  • Serial converter - cat /dev/ttyUSB0 hangs on open

    - by Alex
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and attached a Garmin data cable. The device gets recognized [17718.502138] USB Serial support registered for pl2303 [17718.502181] pl2303 2-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected [17718.513416] usb 2-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [17718.513443] usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303 [17718.513446] pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver ... but when I do a strace cat /dev/ttyUSB0 it hangs on the open part and does not continue any more open("/dev/ttyUSB0", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILEC If I do the same on Ubuntu 12.04 it stops on fread(" ... ") which is okay, as there is currently no data comming in at this port. I am not sure if it is just a different configuration of the system or an driver related problem. How can I track this down further? Unfortunately I can not update the old Ubuntu 11.04 system for different reasons at the moment.

  • How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installaing iTunes

    - by Martin Hollingsworth
I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

  • How do I unmount a charging device in Linux?

    - by PeanutsMonkey
I have a mobile device attached via USB to a Linux box and wish to unmount it. I ran the command fdisk -l however it does not list a mount point. I then ran the command lsusb which yielded the screenshot below. I then proceeded to search the /dev/disk/by-id directory and was found the following file The file is a symbolic link to what appears to be /dev/sdc Questions Why does it not appear when I run the command fdisk -l? How do I unmount it properly without simply yanking the USB cord from the USB port?

  • PS/2 mouse works with Windows 7 32-bit but not recognised by 64-bit, What to do?

    - by Bogan
Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

  • I believe I need a wireless access point, but can I do it with a wifi router?

    - by Flotsam N. Jetsam
My needs are simple, I think: I have a laptop upstairs with a usb wifi that I use to connect to my neighbor's wifi which I share (with their knowledge). I have a laser printer downstairs that my wife doesn't wants to stay down there (big, bulky and ugly), but that we both need to print stuff off. It has wired networking and I have wired hub and router down there. The usb wifi on the laptop has absolutley the best reception I've ever seen or heard of. I cannot get onto the neighbor's net with the thing downstairs though--sortof in the ground. What do I need downstairs to give printer access to my laptop wirelessly? One thing I can't do in this solution is have a computer on downstairs, so I would think that would eliminate a usb solution.

  • How is it possible for SSD's drives to have such a good latency?

    - by tigrou
First time i read some information about SSD's, i was surprised to learn they internally use NAND flash chips. This kind of memory is generally slow (low bandwidth) and have high latency while SSD's are just the opposite. But here is how it works : SSD drives increase their bandwidth by using several NAND flash chips in parallel. In other words, they do some data striping (aka RAID0) across several chips (done by the controller). What i don't understand is how SSD's drives have such a low latency, whereas they are using NAND chips? (or at least lot better than what a typical single NAND chip would do) EDIT: I think under-estimate NAND chip capabilities. USB drives, while powered by NAND's are mostly limited by USB protocol (which have a pretty high latency) and the USB controller. That explain their poor performance in some cases.

  • Renaming an Invalid Filename in NTFS

    - by Sadeq Dousti
Recently, I loaned my flash disk to one of my friends, who had Mac OS. He copied a file on it, whose name included a backslash (\). The flash disk is NTFS formatted. Windows does not allow such filenames, and neither opens the file, nor deletes it, nor lets me delete the file. There are naive approaches to this problem, like: Formatting the flash disk; Giving it back to my friend and asking to rename it; Loading into some live Linux and renaming it. However, I'm looking for something more clever, like a program that can do the trick under Windows. PS: There's a tool called NTFSWalker which can browse the MFT records of the NTFS, but is unable to make any changes to them.

  • Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

    - by Stalker
I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.

  • KDE Device Notifier and mounted volumes ownership and permissions

    - by nunomaltez
Hi, When I plug an USB pen to my PC and mount the device using KDE's Device Notifier, the mounted device is owned by my user, who has write permissions. However, when I connect a USB harddisk and mount a partition in the same way, the mounted device is owned by root, and since the owner is the only one with write permissions I can't write to the disk. How do I configure the device notifier's actions to mount the HD with my user as owner, just like it mounts the USB pen? I'm using Fedora 9.

  • Why do I have inconsistent network issues with my laptop's wireless?

    - by Jason
I'm having trouble with my laptop Internet connection. It's patchy at best and resets or freezes a lot. The signal strength is also random. I thought it might be a driver issue but now I don't know. Three other computers using the same wireless network run well. I've switched out wireless routers so I don't think it's the router. I thought it might be the laptop's internal wireless card but I just bought an external USB network card and I'm still having problems. Specs Lenovo T-60p Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Patches/drivers are up to date I only use one of the below at a time, disabling the other: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG v. 13.3.0.137 (Internal wireless) Medialink Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter (USB wireless) Any ideas on what might be the problem?

  • UVC device Logitech WebCam 9000 pro

    - by Pavel
There is such a good webcam in universe that acts as a "USB Video Class" (UVC - video USB standart interface) - the logitech webcam 9000. UVC offer unified interface allowing to control it or grab a picture from it by any UVC-driver. You need one universal driver and you support all the UVC devices (webcams, video-cameras, video-grabbing-cards etc). For example, in linux - if you have UVC driver - you don't need to think about specific webcam driver for UVC webcam. UVC has unified way that webcam transmit its awailable resolutions and other capabilities, so i see 1600x1200 resolution without any problem. I wonder if windows 7 has UVC. I mean "universal UVC" (-; It says "USB Video Class", but doesn't give resolutions larger than 640x480 and webcam's controls, like 'sharpness', 'focus' and other as linux's driver does...

  • Will readyboost speed up a secondary partion or harddrive?

    - by Sebastian
I'm building a new computer and plan on using a few spare USB sticks with readyboost to cache disk writes. I'll be running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 I have a single 2 TB disk, and plan to make a partition for windows (100 GB) and use the rest for data. I know Readyboost will work nicely for the C drive, but am unable to find any information on whether it will accelerate a second drive or partition. Just to clarify, I'm NOT trying to use the harddrive instead of the usb sticks. I'm trying to speed up the second partition using the USB sticks So, will readyboost work for a secondary partion or harddrive?

  • TV Card Problem

    - by MladenB
I have DVB-T card (CE9500B1) and it doesn't work. I've tried everything I knew (but I don't know much). It doesn't show any problem, but shows "No Signal". I used another TV card USB, found channels, put mine card again, and again nothing. I don't think it's broken, when I put USB in my laptop, it recognizes it. Also, these little lights on USB are never turned on. OS is Win 7. Help, please.

  • how to disable to automatic wireless interface up in ubuntu? [closed]

    - by Surjya Narayana Padhi
On my laptop I have a built in wireless card and I got one external connected via usb. By ifconfig command I saw both the cards connects to internet and gets IP. eth1 - the interface my laptop has in-built wlan1 - I have connected externally via usb. Now I applied "sudo ifconfig eth1 down" so that i can use only wlan1. But this eth1 goes down for sometime and then come up again automatically. So I am not able to test my externally usb connected wifi adapter. Can anyone suggest me way to disable eth1 interface?

  • Reset disk does not work for different model of computer

    - by dato
I've created a reset USB disk on my HP computer, with Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, and it works fine. However, it does not work for Acer computers (notebooks too), so what is the problem here? I've have created it for the same user named user, and the password is exactly the same as well. Is it possible to show the language bar with a keyboard shortcut at the logon screen in Windows 7? I know I can do it through Control Panel, but I can't log into the system. When I click Reset Passwword, it shows me my USB flash drive and says that the password hint is on this USB drive. Then I click Next and type the new passwword, then confirm this new password, but an error dialog is shown. It says that an error occured when trying to change the password for this user-

  • Dual Boot issues with Windows 7 and Ubuntu

    - by Michael
I'm finding myself in a rather unique situation. I've read through just about every resource I can find about this and while things have helped me understand some background, I haven't yet been able to find a solution. So I'm asking here. I originally had just a Windows 7 64-bit OS installation on my desktop. Learning that I couldn't do anything with Apache, PHP and MySql from within a 64-bit system, I did some research and found out that I could use Ubuntu. I've installed the latest version: 11.04. I created a CD to install Ubuntu from and the install went just fine. I installed it side-by-side with Windows 7. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine through the dual-boot option. When I reboot to load Windows though, the Grub2 list shows Windows 7 (loader) and when I select this option the Windows System Recovery loads instead of the actual OS. I haven't made it past there because I didn't know what to do. I just shut the computer down and rebooted into Ubuntu. I've been working for the last hour and a half to try to figure out how to boot into the Windows 7 OS and I haven't got a clue. While I'm somewhat proficient with Windows 7, I'm totally new to Ubuntu, so if you do know what needs to happen, please keep it simple enough that I'll be able to understand. Thanks for all your help in advance. • "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock" error while mounting FAT Drives

    - by cshubhamrao
I am unable to mount any fat32 or fat16 formatted usb disks under Ubuntu 13.10. The thing here to note is that it is happening only with fat formatted Disks. ntfs, ext formatted external usb disks work well (I tried formatting the same with ext4 and it worked) While mounting via nautilus: Error while mounting from terminal: root@shubham-pc:~# mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/shubham/n mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so As suggested by the error: Output from dmesg | tail root@shubham-pc:~# dmesg | tail [ 3545.482598] scsi8 : usb-storage 1-1:1.0 [ 3546.481530] scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access SanDisk Cruzer 1.26 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 3546.482373] sd 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 [ 3546.483758] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] 15633408 512-byte logical blocks: (8.00 GB/7.45 GiB) [ 3546.485254] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off [ 3546.485262] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 43 00 00 00 [ 3546.488314] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Write cache: disabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 3546.499820] sdc: sdc1 [ 3546.503388] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk [ 3547.273396] FAT-fs (sdc1): IO charset iso8859-1 not found Output from fsck.vfat: root@shubham-pc:~# fsck.vfat /dev/sdc1 dosfsck 3.0.16, 01 Mar 2013, FAT32, LFN /dev/sdc1: 1 files, 1/1949978 clusters All normal Tried re-creating the whole partition table and then formatting as fat32 but to no avail so the possibility of corrupted drive is ruled out. Tried the same with around 4 Disks or so and all have the same things

  • Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

    - by Jeanno
Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas? • How to set acpi=off for installation?

    - by Johan Helgø
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit from a USB created in Windows using the recommended software from pendrivelinux. The USB is tested on two laptops and works fine. The install does not work on my desktop PC, it either hangs with lots of text on the screen, or it just gives me a screen with garbled colors. Right now it hangs on "[3.925311] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...", but it hangs on different spots every time I try. I know that acpi=off will fix this. On older versions, there used to be a pink screen with the icon of a keyboard, at that screen I could press ESC, and I would then get a long list of languages, I could choose English, and then I would get options for setting acpi=off, then install without any problems. This new install menu does not have those options. The (now black and white) "Installer boot menu"'s advanced options is blank. There simply are no advanced options. If I go to help, then press F6, I get to a help screen describing the different boot parameters. I see examples of writing "Install acpi=off" However, writing "install acpi=off" it gives an error saying "could not find kernel image: install". How can I install Ubuntu 12.04 with acpi=off? (Oh, btw, nothing happens if I press F6 in the "Installer boot menu")
