repairing or retrieving video off a cracked disk

My disk has a thin cracked right through the one side. right around the crack it looks like it has water damage but im pretty sure it was caused from the crack. will tape work for this? its a dvd of us in jamaica swimming with dolphins and i havent even watched it yet, it got ruined in my suitcase. If there is no way to repair it, is there somewhere that i can take it so they might be able to somehow get the video off of it and onto another disk? any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

How to adjust wallpaper to make it fit the screen, for netbook using window 7 starter?

I have a netbook, with window 7 starter. I was trying to change the wallpaper, and found this application: John's Background Switcher which said that I can make slide show of themes, I guess it's as you set wallpaper with window 7 ultimate. The default wallpaper was still fine until downloading that application. After trying it, error occurred, I couldnt change the background, so I closed it, but then the default wallpaper changed its size, the central image dropped out of screen, can see aaprt of it on `bottom right hand corner. I tried to adjust the image into center, but it didnt work when i right click on desktop - Graphic option - panel fit - "center image". Anybody can help me? how to adjust it back to normal as original?

Use backups if unavailable (not just down)

Using haproxy, I want: A pool of 'main' servers and 'backup' servers, though they don't necessarily have to be in separate pools. Each backend has a low 'maxconn' (in this case 1) Clients should not wait in a queue. If there are no immediately available servers in the 'main' pool they should be shunted to the 'backup' pool without delay. Right now I have one backend, 'main' servers have an absurdly high weighting and it 'works'. acl use_backend + connslots is along the right lines but without the patch in my own answer it isn't perfect. Bonus points for not requiring a modified haproxy binary.

How can I push a git repository to a folder over SSH?

I have a folder called my-project inside which I've done git init, git commit -a, etc. Now I want to push it to an empty folder at /mnt/foo/bar on a remote server. How can I do this? I did try, based on what I'd read: cd my-project git remote add origin ssh://user@host/mnt/foo/bar/my-project.git git push origin master which didn't seem right (I'd assume source would come before destination) and it failed: fatal: '/mnt/boxee/git/midwinter-physiotherapy.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'd like this to work such that I don't have to access the remote host and manually init a git repository every time ... do I have to do that? Am I going down the right route at all? Thanks.

Using (embedding?) wireshark in a C application for sniffing

I'm writing a C/C++ application which needs (among other things) to sniff packets and save the output in a file. This file will be read and processed by wireshark after a few days, using a LUA script to do some other stuff. My question is for the sniffing part which must be provided by my application. I can see two ways to do this: 1) Fork the wireshark process in background (of course using the command line version) 2) Using wireshark as library: no forking but include stuff like "wireshark.h" and link against libwireshark.so, thus using function calls to do the sniffing. So far I haven't found any documentation about #2 and it seems that #1 is the "right way" to embed sniffing capabilities in my code. Do you think I'm doing he right thing? Does wireshark allow embedding as a library?

Finding Font Issues in Acrobat

Ok let me try this again, so sorry for not be clear. We create our PDFs through Quark, then send to print. I usually create outlines on my EPS files before I load in Quark but forgot this time. We bypassed the font error that Quark gave us by accident and found out our PDF was bad too late and it cost a lot of money to fix. We are trying to find a way to check our PDF for font problems before we send it to print, in case this problem happens again. We just want to be extra sure that we have tried everything. What I see in Quark is what the font is supposed to look like. When I view my PDF, the text is mixed up. Its readable but doesn't look like its supposed to and the spacing is all off within the text. My boss told me about the preflight in Quark and the Internal Structure for the fonts. She was asking me if this would help and what the lingo all meant. (which is where my first question started) The image on the left is my EPS that is correct, the image on the right is from the PDF. The white text in the top right and the website at the bottom left is what is messed up. I am running Mac 10.5.8, Quark 7.5 and Acrobat 8.3.1. Thanks, Jayme

Windows 7 user limitation

I just installed Windows 7 pro x64 from Dreamspark (MSDNAA). But i can't figure out how to configure it. 1/ When I want to acces some folders a pop up show up and tells me "that I need administrator acces to do it" I click the "continue" button and I can go inside the folder. What was even the point in showing me this pop up? how can I remove it? 2/ In some folder when I do a right clic I can only create a new folder, not a new text file, not a rar, nothing. In the same folder I also cannot extract RAR (by doing right clic, extract here) Any Idea how to get back full control? Thanks.

Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot. Mapping Ctrl+Arrow for Home/End/PageUp/Down

I'm using Windows 7 on Dell New Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. It doesn't have Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Instead I have to use Fn + arrow keys. Can I re-map those to Ctrl + arrows or Alt + arrows or Shift + arrows? That way I could go one page up and down with only my right hands rather than with the left hand on the Fn key and right hand on arrow key. Also, volume up and down is assigned to FnF11 and FnF12. Can I re-map them to F11 and F12? Existing functions assigned to F11 and F12 will be replaced by FnF11 and FnF12. Is it possible?

CTRL-X not showing the bottom menu (compatible/nocompatible issue)

I'm having some strange behavior in vim. When I press C-X in insert-mode, I see ^X flashing quickly in the bottom right, but I don't get the menu at the bottom. The keybindings seems to work just find anyway: C-X C-L gives me line completion. I've managed to find out how to "fix" this, but it just doesn't seem right.. set compatible? echoes nocompatible. If I set it to compatible and then back to nocompatible, everything works. Trying the following at the end of my .vimrc doesn't help, and then I get some warnings from scripts. Any idea what's causing this and how I can fix this?

perfmon.exe itself taking 52.71% of cpu on windows 7 after chrome dies?

On my Windows 7 machine (build 7100, x64, Dell XPS M1710 laptop), I'm getting horrible performance after chrome crashes. I kill the chrome process from the Resource Monitor, but after that perfmon.exe itself is shown as taking about 50% of the cpu (52.31% right now). Quitting Performance Monitor, then starting it again, shows perfmon starting out with a reasonable CPU, but it quickly (ten seconds) shoots right back up. Suggestions? So far a reboot seems to be the only way to solve the problem. I'm assuming that the perfmon issue is just a symptom of the real problem. (Update, much later: this never got resolved. I'm not seeing the problem in the RTM Win7 + latest Chrome. Yes, it was a core 2 duo, so presumably Chrome was running full blast on one cpu.)

Help with Collapse and Expand Accordion at same time using JQuery (demo)

I'm stuck on an Expand/Collapse accordion using JQuery. After the initial headline is clicked and it expands, if you click to another headline it will collapse the former headline completely FIRST then it will expand the headline you clicked. This collapse first then expand second technique is very distracting and what should happen is as the headline is expanding it should collapse the initial headline. What am I missing? Multiple viewport problem

I'm setting up so I can switch between either one or four viewports but I got some trouble. In my bottom right viewport I got camera view, the same camera that I can switch to full view on. UIScrollView zoomToRect not zooming to given rect (created from UITouch CGPoint)

My application has a UIScrollView with one subview. The subview is an extended UIView which prints a PDF page to itself using layers in the drawLayer event. Zooming using the built in pinching works great. setZoomScale also works as expected. I have been struggling with the zoomToRect function. I found an example online which makes a CGRect zoomRect variable from a given CGPoint. In the touchesEnded function, if there was a double tap and they are all the way zoomed out, I want to zoom in to that PDFUIView I created as though they were pinching out with the center of the pinch where they double tapped. So assume that I pass the UITouch variable to my function which utilizes zoomToRect if they double tap. I started with the following function I found on apples site: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/WindowsViews/Conceptual/UIScrollView_pg/ZoomZoom/ZoomZoom.html The following is a modified version for my UIScrollView extended class: - (void)zoomToCenter:(float)scale withCenter:(CGPoint)center { CGRect zoomRect; zoomRect.size.height = self.frame.size.height / scale; zoomRect.size.width = self.frame.size.width / scale; zoomRect.origin.x = center.x - (zoomRect.size.width / 2.0); zoomRect.origin.y = center.y - (zoomRect.size.height / 2.0); //return zoomRect; [self zoomToRect:zoomRect animated:YES]; } When I do this, the UIScrollView seems to zoom using the bottom right edge of the zoomRect above and not the center. If I make UIView like this UIView *v = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:zoomRect]; [v setBackgroundColor:[UIView redColor]]; [self addSubview:v]; The red box shows up with the touch point dead in the center. Please note: I am writing this from my PC, I recall messing around with the divided by two part on my Mac, so just assume that this draws a rect with the touch point in the center. If the UIView drew off center but zoomed to the right spot it would be all good. However, what happens is when it preforms the zoomToRect it seems to use the bottom right off the zoomRect at the top left of the zoomed in results. Also, I noticed that depending on where I click on the UIScrollView, it anchors to diffrent spots. It almost seems like there is a cross down the middle and it's reflecting the points somehow as though anywhere left of the middle is a negative reflection and anywhere right of the middle is a positive reflection? This seems to complicated, shouldn't it just zoom to the rect that was drawn as the UIView was able to draw? I used a lot of research to figure out how to create a PDF that scales in high quality, so I am assuming that using the CALayer may be throwing off the coordinate system? But to the UIScrollView it should just treat it as a view with 768x985 dimensions. This is sort of advanced, please assume the code for creating the zoomRect is all good. There is something deeper with the CALayer in the UIView which is in the UIScrollView....

Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? Rails & combo box change event: Help make this obtrusive javascript unobtrusive

Ok so a friend of mine gave some help with a prototype/obtrusive solution to this but its not quite there. Also, I want to make this unobtrusive instead of using the observe_field function that rails gives me. I don't want to use prototype either because I'm more familiar with JQuery. Here's my problem: I have an Event that can have multiple ServiceTypes and a ServiceType can belong to many Events. A many-to-many relationship between these two exists as an OfferedService. When creating an event, I have a drop down with a list of TimeAllotments that are something like 10 minutes, 12 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes etc. When the user selects one of these choices, I want a div tag to be filled with a list of ServiceTypes that are associated with this TimeAllotment. So for example, the user selects "10 minutes" and then the div repopulates with services that last 10 minutes. I want them to change based on what is selected in the combobox event_service_time_allotment. Can someone help me get pointed in the right direction? I have looked at Ryan's rails casts for using JQuery but its not helpful because he deals with ajax calls for the create action. This would be for the new or edit action. I have a new.js.erb but it doesn't get loaded when calling the new action. I'm super lost as far as getting JQuery to work with my application. I think that if someone can just show me how to make an alert pop up when I change the combo box, and how to return a dataset using ajax the right now, I think I can figure out the rest. Thanks, I know this is super complicated so any helpful answers will get an upvote.

Sidebar with CSS3 transform

Goal I'm working on a collapsible sidebar using jQuery for animation. I would like to have vertical text on the sidebar that acts as a label and can swap on the animateOut/animateIn effect. Normally I would use an image of the text that I've simply swapped vertically, and switch it out on animation, but with CSS3 transforms I'd like to get it to work instead. Problem The problem I'm facing is that setting the height on my rotated container makes it expand horizontally (as it's rotated 90deg) so that doesn't work. I then tried to set the width (hoping it would expand vertically, acting as height), but that has an odd effect of causing the width of my parent container to expand as well. Fix? Anyone know why this happens and also what the fix/workaround could be without setting max-widths and overflow: hidden? I've got a fairly good understanding of both html elements behavior and css3, but this is stumping me. Installing AJAX Control Toolkit 4 in Visual Studio 2010

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to install AJAX Control toolkit step by step: You can download AJAX Toolkit .NET 4 “Apr 12 2010” released before 4 days, from http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475#DownloadId=116534, Once downloaded, extract AjaxControlToolkit.Binary.NET4 on your computer, then extract AjaxControlToolkitSampleSite. after that you need to open Visual Studio 2010, So we will add the toolkit to the toolbox. To do that press right-click in an empty space on your toolbox, then choose Add Tab. You can rename the new tab to be “Ajax Toolkit” for example : Then when it is added, right-click under the tab and select Choose Items: When the dialog box appears Choose .NET Framework Components tab then click Browse button and find AjaxControlToolkit folder that you installed the AJAX Control Toolkit. In that directory you will find a sub-directory called AjaxControlToolkitSampleSite, and under that folder you will find bin Folder, in this folder choose AjaxControlToolkit.DLL which 5.59 MB. The result of these steps, Visual Studio will load all the controls from the DLL file and by default it will be checked in this list: To submit your steps press OK button. Few days ago, I wrote about SQL SERVER – Out of the Box – Activity and Performance Reports from SSSMS (Link). A user asked me a question regarding if we can use similar reports to get the detail about Indexes. Yes, it is possible to do the same. There are similar type of reports are available at Database level, just like those available at the Server Instance level. You can right click on Database name and click Reports. Under Standard Reports, you will find following reports. Disk Usage Disk Usage by Top Tables Disk Usage by Table Disk Usage by Partition Backup and Restore Events All Transactions All Blocking Transactions Top Transactions by Age Top Transactions by Blocked Transactions Count Top Transactions by Locks Count Resource Locking Statistics by Objects Object Execute Statistics Database Consistency history Index Usage Statistics Index Physical Statistics Schema Change history User Statistics Select the Reports with name Index Physical Statistics. Once click, a report containing all the index names along with other information related to index will be visible, e.g. Index Type and number of partitions. One column that caught my interest was Operation Recommended. In some place, it suggested that index needs to be rebuilt. It is also possible to click and expand the column of partitions and see additional details about index as well. DBA and Developers who just want to have idea about how your index is and its physical statistics can use this tool. Click to Enlarge Note: Please note that I will rebuild my indexes just because this report is recommending it. There are many other parameters you need to consider before rebuilding indexes. However, this tool gives you the accurate stats of your index and it can be right away exported to Excel or PDF writing by clicking on the report. Integrating Silverlight BING Maps with SharePoint 2010

YOU HAVEN’T!? DAMMIT! You should! Seriously, the bing silverlight maps are way way way cooler than their google counterpart. They are simply mindblowing. Now, what if I told you, you could integrate those, and the power of the bing geocoding api, AND, the bing search engine, AND routing capabilities, all on a silverlight map, and throw in the Yahoo geocoding api over a REST interface, all running inside SharePoint? No seriously! I am not joking! In this video, I demonstrate exactly the above, all integrated and running happily inside of SharePoint 2010. Note that you can also make this work in SharePoint 2007. I used the Telerik Silverlight Controls to make all this happen. And as always, only about 2% of the video is slides, all of the rest is all hands-on code.
