• How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?

  I have a private key set up for my github account, the passphrase to which is, I believe, stored in OS X's keychain. I certainly don't have to type it in when I open a terminal window and enter ssh [email protected]. However, when I'm running bash over an ssh session, or locally inside a tmux session, I have to type in the passphrase every single time I attempt to ssh to github. This question suggests that a similar problem exists with screen, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to fix it in tmux. There's also this page which includes a fairly complicated solution, but for zsh. • Adobe Reader - Content Preparation progress

  Hello, I was wondering recently if is it just me or anyone else noticed it: why Adobe Reader after opening every single document displays "Content preparation" window with progress bar and it lasts for ages.. ? On linux pdf readers work hell lot better (faster), on windows other readers also work faster. Some years back in the past Adobe Reader also used to be quick. What has happened? PDF files aren't bigger/more complex compared to 3-4 years ago. Computers are at least dual core and with much more ram and displaying pdf files is getting slower and slower..

• Is there an application that can automatically set Graphics Properties when docking?

  I have a dual display setup with my laptop (Dell, with integrated graphics, WinXP). The problem is that whenever I hook up the laptop to the monitor I have to go to Graphics Properties (Intel Graphics Media Driver for Mobile) and set the display resolution, window position, etc. Note that this screen is different than the built-in one you usually see in WinXP. 1) Is there an app that can save display settings properly so they will come back when I dock again? 2) Barring this, run a script or a macro to automatically set up the display the way I want it. 3) Or, can I write a .Net program that does this for me? Extra points if there is an Open source app that can do this.

• Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari - hangs up on start

  I have a strange problem on Windows Vista (Automatic updates). Long time ago I had installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari and Opera and they all worked well. Once upon a time, after Windows restart, Firefox, Thunderbird and Safari won't start. [Opera (USB) works fine]. When I start the browser, program name is listed on the processes list, but it is not activated, doesn't show any window. I tried crating new profiles with -ProfileManager, restarting Windows, reinstalling the browsers. I scanned the system for suspected programs and it looks clean. There is 45GB of free HDD space. WTF?

• Why are applications slowing down on the computer's second monitor?

  Here's an interesting one. Problem I have a user on Windows XP who is running a web application inside IE8. She has two monitors plugged in via DVI cables. When she is working the the browser on her primary monitor, everything is fine, but when she drags the window over to the second monitor, the web applications functionality grinds to a halt. It's not just web apps either - many applications exhibit the problem. What I've tried Switching the two monitors in the OS. It's obviously not the monitor's fault. Confirmed that it's the app slowing down, and not the graphical rendering. The application in question actually locks up. The mouse is unaffected, and I can drag other windows on top of the problematic application. Any ideas?

• Launcher icons are invisible after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  I am re-purposing an old laptop. I installed 11.10 on it and then immediately upgraded to 12.04. (I could not directly install 12.04 as my system does not support PAE.) When my system was (briefly) 11.10, the desktop appeared as expected. However, after the upgrade to 12.04, the icons in the launcher area are invisible. If I hover over the spot where the icon should be the little popup window showing the tool's name appears, and I can click to invoke the tool. I just cannot see the icons. ![invisible icons in launcher][1] The icons do appear as expected in other contexts, for example in the Home folder and in Dash Home. My theme is "Ambiance (default)" I do not have a ~/.icons folder. This is the top level contents of /usr/share/icons: default DMZ-Black DMZ-White gnome handhelds hicolor HighContrast HighContrastInverse Humanity Humanity-Dark locolor LoginIcons LowContrast redglass ubuntu-mono-dark ubuntu-mono-light unity-icon-theme whiteglass (Sorry for the poor formatting, can't get it to show in list.) I suspect that the launcher isn't looking for the icons in the right place, but I don't know how to confirm that, or how to correct. This is my first foray into Linux, although I used to use Unix a few decades ago. This doesn't look much like my old Sun workstation, though! Does anyone have any suggestions or insights for me? • VMware Kernel Module Updater hangs on Ubuntu 13.04

  VMware Player has a nice auto-detection of kernel changes, and requests the user to compile the required modules in order to load them. This happens from time to time after a regular update of your system. Usually, the dialog of VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up, asks for root access authentication, and completes the compilation. VMware Player or Workstation checks if modules for the active kernel are available. In theory this is supposed to work flawlessly but in reality there are pitfalls occassionally. With the recent upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and the latest kernel 3.8.0-21 the actual VMware Kernel Module Updater simply disappeared and the application wouldn't start as expected. When you launch VMware Player as super user (root) the dialog would stall like so: VMware Kernel Module Updater stalls while stopping the services Prior to version 5.x of VMware Player or version 7.x of VMware Workstation you would run a command like: $ sudo vmware-config.pl to resolve the module version conflict but this doesn't work anyway. Solution Instead, you have to execute the following line in a terminal or console window: $ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Those switches are (as of writing this article) not documented in the output of the --help switch. But VMware already documented this procedure in their knowledge base: VMware Workstation stops functioning after updating the kernel on a Linux host (1002411). Update As of today I had the first kernel upgrade to version 3.8.0-22 in Ubuntu 13.04. Don't even try it without vmware-modconfig...

• OpenGL doesn't draw (3.3+) [on hold]

  Brief: I've been following this tutorial about OpenGL for 2 days, and I still can't have a triangle drawn, so I'm asking for help here. The tutorial is turned to OpenGL version 3.3 programing, using vertex arrays, buffers, etc. The libraries are: GLFW3 and GLEW, and I setted them by myself. The screen keeps black all the time. Full code: link here (It's just like a Hello World opengl program) Further Details: I get no errors at all. I downloaded a software to test my video card, and it supports OpenGL 4.1+ Standard OpenGL code for drawing (from earlier version) such as this one works normally. I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 I presume all the OpenGL implementation was dune right: I added Additional Dependences to the linker as glew32.lib, opengl32.lib, glfw3.lib. The glew.dll was placed at SysWOW64 - because I'm running window 64bits, and glew is 32. Notes: I've been working hard to find out what this is, but I can't find. I would appreciate if anyone could test this code for me, so I can know if I implemented something wrong, and that its not my code.

I checked the path and this path doesn't exist. I couldn't remember that I have a file of D5CC9d01 once. Can somebody please tell me if this is a virus or not? Thanks

• Why did the web win the space of remote applications and X not?

  The X Window System is 25 years old, it had it's birthday yesterday (on the 15'th). As you probably are aware of, one of it's most important features is the separation of the server side and the client side in a way that neither Microsoft's, Apples or Wayland's windowing systems have. Back in the days (sorry for the ambiguous phrasing) many believed X would dominate over other ways to make windows because of this separation of server and client, allowing the application to be ran on a server somewhere else while the user clicks and types on her own computer at home. This use obviously still exists, but is marginalized at best. When we write and use programs that run on a server we almost always use the web with it's html/css/js. Why did the web win, and X not? The technologies used for the web (said html/css/js) are a mess. Combined with all the back-end-frameworks (Rails, Django and all) it really is a jungle to navigate thru. Still the web thrives with creativity and progress, while remote X apps do not.

• keyPressed is not working after adding ActionListener to JButton

  I have a serious problem while trying to build a menu for my game. I've added two JButton to a main JPanel and added an ActionListener for each of them. The main JPanel also contains the game JPanel which have the keyPressed method inside keyController. That's how it looks - Main -       JPanel -         JButton, JButton,         JPanel which contains the game and keyPressed function inside KeyController class which worked fine before I added the ActionListener for JButton. For some reason after I added an ActionListener for each of the button, the game JPanel is not getting any keyPreseed events nor KeyRealesed. Does anyone know the solution for my situation? • Copy contents of a folder, but none of its subfolders?

  I'm using the explorer bar (the bar to the left of the main folder/files section in an explorer window) to show folders. I don't have access to open any of the folders, themselves (at least none on C:\ (the C drive). For some reason, I do however have copy rights (I can copy the folders). Because I can only see the folders, is there a way for me to copy the main folder, but not any of the subfolders? A localized example could be how to copy all files in C:\documents...[user]\my documetns\ but none of the folders (ex. C:\documents...[user]\my documetns\my pictures...) Is there a way for me only to copy a folder, but not its subfolders?

• Who can change the View in MVC?

  I'm working on a thick client graph displaying and manipulation application. I'm trying to apply the MVC pattern to our 3D visualization component. Here is what I have for the Model, View, and Controller: Model - The graph and it's metadata. This includes vertices, edges, and the attributes of each. It does not contain position information, icons, colors, or anything display related. View - This would commonly be called a scene graph. It includes the 3D display information, texture information, color information, and anything else that is related specifically to the visualization of the model. Controller - The controller takes the view and displays it in a Window using OpenGL (but it could potentially be any 3D graphics package). The application has various "layouts" that change the position of the vertices in the display. For instance, one layout may arrange the vertices in a circle. Is it common for these layouts to access and change the view directly? Should they go through the Controller to access the View? If they go through the Controller, should they just ask for direct access to the View or should each change go through the controller? I realize this is a bit different from the standard MVC example where there a finite number of Views. In this case, the View can change in an infinite number of ways. Perhaps I'm shattering some basic principle of MVC here. Thanks in advance!

• How to disable an "always there" program if it isn't in the processes list?

  I have Crashplan and it is constantly running in the background and making backups every 15 minutes. It caused some problems with the backup target folders, so I want it to be inactive while I am making changes to these folders. I started the application itself, but could not find some kind of "Pause" button. So I decided to just stop its process. I first tried the lazy way - the system monitor in the Gnome panel has a "Processes" tab - but didn't find it listed there. Then I did a sudo ps -A and read through the whole list. I don't recognize everything on the list (many process names are self-explaining, like evolution-alarm, but I don't recognize others like phy0) but there was nothing which sounded even remotely like crashplan. But I know that there must have been a process belonging to Crashplan running at this time, because the main Crashplan window was open when I ran the command. Do you have any advice how to stop this thing from running? The best solution would involve temporary preventing it from loading on boot too, since I may need to reboot while doing the maintenance there.

• How do I restore the default applets to Gnome's notification area?

  I have a fresh install of Karmic Koala. In a botched attempt at trying to change my default window manager, I somehow removed at least three applets from the notification area: network manager (nm-applet), volume control (gnome-volume-control-applet), and the battery meter (???). Now if I logout and back in, these applets don't run, but I can start them from the command line. Because it's a fresh install, I completely removed my luser account and home directory. After recreating my account, I was frustrated to find that the applets are still missing and no obvious way to add them back. How can I restore the default configuration?

• A software to lock regions of a screen to prevent any windows from overlapping

  I've just installed nexus dock (a similar application like rocketdock), after playing with the preferences i've come across a very curious option (under position & behavior) that says: Prevent maximized windows from overlapping the dock. With it enabled, any application I maximize(and i do mean any) won't overlap the dock, it's really great. So i'm thinking perhaps there's a software that does this kind of feature which is really ideal for keeping my workspace really organized. I really hate repositioning and resizing my windows everytime. Of course there's always the manual way of doing these but it's just too much of a bother when someone from the family uses the computer. Do you know any software that does this? even a software that can just save/remember window positions would also be nice too.

• backlight doesn't work on acer 5732z tried everything I can find

  Ok if you can solve my problem you're really really good. I want to run ubuntu 12.04 on my acer aspire 5732z I know (from research) that these computer's have issues with the backlight on ubuntu. So I tried a couple of solutions: The "sudo lightdm restart" method. I get no change at all. The "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" method. This so far has been the most effective, I first tried it in the F1 console right away I get the screen back, problem is going back to the desktop it goes back to being black. So I tried it from a terminal window and it works as well but as soon as I unplug my external monitor the screen turns black again and doesn't come back. If I plug the monitor back in the screen stays black and the only thing I see is the mouse pointer. From here I go back into console (which I am able to see) and reboot from there. The "sudo sed -i 's/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux"/g' /etc/default/grub" method. This one I got no instant change and after reboot still no change. I'm open to pretty much any suggestions you may have.

• Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane

  Here's a prototype for some kind of backoffice content management system. Several interesting goodies are included, such as an embedded JavaScript editor, as can be seen in the screenshot: Key items of interest in the above are as follows: Embedded JavaScript editor (i.e., the latest and greatest Nashorn technology, look it up, if you're not aware of what that is.) The way that's done is to include the relevant JavaScript modules in your NetBeans Platform application. Make very sure to include "Lexer to NetBeans Bridge", which does a bunch of critical stuff under the hood. The JEditorPane is defined as follows, along the lines that I blogged about recently thanks to Steven Yi: javaScriptPane.setContentType("text/javascript"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/javascript"); javaScriptPane.setEditorKit(kit); javaScriptPane.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/javascript"); Note that "javaScriptPane" above is simply a JEditorPane. Timon Veenstra's excellent solution for integrating Nodes with MultiViewElements, which is described here by Timon, and nowhere else in the world. The tab you see above is within a pluggable container, so anyone else could create a new module and register their own MultiViewElement such that it will be incorporated into the editor. • How to make fonts smooth and readable in Debian/Ubuntu?

  What is the best, most foolproof way of getting nice font rendering in Linux? Currently, I am experiencing thin, ugly fonts (shown below). I have wasted too much time tweaking fonts.conf, and I have yet to find a decent combination. I am running Debian 6.0 with no desktop environment (just Openbox for a window manager) in a VM on a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4). • Is there a way to have a working search bar in Explorer with Windows Search Service disabled?

  I had to disable Windows Search Service (turn it off in Windows Features) for the reason that it was constantly using the hard drive in an excessive way (maybe because I've got very large quantities of files on my PC), noticeably slowing down my computer, and the Windows.edb database file grew way too large, about 2.5 GB in size. But the side-effect of it is that now the search bar is gone from any Explorer window and I miss this useful feature. So my question is, is there a way to stop Windows Search Service torturing my hard drive and still being able to search for files and folders directly from Explorer, perhaps using some third-party software?

• What's wrong with my MAC address?

  I have a D-Link DSL-2650U router, and exactly one computer on the network. For reasons of port forwarding I want to give my computer a static internal IP address, so that I don't take the chance of losing my NAT settings every time the computer reboots. So here's a screen shot that summarizes the entire problem: WTH is wrong with my MAC address? It's copied and pasted from the command prompt window! I tried editing out the dashes, but it still doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a bug in the D-Link firmware?
