• How to send mail from ASP.NET with IIS6 SMTP in a dedicated server?

  Hi. I'm trying to configure a dedicated server that runs ASP.NET to send mail through the local IIS SMTP server but mail is getting stuck in the Queue folder and doesn't get delivered. I'm using this code in an .aspx page to test: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" %> <% new System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient("localhost").Send("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "testing...", "Hello, world.com"); %> Then, I added the following to the Web.config file: <system.net> <mailSettings> <smtp> <network host="localhost"/> </smtp> </mailSettings> </system.net> In the IIS Manager I've changed the following in the properties of the "Default SMTP Virtual Server". Thanks @mattlant This is a dedicated server that's why I'm installing the SMTP manually. EDIT: I use exchange so its a little different, but its called a smart host in exchange, but in plain SMTP service config i think its called something else. Cant remember exactly the setting name. Thank you for pointing me at the Smart host field. Mail is getting delivered now. In the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, the Delivery tab, click Advanced and fill the "Smart host" field with the address that your provider gives you. • Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/' path=/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/ err=-43 uid=9000 euid=9000 If you're wondering where /Network/Servers/IP/home/sam comes from, it's from a couple of blogs that said the OpenLDAP attribute apple-user-homeDirectory should have that value and the NFSHomeDirectory on the mac should point to apple-user-homeDirectory I also set the attr apple-user-homeurl to <home_dir><url>smb://172.17.148.186/sam/</url><path></path></home_dir> which I found on this forum. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here.   Some users are trying to send email to certain domains using Exchange Server 2003, but the message is always is rejected and the following message is shown: 5.5.0 smtp;554 Transaction Failed Spam Message not queued The IP is not in a black list (checked using http://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check and is clean - not listed). The emails were checked using using smtpdiag ("a troubleshooting tool designed to work directly on a Windows server with IIS/SMTP service enabled or with Exchange Server installed") and the connection using port 25 is ok. • Nhibernate equivalent of LinqToEntitiesDomainService in RIA

  Hi, When using Entity Framework with RIA domain services, domain services are inherited from LinqToEntitiesDomainService, which, I suppose, allows you to make linq queries on a low level (client-side) which propagate into ORM; meaning that all queries are performed on the database and only relevant results are retrieved to the server and thus the client. Example: var query = context.GetCustomersQuery().Where(x => x.Age > 50); Right now we have a domain service which inherits from DomainService, and retrieves data through NHibernate session as in: virtual public IQueryable<Customer> GetCustomers() { return sessionManager.Session.Linq<Customer>(); } The problem with this approach is that it's impossible to make specific queries without retrieving entire tables to the server (or client) and filtering them there. Is there a way to make linq querying work with NHibernate over RIA like it works with EF? If not, we're willing to switch to EF because of this, because performance impact would be just too severe. How can I map the MyEnum type? Should I? What should Foo's mapping look like? I've tried mapping HasMany(x = x.Values).AsMap("MappedClass")... • openvpn: after changing to server mode, client does not create TUN device

  i had a previously working configuration with the config files used in a previous question However, i've changed this now to the following configuration using server mode, everything on the logs seem fine, however the client doesn't create any tun interface, so i don't have anything to connect to, presumably, i need to add or push some route commands, but i don't have any idea at this point what i need to do. • Asp.net membership logout automatically

  Hi, I recently deploy an application that uses asp.net membership (SqlMembershipProvider) and I dont know why but it automatically log out after 1 minute of inactivity. This doesn´t happen on my development environment. I even set the userIsOnlineTimeWindow to 60 which is supposed to be in minutes. Any ideas why this is happening? Im deploying to a virtual directory on a shared hosting environment. • Can GhostScript run in Medium Trust

  I am using GhostScript to generate some thumbnails of PDF pages in an ASP.NET application. I have it wrapped in this library called GhostScriptSharp that just uses DllImport to call methods in the GhostScript DLL. It looks like this wont work on a medium trust hosting environment, either because of the fact that it is calling unmanaged code, or that it looks like the library is creating files all over the place (outside my virtual directory). I ran Process Monitor and saw it trying to Read, QueryNameInformationFile, CreateFile and QueryStandardInformationFile in places like: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Halftone\Default or C:\gs\gs8.63\lib\Halftone\Default or C:\gs\font\Halftone\Default Any ideas about whether this is "fixable" to run in medium trust? If I can't use GhostScript, is there another free/open source library that WILL work in Medium trust?

  Hi All, I have been trying to set up local debugging for my ASP.NET app in Delphi and am getting the error above. I have used the aspnet_regiis.exe tool with the following: Aspnet_regiis.exe -s W3SVC/1/ROOT/DevTest but this hasn't helped. It added it to IIS as an application but I am still getting the error: The project cannot be debugged because virtual directory "DevTes" is not configured with ASP.NET version 2.0 or 3.0 Use aspnet_regiis.exe to configure the local IIS web server. I am not really sure where to go from here so need some help please: Machine specs: Windows 7 64bit, IIS7, Using RAD Studio 2007.

• SQL Server 2008 Restore from Backup fails with error 3241 'cannot process this media family'

  I am attempting to backup a database from a SQL Server instance on one machine and restore it to another, and I am encountering the frequently discovered 'SQL Server cannot process this media family' error. Each of my instances are SQL Server 2008, but with different patch levels Restore: 10.0.2531.0 Backup: 10.0.1600.22 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 ) The restore DB is express. Not sure about the backup version. The backup version is on a virtual private server. The restore is on my development box. When I restore to a different database on the source (backup) server, it restores fine. Lots of stuff on google about this issue, some on stackoverflow about this issue, but nothing which is this exact situation. Any thoughts? It should be straightforward to do a backup and restore from one machine to another (having done this thousands of times in with SQL 6.5,7,2000,2005).

  There is a strange thing on my server which has a mysql running on it. The QPS is more than 4000 but TPS is less than 20. The server load is more than 80 and cpu usr is more than 86% but iowait is less than 8%. The disk iops is more than 16000 and util of disk is more than 99%. When the QPS decreases, the load decreases, the cpu iowait increases. • open webim ( Mibew Messenger ) time out, reconnecting

  hi, i hope you guys know about webim a.k.a mibew messenger. I know only java, jsp and no idea about php except for some basics. Anyways, i ran this app in my apache2.2 local server. Everything works superb! But if i change my db to a virtual machine and give its address in the config.php (previously i had used localhost), in the visitors page, i get timeout, reconnecting. Login has no prob, so my guess is db connection is fine. I even changed the default page refresh time from 2 to 10. Nothing happens. Still same thing. You guys have any idea?

• Photoshop JSX script- CLOSE PHOTOSHOP!

  How do I close photoshop using its javascript scripting language. (I am automaticly scripting a great deal of things, and I notice that for one reason or another, some of the ram is not releasing with each new task. My hopes are that after X ammount of operations, I will fully close photoshop, to free up the ram.. which it is eating up all of my 8 gigs, and after which then opens photoshop help and causes a huge failure (actually, to be honest it fills up my hard drive with junk till I get a "hard drive is full" message... (I think it is dumping the ram into virtual ram on my hard drive?)... what a mess)THANKS!!

• Response.TransmitFile() with UNC share (ASP.NET)

  In the comments of this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/12s31dhy.aspx ..it says that TransmitFile() cannot be used with UNC shares. As far as I can tell, this is the case; I get this error in Event Log when I attempt it: TransmitFile failed. File Name: \\myshare1\e$\file.zip, Impersonation Enabled: 0, Token Valid: 1, HRESULT: 0x8007052e The suggested alternative is to use WriteFile(), however, this is problematic because it loads the file into memory. In my application, the files are 200MB, so this is not going to scale. Is there a method in ASP.NET for streaming files to users that's: scalable (doesn't read entire file into RAM or occupy ASP.NET threads) works with UNC shares Mapping a network drive as a virtual directory is not an option for us. I would like to avoid copying the file to the local web server as well. Thanks

• How to determine MS Access field size via OleDb

  The existing application is in C#. During startup the application calls a virtual method to make changes to the database (for example a new revision may need to calculate a new field or something). An open OleDb connection is passed into the method. I need to change a field width. The ALTER TABLE statement is working fine. But I would like to avoid executing the ALTER TABLE statement if the field is already the appropriate size. Is there a way to determine the size of an MS Access field using the same OleDb connection?

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here. • Asp.net override Membership settings at runtime (asp.net mvc)

  I had an application that hooked onto 1 single database. The app now needs to hook into multiple databases. What we want to do is, using the same application/domain/hostname/virtual dir give the user the option on the login screen to select the "App/Database" they want to connect into. Each database has the App tables/data/procs/etc as well as the aspnet membership/roles stuff. When the user enters the username/password and selects (select list) the application, I want to validate the user against the selected applications database. Presently the database connection string for membership services is saved in the web.config. Is there any way I can override this at login time? Also, I need the "remember me" function to work smoothly as well. How does this work when the user comes back to the app in 5 hours... This process should be able to identify the user and application and log in appropriately.

• HTTP not working EC2 instance with own domain name

  I have this problem I've already posted on the Amazon AWS forum. Unfortunately I haven't got a clear answer I and I was hoping you guys could help. Here's the link: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?messageID=198238#198207 Basically I don't know why after associating an Elastic IP address and mapping it to one of my domains, FTP an ping work fine, but HTTP does a 302 redirect to the Amazon AWS hostname I had before associating the Elastic IP address. Here's the question from the AWS forum: I have an EC2 instance with HTTP and FTP installed. They both worked. Then I associated an Elastic IP address to that instance. Then I mapped that IP address to a name which is a subdomain of a domain I own. I think it's an A name (I didn't do the mapping personally). Now FTP works and HTTP doesn't. The AWS host name before the Elastic IP association: ec2-184-73-27-8.compute-1.amazonaws.com The AWS IP address and host name after the association: 174.129.7.254 and ec2-174-129-7-254.compute-1.amazonaws.com The domain which is mapped to 174.129.7.254 using an A record is: demo.flashxml.net FTP works means that I can connect to both 174.129.7.254, ec2-174-129-7-254.compute-1.amazonaws.com and demo.flashxml.net. HTTP doesn't work means that a HTTP request to 174.129.7.254, ec2-174-129-7-254.compute-1.amazonaws.com or demo.flashxml.net returns a 302 redirect to ec2-184-73-27-8.compute-1.amazonaws.com Here is my VirtualHost file: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/ec2-user/public_html/wordpress ServerName demo.flashxml.net ErrorLog logs/ec2-user-error_log <Directory /home/ec2-user/public_html/wordpress> AllowOverride FileInfo Order Deny,Allow Allow from All </Directory> </VirtualHost> I finally figured out what was wrong. It's the fact that I installed Wordpress on the server using the hostname provided by Amazon. After associating the Elastic IP and updating the DNS records, the server was reachable - FTP working was the proof of that. The 302 redirect when accessing via HTTP was caused by Wordpress's hostname settings. So, what I've learned from all this was that I should setup my IP and DNS first and only after that install Wordpress or any other web app(s).

• Why is user asked to choose their workgroup?

  We running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 with Mac OS X 10.5.8 clients. Students use network logins to, well, log in. I've been asked to deny internet access to a specific user. I was told that a good way to do it is to create a user workgroup called "No Internet Access" and manage settings there. (Specifically, I told parental controls to allow access to no sites, and blacklisted all the installed web browsers). Now, when the user authenticates to log in, they are greeted with this dialog: Workgroups for <username> Grade 7 Students No Internet Access It is unlikely that the student would willing choose "No Internet Access" to be their base group. Looking in Workgroup Manager at the student's record, it shows their primary group ID is the grade 7 group, and "No Internet Access" is listed as another group they belong to. I looked at the managed preferences for all the computers pertaining to logins. They are set to their defaults. Specifically, the computer groups' preference for Logins - Access has the defaults: [unchecked] Ignore workgroup nesting [checked] Combine available workgroup settings Based on my reading of Tips and Tricks for Mac Administrators, this should be correct, the user should not be asked which group they belong to, and settings from all applicable groups should be applied. How can I achieve that result? Edit: I've decided to add some additional information from the Tips and Tricks for Mac Management White Paper (via Apple in Education, via the author's site). On page 21, it says: With Leopard MCX, workgroup preference settings are combined by default into a single set of values. This means that instead of having to choose between the Math, Science, or Language Arts workgroups when logging in, a user can just authenticate and be taken directly to the desktop. All the settings for each of those workgroups are composited together, providing you with all the Dock items and a composite of all the other settings. On page 40, an example is given in which settings are combined from different 'domains', one computer group, two (user) workgroups, and one individual user's settings. [When johnd logs into a leopard client,] the items staged in the Dock from left to right are: computer group, first workgroup alphabetically, second workgroup, user. Items within the workgroup are staged alphabetically. Nowhere is there an indication that groups are nested; indeed, I can see no sensible (non-flat) heirarchy for groups like Math, Science, and Language Arts. I strongly believe that there is a way to apply settings from two unrelated user workgroups such that a user of OS X 10.5.x or newer does not need to choose their workgroup. This is what I seek to achieve.

  Hi, I have a requirement to work on a VS2003 web project. I have VS2008,vs2010,vs2003 installed in my system Other System details are Windows Xp professional version 2 service pack 3. IIS 5.1 When i am trying to create a VS 2003 web project giving the localhost as path i am getting the following error. "visual studio noted that specified web server is not running under asp .net 1.1 version.You will be unable to run asp .net web applications or services". I have used aspnet_regiis commands as well as a tool(ASPNETVersionSwitcher.exe ) to swith versions and in iis also default web site asp.net version chosen as asp .net 1.14322. Still i am getting the error. same error i get ,if i point a virtual directory in the existing 1.1 .net web application and trying to open it. Please advise since i have to work on this project as soon as possible. Thanks SNA
