• Last step in HDD Recovery (fixing windows)

  My dad’s hard drive corrupted which was a result of many bad sectors. Anyway, I made a clone of the drive and have now repaired it totally (recreating the MBR and MFT) and doing a series of ChkDsk's on it. I can now see all the files and folder on it and it is all intact. I currently have it as a slave in my computer (where I was doing all the repairs). When putting it back into the computer, it comes up with "A disk read error occurred: Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to Restart". I don’t know why this is happening but think it might have something to do with file permissions. I have tried a start-up recovery on the Vista boot CD and it found no problems. When trying to apply file permissions (and creating file perms for the SYSTEM group (as it didn’t have any for SYSTEM group)) it couldn't apply them for some of the System32 folder files. I have tried applying them as admin and with as powerful privileges I can get. All to no avail. When it is in my PC I can boot it up (I added it into my bootloader) and it boots up fine except when it logs in it comes up with the error - "Rundll32.exe - Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" This message keeps coming back and nothing loads at all. Any help would be greatly received as I have got so far with the data recovery and want to avoid a reformat at all costs due to the vast number of programs installed and I don’t have much time on my hands!   I have the weirdest problem, for the last few days every hour or so (not exact) the clock jumps about back in jumps of 15 to 60 minutes and after some time the internet disconnects. i can reconnect the internet by unplugging and plugging back the network cable. This is the second time this problem happens to me, the first time was when I installed VirtualBox. whaen I removed it the problem was gone. This time I have no idea what triggered it, the only thing I installed about the time the problem started was iTunes update (10.5.1) I tried removing it but the problem remained. (also tried to remove other programs i installed day or 2 before and it also didn't help) also, this is not a VM and currently I don't have any VM software. any ideas..? UPDATE since the solution is in the comments i'll write it here - apparently the windows time service got broken, this is the fix: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738995(WS.10).aspx (run "fix it" from IE browser only) UPDATE 2 The fix didn't work, about 2 hours passed and first the internet disconnected and then the clock jumped back... This probably means that the problem is not only in the clock

• Disk operations in windows 7 are slow

  My computer started lagging last Sunday. I tried to reboot it and it failed. Trying to boot into failsafe mode takes around two hours. It mainly freezes on two files: scsiport.sys and classpnp.sys When it finally has started all disc operations are really slow. When it has run for a while it goes faster, probably due to data moved into RAM instead. It froze on an other file before that was associated with Avast but uninstalling it didn't really help. A critical windows update was installed on Sunday but rolling back the update didn't help. I had a guess about the sound card but disabling the sound card drivers also didn’t help. I have an inkling of an idea that it might be Intel rapid storage technology that might be acting up but it doesn't allow me to reinstall it from failsafe mode and I haven't been able to log into normal mode for a while. I would appreciate suggestions regarding how to get into normal mode again and/or what can be the root cause.

  I'm using the following script to handle removing any old networked printers from machines and then assigning the propper ones and making one of them the default. This script is assigned to the OU the workstations reside in and uses group policy loopback so all users that login will get the appropriate printers mapped for them. I tried to use the new Printer Manager as part of W2K3 R2 but when assigning the default this way I get an error that the printer doesn't exist so I'm back to using the script. One flaw that I'm noticing is that it won't remove any printers that happen to be mapped from an RDP session (we don't see this everywhere but there are a few locations). Is there any way to enumerate all RDP printers and remove them similar to how I'm enumerating and removing networked printers? ' ' Printers.vbs - Windows Logon Script. • No access to Windows 2003 admin shares

  This is the environment: Several Win 2003 SP 2 servers and several Win XP SP2 & SP3 clients. All in the same LAN. Firewall is disabled everywhere. No recent Windows updates or configuration changes. This is the problem: Since last Thursday, I log on to any other server or workstation as any regular (non-admin) user and I fail to be able to open ADMIN SHARES ONLY (namely \\server1\c$, \\server1\e$ and \\server1\admin$). The error message is: "\server1\c$ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again." I can, however, open the same shares if I use FQDN or IP address: \\server1.domain.local\c$ \\172.0.0.1\c$ Other shares do not have this issue and I can open them without any issue. Any ideas or suggestion would be truly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

• Windows Server 2003 (w/Exchange) move to new machine

  I have an ageing domain controller (the only one on a 10-pc network) which needs rebooting often. I have a Dell Poweredge 2850 server doing nothing, so I'd like to move the DC to that, but here's the catch - I don't have Win2k Server Std install media any more as it's been lost. I purchased "Easus Todo Backup Advanced Server" which claims to be able to recover to dissimilar metal, but it's not quite working (although I don't think it's the product's fault) I know the server and PERC RAID card are good because I installed Ubuntu on the logical drive (4 x 72GB disks RAID 5) no problems. I've booted frmo the Easus Todo backup CD (which is WinPE based) and recovered to the logical disk on the RAID (after installing driver inside the WinPE environment from a NAS drive) The problem is when I boot the server, I can get the OS selection menu, but any option results in a blank screen, with no errors. I figure this is probably because the driver wasn't installed on the old machine (which is IDE-based (i know, i know!) and doesn;t have a RAID controller) I've booted from the CD and copied the mraid35x.sys file to the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder on the recovered system, but it makes no difference. I made a boot.ini with rdisks 0-10 defined, and booting from each of these resulted in a file error (i.e. 'this isn't a real disk') - the only disk that gets any response (the blank screen) is multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) which just gives me the blank black screen and no disk activity. Is there any way I can force the drvier to be installed on the source system (so i can do a full backup again), i've tried right-clicking the oemsetup.inf and clicking install, but it didn't actually do anything. I attempted to force it with the 'Add new hardware' wizard and forcing with the 'have disk' option but it still gave me no hardware to select. Also I've got an identical machine running WinXP which uses the PERC driver successfully (which was obviously done at install time) and the boot.ini settings are the same : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Windows 7 not booting after failed SRT (SSD caching) install

  This is a fairly new computer, only about a month old. i7 2700k, z68 motherboard, with a 1.5tb WD black HD, and a 128gb crucial M4 ssd. I followed the instructions for setting up ssd caching, the SATA controller was set to RAID, I installed the intel software and enabled acceleration and it said everything went fine. But when I went to reboot, I received the lovely "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error message. I checked the bios, and it was booting from the correct HD (I tried the only other option anyway just in case, it was the ~50 odd gb of unformatted space left on the SSD) AFter that I entered the raid until (ctrl-i at boot) and removed the acceleration and deleted the raid array (because it was being used as a cache this was non destructive) Still no boot. So I reinstalled win7 directly on the SSD, booted, and checked the HDD to make sure it hadn't been wiped. It hadn't, all the files were still there, including all the windows stuff. I backed up my data to an external drive just in case, but I'd really like to get this install booting again. I trawled the webs a bit, and have tried entering recovery mode and using the bootrec.exe and bootsect.exe to fix it, but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm doing with those. My question is basically: How do I make my harddrive bootable again?

• Missing Memory on Windows Server 2008

  I have a windows 2008 x64 server with 8GB of RAM installed. Task Manager and Resource Monitor both insist that 7.5GB of the RAM is in use. However, the memory list under Processes (Memory Private Bytes) doesn't add up. I do have Show Processes from all users checked and hand adding the numbers I come up with about 3.5GB of RAM. I also looked at the latest copy of SysInternals Process Explorer. And neither the Private Bytes or Working Set adds up to more than about 3.5GB of RAM in use. What's going on? ===== Update: I bounced the server to see what would happen with the memory utilization. After boot and regular operations began it sat at 3GB of RAM usage. 18 hours later, it's back up to 6.8GB of usage with no indication as to where the additional 3.5GB or so of RAM is being used. Here are links to screen shots of the resource monitor and task manager: Resource Monitor Task Manager Update 2: Well, I believe I located the problem. When I detached one of the larger databases from my sql server the amount of ram shown as "in use" dropped drastically. The Memory Private Bytes count barely moved. So I'm guessing that SQL server has some way of allocating memory where it doesn't really show up in any of the monitors. I went further and created a new database file, then transferred all of the data from the one I detached. Even though it has the same data, and the same transactions going through it, the memory in use has stayed low. Maybe there was some corruption in the DB? I'll leave it to the DB gods and go searching for another "problem" ;)

• Utilu IE Collection IE6 crashes under Windows 7

  I've installed Utilu IE Collection under Windows 7 64-bit, but am unable to successfully run IE6 (specifically, "Internet Explorer 6.0 (6.00.2900.2180)"). I haven't tried other versions of IE from the package, so their behavior is unknown. It starts up fine, but the address bar isn't shown. (Attempted to post image, but I'm a newbie on SU and it wouldn't let me. Can be found here.) View-Toolbars shows 'Address Bar' already selected. Plan to use 40 for debian install, 6GB for swap space Have a 16GB USB drive Downloaded http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ Downloaded DVD files of stable debian-7.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso ( debian-7.0.0-amd64-DVD-2.iso and 3) After I choose HD install, unetbootin says place the ISO in the same place. but I have 3. do i need to merge them? if so any freeware to do that? can i do it with 7zip? when I extract with 7 zip there are classes between the 3 ISO files. Just over write? Options to merge (format etc for 7zip) ? • Lost user account for Windows Vista

  Hello, I'm trying to help a friend who's lost her user account in Vista. I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • Windows takes a very long time to shut down even in safe mode

  On Windows 7 the computer freezes for about 5 minutes once it gets to "Shutting down...". I can't remember when it started happening. I just lived with it for a while. The first thing I tried was a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. This did not solve the problem. I then went into msconfig and turned off everything I could get away with in the startup and services tabs. This did not solve the problem. I then uninstalled every program on this computer save the most basic programs. This did not solve the problem (did not uninstall drivers or catalyst). I then went through and turned off every single service and did a reboot. This did not solve the problem. I then booted into safe mode and just tried shutting it down. The problem even happens in safe mode. I have tried examining the event logs but with no success. They just say things like "blah blah has entered the stopped state" with no real clues about what program is causing me all this grief. *it may be worth noting that Ubuntu is installed on the same computer and the ubuntu boot loader is the one being used.

  I was trying to change the port of my mysql server in my local machine but i can't. The version of mysql is 5.6.12, is an installation from wamp and I am on Windows 8. I change these lines in my my.ini file located in (C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12). [client] #password = your_password port = 3307 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock [wampmysqld] port = 3307 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock key_buffer = 16M max_allowed_packet = 1M The previous values were 3306. Ok then I've reset the server installed, but it doesn't works, the mysql server is still running on 3306. Then, I rename the path of the services with this, to make sure that the my.ini is read by the mysql instance. c:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\bin\mysqld.exe --defaults-file="C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\my.ini" wampmysqld But nothing, it stil doesn't works. My last bullet was to copy the content of my.ini to a file my-default.ini (a file that is placed in C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\ and that I don't know what is its mission). However it still doesn't work and the port is still 3306.

• Windows 7 misses keystrokes from internal keyboard after hibernation (on Acer Aspire 5820)

  I face a very strange symptom on my Acer Aspire laptop (with the factory default Win7 install and divers. Windows update running). After waking the computer from hibernation, it is a pain to type, since on average 5-10 keypresses are missing per 100 presses, using the laptop's keyboard. Steps to reproduce: 1) Power off 2) Power on, wait for system to become usable 3) Open notepad, for 5 times do hit 10x the same character. This gives a similar pattern of 50 chars total: xxxxxxxxxxyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaassssssssssdddddddddd 4) Optionally repeat. Everything is fine this far. 5) Hibernate. 6) Power on and resume. 7) Repeat steps 3)-4). This time approximately 3-5 character will be missing from each 50 characters. What I ruled out: putting to Sleep or just Locking and resuming from there does not cause problem battery / AC usage does not matter net connection does not matter running processes seem to be the same before and after hibernation key press speed doesn't really matter. For the test I use a nominal 3-5 strokes/second beat. plugging in an external USB keyboard works fine, but the built-in one still misbehaves What could be the problem? How could I diagnose if the keypresses arrive in, but get swallowed at some point? (maybe some nasty keyboard handler hook misbehaves?). Update: It seems that pushing the PowerSmart button and toggling to power saving state fixes the problem. Also, toggling it again back to the original state keeps it fixed. So this may be a fine workaround, but is not a conforming solution.

• Windows 7 pc freezes for an indeterminate amount of time after unlocking

  Not sure if this type of question is appropriate for this forum, but I've tried everything I can think of to solve this problem aside from format/reinstall. I recently got a new work PC (Dell optiplex 755) with windows 7 professional x64. Standard developer software installed for .net development: VS2008, VS2005, SQL management studio, office 2007, etc. Recently I've been having this weird problem where after I lock my pc, when I try to unlock it, the screen will be black for awhile after unlocking. I can ctl+alt+del and put my password in but then it just goes black. The amount of time on the black screen seems to be related to the amount of time I am away from my PC. If only away a few minutes, it'll take about a minute to get to the desktop. If away for an hour, could take up to 15 minutes. If I lock it and go home for the night, I have to restart my PC in the morning (I've let it sit for an hour after a night of being locked and nothing happened). It doesn't do it every time but definitely the majority of the time. One weird thing I've seen is that if I remote into my machine before trying to log back in it does not do it. I uninstalled all software back to the point when I remember it started happening and it still does it. I was using this PC for a few weeks without this problem happening at all. Anyone know what my next troubleshooting steps could be? My IT department tried to fix it by moving my old profile to another disk and having me log in, effectively recreating a profile from scratch but that didn't solve it. • Web shortcuts (.url) not working on Windows 7

  I'm experiencing several symptoms, but I believe they are all related to web link files not working. First, I can't create we link files anymore. When I try New Shortcut and put an URL, I get the following error message: Second, existent shortcuts are not working. The default context menu action (or double-click) is Print, which simply prints an empty page. If I try to see its properties, there's no URL there. Third, IE bookmarks are also not working. One difference is that the default action is Open, IE does nothing when I click it. Adding a new bookmark only creates one more dead link file. I'm almost sure this problem occurred after I tried to install IE 7 on Windows 7. Unfortunately, it didn't work because the OS seems to be bound to IE 8. I already tried to reinstall/repair IE 8, but it made no difference. Does anyone experienced a similar problem? I need a working solution, but I welcome any reasonable suggestion.

• Windows - Decrypt encrypted file when user account is destroyed

  I have a Virtual Machine running on my Windows Server 2008 computer that originally was received by me encryped, as the builder of the VM did it on a MAC, which decrypts files by default. I never thought to decrypt these files, as they automatically 'decrypt' when you have permission over them, so the VM has been running for over a year despite the encryption. I just upgraded my computer to Domain Controller (dcpromo.exe). Now when I try to access/run the VM, I can't because I don't have permission to decrypt the files as that was on another logon (local administrator) and now I am the domain administrator. Apparently the local admin is totally nuked when you upgrade to domain controller. I have tried EVERYTHING - taking ownership of the files, which works. Doesn't do anything for me. Adding full control to everyone on the files. I go to File Properties Advanced Details (under encryption) Users who can access this file. The only user is administrator@localcomputername, and there is a cert number. I try adding a new cert, I don't have permission. I don't have permission to: Decrypt the file (access is denied). Copy the file (to another computer) - access denied. I am totally stumped and this VM is a production machine and needs to get up right now. Does anyone have any ideas?

• PHP 5.3.5 Windows installer missing php_ldap.dll

  I'm working with Windows Server 2008, Apache 2.2. I'm using php-5.3.5-Win32-VC6-x86.msi as the installer, using the threadsafe version. I've gone through the install process four or five times just to make sure that I'm not missing anything ridiculous, but I don't think I am. The problem is that the php_ldap.dll extension simply doesn't seem to exist. It's not present in the installer interface (where the user is asked to choose which extensions to install), and it definitely doesn't appear in the ext/ directory after install. I found a lot of mentions of this issue for 5.3.3, including links to download the extension individually. Those links no longer exist, of course, and besides: they were for 5.3.3. I'd really rather use an extension that belongs with PHP 5.3.5. Anyone else encounter this problem? Any ideas as to what's going wrong? Anyone seen acknowledgement by the PHP folks that the file is indeed missing, and that it's an oversight? It's quite a frustration because the server I'm building has no purpose if I don't have PHP LDAP support. Cheers all, and thanks in advance for your assistance.

• Different behaviour when running exe from command prompt than in windows

  Forgive me if I'm not using the correct terminology here but I'll try to explain the issue I'm having as best I can! We use a program that allows you to view video footage from several cameras, and it works in such a way that when it is opened it then automatically loads several video files within its interface. These video files are stored in a subfolder, e.g. "videos\video1.asf", etc. I didn't create the program so I can't say what method it uses to open the files. The files are stored on a network server and are being accessed via a share/UNC path. When the file is run from windows explorer (by navigating to the network share and double-clicking the exe), it works perfectly. When the file is run via the (elevated) command prompt (e.g. by typing the \server\path\to\file.exe) it opens, but the corresponding video files do not load. I am trying to create a script that launches the program via the command prompt, so the first step is finding out why the two actions above have different consequences. Any advice on how running executables from the command prompt could produce a different result would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• Windows 7 Synchronize folders BUT while some files are open

  I need some way to synchronize 2 drives I have. I want to do this ofter (once a day or so) There is the main drive that I want to clone/synchronize on a backup hard disk. The problem is in that there is an open TrueCrypt file mounted as a drive, and its live. If you don't know what true crypt is, basically you create a file on a hard disk and that file is encrypted. It's constantly open and modified live. Also Its pretty large. 100GB + I will use freefilesync . There are many tools that can do that. My question is, is it safe to copy the encrypted file while its open ? Does the software freeze the file in one state and copies it ? Or will I get a corrupted file on the other drive ? It was not clear to me how windows handles that. I read something about shadow copy, and the software says that it supports this. Does anyone know something on the matter that can help me ? or some software that will work ok in my scenario ? Thanks

  I have a problem with the Windows Server 2008 guest (hvm). I can't get a network interface running for him. I also have a Debian guest and it's working ok, but I can't do it with the Win2k8 guest. • Windows Server 2008 Alerting to Low memory

  I have a file and print server running on Windows 2008 R2 fully patched in a VSphere environment (ESXi 5.1 fully updated). Every evening between 19:20 and 19:30 our monitoring software reported that the available memory is 1% and performance is dire. There is nothing in the event logs to point to an issue. At this point in the evening I am general the only user on the system to check to see why these alerts are going off. Things I have done; Checked to see if any backups are running – None at all. Checked Scheduled tasks – None before or during this time period. Moved the VM to another host. AV is disabled to rule out that as the issue. The server does not have any problems during the day with memory when fully loaded with about 50 users. The server did have 4GB ram provisioned but I have increased this to 5Gb. Running PrefMon at the time (I will save the graphs tonight) There very little CPU usage at the time but RAM usage goes up.
