During office hours, it’s a high-voltage testing unit most often used to stress test electric cables. In the off hours, however, the electrical engineering geeks over at The Geek Group like to shove anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of volts through unsuspecting objects to see what happens. In this installation they’re shooting high voltage through a variety of soft drink cans with an end result that sounds and looks like a cannon loaded with Mountain Dew. • Obtaining In game Warcraft III data to program standalone AI

  I am implementing common purpose behavioral algorithm and would like to test it under my lovely Warcraft III game and watch how it will fight against real players. The problem is how to obtain information about in game state (units, structures, environment, etc. ). Algorithm needs access to hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3 Editor language) usage doesn't solve the issue. Direct 3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and significant drawback is inability to watch online at how AI performs since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How in game data can be obtained to a different process in a fastest and easiest way? Thank you.

  I have Programming Ruby, The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide, Second Edition which covers Ruby 1.8. It has been several years since I have programmed in Ruby, but I'd like to refresh my memory and bring my knowledge current. With most programming languages, I've found that I can skip books that only concern a single version bump. Yet, Ruby is a young language and I understand there may have been significant changes in 1.9. Although I already have the second edition, is it worthwhile to buy the third edition for Ruby 1.9? Are the differences that vast, or will it be simple enough to catch up to 1.9 with the online docs?

• RAM Cache always full

  I have 6GB RAM, i5 2.4GHZ Processor running Ubuntu 11.10. When streaming online or opening several tabs in Chromium I soon have 4GB Memory in the cache. And this makes my Notebook slow. When streaming a video, after a few minutes it really slows down and stumbles/jerks. I partitioned my HD so that I have 8GB swap. What could the problem be? How can I solve this? P.s: initially I had 4gb and recently upgraded to 6GB, but I did not experience a significant change.   I've enjoyed a number of (fiction/non-fiction books) about hacker culture and running a software business in the 80's, 90's. For some reason things seemed so much more exciting back then. Examples are: Microserfs (Douglas Coupland) Accidental Empires (Robert X. Cringely Almost Pefect (W.E. Peterson, online!) Coders at Work (Peter Seibel) Today I'm an entrepeneur and programmer. Back in the 80's a I was a young geek hacking DOS TSR's and coding GWBasic / QBasic. In the 90's I was a C.S. university student, experiencing the rise of the Internet world wide. When reading these books running a software business seemed so much more fun than it is nowadays. Things used to be so much simpler, opportunities seemed to be everywhere and the startups seemed to work with much more real problems (inventing spreadsheets, writing word processors in assembly on 6 different platforms) than all our current web 2.0 social networking toys. Does anyone share these feelings? Does anyone have any good (personal) stories from back then or know of other good books to read?

This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. • Java 7 Adoption at 79%

  According to a recent blog post from the cloud hosting company Jelastic, Java 7 adoption on their platform is now at 79%. While this is a single data point and should not be read too broadly, it does match other indicators we have that Java 7 is picking up, such as uptake among Oracle middleware customers, download statistics and online activity. The spike in adoption in April coincided with the release of JDK 7 Update 4. This is in line with our expectations since that release added Mac OS X support as well as java.com moving to Java 7 as the default download for end-users; two events that marked the maturity of Java 7 to the community. Since the original release of Java 7, Oracle has shipped 7 update releases, added ports to Mac OSX and Linux/ARM and expanded JavaFX to all common desktop platforms.

• How do I reset my password?

  I inherited a machine with Ubuntu desktop installed. It has a password in place and I have no idea what the password may be. I cannot get to the command line to use the methods I have found online. No matter how many times I press "Shift" during the boot process it still goes all the way to the desktop login. I never see grub. I am not sure which version I have but I think may be 9 or 10. • How can I enable Unity 3d after installing Bumblebee? GLX Problems

  I'm new to Ubuntu, I'm running 12.04 64 Bit on a Dell XPS L207x with a Nvidia GT555M card. From what I could understand online I needed to install Bumblebee to get the most out of the Optimus system and better battery life. I can test the Bumblebee is working by running optirun glxgears for example. If I run just glxgears then I get the following error Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual. I'm also unable to run Unity 3d, which I would very much like. I'd greatly appreciate any and all help, please be gentle.

• R vs Python for data analysis

  I have been programming for about a year and I am really interested in data analysis and machine learning. I am taking part in a couple of online courses and am reading a couple of books. Everything I am doing uses either R or Python and I am looking for suggestions on whether or not I should concentrate on one language (and if so which) or carry on with both; do they complement each other? -- I should mention that I use C# in school but am familiar with Python through self-study.
