  • PHP multiple __autoload functions *without* the use of spl_register_autoload?

    I'm an author of a growing library of PHP + QuickBooks related code. I'd like to utilize PHPs __autoload() function, however my code is a library that other people can include() into their own applications, so I can't rely on __autoload() being not already defined. Is there a way to have multiple __autoload() functions? I saw spl_autoload_register() in the PHP manual, but not all of my users have the SPL extension installed, so I can't rely on that. If there was a way to fall-back to using this and use normal require/include statements by default, I might consider that. Does anyone else have any other clever solutions to this issue? It seems like a glaring oversight to only be able to have a single __autoload() function...

  • Drop into read-eval-print loop from PHP code?

    Is there a way to drop into a read-eval-print loop from inside PHP code during execution, in a script that was run from the command line? That is, like php -a or phpsh? Or do I have to re-implement a REPL from scratch? I can't find any way to do it. To clarify: the reason why I need to do this is that I want to automatically include all the files in my project once the REPL starts, instead of having to manually include everything by hand.

    I am developing a website in PHP that let the user to upload images and then let him to decide how the image should be using jQuery - PHP integeration to select the area that wanted to be the picture and then click the crop button to crop it and save it. The problem that I am facing is that not all images type are good to crop and save so I noticed that the easy solution for it to convert the image to JPG and then let the user to crop it because it's the easy way to do it in JPG format. How I can do it? Is this the best solution for images types problem?

  • Export environment variable from PHP, for use by exec()'d shell command?

    Somewhat similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2002970/export-a-variable-from-php-to-shell, but my problem is different. I am forced to work with a program that gets an important location variable from an Environment Variable (Linux), rather than a config or, better, a command line option. I have to call this program from within PHP, and currently am doing it like so: shell_exec('/path/to/program option1 option2'); I need to be able to set/override the environment variable that program will be looking for. As an example, this does not work: shell_exec('VAR1=foo /path/to/program option1 option2'); nor does: shell_exec('VAR1=foo; export foo; /path/to/program option1 option2'); for good measure. Both of the above command lines work "as expected" from the shell. Is it possible to override environment variables for programs called via exec, shell_exec, etc?

  • Is it possible to resolve domain names to an IP address with PHP?

    Well, very simple question. So that's good news for you, I guess. More thorough explanation: I have a PHP script allowing me to add urls to a database. I want the script to resolve the url to an IP address as well, to store that, too. However, some of the URLs are like this: http://111.111.111.111/~example/index.php So it also needs to work with that. I'm not SURE that this is possible, but it only makes sense it would be. So: Is it possible, and if so, how?

    Hi Community, I've only written a few small php web apps and I'm throwing code together right now to allow for users to submit short stories. these stories will display and allow others to vote them up. The winner receives something rather valuable and I'm paranoid people are going to try to manipulate it. Debian / Apache / PHP 5.2 / jquery users are not required to login / authenticate. users can vote multiple stories up but only once for each story Is it as simple as tagging each story with an IP address and not counting other submissions from that IP?   • What's the deal with a leading underscore in PHP class methods?

    While looking over various PHP libraries I've noticed that a lot of people choose to prefix some class methods with a single underscore, such as public function _foo() ...instead of... public function foo() I realize that ultimately this comes down to personal preference, but I was wondering if anyone had some insight into where this habit comes from. My thought is that it's probably being carried over from PHP 4, before class methods could be marked as protected or private, as a way of implying "do not call this method from outside the class". However, it also occurred to me that maybe it originates somewhere (a language) I'm not familiar with or that there may be good reasoning behind it that I would benefit from knowing. Any thoughts, insights and/or opinions would be appreciated.

  • Is it possible to build this type of program in PHP?

    I want to build a QA program that will crawl all the pages of a site (all files under a specified domain name), and it will return all external links on the site that doesn't open in a new window (does not have the target="_blank" attribute in the href). I can make a php or javascript to open external links in new windows or to report all problem links that don't open in new windows of a single page (the same page the script is in) but what I want is for the QA tool to go and search all pages of a website and report back to me what it finds. This "spidering" is what I have no idea how to do, and am not sure if it's even possible to do with a language like PHP. If it's possible how can I go about it?

    I have a table generated from some PHP code that lists a SMALL amount of important information for employees. I want to make it so each row, or at least one element in each row can be clicked on so the user will be redirected to ALL of the information (pulled from MySQL database) related to the employee who was clicked on. I am not sure how would be the best way to go about this, but I am open to suggestions. I would like to stick to PHP and/or JavaScript.     I'm new to writing code so kindly bear with me if this is a very noobish question. A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?
