Should I use WPF or Windows Forms Application for my project in C#?

I am developing a Client-Server based application in which client application will access server database to store billing information. It will also have report generation facility. Windows Forms is good in document printing & I don't see such facility or controls in WPF. If I am wrong then please correct me. I want database security, which DB should I use, SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle. I would like to use free DB but security is my priority. Please suggest how I can implement a Client-Server architecture with multiple clients in C#? Thank you Geeks!!!

SharePoint SLK and T-SQL xp_cmdshell safety

I am looking into a TSQL command called "xp_cmdshell" to use to monitor a change to a the SLK (SharePoint Learning Kit) database and then execute a batch or PowerShell script that will trigger some events that I need. (It is bad practice to modify SharePoint's database directly, so I will be using its API) I have been reading on various blogs and MSDN that there are some security concerns with this approach. The sites suggest that you limit security so the command can be executed by only a specific user role. What other tips/suggestions would you recommend with using "xp_cmdshell"? Or should I go about this another way and create a script or console application that constantly checks if a change has been made? I am running Server 2008 with SQL 2008.

How to deploy and secure an ASP.NET web app to be available to internal and outside users?

My company has several web applications written in ASP.NET. We need to make these applications available to Intranet users as well as authenticated external users. Most of the features are the same for the two groups, though there are some extra features available to the Internal users. The two different sets of users would use a slightly different security setup... our internal people will be authenticated using LDAP against Exchange, whereas the external users will have accounts in SQL Server. What is the best approach for deploying our web apps? Should we deploy 2 copies to different servers, one configured for an Intranet and one for outside users? Or is there a better way to share the code between the 2 servers, yet have the flexibility to use different web.config settings for security??

Is there unresizable space in latex? Pictures in good looking grid.

I've created latex macro to typeset guitar chords diagrams(using picture environment). Now I want to make diagrams of different appear in good looking grid when typeset one next to each other as the picture shows: The picture. (on the picture: Labeled "First" bad layout of diagrams, labeled "Second" correct layout when equal number of diagrams in line) I'm using \hspace to make some skips between diagrams, otherwise they would be too near to each other. As you can see in second case when latex arrange pictures in so that there is same number of them in each line it works. However if there is less pictures in the last line they become "shifted" to the right. I don't want this. I guess is because latex makes the space between diagrams in first line a little longer for the line to exactly fit the page width. How do I tell latex not to resize spaces created by \hspace ? Or is there any other way ? I guess I cannot use tables because I don't know how many diagrams will fit in one line... Reduce file size for charts pasted from excel into word

I have been creating reports by copying some charts and data from an excel document into a word document. I am pasting into a content control, so i use ChartObject.CopyPicture in excel and ContentControl.Range.Paste in word. Next cc End With Creating these reports using Office 2007 yielded files that were around 6MB, but creating them (using the same worksheet and document) in Office 2010 yields a file that is around 10 times as large. After unzipping the docx, I found that the extra size comes from emf files that correspond to charts that are pasted in using VBA. Where they range from 360 to 900 KB before, they are 5-18 MB. And the graphics are not visibly better. I am able to CopyPicture with the format xlBitmap, and while that is somewhat smaller, it is larger than the emf generated by Office 2007 and noticeably poorer quality. Are there any other options for reducing the file size? Ideally, I would like to produce a file with the same resolution for the charts as I did using Office 2007. Is there any way that uses VBA only (without modifying the charts in the spreadsheet)?

Dynamically Changing an img tag's onemouseover attribute with Javascript nulls it instead

I want to create an img that has four different states: State 1 over State 1 out State 2 over State 2 out Each state is a different image, and the user can toggle between states 1 and 2 by clicking on the image. To do this I change the src when the image is clicked and the onmouseover and onmouseout attributes of the img element. However when the attributes have been changed they become nulled and do nothing. How can I dynamically change these properties? Do you leave Windows Automatic Updates enabled on your production IIS server?

If you were running a 24/7 website on Windows Server 2003 (IIS6). Would you leave the Windows automatic update feature enabled or would you turn it off? When enabled, you always get the latest security patches and bug fixes automatically as soon as they're available, which is the most secure choice. However, the machine will sometimes get automatically rebooted to apply the updates leading to a couple of minutes of downtime in the middle of the night. Also, I've seen rare occasions where the machine does not restart correctly resulting in further downtime. If auto updates are off, when do you apply the patches? I guess you have to use a load balancer with multiple web servers and rotate them out of the production site, apply patches manually, and put them back in. This can be logistically inconvenient when the load balancer is managed by a hosting company. You will also have machines in production that don't always have the latest security patches and you have to routinely spend time deciding which patches to apply and when.

Loading external Swf - sandbox violation

Hello Mates , I need a help ... an urgent one !!! i tried so hard to figured it out .. but i couldn't .. so I appreciate your help so much .. I'm developing an Air App using flash ... the app loads an external SWF file dynamically through an xml ... the SWF file has a movieclip that has a listener (ON click ) function mouseDownHandler(event:MouseEvent):void { navigateToURL(new URLRequest(clickURL)); } everything is working fine until i click on this movieclip ... it displays the below message SecurityError: Error #2121: Security sandbox violation: navigateToURL: http://www.mydomain.com/maskot/avatar.swf cannot access YAHOO.COM for example. How to deal with unknown entity references?

I'm parsing (a lot of) XML files that contain entity references which i dont know in advance (can't change that fact). For example: xml = "<tag>I'm content with &funny; &entity; &references;.</tag>" when i try to parse this using the following code: final DocumentBuilderFactory dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); final DocumentBuilder db = dbf.newDocumentBuilder(); final InputSource is = new InputSource(new StringReader(xml)); final Document d = db.parse(is); i get the following exception: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The entity "funny" was referenced, but not declared. but, what i do want to achieve is, that the parser replaces every entity that is not declared (unknown to the parser) with an empty String ''. JavaScript audio not playing outside of jQuery function

I know the question title doesn't make much sense, but I can't think of a better way to put it. Is there a major downside to using .htaccess files in your svn/git repository?

If our .htaccess files are purely for mod rewrites, is there a security / development downside to committing .htaccess files alongside other files in your repository? For various reasons (our SEO optimisers like to add pretty urls as new promotions occur, etc) we need a fair few rewrite rules inside these files. Would I be better off pushing the routing into php-land and dealing with it there? Or is reading from a .htaccess via apache fine? The .htaccess files are not exposed via the web server, so that's not a security risk.

splice() not working on correctly

I am setting a cookie for each navigation container that is clicked on. It sets an array that is joined and set the cookie value. if its clicked again then its removed from the array. It somehow buggy. It only splices after clicking on other elements. and then it behaves weird. Can't access media assets in an SWC

I'm having trouble accessing content in an SWC. The main project compiles without error, but the assets (sound, music) aren't displayed or played. My workflow: i. Using Flash CS5 1. Create MAsset.fla 2. Import sounds, art 3. Assign class names, check export in frame 1 4a. Write out the classes in the actions panel in frame 1 4b. OR. Add a document class and write out the classes there 5. Export SWC. Filesize is similar to what it is when I directly import assets in the main project library. 6. Create Project.fla and document class Project.as 7. Import SWC into main project through the Actionscript panel. 8. Add code, which calls the class names from the SWC (e.g. DCL_UI_MOUSE) 9. Compile. No compiler errors, but nothing doing. And the resulting SWF filesize doesn't reflect anything more than the compiled code from the main project. Regarding step 4, if I just write the class name in the root timeline or document class, the compiler error will go away and the asset appear to be compiled in the SWC. But I have also tried: var asset0000:DCL_UI_MOUSE; And: var asset0000:DCL_UI_MOUSE = new DCL_UI_MOUSE(); Regardless the assets don't make it into the final SWF. What am I doing wrong?

Content Types in browsers, can we use the Mime??

Ok, I am wondering which mime types are dangerous in browsers? That is to say setting the Content Type to that mime type?? Which mime types, if any would pose a security risk?? I am noticing that many forum software, when uploading files, use the application/octet-stream for any files other than images and place that into the Content Type of the header. I am wondering why don't they place the actual mime-type instead into the Content Type? Are there security risks involved with this? So far I have used text/css, text/plain, audio/mpeg, and many others and haven't noticed any difference between application/octet-stream and these others. Does anyone out there know the exact difference, and what makes application/octet-stream any better, or any worse...to use for the Content Type?? Thank You :)

I am trying to write to a pdf file on php server. I have sent variables to the server, create the pdf document, then have my phone download the document to view on device. The variables seem not to write on the php file. Change class of parent div if radio input checked

I've been searching and searching google for answers to my question but have been unsuccessful so far. I'm hoping one of you guys could give me some assistance. I have 10 divs with the class name "dividend" holding a table with the classname/id of "container" then two smaller tables inside that. Within the container table at the bottom is a hidden radio button with the name "page1". I wrote an onClcick for the container table so the user can select the whole table instead of the radio button, but not I'm trying to change the style of the selected container so the users know they have selected it. I have tried a few different methods and I'm able to change the style to the new class by just writing document.getElementById('container').className = 'selected'; But because all 10 divs share the same name it will only change the style of the first element it finds. So I tried writing this loop to check if there are any selected radios in the document then to change the else name the style as the default. I'm sure its something stupid but I'm pretty stumped atm.. Any help would be appreciated.
