• Netbook Remix 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade using alternate iso

  I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 now. I'm having the 10.10 alternate iso with me. If I use that iso to upgrade, will I lose my netbook version? I've seen in some forums that the upgrade resulted in a change from netbook version to desktop version. Updated on 15/12/2010 I upgraded the OS from 10.04 to 10.10. But I'm getting an error like this after restart: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory I searched in the forums and got a solution like this: Open Terminal gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf change the line MODULES=most to MODULES=dep Then use Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager) to reinstall initramfs-tools. I'll be definitely trying this later. After that when the system tries to login, my screen starts flashing with just the ubuntu netbook desktop wallpaper on the screen. No other options will be available. It will be flashing continuosly. If I press the power button then one window comes up with options like Shut down, Restart, Hibernate etc. And the screen won't stop flashing either. I've uploaded a 1 min video. Which is not true, because I can add the key in pageant.exe, and I am not mistyping the passphrase... Anything else I can try to change or drop the passphrase?

• How to choose which fields are available via LDAP from an Active Directory

  I'm using PHP to do an ldap search and then pull the attributes out using ldap_get_attributes. This returns an array of data (that can be seen here) however there are some fields that are missing such as Organization Title, department, company, address and telephone number. How to I make these fields available? There is a similar question here: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=15227 I've followed the steps outlined there an tried changing some access permissions but am not really sure what I'm doing and can't see any permissions that directly relate to the fields that I can see when I edit a user in the "Active Directory Users Computers" window. I am a PHP developer, not a Windows server administrator so am finding configuring an AD rather challenging so please don't assume any level of knowledge about AD. I've asked the same question on stack exchange but understand this is a more relevant place to ask.

• nodejs server hanging from time to time

  I have a node server (0.6.6) running an Express application, along with Mongoose and s3, on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine. Several times per hour, the server is hanging. That means that the application is working fine, I see the express loggings, and then all of a sudden the server stops responding. No errors, no traces, no loggings, and strangely enough the browser won't show the request even in the network debugging window. From any machine in the local network it's the same behaviour. I restart the server and it's okay again for several minutes, then again starts to hang, everytime while doing something different. The same application on Amazon on the same Ubuntu version works fine and never hangs. I know all this is kind of vague, but I don't know where to start. Has any of you seen something like this before? Any idea?

• When browsing a specific network share remotely, Windows Explorer continuously jumps back to the parent folder

  I am accessing a specific network path on another domain. It looks something like this: \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\Website\ In under 30 seconds, I am automatically jumped back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\ In less time it then jumps back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\ Then it jumps back to c$ for its final resting place. \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\ At first I thought this had to with a faulty keyboard, but this behaviour also occurs when the window does not have focus. It's as if windows thinks that the folder no longer exists (as in someone else has deleted or moved it). This behaviour is not specific to my PC either, it occurs from other machines in the office. Edit: It looks like this issue only occurs from other Windows 7 machines. There are no issues accessing the path from XP.

• Mac OS X Snow Leopard hangs after login

  After restoring from backup following filesystem corruption my user account hangs after login (After entering my password the login window disappears and all I get is the background and a mouse pointer, no spinning wheel of death etc ..) I can login as a different user and then logout and login as my main account (sometimes!) but this is not consistant. I can login with safemode ok and have tried deleting /System/Caches, ~/Library/Caches and removing all my ~/Library/Preferences which worked once but not again. Does anyone have an any idea which logs I can look in, if any, to see whats happening after login or any other tips? I'm using 10.6.2. Cheers.

• Is individual code ownership important?

  I'm in the midst of an argument with some coworkers over whether team ownership of the entire codebase is better than individual ownership of components of it. I'm a huge proponent of assigning every member of the team a roughly equal share of the codebase. It lets people take pride in their creation, gives the bug screeners an obvious first place to assign incoming tickets, and helps to alleviate "broken window syndrome". It also concentrates knowledge of specific functionality with one (or two) team members making bug fixes much easier. Most of all, it puts the final say on major decisions with one person who has a lot of input instead of with a committee. I'm not advocating for requiring permission if somebody else wants to change your code; maybe have the code review always be to the owner, sure. Nor am I suggesting building knowledge silos: there should be nothing exclusive about this ownership. But when suggesting this to my coworkers, I got a ton of pushback, certainly much more than I expected. So I ask the community: what are your opinions on working with a team on a large codebase? Is there something I'm missing about vigilantly maintaining collective ownership?

• How can I get Windows 7 to remember program windows size and position?

  I can open Outlook and it fills about half of the screen. I then maximize it to read some mail and then minimize it to do some other work. When I click on it again in the taskbar, it is back to the original size that it opened at. I have tried Ctrl-close and Ctrl-maximize but neither seems to work. This also happens with Explorer windows, AutoCAD, Revit, and other programs that I work with. Shouldn't a minimize and a maximize bring the window back to the last size and position?

  I have a problem with detecting collision between 2 models using BoundingSpheres in XNA 4.0. • Is there an alternative to SDL 1.3 for a C++ game that should run on iOS and Android?

  I've used SDL for many desktop games, always as the cross-platform glue for: Creating a window Processing input Rendering images Rendering fonts Playing sounds/music It has never disappointed me at those tasks. But when it comes to graphics, I prefer to work with the OpenGL API directly, even though all of our games are 2D. In the project I'm currently working on, I've made sure to only use the API subset supported by both OpenGL 1.3 and OpenGL 1.0, so making the thing run on Android should be easy, I thought. Turns out there is no official Android or iOS port of SDL yet. However, there's one in SDL 1.3, which is still in development. SDL 1.3 doesn't seem very appealing to me for three reasons: It's been in development for at least 4 years, and I have no idea when it will be done, not to mention stable. It's not ported to as many platforms as SDL 1.2. From what I've seen, it uses OpenGL for drawing, so I suppose the community will move away from directly using OpenGL. So I'm wondering if I should use a different library for our current project - it doesn't matter much if I need to port my existing code from SDL 1.2 to SDL 1.3 or to some other library. We're planning to release on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android, so good support for these platforms is essential. Is there anything stable that does what I want?

• Is it possible to spoof the From: field in Outlook?

  I am wondering if it is possible to change the From: field (not just the reply-to) in Outlook (specifically in the 2010 beta, but also interested in other versions). I am just moving over from Linux and am used to being able to do this quite simply in some clients. At first I thought it was the option of "Other E-Mail address" on the From drop down menu in a compose window, but that seems to do... nothing! I want to be able to do this so I can have email look like it comes from a domain I own but do not wish to run an SMTP server on.

• Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • Password for iis after installing

  After installing IIS on my dev system, window xp professional, its asking for username and password while trying to access http://localhost. Can you please help me out. Tried googling and tried may things but could not resolve the issue. • GNOME/KDE Linux entirely in RAM?

  Hi. I'd like to have very responsive linux but I also like modern, elegant and functional desktops like gnome or kde, not the lightweight ones like xfce or lxde. Once I tried PuppyLinux and was impressed by the responsivity when I clicked an application. In my Ubuntu, it bothers me much when I click chromium and must wait 5 seconds of disk flashing until main window appears. Or evolution or anything else. Is it possible to make GNOME or KDE run entirely in RAM like PuppyLinux (of course, I mean frequently used applications and services, not all) if you have enough of it? I don't care if boot time is longer. I tried using "preload" but it didn't help much.

  Hello, i want to update Preview.app in the background from the command line without losing focus of my current window. I know that i can use the following to open/update the view of a file, but than i lose focus to the Preview.app. open -a Preview foo.pdf I guess there might be some clever Apple Script commands to do so but so far i didn't find the right one. Alternatively i would be interested into transfering the focus back to my current app directly after the update. I need this in order to update Preview.app's view of a pdf through a vi autocmd after i update the pdf according to changes in a tex file i am editing. Here is an example of what i want to achive but using Ubuntu and evince.

• Cannot use second display with 12.04 and Intel 2000/3000

  I am unable to get anything to display on my second monitor, or even get the system to recognize that there is a second screen. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV, revision 2.0 box. The integrated chipset is an Intel 2000/3000, and there are both a D-Dub and a DVI-D display ports on the MB. This is the first operating system I have installed on this system. I have a second monitor plugged into the DVI-D port via a DVI-D to D-Sub adapter. I cannot verify that the motherboard or adapter were/are working, short of installing windows to test the theory. When I go into the "System Settings - Displays" control window, it shows one display. I have rebooted with the second monitor attached, and I have perused the BIOS settings in case it might have been disabled. So far, I have had no indication that the second monitor is recognized, not even a flicker at power on. If I swap monitors and cables between the DVI-D and D-Dub ports, the other monitor lights up, so I know the monitor and video cable are not the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. • Alt-tab icon list in Gnome and metacity?

  Can anyone provide a reference or explain how the icons to the alt-tab list is populated? I would like to specify some icons for some programs that do not have icons, e.g. xterm. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 2 (Ubuntu Classic) and metacity as the window manager. I did see this thread that mentions /usr/share/pixmap/, but if I use cp gnome-terminal.xpm xterm.xpm the icon was not populated in the alt-tab icon list (even after a logout/login). I do see that the icon is populated when I added the xterm command to the Program Menu.

• Unable to connect guest using VMWare Player

  I'm running RedHat server 5.3 as guest on Window XP VMware palyer. the network setting is set to "Host Only", but I have tries all other settings. I'm able to ping the guest machine, but I'm unable to connect it in any other way including webserver, Tomcat, Telnet, ssh. all of the services above are working from within the guest (using localhost). Guest firewall and SELinux are disabled. any idea on what I should check next? every idea will be appreciated... thnaks Ilan

• Ubuntu: Alternative task-switcher to what is provided in compiz

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and really enjoying it. The task switcher default in Ubuntu shows a list of small icons for each running app much like the windows task switcher. It's fast and effective. I enabled Compiz and noticed that the task switcher changed to one with small thumbnails showing a smaller version of each window. Nice, but it slows the task manager down to about 0.5 seconds to display, which for me is far too long. Have googled the forums and it's a very common problem with ubuntu/compiz. I want to run compiz as it provides so many other features, but the slow task switcher is just not going to run with me. So was wondering if there is some way of NOT letting compiz override the task switcher, or, if there is some other task switcher that I can install which will not be slow like the compiz one. Any help would be appreciated.

  I installed the Azure SDK 1.4 while rebuilding my laptop and ran the installation for the Windows Azure Service Management PowerShell CmdLets. Kicked off the installation script for the WASM PowerShell CmdLets by locating the path to which WASM PowerShell CmdLets was deployed to. Double clicked the startHere command. It will then open the WASM installation dialog. Click Next. Click Next. Notice the red x next to the Azure SDK 1.3, the problem is I have SDK 1.4 Here is the workaround, I go back to the location of the deployed WASM sources. Go into the setup path, then scripts>dependencies>check. Now, locate the CheckAzureSDK.ps1 file, and right-click, then edit. This is the content in the ps1 file, it check for the specific version of the Azure SDK, in this case, it is looking for version 1.3.11133.0038. We need for it to check for version 1.4.20227.1419 Now, save your ps1 file, go back to the open WASM install dialog, and click rescan. This time it should pass, then click next. A Command prompt window will appear, click any key. This completes the installation, click Close.

• wget has a 4 second delay

  Hello. I have tried to wget a page with windows/mac, and the response is instant while the linux vesion needs to wait for 4 seconds before it shows the response. I just hope this can be solved.   sir, i have created a web application in eclipse,db2 database server is running on my pc.so i can access the web application through the address http://localhost:8080/LimsWeb i used team viewer software to establish a remote desktop connection. can my friend somehow connect to my pc so that when he types the above url in his browser he will be able to fetch the pages of the application. i was able to do this by connecting with remote desktop mode.but in that case my friend was able to use the application which i created running on my pc only and in the window provided by team viewer.i want that he can run the application on his own computer calling the given url from his own browser. please help

• accidentally concatenate a large file on a remote system

  Every once in a while on a computer I'm ssh'd into, I will accidentally type "cat largefile.txt" and my screen will start rushing with text for the next 10 minutes. I'm always working in a screen session, so my current solution is to just log out and then log back in, and since it can go 100X faster when I'm logged out, it'll finish in the short time it takes me to type my password in again. Is there a better way? Either involving the fact I'm in a screen session? Or a way to do this within SSH? What doesn't work: detaching from the screen session (doesn't respond until file is done outputting) trying command to move to a different window in the screen session (also doesn't respond) typing ctrl+C to kill cat command (also doesn't respond, probably because the command is done and the buffers just have to catch up)
