe_me.bat:   @echo off echo. echo     I will completely wipe the local hard drives using echo     7 individual wipes. The data will NOT echo     be recoverable.  I will begin after you pause echo. echo Preparing to partition and format disk. Diskpart.exe /s "script.txt" REM I was annoyed by not having a completely automated script – and Sdelete wants you to accept the license agreement. So, I added a registry file to skip doing that. regedit /S sdelete.reg rem sdelete options selected are: -p (passes) -c (zero free space) -s (recurse through subdirectories, if any) -z (clean free space) [drive letter] sdelete.exe -p 7 -c -s -z c: echo. echo Pass seven complete. echo. echo Wiping complete. Pause exit script.txt: list disk select disk 0 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format FS=NTFS LABEL="New Volume" QUICK assign letter=c exit *Notes: This script assumes one local hard drive – change the script as you see fit for your environment.  The clean command will overwrite the master boot record and any hidden sector information – so be careful!   sdelete.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sysinternals\SDelete] "EulaAccepted"=dword:00000001   With a combination of WinPE, sdelete.exe and your friendly neighborhood text editor you can begin wiping drives as quickly and easily as possible!  I hope this helps, I get asked this a lot in my line of work. • DriveImage XML fails with a Windows Volume Shadow Service Error

  I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?

  I've installed freeSSHd on a Windows Server 2008 box (following the instructions in How to install an SSH Server in Windows Server 2008), including: created a user named "dspitzer" with NTLM authorization opened an exception for port 22 in the Windows Firewall But when I try to connect (from a Mac OS X 10.5.8 command-line), I get permission denied after entering the password: $ ssh 12.34.56.78 [email protected]'s password: Permission denied, please try again. [email protected]'s password: Permission denied, please try again. [email protected]'s password: Received disconnect from 12.34.56.78: 2: Too many attempts. I've also tried: $ ssh [email protected] [email protected]'s password: Permission denied, please try again. [email protected]'s password: Permission denied, please try again. [email protected]'s password: Received disconnect from 12.34.56.78: 2: Too many attempts. I've also tried changing the authorization to "Password stored as SHA1 hash" and entering a simple password, but I get the same problem. And I've tried a different user name ("Administrator") with no luck. I've confirmed that I am connecting to the server I'm configuring—if I stop freeSSHd and try to connect I get: $ ssh 12.34.56.78 ssh: connect to host 12.34.56.78 port 22: Operation timed out I get the exact same results from a Linux command-line. Any advice or troubleshooting tips? Update: I tried disabling the firewall (in response to geeklin's comment) and it made no difference. Update #2: I no longer have this machine (I've changed employers), so I have no way of verifying the answers. I guess all I can do is make this question "community wiki".

• Can't successfully run Sharepoint Foundation 2010 first time configuration

  I'm trying to run the non-GUI version of configuration wizard using power shell because I would like to set config and admin database names. GUI wizard doesn't give you all possible options for configuration. I've broken them down into separate lines to make it easier to read. I'm running: Windows 7 x64 on the machine where Sharepoint Foundation 2010 should be installed and also has preinstalled SQL Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core is my domain controller I've installed Sharepoint according to MS guides http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869%28office.14%29.aspx installing all additional patches that are related to my configuration. Any ideas what should I do to make it work?

• Failed Backup Job With Backup Exec 12 and AOFO

  I am backing up a Windows 2003 Small Business Server with SP2. We are running Backup Exec 12 with SP4. Recently the backup job started failing on backing up the system state with the following error: V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "System?State". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot provider error (0xE000FE7D): Access is denied. To back up or restore System State, administrator privileges are required. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details. Upon review of Symantec's website the error indicates a credential problem. However when I test the credentials they come back with no failures. I have found another forum here referencing a similar error and have tried what has been indicated with no succesful results. I have created new jobs based on new selection lists with no succesful results. I suspect a new update possibly from Microsoft may be causing this but I have no idea which one. I am looking for feedback. Thanks.

• Internet Explorer 8 crashes on Citrix, Windows 2003

  Difficult to decide where this Q fits best. It's server-related and programming-related. But it's a user-problem so I'll put it here, first... I work on a (Delphi) application that uses an Internet Explorer component to show information to the user. It's not a web application, just a desktop application which creates HTML pages to display them within a browser component. Some of the information on these webpages are retrieved from a web server, while other information is provided "live" by the application itself. It works quite well, but it adds an IE-process (child process) next to my application. And this IE process seems to eat a lot of system resources. For normal users, this is not a real problem, so it's not an issue that I want to fix in the code. But one customer of this application uses it with about 100 users on a Citrix/Windows 2003 environment and they complain about problems with the application. IE8 tends to crash, not show, hang or cause other mayhap. Then again, I've warned them that -officially- I won't support any Citrix environment. But I'm willing to help them to find a solution to fix this, and if need be I could make minor changes to my code to help fix this issie. (If possible.) But basically, I need a solution that any user/administrator on this Citrix environment can follow/use. Any ideas on how to resolve this resource problem?

  Hello, I am trying to get the size of a user's local profile using VBScript. I know the directory of the profile (typically "C:\Users\blah"). UPDATE: I did some deeper digging and it turns out that the Permission Denied error occurs if permission is denied to some subfolders or files of the directory whose size I wish to get. In the case of user profiles, there's always a few system files that even the Administrator group does not have permission to access. To get around this, I wrote a function that tries to get the folder size the normal way (above), then, if the error occurs, it recurses into the subdirectories of the folder, ignoring folder sizes that are permission denied (but not the rest of the folders). • Why does my PowerShell script hang when called in PSEXEC via a batch (.cmd) file?

  I'm trying to remotely execute a PowerShell script using PSEXEC. The PowerShell script is called via a .cmd batch file. The reason we do this is to change the execution policy, run the powershell script then reset the execution policy again: On the remote server do-tasks.cmd looks like: powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy unrestricted}" powershell DoTasks.ps1 powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy restricted}" The PowerShell script DoTasks.ps1 just does this for now: Write-Output "Hello World!" Both of these scripts live in c:\windows\system32 (for now) just so they're on the PATH. On the originating server I do this: psexec \\web1928 -u administrator -p "adminpassword" do-tasks.cmd When this runs I get the following response at the command line: c:\Windows\system32>powershell -command "&{ set-executionpolicy unrestricted}" and the script runs no further. I can't ctrl-c to break the script and I just see ^C characters, I can type input from the keyboard and the characters are echoed to console. On the remote server I see that PowerShell.exe and CMD.exe are running in Task Manager's Process tab. If I end these processes then control returns to the command line on the originating server. I have tried this with just a simple .cmd batch file with a @echo hello world and it works just fine. Running do-tasks.cmd on the remote server via an RDP session works ok as well. Why is my remote batch file getting stuck when executing via PSEXEC?

• Cisco: Site-to-site VPN with cisco 878 and ASA weirdness

  I currently have 2 sites, both connected to each other through 2 firewalls / routers in a site-to-site VPN. Pinging from server to server (Using 2mb/2mb SDSL) through that VPN obviously works, however, at one site, we have another internet connection (7m/400k ADSL), and only the link between the two sites should be on the other connection. All pc's should go over the other connection for internet, just communication between servers & Communication between pc's and the server at the other side should go through there too. What is configured at the moment is the server is using the SDSL directly as default gateway. Since it's not intended to surf anything it is a safe config. PC's are configured on the ADSL as default gateway. Now I wanted to route through everything that uses the range used on the other site, it should be sent from the ADSL modem to the SDSL modem, which has the VPN connection. I figured I could use OSPF to do so, however, OSPF doesn't seem to "detect" the range of the external site. Also (due to bad ip subnetting thanks to the other administrator), the ip used internally as the server on the other site also exists on the internet (causing a lot of confusion), so rdp-ing from our server to the server of the other site works (somehow), but tracerouting on the SDSL router (which should actually, in my opinion, go over the VPN) actually goes all over the internet. My question(s): Why doesn't the SDSL router ping the external ip through VPN, but the server does? Why can't I route from the ADSL router to the SDSL over VPN? I would seriously appreciate some help, since I can't figure out why it does it like this.

• Moving from ColdFusion 8 to ColdFusion 10 - Migration Fails

  After having made several attempts to migrate from a ColdFusion 8 Standard server to a ColdFusion 10 Standard server, it feels like I am "almost" there. I'm using the 64 bit installer from Adobe's website. I'm using a Windows Server 2008 (64 bit) server with IIS 7.0. The installation itself goes smooth and the services start and are running. But at the end of the installation it says "ColdFusion Installed, but with errors" and it generates a log file. The log file reads: Migration Error: : Check that "C:\ColdFusion8" is a valid directory and is an installation of either ColdFusion MX 6 or ColdFusionMX 7 and further down says: Status: WARNING Additional Notes: WARNING - Could not migrate settings from previous version of ColdFusion Custom Action: com.macromedia.ia.action.MigrateColdFusionAction Status: ERROR Additional Notes: ERROR - class com.macromedia.ia.action.MigrateColdFusionAction NonfatalInstallException null The applicationHost.config file has new XML referencing the ColdFusion 10 directory, but IIS is still using ColdFusion 8. I'm also going to guess that the settings in the CF Administrator have not been migrated based on the message in the log above. I've followed the instructions on Adobe's site, including ensuring that ASP.NET, CGI, ISAPI Extensions, and ISAPI Filters are all enabled. I've also enabled IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility even though I don't think it's needed. Has anyone else had similar issues with ColdFusion 10 and IIS 7. Currently I have uninstalled CF 10 and reverted back to

• Outlook unable to synchronize SharePoint library - error 0x80004005

  We have one large library (~10 GB) on SharePoint that cannot be synchronized with Outlook, even if you only attempt to synch one of the smaller sub folders in the library. Other libraries (or other library sub folders) work fine with Outlook. This is with MOSS 2007 SP1 and Outlook 2007 SP2. The error is: Task 'SharePoint' reported error (0x80004005): 'An error occurred either in Outlook or SharePoint. Contact the SharePoint site administrator.' Reproducing the error Open up the large SharePoint document library in Internet Explorer From the Actions menu, select Connect to Outlook Select Allow on the stssync: security warning that pops up Outlook automatically tries an initial sync and sync status immediately shows the above error. Update 1: I verified the same issue occurs on Windows XP SP3 with IE 6 using Outlook 2007 SP2 and the same SharePoint library (it was originally tested on Windows 7). The issue is definitely related to the library or Outlook. Update 2: Using stsadm I exported the site with this large document library (8.6 GB 15,000 items) and imported it on to a development system. The result is the same on the development system - multiple clients are unable to connect Outlook to the library and get the 0x80004005 error above.

• Installing Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1

  As has become customary when the product team releases a new patch, SP or version I like to document the install. Although I had no errors on my main computer, my netbook did have problems. Although I am not ready to call it a Service Pack problem just yet! Update 2011-03-10 – Running the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 install a second time worked As per Brian's post I am installing the Team Foundation Server Service Pack first and indeed as this is a single server local deployment I need to install both. If I only install one it will leave the other product broken. This however does not affect you if you are running Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server on separate computers as is normal in a production deployment. Main workhorse I will be installing the service pack first on my main computer as I want to actually use it here. Figure: My main workhorse I will also be installing this on my netbook which is obviously of significantly lower spec, but I will do that one after. Although, as always I had my fingers crossed, I was not really worried. Figure: KB2182621 Compared to Visual Studio there are not really a lot of components to update. Figure: TFS 2010 and SQL 2008 are the main things to update There is no “web” installer for the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack, but that is ok as most people will be installing it on a production server and will want to have everything local. I would have liked a Web installer, but the added complexity for the product team is not work the capability for a 500mb patch. Figure: There is currently no way to roll SP1 and RTM together Figure: No problems with the file verification, phew Figure: Although the install took a while, it progressed smoothly   Figure: I always like a success screen Well, as far as the install is concerned everything is OK, but what about TFS? Can I still connect and can I still administer it. Figure: Service Pack 1 is reflected correctly in the Administration Console I am confident that there are no major problems with TFS on my system and that it has been updated to SP1. I can do all of the things that I used before with ease, and with the new features detailed by Brian I think I will be happy. Netbook The great god Murphy has stuck, and my poor wee laptop spat the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 out so fast it hit me on the back of the head. Figure: Error log for Team Foundation Server 2010 install shows a failure As there is really no information in this log as to why the installation failed so I checked the event log on that box. Figure: There are hundreds of errors and it actually looks like there are more problems than a failed Service Pack I am going to just run it again and see if it was because the netbook was slow to catch on to the update. Hears hoping, but even if it fails, I would question the installation of Windows (PDC laptop original install) before I question the Service Pack Figure: Second run through was successful I don’t know if the laptop was just slow, or what… Did you get this error? If you did I will push this to the product team as a problem, but unless more people have this sort of error, I will just look to write this off as a corrupted install of Windows and reinstall.

• Windows Phone 7 development: Using isolated storage

  In my previous posting about Windows Phone 7 development I showed how to use WebBrowser control in Windows Phone 7. In this posting I make some other improvements to my blog reader application and I will show you how to use isolated storage to store information to phone. Why isolated storage? Isolated storage is place where your application can save its data and settings. The image on right (that I stole from MSDN library) shows you how application data store is organized. You have no other options to keep your files besides isolated storage because Windows Phone 7 does not allow you to save data directly to other file system locations. From MSDN: “Isolated storage enables managed applications to create and maintain local storage. The mobile architecture is similar to the Silverlight-based applications on Windows. All I/O operations are restricted to isolated storage and do not have direct access to the underlying operating system file system. Ultimately, this helps to provide security and prevents unauthorized access and data corruption.” Saving files from web to isolated storage I updated my RSS-reader so it reads RSS from web only if there in no local file with RSS. User can update RSS-file by clicking a button. Also file is created when application starts and there is no RSS-file. Why I am doing this? I want my application to be able to work also offline. As my code needs some more refactoring I provide it with some next postings about Windows Phone 7. If you want it sooner then please leave me a comment here. As isolated storage files also base on streams we can use them everywhere where streams are expected. Reading isolated storage files As isolated storage files are opened as streams you can read them like usual files in your usual applications. The next code fragment shows you how to open file from isolated storage and how to read it using XmlReader. • 8 Things You Can Do In Android’s Developer Options

  The Developer Options menu in Android is a hidden menu with a variety of advanced options. These options are intended for developers, but many of them will be interesting to geeks. You’ll have to perform a secret handshake to enable the Developer Options menu in the Settings screen, as it’s hidden from Android users by default. Follow the simple steps to quickly enable Developer Options. Enable USB Debugging “USB debugging” sounds like an option only an Android developer would need, but it’s probably the most widely used hidden option in Android. USB debugging allows applications on your computer to interface with your Android phone over the USB connection. This is required for a variety of advanced tricks, including rooting an Android phone, unlocking it, installing a custom ROM, or even using a desktop program that captures screenshots of your Android device’s screen. You can also use ADB commands to push and pull files between your device and your computer or create and restore complete local backups of your Android device without rooting. USB debugging can be a security concern, as it gives computers you plug your device into access to your phone. You could plug your device into a malicious USB charging port, which would try to compromise you. That’s why Android forces you to agree to a prompt every time you plug your device into a new computer with USB debugging enabled. Set a Desktop Backup Password If you use the above ADB trick to create local backups of your Android device over USB, you can protect them with a password with the Set a desktop backup password option here. This password encrypts your backups to secure them, so you won’t be able to access them if you forget the password. Disable or Speed Up Animations When you move between apps and screens in Android, you’re spending some of that time looking at animations and waiting for them to go away. You can disable these animations entirely by changing the Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale options here. If you like animations but just wish they were faster, you can speed them up. On a fast phone or tablet, this can make switching between apps nearly instant. If you thought your Android phone was speedy before, just try disabling animations and you’ll be surprised how much faster it can seem. Force-Enable FXAA For OpenGL Games If you have a high-end phone or tablet with great graphics performance and you play 3D games on it, there’s a way to make those games look even better. Just go to the Developer Options screen and enable the Force 4x MSAA option. This will force Android to use 4x multisample anti-aliasing in OpenGL ES 2.0 games and other apps. This requires more graphics power and will probably drain your battery a bit faster, but it will improve image quality in some games. This is a bit like force-enabling antialiasing using the NVIDIA Control Panel on a Windows gaming PC. See How Bad Task Killers Are We’ve written before about how task killers are worse than useless on Android. If you use a task killer, you’re just slowing down your system by throwing out cached data and forcing Android to load apps from system storage whenever you open them again. Don’t believe us? Enable the Don’t keep activities option on the Developer options screen and Android will force-close every app you use as soon as you exit it. Enable this app and use your phone normally for a few minutes — you’ll see just how harmful throwing out all that cached data is and how much it will slow down your phone. Don’t actually use this option unless you want to see how bad it is! It will make your phone perform much more slowly — there’s a reason Google has hidden these options away from average users who might accidentally change them. Fake Your GPS Location The Allow mock locations option allows you to set fake GPS locations, tricking Android into thinking you’re at a location where you actually aren’t. Use this option along with an app like Fake GPS location and you can trick your Android device and the apps running on it into thinking you’re at locations where you actually aren’t. How would this be useful? Well, you could fake a GPS check-in at a location without actually going there or confuse your friends in a location-tracking app by seemingly teleporting around the world. Stay Awake While Charging You can use Android’s Daydream Mode to display certain apps while charging your device. If you want to force Android to display a standard Android app that hasn’t been designed for Daydream Mode, you can enable the Stay awake option here. Android will keep your device’s screen on while charging and won’t turn it off. It’s like Daydream Mode, but can support any app and allows users to interact with them. Show Always-On-Top CPU Usage You can view CPU usage data by toggling the Show CPU usage option to On. This information will appear on top of whatever app you’re using. If you’re a Linux user, the three numbers on top probably look familiar — they represent the system load average. From left to right, the numbers represent your system load over the last one, five, and fifteen minutes. This isn’t the kind of thing you’d want enabled most of the time, but it can save you from having to install third-party floating CPU apps if you want to see CPU usage information for some reason. Most of the other options here will only be useful to developers debugging their Android apps. You shouldn’t start changing options you don’t understand. If you want to undo any of these changes, you can quickly erase all your custom options by sliding the switch at the top of the screen to Off.

  The more I explore Github, the more I like it. I really enjoy how coding is becoming more social. I'm curious as to if there are any bad practices that programmers should avoid in sharing their code with each other. And in naming bad practices, what are the best practices for code sharing? For example: Is it a bad practice for a single repo to have multiple scripts/projects named 'MiscProjects'? Where this repo, as the name suggest, is a collection of miscellaneous small scripts and projects. This may resemble how a programmer organizes projects on his/her local storage, but it's possibly not optimal for code sharing? Maybe if a good README/documentation is done, it would be better? Or as long as it's well documented, anything goes?

  Of late, our broadband internet has been feeling sluggish. A call to the company took way more hold-time than I wanted to spend, and it only fixed the problem for a short while. Thus a perfect opportunity to play with some new tech to solve a problem, in this case, documenting a systemic issue from a service provider. The goal – a log a internet speeds, taken say every 15 min. Recording ping time, upload speed, download speed, and local LAN usage.   The solution A WCF service to measure speeds Internet speed was measured via speedtest.net LAN usage was measured by querying my router for packets received and sent A SQL express instance to persist the data A PowerShell script to invoke the WCF service – launched by Windows’ Task Scheduler An OData WCF Data Service to allow me to read the data MS PowerPivot to show a nice viz (scratch that, the beta expired) LinqPad to get the data, export it to excel Tableau Public to show the viz     Powered by Tableau

  12.04 LTS, on a dell mini 10. Install stable until about a week ago. Updated about 1x a week, sometimes more often. Several days ago, I booted up and the system was no longer working correctly. All these symptoms occurred simultaneously: Cannot run (exit on opening, every time): Update manager, software center, ubuntuOne, libreOffice.
